Yankees Still Looking To Add Starting Pitching

By Darragh McDonald | March 19, 2024 at 7:46pm CDT

The Yankees were frequently connected to Blake Snell while he was a free agent, but the lefty reportedly agreed to a two-year, $62MM deal with the Giants last night. Though Snell is off the board, the Yanks are still in the market for starting pitching, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post.

It’s understandable that the Yanks are still on the hunt for arms. They were often connected to Snell even before the recent news that ace Gerrit Cole is going to miss significant time due nerve inflammation and edema in his elbow.

Though the desire to add Snell seemed to be real, it appeared that the competitive balance tax was too much of an obstacle. The Yankees are set to be third-time payors of the tax and are already over the fourth and final threshold, meaning they face a 110% tax on any further spending. Snell didn’t find the long-term deal he was looking for, reportedly turning down a six-year, $150MM offer from the Yanks, and pivoted to a short-term pact with a high average annual value. Had the Yankees matched the $31MM AAV Snell got from the Giants, they would have had to pay $34.1MM in taxes as well.

That concern seemingly had them leaning towards a trade for Dylan Cease, since he’s still in his arbitration years and making just $8MM this year. But the Yanks missed out there as well, with Cease eventually getting shipped from the White Sox to the Padres. Heyman adds that they haven’t made much traction with other trade targets, such as Jesus Lúzardo of the Marlins.

But the need for reinforcements is apparent when looking at the rotation without Cole. Nestor Cortes went on the injured list due to a rotator cuff strain on two occasions last year and finished the season with a 4.97 ERA in 63 1/3 innings. Carlos Rodón dealt with a forearm strain and hamstring strain and posted a 6.85 ERA in his 64 1/3 innings. Marcus Stroman had a great first half but issues with his hip and rib cartilage pushed his ERA up to 3.95 by the end of the year.

Those three have each had much better results in the past but they are sort of wild cards now after their frustrating campaigns. Backing them up will be Clarke Schmidt, who had a 4.64 ERA last year. There would still be one spot open, with pitchers like Luke Weaver, Luis Gil, Clayton Beeter and Will Warren potential options. Weaver has finished three of the last four seasons with an ERA of 6.40 or higher. Gil underwent Tommy John surgery in May of 2022 and missed most of the last two years. Neither Beeter nor Warren have made their major league debuts yet.

The Yankees will understandably be open to upgrading that group, especially for a season in which they are clearly committed to winning. They sent five players to the Padres to get one season of Juan Soto, and two of Trent Grisham, and will pay Soto $31MM plus taxes in the process.

Opening Day is next Thursday but the club still has options, with various pitchers still unsigned thanks to this slow offseason. The club has been connected to pitchers like Michael Lorenzen and Jordan Montgomery, both of whom remain unsigned. Free agency also features guys like Mike Clevinger, Johnny Cueto and Noah Syndergaard. Earlier this month, reporting suggested Montgomery was still holding out for a seven-year deal but the other guys won’t require significant expenditures to sign.

With the start of the season so near, there would naturally be concern about a pitcher getting stretched out after missing so much of Spring Training. It seems Lorenzen has been getting himself ready on his own, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, who relays footage from Lorenzen’s agent of the righty throwing. Rosenthal reports that the righty recently threw 70 innings, getting up and down four times. He would likely still require some official game action but it doesn’t seem as though he would require a traditional six-week ramping up period.

Lorenzen has reportedly been seeking a two-year deal while also receiving interest from clubs like the White Sox and Mets.

Signing Thor would be the most desperate Asgaardian move since releasing the Fire Demon Surtur to destroy their entire home world.

I hadn’t read much about Clevinger before, but this is a good article:

They are stuck. There’s nobody they can realistically trade to get salary relief who they don’t need or who isn’t more valuable than anybody they’d get in return, they can’t add salary, so… they’re stuck. If Rodon bounces back and stays healthy, that’s the equivalent of adding a pitcher. But of course there’s lost Cole even if that happens, so it’s break even at best.

Man they can never put it all together, even with that insane payroll…

The Marlins have every reason to ask the Yankees for the moon. The Yankees are in a position of desperation and the Marlins are going nowhere either way. The Yankees need to stop acting like every season is a must win situation. It gives everyone else the upper hand in any trade scenario.

The Dodgers are uber-wealthy and ultra competitive as well. But last year they drew a line in the sand and didn’t cross it(then won 100 games anyway). But the Yankees need to admit they face the same restraints as everyone else, or go full Cohen and just say money is no object.

I get it, but if they’re really all in, that would not matter. But apparently they are not all in, as usual, it’s just empty promises. Once again the only thing they’re all in on, is in increasing revenue, and lining Steinbrenner’s pockets as usual.

Wait a minute, they Yanks are over the cap as we speak, Yanks have enough pitching to win. The hitting was their downfall along with injuries. Cashman can’t control the injuries, and nobody in their right mind would pay an extra 110% for anything!

They only have enough pitching if they are extremely lucky. Cortez has only once thrown near a full season. Stroman got hurt last year. Rodon is made of glass. And their ace is sidelined. I would think that getting Soto would be a significant way to address the lineup. At same time who knows about Judge? He is always getting hurt and coming off an injury he claims will never fully heal (how he knows this is anyones guess but it’s a pessimistic take). A torn ligament in a toe is extremely hard to properly heal because it is hard to isolate to exercise/stretch.

“Won’t spend money”..You didn’t think too long before you wrote that one did you? The Yankees have actually spent too much money and that’s why they’re somewhat capped out. All the Yankees did in the last few years is bring in highly paid superstar Juan Soto, give Gerrit Cole the largest pitching contract in history and resign Aaron Judge to a HUGE contract, but in your eyes that’s not “spending money”, right? If misinformed people like you are going to accuse the Yankees of “not spending”, regardless of how much they spend, why should they bother “spending” in the future?

You had 1 free agent signing this offseason. KC and CIN spent more than NYY this offseason. Soto was arbitration, not a free agent signing. You can’t bring Judge or Cole into this offseason. Your upset you have a high payroll, that’s because you refuse to fix your Stanton issue and you refuse to extend Judge when he was young, like ATL does. The ironic part is all reports are NYY are in on UFA Lorenzen, now they look his way. The team is backwards

How does one fix the Stanton issue? How would that effect payroll? Nobody is paying anything for him. Idk about Judge wanting or not wanting an extension. Hard to get a good deal when a guy hits like 50 hr as a rookie. Also he was injury prone (is) so it would’ve been debatable whether it was smart or not. “Lucky” for him he had the monster contract year where he was healthy. Nobody should pay premium for that (as if a healthy season cancels out his injury prone nature). It’s gonna be another regretful contract probably. At least not as bad as many others.

When I heard “fix Stanton” I knew thegreatgoodbye was coming from out in left field. I guess he thinks you can just wave a wand and cure what ails you. The Yankees would have to include at least $60M just to get a return call on Stanton and would get ZERO back. Some bad acquisitions you are stuck with, because no ones taking the Yankee’s broken down, overpaid, ill fitting parts like Giancarlo Stanton.

BOS got rid of David Price, Adrian Gonzalez and even Carl Crawford. It could be done. If Stanton’s contract was holding the team back from spending more money, they could have traded him more then once and added in a prospect that they never play and DFA anyways (G Whitlock, Deivi Garcia, Florial, etc)

Exactly. Why do the Yankees need to outspend the Rays 3:1 just to compete with them? The Yankees’ ownership should take a field trip from their executive suits on Dale Mabry and drive over to whatever St. Petersburg back ally the Rays keep their people in. Just walk in and offer everyone in the building a 100% raise to come work for them. The total cost would pale in comparison to what the Yankees spend on over the hill players just to keep pace.

“Trade Soto for pitching”…It wasn’t pitching that took the Yankees down last year, it was a hitting lineup of all or nothing(mostly nothing) hitters.

Mike Cleavinger is a number 2. Hes much better than Rodon. If you don’t want Bauer, why not sign him? If I was a GM of any baseball team I’d win 100 games easily. Iv been right about 99% of my predictions in the past 5 years. Was right about Brendan Drury, Tommy Pham, Luis Arraez, Drew Smith being the worst reliever in the game, etc. How these guys get GM jobs, I have no idea

What did I say about that Soto trade when it happened that got me in hot water with some fellow fans? Oh yes that if Cashman didn’t make additional upgrades it was just window dressing to give off the appearance of getting something done. Casuals will be all like oh lets go see Soto and tix will get a bump, but man overall they gave up too much (basically an entire rotation) for one year and zero guarantee of signing.

Too many questions marks and not enough answers on this team. Another pitcher and a cheap util right now is needed, but I just don’t know how this turns out overall.

Here’s hoping if they’re terrible, Cashman recognizes and recoups some prospects for Soto at the deadline. Heck trade a few pieces away!

NYY traded for Verdugo who is above average (focus?) and can take advantage of the short RF distance but getting Grisham in the Soto trade seemed redundant.
I realize Trent is supposed to be good defensively – NYY outfielders seem to get injured alot and could get some rest in games where they have a sizeable lead.
Trent’s salary is cheap & his other stats seem productive but his strikeouts the last 2 years and batting under .200. Get a good eye test maybe

In retrospect NYY wishes they had held back one of the lesser SPs they traded for Soto.

I would be surprised if they didn’t inquire about Bieber from CLE.

If they go the FA route instead MC or ML it doesn’t matter if you call them a #2 -#5 or tax they have to pay for one year. They need to not burn out their bullpen. Once they make the sacrifice for Soto the Due is Cast.

They need to McGyver duct tape together the pitching. With their offense they should be OK in most games (75%) To get whatever they can out of Cole they shouldn’t feel pressure to rush him back. Hold him out till after AS Break

Agree on the MacGyvering the starting staff. That’s why I keep saying just grab a major league starter regardless of the quality just someone that can eat some innings.

I like Verdugo and Trent even. The OF is solid right now. But the IF was sus even before DJ’s injury. But like SP there’s guys that can be had on the cheap. They can get two pitchers and a util right now for 10mil total which wouldn’t get a big amount of tax and be much better off.

I know we have some kids that can play, but sometimes you need some professionals out there that know how to act as bandaids.

Lorenzen is going to wear himself out throwing 70 innings in a practice.

Not sure why Clevinger is still sitting out there. Solid #4 type – cant think his market value is more than say 1/10.

No kidding. Sign Bauer at league minimum. Ignore the griping as there are still plenty of Yankee fans that feel “less offended’ by such indiscretion.

I think they could still trade with Oakland for serviceable Blackburn. His $$ is pretty low and the cost of a prospect should not stop them.

I wonder if they could swing one of those rare cross town deals and acquire Quintana plus the cash to cover his contract for a prospect or two?

Mets have shown a willingness to pay down the money and that fits the Yankees need to avoid paying more luxury tax.

Plus the Mets could then go out and sign a Lorenzon or Clevinger to fill the hole in their rotation.

Jorbit Vivas plus a lottery ticket?

Talk about a non-story, merely Clickbait. That’s like saying, Bees are looking for honey, or humans need food to live.

Of course, they’re looking for pitching, every major league team is always looking for pitching. they’ll take pitching if the prices right. Of course the price never seems to be quite right for them. They want something for nothing. There aren’t too many teams that will give them something for nothing. They’ll find some reclamation project, and pat themselves on the back, when he performs better than expected for a week or two, before he fades into oblivion, as usual.

Yes. It seems he basically threw almost half a full season of innings recently, but fortunately he got up and down four times while throwing those 70 unsupervised innings.

Yeah, I stared at that sentence multiple times. Regardless, of however many innings he’s thrown on the side, he’s going to need weeks before he’s ready to pitch. I suspect all of these pitchers starting the season late will have off years.

The Angels and San Fran could both use more offense and we have Stanton if anyone was willing to take his last 4 years plus Yanks eat $35 million of the 98million remaining (marlins still on hook for $35million)?
In turn throw in a prospect (Pereira or Peraza) and ask for a bullpen/ 5th starter in return that can shuttle back and forth to AAA with options. Now they can go and sign Lorenzen on a one year deal and will avoid the huge tax penalty. Otherwise forget Yankees adding any pitching help. Warren is my choice for 5th starter and Gil builds up his arm in long relief and ready to jump in rotation if need be.
