Giants Claim Derek Hill From Rangers

By Anthony Franco | July 23, 2024 at 7:22pm CDT

The Giants are claiming outfielder Derek Hill off waivers from the Rangers, as first reflected on the MLB.com transaction log. Texas designated the speedster for assignment over the weekend. San Francisco already had an opening on their 40-man roster, so they won’t need to make a corresponding move until Hill reports to the team.

Texas signed Hill, a former first-round pick of the Tigers, to a minor league deal over the winter. They gave him a pair of stints on the big league roster. He connected on three home runs in 16 games, though he also struck out 14 times while drawing only two walks. The 28-year-old has had an excellent season in Triple-A, hitting .350/.415/.631 with eight home runs through 176 plate appearances.

Hill can play all three outfield positions. He hasn’t hit much at the MLB level, running a .232/.280/.334 line over parts of five seasons. He’s a career .300/.360/.502 hitter over 224 Triple-A contests, making him an intriguing depth piece. Hill has exhausted his minor league options, so the Giants will need to keep him on the big league roster or designate him for assignment themselves moving forward.

Clueless, Did you post the same thing when the Rays claimed Joel Kuhnel? Or when The Royals signed Dinelson Lamet and Austin Cox? When the Mets took Alex Young from the Giants? Or the Yankees signed Thomas Pannone?

Of course not. You don’t want to offer any real insight. Somehow when the Giants do exactly what every other team does it incites you to insult. You just want to troll. It’s pathetic.

RoastGobot, If you want to make a point, maybe try doing it with something more original than something I’ve seen posted innumerable times.

That said, to answer your question; nobody.

To address what I assume is the point you’re trying to make; I have a dislike for trolls whose posts amount to nothing more than “your team sucks”. This troll, a Yankees’ fan, that never posts anything on NYY articles, has a long history of posting on articles about the Giants that amount to nothing more than moronic, insipid attacks. He seems to have some sort of senseless, deep-seated hatred for the Giants.

This should be a site for reasonable people to post valid insights in discussions/debates about baseball. That’s not what this trolls is about. He’s like the proverbial fly in the ointment.

He’s clearly an overweight man who cannot get laid. Guys like this have to get off on being keyboard warriors trolling others so they can desperately receive the attention they crave. No one would notice them in public, it makes them angry. He’s a beta

Released? If he’s released he won’t be headed to Sacramento. I’m guessing you mean put on waivers. That’s the only way he gets to Sacramento.

Fringe players like Hill always need to keep their bags packed, regardless of the organization. Some guys have been stuck in DFA limbo getting claimed by multiple clubs for weeks.

Derek Hill is the classic AAAA player: too good for AAA ball but can’t put it together in the majors. Not a bad guy to take a chance on a potential breakout but with him being out of options, it’s hard to keep someone like this on a 26-man roster that is competing for a playoff spot. He’ll need to start out on fire and stays hot if he hopes to stick with the Giants. Good idea for him to keep his bags packed.

Farhan’s specialty, especially if they have ever played for him.

Giants aren’t realistically competing for a playoff spot anymore. We can get our hopes up again around December if ownership actually decides to do what needs to be done regarding the baseball operations department.

Hill is (somehow) hitting above league average. Unfortunately, his OPS isn’t going to like Oracle Park.

Every team in baseball makes waiver claims. So you think that Zaidi shouldn’t be doing what every other GM/PBO in MLB is doing?

I feel bad for the Giants here, at least other teams for some odd reason can have some back-and-forth banter with each other, but the Giants always have articles with “27champyankees” and “Non Roster Invitee” just having some kind of weird vendetta against the team to meaninglessly troll and provoke the fans on every minute decision that gets made. It’s so ridiculous I have to finally say something about it, honestly.

The lesser known bad news for the Giants are the a StatCast numbers for Hicks/Harrison/Webb. Significantly below average except for Webb’s disastrous on every level except walks, metrics….

I think this is not a bad acquisition. Derek Hill needs an extended opportunity and he needs to stay healthy. He’s one of the best defensive CF in MLB. In addition, I think Ryan McKenna was not a bad acquisition but needs extended playing time too.

I’m surprised the Dodgers never claimed him yet considering his dad was a scout for them when the Tigers drafted him.
