As the 2024 regular season continues, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world throughout the day today:
1. Article XX(B) opt-out opportunities today:
The most recent collective bargaining agreement between MLB and the MLBPA included a trio of automatic opt-out dates for certain big league veterans who landed minor league deals over the winter. Today is the second of those three uniform opt-out dates, though the opportunity currently applies to far fewer players than it did the first time around, when more than 30 veterans were eligible to opt out.
This time, just seven players are eligible for the uniform opt-out opportunity: Angels outfielder Jake Marisnick, Blue Jays first baseman Joey Votto, Cubs outfielder David Peralta, Rangers right-hander Shane Greene, Red Sox right-hander Michael Fulmer, and Red Sox catcher Roberto Perez. MLBTR’s Anthony Franco took a look at each of those players’ performance this season and the case for them to opt out. Any player in the aforementioned group who decides to remain with his current organization will get their third and final automatic opt-out opportunity a month from today on June 1.
2. Brewers, Rays face potential suspensions:
Things got heated during Milwaukee’s 8-2 victory over Tampa Bay last night when Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta and manager Pat Murphy were both ejected from the game after Peralta hit Rays center fielder Jose Siri with a pitch. Later in the game, the benches cleared when a skirmish broke out between Siri and Brewers right-hander Abner Uribe which included Uribe landing a slap on Siri before the two were separated. Both Uribe and Siri were ejected from the game following the incident, and it appears likely that suspensions for both players could be in the cards later today. Randy Arozarena would likely slide over to center field in Siri’s absence, while a combination of Joel Payamps, Trevor Megill, and Hoby Milner would likely take on late-inning duties with the Brewers while Uribe serves a suspension.
3. Sanchez to undergo MRI:
Before the eventful later innings of the game had gotten starter, veteran catcher Gary Sanchez was removed from the first inning of the Brewers’ game last night with a bout of right hamstring tightness. Murphy told reporters (including Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel) after the game that Sanchez will undergo an MRI on his hamstring to determine the severity of the issue. Rosiak also notes that Eric Haase was pulled from last night’s game at the Triple-A level and would likely take the place of Sanchez, who is in a backup role behind All-Star backstop William Contreras with Milwaukee, should he require a trip to the injured list. Sanchez has been a solid source of power off the bench for the Brewers this season but has hit for a low average, slashing .208/.283/.458 with three doubles and three homers in just 53 trips to the plate.
AToweringFlyBall
Nothing about the Phillies being the first team to 20 wins, nothing about the SP ERA being the lowest in baseball, nothing about their glut of starters … it’s like they don’t exist to the MLBTR writers.
Old York
@AToweringFlyBall
Given that one of the teams that was in the WS last year barely got 80 wins, celebrating wins in the regular season means nothing. Last year after 31 games, the D-Backs were 10-21. Then got 84 wins in total that year. The only thing that matters is if you can squeak into the playoffs at the end of the season.
vikingbluejay67
So I guess we shouldn’t bother watching until September?
Old York
@vikingbluejay67
You can watch but those wins really won’t mean much until September.
getrealgone2
Yeah, I’m sure the people in charge of this site had meeting at the start of the season discussing how they were gonna purposely ignore the Phillies. Get a life.
jamaicajan
Fwiw, they have the 7th best starting era. Also, this is a rumor/transaction site. Why would you expect to see them devote a whole article commending the Phillies pitching? Go to Bleacher Report or ESPN for that.
Wellthisshouldbeinteresting
I’m pretty sure the headline of this article would hint that they weren’t going to cover any topic that’s even close to stroking the Phillies ego.
DarkSide830
They literally just wrote a Bohm piece the other day.
Bucsfan4ever
No one in the world cares about the Phillies other than Phillies fans
BobbyAyala94
Who cares about first to 20 wins? They’re not even in first place. Also I think the Red Sox starters ERA is lower.
AToweringFlyBall
Sounds like a Mets fan.
Jason Hanselman
It has to be incredibly embarrassing how little control Pat Murphy has over his players. Such an undisciplined, emotional bunch you have to believe the first time manager is in well over his head, and unlikely to be able to handle the rigors of the job for very long.
youngTank15
This isn’t the first time Pat Murphy has managed a team.
kripes-brewers
3 games in a row that the umps have inserted themselves into the outcome of their games. Murph did his job each time, and arguably was in the right. Bad non-interference call on Judge, batter interference call after the ball had gotten past the catcher the following night, and ejection of starting pitcher without a warning on the 3rd.
Jason Hanselman
I missed the Judge call, but saw them make the right call when Bauers hit the batter in the skull with his bat. You don’t need to give a warning to toss a guy. If not arguing that he would have been tossed for his young pitcher Li’l Abner not being able to control his emotions and getting punched in the mouth for his efforts it would have been any number of other things because he is a hothead. Probably an incredible assistant manager, but this holds him back. Mr. Kevin Cash saw Ben Rortvedt awarded a single on a ball off the wall last week only to see a batter get second a few nights later when they corrected a call in the first game. In both situations the runner did not reach second under own power due to heeding umpire instruction. In both instances it went against TB. Instead of throwing a tantrum he handled it with class.
Old York
#2: MLB players are so soft nowadays. So you get hit and then another AB a pitcher says some words to you. Whatever happened to the phrase Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me? Go back to the bush league if you can’t handle some barking.
ChuckyNJ
Saw the clips of the Siri HBP and the later fight. Brewers TV whined “you can’t throw a pitcher out of a game for hitting a batter”. Yes, you can — and the umpires don’t have to issue a warning. Murphy got run from the game per MLB policy.
FartCopter
Yeah like in the past when players just brushed it off. Like Ty Cobb, who leapt into the stands to beat a disabled fan that he thought heckled him.
Old York
@FartCopter
Do you have a link to the highlights of that?
When people don’t like someone, they make up stories. Microcosm of social media.
FartCopter
It’s in Ken Burns’ “Baseball”. You can also Google it and there are a multitude of references to it.
Not sure how social media factors into a story from like 100 years ago.
Old York
@FartCopter
Oh, yes, Ken Burns, born in 1953, old enough to have seen the incident happen when Cobb was playing. Amazing!
Chicken In Philly?
It’s called research, Old York.
Old York
@Holden Bases
So, if I write about something I’ve researched, that ultimately means it’s absolutely true. Interesting logic…
xtraflamy
@Old York Since the first televised baseball game was the Reds Dodgers game in Brooklyn on 8/26/1939, and Ty Cobb retired (for the 2nd time) in 1928, there aren’t going to be any links to “highlights”. You can read about it though so no one’s making anything up in any social media microcosm. There are many articles about the incident that include reports from sportswriters (the only way to get “highlights” at the time). The incident occurred on May 12, 1912 during a Tigers Highlanders game in NY. The disabled fan, named Claude Lucker, was heckling Cobb and he charged the stands and beat him up. Cobb was suspended. yadda yadda there’s more story after that. Cobb was a great baseball player but reportedly most people didn’t like him, including his own teammates.
FartCopter
What? So anyone born after an event occurred cannot have knowledge of it because they aren’t first hand observers?
You’re goofy.
Old York
@xtraflamy
Based on the wiki article, it doesn’t sound like it suddenly happened in the same game but that it had been going on for years. So, even if the counter-point being made to me saying players are soft, doesn’t really make sense because Cobb had this going on for years not just 1 ball game within a few innings. So, clearly, players are softer nowadays and have their egos bruised much easier.
Old York
@FartCopter
Context is really the issue here.
A few innings in a game and the players are fighting…
vs…
Years of a heckler saying personal insults against a guy who then blows up.
So, clearly, not the same and players are extra soft nowadays.
Jason Hanselman
The real problem here is that Al Stump made up a bunch of lies about someone for personal profit, and hardly anybody takes the time to realize they were lied to:

Lloyd Emerson
This isn’t the first time I’ve seen Ye Olde York dig himself into a deeper hole by doubling down on his stupidity.
Old York
@Lloyd Emerson
Debunking claims by users who don’t understand reality is called doubling down on stupidity? What world do you live in? Clown World?
FartCopter
What have debunked? You haven’t provided anything to support your posts. Then you have some pathetic straw man of “if I wrote a something that I researched then does that make it true?”
That’s some big brain toddler logic.
drasco036
Ty Cobb attacking a fan is well documented, as was his suspension for attacking a fan and the player strike that followed it.
drasco036
I’m taking a break from berating Old York, who is the worst poster on this site, for the day. I’ll pick it back up tomorrow when he says something equally stupid….
Old York
@FartCopter
Look above.
A few innings in a game and the players are fighting…
vs…
Years of a heckler saying personal insults against a guy who then blows up.
So, clearly, not the same and players are extra soft nowadays.
Old York
@drasco036
But it wasn’t just that game, it was accumulative over time. These players are so soft and easily get offended in less than 1 game. That’s pathetic. Time to grow up.
Old York
@drasco036
It’s ironic that you think I’m the worst poster yet love to respond to me with equal forms of trolling. Hilarious!
FartCopter
So you are saying it’s perfectly okay for a player to assault a disabled fan, and that makes you strong. But, it’s soft for a player to fight another player after getting disrespected.
Thats some real lead poisoned boomer reasoning. Young people bad, old people good.
Old York
@FartCopter
Typical modern thinker. Don’t get the details, just blame someone like the witch hunt. I thought society was supposed to be progressing forward not backwards.
FartCopter
“When people don’t like someone, they make up stories. Microcosm of social media.”
Well, well, well. Looks like your own argument has travelled 100 years into the future to actually make sense! Raise your glass of paint chips for a toast!! To dementia!!
Old York
@FartCopter
I’m replying to your boomer claim. How else do I respond?
Chicken In Philly?
You? Absolutely not. Ken Burns. Yes.
Chicken In Philly?
Based on the wiki.
Stop there.
Chicken In Philly?
Dude, you haven’t debunked anything.
Chicken In Philly?
No, not from you.
Troy Percival's iPad
Siri leads the league in Strikeouts. Are we absolutely sure he didn’t need a smack? Seems unfair to Uribe
WestVillageTiger
But wait. There’s more!
In a brilliant marketing move the Detroit Tigers and Bally Sports tell Tigers fans paying $300/month to watch Tigers games that they can no longer watch Tigers games.
clickondetroit.com/sports/2024/05/01/comcast-xfini…
WestVillageTiger
Kudos to Chris Ilich and Scott Harris for putting a vastly improved product on the field that nobody can watch even if they pay (or have blown their budgets attempting to do so).
Blackpink in the area
Who pays 300 a month to watch Tigers games???
WestVillageTiger
That’s the full Comcast package with all sports and movie options here.
I certainly don’t pay that but tons of Tigers and Red Wings fans don’t give it a second thought. Especially the one who are still working.
WestVillageTiger
I’m sure they’ll still insist on taking full payment from subscribers to their “Sports package” regardless.
Blackpink in the area
I pay about 200 a month for Comcast in Denver. That includes my internet, TV and peacock. If you only want the sports there are much cheaper ways to watch games.
ChuckyNJ
Maybe you better take a course in fact-checking. Xfinity has dropped ALL the Bally Sports RSNs nationwide, not just in Detroit. Happened at midnight EDT.
Blackpink in the area
I get the mlb package free with t mobile.
ChuckyNJ
Except if you’re in Michigan or northwest Ohio you get blacked out of Tigers games, period.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It’s more Comcast refusing to pay Bally Sports their ask. Sucks for in-market Tigers fans who can’t even watch on MLB.tv due to local blackouts.
WestVillageTiger
I get MLB TV via Amazon Prime and they show replays of the blacked out local games two hours after their conclusion.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Still a crappy situation. I almost never watch non-live games.
SweetBabyRayKingsThickThighs
I like when they punch each other in the face we need more of that
bigalcathey
I came here to read the comments expecting to see some love for Eric Haase.
Tough crowd….
WestVillageTiger
Good for Eric. He won the job outright in Spring Training!
