White Sox Promote Bryan Ramos, Place Danny Mendick On 10-Day IL

By Mark Polishuk | May 4, 2024 at 10:35am CDT

10:35AM: The White Sox have officially announced the transaction, with Mendick placed on the 10-day IL (retroactive to May 2) due to lower back tightness.

10:17AM: Ramos will replace Mendick, as Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times (via X) reports that Mendick is being placed on the 10-day injured list with a back injury.

8:35AM: The White Sox are calling up third baseman Bryan Ramos from Double-A Birmingham, according to James Fox of the FutureSox website (X link).  The corresponding 26-man roster move isn’t yet known, but Ramos has been on Chicago’s 40-man roster since November 2022.

Ramos will be bypassing the Triple-A level entirely in order to make his Major League debut whenever he makes his first appearance on the field.  It is a pretty aggressive promotion for the White Sox to make with the 22-year-old, especially since Ramos wasn’t exactly forcing the issue with a slow start against Double-A pitching — an .182/.265/.307 slash line over 98 plate appearances with Birmingham this season.  Ramos at least had better numbers in a longer sample size at Double-A in 2023, hitting .272/.369/.457 with 14 homers over 339 PA.

Injuries could be forcing Chicago’s hand, as Danny Mendick was scratched from yesterday’s lineup due to tightness in his lower back.  While manager Pedro Grifol told MLB.com and other media that he didn’t think Mendick’s injury was too serious, that stance might have changed after some further testing, plus the White Sox are already short-handed at third base as it is.  With Yoan Moncada out until late July due to an adductor strain, the hot corner has been a revolving door, with Mendick, Braden Shewmake, and Lenyn Sosa all getting starts in Moncada’s absence.  Sosa is at Triple-A and infielder Zach Remillard is still in the organization after recently being outrighted off the 40-man roster, but it appears as though the White Sox will instead take a look at an up-and-coming prospect.

An international signing in July 2018, the Cuban-born Ramos posted solid numbers at A-ball in 2021, which led to his first taste of Double-A action in 2022.  He spent the bulk of the 2023 campaign back at Birmingham, though he missed close to to two months of action with a groin injury.  It could be that this missed time led the White Sox to start Ramos back at Double-A this season rather than move him to Triple-A Charlotte, and it might be that Ramos gets optioned to Charlotte rather than Birmingham if and when he is sent back down to the minors.  Depending on Mendick’s status, Ramos might just be getting a cup of coffee in the Show as roster depth for a day or two.

Then again, since the 6-26 White Sox are already looking to the future, they might take this opportunity to give Ramos some real playing time.  Moncada is in the last guaranteed year of his contract, and since it doesn’t seem like the Sox will exercise their $25MM club option on Moncada for 2025, Ramos could be viewed as an everyday candidate by Opening Day 2025….or even this season, depending on how he fares in his first looks against MLB pitching.

Baseball America and MLB Pipeline both rank Ramos as the fourth-best prospect in Chicago’s farm system, citing his power potential and hard-contact tendencies, even if breaking pitches remain a challenge.  Defensively, Ramos has a 55-grade throwing arm and has made plenty of gains with his glovework at third base.  Both scouting outlets made note of Ramos’ attitude and drive to improve, with BA’s scouting report noting that Ramos’ “makeup and work ethic…[is] described as being off the charts, and he has worked hard on firming his body since initially coming to the U.S.”

Doesn’t matter his last 8 games have been good. I’m a big Ramos fan but this is so beyond stupid and it’s just a desperation move and it’s going to come at the cost of Ramos

How is this ‘beyond stupid’ going to be a ‘cost’ to Ramos exactly?
Ohh nooo, if he is not careful he may hit a ton and stay on the MLB roster.. oh noooo…
Yeah yeah I get he could not and go back to the minors, but again how is this a ‘cost’ to him?
I think that if many more players had this sort of chance you may find out more guys can play in the majors when normally they never get a chance.

The problem is, a guy who can’t hit at the AA level is considered the #4 prospect in the farm system. This isn’t the kind of player you want to build around. God for I’d reinsdorf should spend some money on actual prospects.

Who said anything about building around him (that title goes to Montgomery anyway), he either works, or doesn’t. Much better to find out sooner than later. Prospects are just that, Prospects. They spent a ton on Colas.. That has not really panned out yet either.

AA has been great so far. Their farm system(all 4 of them) have had a winning record which is extremely rare for them.

Except, individually, they don’t seem to be developing players good enough to fill in when Robert, Moncada and Eloy inevitably get hurt. The Sox don’t have the people on any level that can develop players because good coaches cost money. At this point I think they’re using volunteers from local high schools and beer leagues.

The White Sox org as a whole lacks accountability, and will until ‘The Chairman’ relinquishes control (one way or another).
Guillen was the last one to show and demand any sort of accountability and was not afraid to push the players buttons, and that was long before he actually left the team. . Renteria, Im guessing, came close, but this org does not want accountability and autonomy to demand results, they demand loyalty and being a lemming above all else.

when do we admit the failure of Moncada, maybe they are ready to try and replace him finally. Not the best first step but it’s more than Sosa and Mendick

I think that’s been fully admitted but he’s still under contract for the rest of the year. If he wasn’t hurt he’d still be the best 3b on the roster clearing a very low bar.

Banix: Moncada IS a very good third baseman and his hitting was coming along. He’ll be gone after this season because reinsdorf wouldn’t even give Ohtani $25m a year

Does not even try to compare Ohtani to Moncada (not even mention him in the same sentence).. Moncada does not deserve anything of the sort. Exercise Moncada only if the org wants to to watch him get hurt and spend 3/4 or the season on the IL. The Sox got taken hard by that guy.

I like Moncada and when healthy he’s often a good player. He’s rarely healthy though so I think it’s fair to call his contract extension a failure and a team shouldn’t rely on him to be an every day option at this point.

If he’s up just as an injury replacement it’s proof of how far Sosa has fallen down the Sox depth chart.

I think after the last few years its clear that Sosa is a 4A hitter. Great in the minors, but never can do it in the majors. Then again, the ‘coaching’ dept in the Majors (if not for all the org)for the Sox is lacking. You better have talent going to the White Sox because they sure as hell are not going to find it for you.

Banix: I agree. He can’t field at any position. He can’t hit. He added to the best comedy show in baseball when he seemed to get an IF hit, but but stopped short of 1b. Time to stop relying on retreads and invest in real major league players. Like that will ever happen.

The new guy, however, has the much-rehearsed and idiotic “Let’s Go!” as his HR call. When the Sox won on a walk off HR by Benintendi, the new guy said ” Take that, all you haters!” You can tell by a lot of his remarks that he should be calling games at Birmingham if they’ll have him.

Its not ‘idiotic’, if anything its a golden opportunity for guys who may not have otherwise had a chance to come up to the bigs and show they belong.
As for their ‘confidence’, they are either big leaguers or not. This idea of ‘sheltering’ them in the minors until the ‘perfect opportunity’ does not help either (if anything it may hinder them from showing they belong in the majors if the team is so gunshy to bring up guys). Colas should be up too but the Sox have no OF or DH spots right now. This team is going nowhere, perfect time to see what some of these guys can do, as we have seen what little guys like Sosa can do already.

He’ll probably get one start and be used as a pinch runner and defensive replacement for a week and a half. He’s up because he’s one of only 3 position players on the minor league portion of the 40 man.

It’s not that serious. If a week on the bench of an MLB team saps him of all his confidence and wrecks him then he probably wasn’t much of a prospect to begin with.

The White Sox would still have a bad team, but with a more respectable record if a) they had a manager and b) they had a bullpen. Both are correctable, but it doesn’t appear that either will be addressed. I will never understand the deep love they have for Leone. He is awful.

You’re really underselling how bad this lineup is. The fact that Chris Getz acquired a bunch of terrible hitters who continue to perform terribly isn’t the fault of the manager or the bullpen. The whole thing is broken.

What did Getz do to help the offense? He turned over a lot of the roster and has objectively made it worse. They’ve been shut out nine times – what does that have to do with the bullpen?

Bring him up, perfect time to see what the guys in the minors can do. but he better be talented. Its clear this coaching staff is laughable at best.. I mean how does the 3rd base coach still have a job?! This (and Im pretty sure last) season he has sent more guys to their doom around third only to be done like dinner with the ball waiting for them at the plate .What about cleaning up the mental errors and fielding(while we are at it) Grifol?
And Mendick goes down with an lower back injury? Where is the conditioning staff again? I mean do they have one at this point? Did they all get stuck in that little car they drive around in?
Again NO Accountability in this org and that’s the bigger issue. Meet ‘The Chairman’ once, suck up to him, laugh at his jokes, and have a job for life no matter how bad you screw up or cannot do the job.
