Latest On Marlins’ Bullpen Trade Candidates

By Anthony Franco | July 8, 2024 at 8:07pm CDT

The Marlins should trade a handful of veteran players over the next three weeks. While center fielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. might be the team’s most interesting candidate, the Fish are also a lock to move at least one reliever.

Closer Tanner Scott, who is on his way to his first All-Star Game next week, has looked likely to move essentially since the Marlins started their season on a nine-game losing streak. The Dodgers, Yankees, Phillies and Orioles were all linked to the hard-throwing lefty last month. Scott is a viable target for any team with postseason aspirations, though, and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald writes that roughly a dozen clubs have expressed interest.

Scott got off to a rather shaky start to the season. After walking seven of the 34 hitters he faced during Spring Training, he handed out 13 free passes in 12 2/3 innings through the end of April. While Scott worked around the walks to turn in a 2.84 ERA in the season’s first month, he’d likely have been in for regression if he didn’t dial in his command.

To his credit, Scott has taken a step forward in that regard. He has walked 10 of 93 opponents (10.8%) going back to May 1. It’s still not pristine control, but it’s significantly better than the 21.3% walk percentage he’d posted through the season’s first few weeks. Strike-throwing is Scott’s only real question mark. He has some of the best raw stuff in the sport, pairing a 97 MPH heater with a wipeout slider. Opponents have only managed 18 hits over 38 innings. They’re hitting .142/.273/.205 across 154 plate appearances.

While this is the first year in which Scott is headed to the Midsummer Classic, he was arguably even better in 2023. Scott pitched to a 2.31 ERA with a 33.9% strikeout rate and a career-best 7.8% walk percentage over 78 innings last year. Over two and a half seasons in South Florida, he owns a 2.82 earned run average while striking out 31.5% of opposing hitters. He has picked up 45 saves and finished 89 games while working as Miami’s closer for the majority of that stretch.

There’s little reason for the Marlins to hang onto Scott past the deadline. He’s headed to free agency for the first time in his career a few months from now. He’ll be entering his age-30 campaign and should have a case for a three- or four-year deal. A rebuilding Miami team isn’t likely to bring him back. Scott is playing this season on a $5.7MM arbitration salary, a little over $2.5MM of which is still owed.

As the lone rental in the bullpen, Scott should be the top priority for president of baseball operations Peter Bendix and his staff. Yet the front office is probably open to discussing their more controllable relievers as well. Mish writes that other teams have shown particular interest in left-hander Andrew Nardi, whom the Marlins control for another four seasons. Mish also lists right-handers Calvin Faucher and Declan Cronin as potential trade candidates, though it’s not clear how strong interest is in those cases.

Nardi is probably the most appealing of that group. His pedestrian 4.72 ERA belies excellent strikeout and walk numbers. The 25-year-old southpaw has fanned 29% of batters faced against a 7.6% walk rate. He’s inducing swinging strikes at a lofty 14.4% clip. Nardi has been plagued by a .337 average on balls in play this season but posted a 2.67 ERA across 57 1/3 frames last year. There should be significant interest, although Mish suggests the Marlins may wind up holding onto Nardi to plug him into the ninth inning next year.

Faucher and Cronin were low-cost offseason acquisitions. The former came over from the Rays alongside Vidal Bruján in one of Bendix’s first trades. Faucher has a 3.55 ERA while striking out nearly a quarter of opponents through 33 innings. Cronin, claimed off waivers from the Astros in February, has a 3.35 ERA with solid peripherals over 43 frames. The 26-year-old righty has average strikeout and walk numbers while running a massive 55.7% ground-ball percentage.

Would Baty and a minor league SS get us Tanner Scott ? The Mets need bullpen help.

“Worthless” is a huuuuge overstatement. He’s not the highly touted prospect he once was but he also barely has a full season’s worth of MLB games under his belt (169). He’s also only played 58 games in AAA. And he’s mashing pitching there right now. If you would like an example of a guy who struggled mightily in the majors despite gaudy minor league numbers who has flourished in a second chance, look no further than the guy who took Baty’s job: Mark Vientos.

Vientos was even worse than Baty in the majors but continued to put up solid minor league numbers. Now he has a 156 OPS+ in 44 games in the majors. Stupid to say that Baty is “worthless” now.

Baty has over 600 pa in parts of 3 seasons in the majors with a 215 ba and sub 300 obp…he had his shots, how long were the mets supposed to wait for him to figure it out?..he has 4 A player written all over him till he shows otherwise

@sad tormented: “Baty was called up before vientos”

Who cares what order they were called up in? Vientos had a sub-.600 OPS (~65 OPS+) in his first 81 games and 270 PAs in the majors. He also had 170 games in AAA. Baty only currently has 58. Give Baty some time to develop. He was rushed to the big leagues and should have spent a season in AAA.

@Poolhall: “Baty has over 600 pa in parts of 3 seasons”

Like I said, about one season’s worth of games. You don’t write off a former top 10 prospect, who is crushing AAA pitching, after one season’s worth of PAs. Give him a few more months in AAA to develop properly. Mike Schmidt had an OPS+ in the 85-90 range after his first 500 PAs and then became a Hall of Famer. Maybe wait a little bit before writing these players off as AAAA.

You know that I’m not doing that. Come on. I’m chastising you for giving up on someone after one season’s worth of PAs. And I’m using an extreme example like Schmidt to prove the point. I don’t know how you could read what I wrote and come away thinking I’m comparing Baty to Schmidt.

@sad tormented: “If the Mets still had faith in him why is he in AAA”

Like I said in my previous comment, he was rushed to the big leagues and that was a mistake. He played in six AAA games before they called him up. Hopefully right now, they’re righting that wrong by giving him extended time to develop and fix his issues.

“What is he learning new there he’s already proven he’s good there”

Are you really asking me what a player learns in the minors? He played 34 games in AAA prior to this season. Gee, I don’t know, maybe he’s learning how to fix the issues he’s had with his swing? Maybe he’s learning a new position (second base, which he’s played a little of in Syracuse)?

Struggling prospects are often traded to struggling teams in hopes of finding untapped value. This is especially true in returns for rental players. It’s not a crazy stretch of imagination to think with a little patience Baty will provide that value. His struggles just make him more of a trade candidate and he could be part of a package so the value of a trade doesn’t depend entirely upon him. As far as having Berger, there are a multitude of reasons that isn’t much of a deterrent from acquiring another third baseman.

Burger is not a 3b and I doubt the Marlins want to keep seeing him roll out there. He’s a DH with the occasional 1b sprinkled in. Half a season of Scott for Baty and two lotto tickets is a great return for Miami.

We would have to know what deals they are offering. Maybe those teams have other plans? That’s all speculation. This thread is about a package that includes Baty AND a SS prospect and if the Marlins would take it.

The point is the article doesnt even mention the mets so its logical the teams actually mentioned would offer more than a 4a player like baty and a random ss nobody even cares to name…fwiw tge marlins like burger alot and control him for the next 3 + years as well as edwards who they just called up to play ss..they need outfielders cf specifically since jazz is a 2b

Dozens? Baty is a recent top 30 prospect. Coupled with one or two low level prospects (depending on value), I doubt more than 3-4 teams would be willing to match. Kirby Yates could be had for far less than that if teams just want quality bp arms.

While I get your point about the article not mentioning the Mets, dismissing Brett Baty as a mere “4A player” is shortsighted. Baty is one of the Mets’ top prospects with significant potential. The Mets have a history of being willing to make big moves, and undervaluing Baty’s potential ignores how trades can balance both current needs and future prospects. As for the Marlins, their interest in players like Burger and Edwards doesn’t negate their need for young, high-potential talent like Baty. Trades are about more than just immediate fit—they’re strategic plays for long-term success.

I like that move. Maybe eventually Baty comes around but he has shown next to nothing for a couple of years and the Mets other potential players for third starting with Vientos. Maybe p/u a couple more bullpen pieces from Miami by adding Tylor Magill who’s been SOOO inconsistent for three years and then they can then DFA Dieckmann too. Sorry for misspelling anyone’s name

SP probably draw highest returns this deadline, unfortunately, marlins best 3 LT injured. Alcantra out all year then a FA for ’25. Ryan Weathers/jesus Luzardo 60d DL.

1 guy who “might” draw interest is Trevor Rogers. he’s his own worst enemy all to often and could do perhaps with a change of scenery. Reminds me in a way of a guy named Andy Hassler, who played decades ago and pitched “just good enough” to lose despite having good stuff.

It seems clear that Mr. Bendix has carte blanche to do a complete rebuild. He’ll pretty much take what he considers the best offer for any player that another team wants.

He has next to nothing to build upon. His best players are injured and may never be as good as they once were. We may well be looking at the sort of thing the Orioles had to do – which is long-term / don’t shortcut anything.

    I honestly don’t trust Scott.

    Tanner Scott

    ERA 1.42
    FIP 3.46
    SIERA 4.05
    FRA 3.85

Guy’s overperforming his expected numbers so I don’t know how sustainable that is. His K-BB% is 12.4. Not terrible but not great either. I guess if a contender can get him for cheap, he’s a decent middle-innings bullpen guy but I wouldn’t trust him in a closer role in the playoffs.

    As for the others…

    Andrew Nardi

    ERA 4.72
    FIP 2.53
    SIERA 3.00
    FRA 3.67
    K-B%: 21.4

    Calvin Faucher

    ERA 3.55
    FIP 2.71
    SIERA 3.87
    FRA 4.41
    K-BB%: 13.1

    Declan Cronin

    ERA 3.35
    FIP 2.49
    SIERA 3.37
    FRA 4.44
    K-BB%: 14.7

I’d suggest taking a flyer on Andrew Nardi. He seems to be the most stable in terms of overall metrics. Take away his first two outings of the season from his ERA, it drops from 4.86 to 3.41, which is more in line with his underlying metrics. He’s got big strikeout stuff with a 21.4 K-BB%.

Scott was better last year from a peripheral perspective. He had a sub 3 BB/9 last year. This year, he’s at 5.4 BB/9 which is a lot more in line with the 5.8 BB/9 he posted 2017-2022.

Additionally, his K’s are down, and his WHIP is up.

I think Edman could make some sense for the Marlins. He’s a bounce back candidate he could have more value next July than he has now. He also plays 3 different positions that the Marlins are weak at so it would give them some options on how to fill their roster out. Scott I think is too much like Dillon Head they are darn similar players. Perhaps Scott could be dealt and Cardinals get Head back. And Marlins could still have Edman.
