Giants Designate Nick Ahmed For Assignment

By Anthony Franco and Darragh McDonald | July 9, 2024 at 5:26pm CDT

The Giants announced a series of roster moves today, with left-hander Blake Snell as well as infielders Wilmer Flores and Thairo Estrada all reinstated from the injured list. One spot on the active roster was already opened when they traded outfielder Austin Slater to the Reds. They opened two more by optioning left-hander Kolton Ingram and designating shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment. The latter move drops the 40-man roster count to 39.

Ahmed signed with San Francisco on a minor league deal early in Spring Training. The longtime Diamondback essentially took over for Brandon Crawford as a glove-first veteran shortstop. Ahmed hit well during exhibition play and made the roster, locking in a reported $1.5MM base salary in the process. He picked up the Opening Day nod at shortstop — the first time a player other than Crawford got that honor since Miguel Tejada back in 2011 — and went on to start 50 games overall.

As is typically the case with Ahmed, virtually all of his contributions came on defense. Statcast credited him as four runs better than average across 426 innings. Defensive Runs Saved was less bullish, grading him one run below par. He hit in the bottom third of the batting order and ran a .232/.278/.303 slash line with one homer over 172 plate appearances.

Ahmed is a two-time Gold Glove winner who has been one of the sport’s preeminent defensive shortstops throughout his career. While he’s still a good defender, his numbers have taken a step back from elite levels as he has gotten into his mid 30s. Ahmed has never been much of an offensive threat and has particularly struggled over the past few seasons. Since the start of the 2021 campaign, he owns a .222/.273/.330 line in a little more than 900 trips.

Estrada’s return from the IL will likely push Brett Wisely from second base to shortstop, at least against right-handed pitching. Righty hitting Tyler Fitzgerald is in the lineup tonight against Toronto southpaw Yusei Kikuchi. While the 25-year-old Wisely is stretched defensively at shortstop, he provides a higher offensive ceiling than Ahmed brought. Wisely owns a decent .278/.313/.421 slash through 135 plate appearances in his second MLB campaign.

The Giants have five days to trade Ahmed or place him on waivers. He has well over five years of MLB service time and would retain his entire salary if he clears waivers and becomes a free agent. A release is the likeliest outcome. Once Ahmed clears waivers, he could sign with another team for the prorated portion of the $740K minimum.

Meanwhile, Snell returns for his first MLB action in nearly six weeks. San Francisco’s late signing could hardly have gone worse to this point. Snell has battled groin issues throughout the year and been limited to six starts. Opponents have teed off on the defending NL Cy Young winner for a 9.51 earned run average through 23 2/3 innings. Snell will try to get his season on track when he takes on the Blue Jays this evening.

That’s been true more recently. He was much better offensively through most of the first part of the season; not a threat but not a sure out either. His glove is still solid, despite what the post insinuates.

Luciano is currently in a dismal slump.
Striking out a ton and has been moved off of shortstop to second base.
So probably Estrada to Shortstop and Wisely to Second. All good !

Wisely / Fitzgerald combo at either Short or Second will most likely provide better offense then Ahmed did. Either way works for me.

BaseballGuy55, While I agree, Wisely at short and Estrada at 2B, makes more sense defensively than the reverse, I disagree about Bichette. While he’s has hit in previous seasons, his 72 wRC+ this season isn’t much better than Ahmed’s 69. And he’s not good with the glove at all. For his career he has a -18 OAA, and a -7 DRS.

Schmitt isn’t the answer either. Don’t let those PCL numbers fool you. He can’t even crack the list of Fangraphs’ top 42 Giants’ prospects.

Pete’sView, Where would Bichette play? He’s a defensively liability at SS. The Giants already have 3 guys that can play 2B. Bichette has never played a single inning at any other position.

He won’t come cheap. Do you really want the Giants to give up something of quality in hope of him re-finding his swing?

Completely agree with Dave. I also think this is the right time to part ways for both the Giants and Ahmed. Gives him the ability to sign with a contender, and now the Giants can really evaluate Wisely on an everyday basis (I’m still not sold on him, for whatever reason)

maybe that reason, is because we’ve all seen Wisely play terrible in the past and we’re not certain that his play is sustainable..

For the Giants fan who cried when they signed Ahmed and let Crawford walk, this transaction is the exact reason why.

Could you imagine if the Giants had a struggling Crawford on their roster and had to pick between adding a younger, more productive player and unceremoniously cutting B-Craw? It would’ve been a nightmare.

That’s pretty easy to explain, though. They were never going to be division leaders, and injuries have affected some of their key players (while their record might not be substantially better, I’d have loved to see what they could’ve done with a healthy Jung Hoo, as my avatar might suggest).

What is harder to explain is how the Yankees, for all of their massive spending and acquiring big name players, are 3.0 games back from a team with a third of their payroll.

You’re not wrong, but I didn’t really make a substantive enough claim about the team for injuries to be a poor “excuse”. That’s doubly so when @chumpy’s argument is that the team can’t play above .500 with $400mm in commitments this offseason when $100mm+ of those commitments is out for the season (JH Lee).

That was a completely different situation though. That was his home of ten years, and was cut pretty unexpectedly with less than a month to go. I remember his interview right after that, he was pretty emotional and upset. He felt (and seems to still) feel slighted by them.

Totally different than with the Giants, where he was never more than just a fill-in piece
