Phillies Acquire Carlos Estevez

By Nick Deeds | July 28, 2024 at 12:58am CDT

The Phillies are acquiring right-hander Carlos Estevez from the Angels, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Phillies are sending pitching prospects George Klassen and Samuel Aldegheri to Anaheim in return for Estevez. Both teams have since announced the trade.

Estevez, 31, first joined the Angels on a two-year deal prior to the 2023 season on the heels of a breakout season with the Rockies where he posted a 3.47 ERA despite playing half his games at Coors Field. It’s a deal that’s gone quite well for Anaheim, as the righty was an All-Star in 2023 with a sterling 1.80 ERA in the first half last year. Estevez’s overall season numbers took a dive after he struggled badly to a 6.59 ERA with a 4.46 FIP in 27 1/3 innings of work after the All-Star break last year, but he’s rebounded in a big way in 2023 to become one of the most attractive rental relief arms on the market.

This year, Estevez has collected 20 saves as the Angels’ closer in 34 innings of work while posting a strong 2.38 ERA in that time. While his 25.8% strikeout rate actually comes in a tad below his 27.8% figure from last year, he’s taken a major step forward in terms of command this year. After walking 11% of batters faced last season and entering the 2024 campaign having offered free passes to 9.3% of opponents in his career, Estevez has cut his walk rate to a clip of just 4% this year.

In conjunction with just three home runs allowed this season, it’s left the right-hander with a strong 2.85 FIP, a 2.67 xERA, and a 3.35 SIERA that all indicate he’s been one of the league’s best late-inning relief arms.

In trading for Estevez, the Phillies have not only replaced right-hander Seranthony Dominguez in their bullpen after shipping him to Baltimore yesterday in order to acquire outfielder Austin Hays, but they’ve found a bonafide closer to pitch the ninth inning after the struggles of southpaw Jose Alvarado left him replaced by right-hander Jeff Hoffman in recent weeks. The addition of Estevez should allow Alvarado, Hoffman, and lefty Matt Strahm to pitch in leverage spots earlier in games, deepening a bullpen that has posted a middling 3.96 ERA (16th in the majors) this year as the club gears up for a playoff run.

In return for Estevez’s services, the Phillies are sending a pair of pitching prospects to the Angels. Both rank within the top ten of the Philly system as of Baseball America’s most recent update, with Klassen ranked fifth in the system while Aldeghri currently ranks seventh. Klassen in particular was highlighted by BA’s Josh Norris earlier this month as a notable riser in the club’s system following his promotion to High-A earlier this year. The club’s sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft, the 22-year-old dominated Single-A pitching to the tune of a 0.71 ERA in nine starts prior to his promotion. While he’s struggled a bit more following his move to the next level with a 4.22 ERA in five starts, he’s still striking out an impressive 35.2% of batters faced even in High-A. A 10% walk rate raises some mild control concerns, but it’s easy to imagine the righty moving quickly through an Angels organization that tends to be aggressive in promoting youngsters.

As for Aldegheri, the lefty signed out of Italy with the Phillies back in 2019 but has raised his stock somewhat this year in 78 innings split between the High-A and Double-A levels. The 22-year-old sports a 3.23 ERA on the year with an excellent 34% strikeout rate against a 10% walk rate across fifteen starts. While BA suggests that the lefty lacks an obvious plus pitch, solid command and a five-pitch mix could nonetheless make him a viable starter in the big leagues. The pitching-heavy return for Estevez should be helpful for an Angels club that lacks much certainty in the rotation going forward, especially if veteran southpaw Tyler Anderson is also dealt before the deadline.

Not long ago, “insert name of choice here” was the best arm in the “insert name of team here” system. But then, “insert name of choice here” underwent “insert elbow/shoulder procedure of choice here” and never found his stuff if/when he was healthy again. It happens all the time. The number of prospects who don’t make it, no matter their talent levels, drawfs those who do. You’re in a position to win the World Series, and you get a chance to improve your team by trading away the best arm in your system? Do it every time. There’s always another Ricky Tiedemann, Casey Mize, Forrest Whitley, Dustin May, et al, to churn through.

I’m in a conflict with myself on this one. I wanted Estevez as one of my top choices from the RH relievers available, as I feel they needed 3 BP arms, 2 RH and 1 LH , as well as a SP and maybe an upgrade in the OF. I like Hays and think he’ll be a good fit,and think Estevez is. vg pickup, but didn’t think he would be as expensive , as I had Klassen as the Phils #6 prospect and Sam at #11 a bit of an overpay for a rental RP. I also think that the Phils should add Tanner Scott,in case Alvarado + Strahm can’t regain their pre-July form, and and maybe even add another good RH reliever Kopech,Yates, Fairbanks, LeClerc and hopefully a SP such as Jack Flaherty, and the only untouchable prospects Id have would be Painter, Crawford, + Miller(Caba + Tait being close to untouchable).

I’m with you on this. Great guy to pick up but at too great a cost. Eflin only yielded a number 13 and 18. And like you I rate Klassen very high and would even put him in the top 4, certainly in front of Abel.

Klassen has the best fastball that has ever existed in the Phillies farm system, it is prime time Atlanta Craig Kimbrel level and Dumbrowski just dealt seven years of that for two months of this garbage.

Estévez Can be dominating on the pictures mound 95 to 97 mile an hour fastball and throws a hard slider he can definitely close out games. This is the final piece. The Phillies need in the bullpen.

Painter averages 98.4 mph on his fastball in the 5th inning of games, and Andrew Baker hits 104 on the radar gun, but I understand your point. Klassen is a very promising prospect, who could be a RP next year or a starter in the following.

But if you read the Phillies prospect lists……NOBODY was making that claim.

Coming out of College he SHOULD dominate low A-Ball players as he is MUCH older. Young kids chase, which is why high velocity low accuracy pitchers rack up Ks at the lower levels. But 96-98 is not some legendary FB and with only 2 pitches so far he will likely shift to the pen.

Maybe one day he will add some pitches, improve his control, as well as add to his FB and make it in the bigs, but this is not a 19 year old ki.d either.

The Phillies lost to the Diamondbacks because their lineup did not show up. That’s 100% the reason. Same as their 2011 exit in Game Five vs the Cardinals. If you can’t hit in the playoffs then you can’t win. Nothing is as important as is your lineup.

Excellent return for the Angels. Critical piece for the stretch run for the Phillies.

Probably an overpay long-term for the latter, but championships are expensive, and prospects often bust.

Both prospects are talented. They’re young and imperfect like most low level pitching prospects. Klassen is a triple digit thrower. If he busts as a starter he’s still a high octane relief option. Estevez is a free agent in two months. It’s a quality return for 8 weeks of Estevez. Now they need to add another 15 of this caliber of prospect to create depth. Some will flame out and some will be come productive big leaguers– it’s a numbers game. Philly’s 28th best prospect will land inside our top 10– that’s how bad our system is.

I think about how much talent the Angels traded away last year. This may have been our key trade piece and we get back last years 6th round pick, who has been good for 38 A ball innings. And that includes college.

This kind of mud I didn’t want.

Take them rankings with a grain of salt. Both players were ranked in the 20’s up until recently & neither player is above AA so jumping that quick up the rankings based off low level minor league games is questionable.

I think you should read the recent Baseball America feature on both pitchers. Klassen has made strong in-season improvements, and was overpowering in high-A. As Kiley McDaniel of ESPN mentioned after the trade, several MLB execs ranked Klassen above Abel in recent discussions. BA’s mid season ranking raised these two to #5 and 7 in the Phillies system this week.

MLB Pipeline place them at #3 and #8 in the Angels system now. Not sure what more anyone could possibly expect for two months of a late reliever.

Couldn’t disagree more with how you’re assessing these guys. There’s a uniform consensus among prospect media that the Angels made out *very well* on this trade. And on Baseball Trade Values, they rate it a major overpay in favor of Anaheim.

Yeah, Baseball America is never wrong… lol

Like I stated & you confirmed… They were raised just recently based off play in lower level minors “overpowering in high-A”… which by the way, his ERA jumped in the 4s in High-A. Sure, he was still striking out batters at a high rate but giving up runs in a low level. I also don’t care what the media thinks. I didn’t even say it was a bad trade for them. I think they made a fine trade because Estevez is just a rental. I’m only pointing out that their rankings were recently just pushed that high (factual) based off low level production. You should temper your expectations. Klassen, for 1, came out of college… He should be dominating High-A.

It is a good return. Two top 7 prospects for 20 or so innings of Carlos Estevez.

The Angel’s farm system lacks starting pitchers and power bats. This trade at least gives some potential to one of the areas. They are ranked #3 and #8 in the Angel’s system according to MLB.com.

They still have some valuable trade chips in Anderson and Rengifo as well as a host of mediocre trade chips. Deadline is fast approaching. Minasian needs to get to work. This trade is fine, but we need more.

J.T. Realmuto was not some generic Carlos rented for two months.

This is like Fernando Tatis Jr. for James Shields though the Sox wish that was a two month rental.

I would have hoped for a more refined prospect with a little pedigree.

Who is the last plus pitcher this organization has developed? Who is the last plus position player?

Not some guy who spent almost no time in the minor leagues, but from start to finish.

One isn’t much of a prospect. The other might be, but he didn’t have success at high A, wasn’t good in college, and his claim to fame is 38 innings at A ball. He’s not polished, needs a lot of work, and he’s high variance, and is now in a system that that has no idea what it’s doing.

The Angels had a ton of question marks this year, almost every one of them was answered in the negative.

Everywhere I am reading and hearing including the Angels broadcast feel the Angels got a higher value than expected for Estevez.

Many people the Angels should have only gotten ONE of those pitchers straight up for Estevez, so to get 2 higher ranked prospects, that is a good value

Obviously, these are not can’t miss prospects. Both of these are prospects that are on the rise, meaning they are climbing up the prospect ranks.

Both are missing bats, Klassen has 89 SO in 59 innings. Aldegheri has 109 SO in 79 innings Klassen has a little higher ceiling due to velocity, but he has been injured a lot.

The Phillies will find out if it is a good trade in the next couple months. The Angels won’t know for a couple years.

And now he gets the chance to play deadline poker for a few days while knowing that he does not have to make a move.

@Pinstripe- Amen to that. I would have loved to see Estevez and Rengifo going to the Bronx in a package deal. But instead, they’re getting another LH OF whose hitting 1-point above league average. How much more could the Marlins of possibly been asking for that Tanner Scott was not included in the deal with Chisholm? The back end of the Yankees bullpen is/has been/will continue to be a very big problem if they don’t address it in the next few days. Bc I’m really starting to have a strong dislike for Clay Holmes. And you can see it in his face now when he comes into the game that even he knows he’s going to blow it, and he’s about to soil his pants

Looks like the Angels wanted pitchers. Plus two pitchers not on the 40 man roster unlike Norby and Stowers. The Angels are looking for roster flexibility. Similar to the Rays getting 3 prospects from the 2023 draft for Elfin. They won’t have to protect them until 2026.

I feel like there’s more talent nowadays, so that makes variance much higher. Also, it’s become a young players league. Guys get called up much younger. We’re seeing a lot of post breakouts/late 20s-early 30s breakouts, and I think it’s b/c of that. They’re “prospects” without the label, and getting seasoned in the big leagues nowadays

Not really. Klassen was a high variance guy who didn’t pitch last year and is throwing way more strikes in pro ball than he did in college. Don’t know much about Aldegheri, but it seems like his stuff is slightly up and he’s performing well.

There’s really not much separating guys outside of the top tier of prospects.

I’d argue that prospect lists aren’t reactive enough seeing as Marco Luciano is somehow still a consensus top 100 prospect.

Personally I would think he would be the closer. Teams like to throw an older player with that “closer” label in the role just to fill the spot (knowing that the 9th isn’t even the most important inning because, among other reasons, the closer can afford to give up, say 2 runs in a three run game with no ill effect but other relievers can’t do that cause every run counts). They also like to keep young guys from closing to get lower arb. salaries (and like to give the role to a guy with a set contract, especially a short one to get that little trade value boost that exists for some reason-not that it applies here). I also think they don’t like their relievers all desiring to get the closer role. It creates a scenario where you are possibly rooting against your own teammate and team for personal reasons. Potential half-conscious animosity.

A for Angels. A+ As good as it gets. 2 pitching prospects for a rental reliever? Both having fantastic years. 1 with great stuff. Other great mix.

D for Philly. I appreciate the winning move but wow did they pay the price. Uncle Charlie has been fantastic but projects to regress. Obviously still a great pen arm just not as great as he’s been. 1 arm doesn’t have impressive stuff. Both aren’t close to being mlb ready. But still 2 nice arms. World series is the goal. You do what you have to do. I think I would have looked in another direction. Puk? Yimi? Multiple years. Beatable trade packages. Lots of relievers out there.

What credible list has him at top 100? Griff McGarry was a hot prospect when they tried to make him a starter and now he’s back to pen and can’t get to majors either. Klassen has a great fastball but still most consider him a future reliever (probably a solid one no doubt) but that’s why this trade makes sense. I am also not taking the opinion of people on here over DD, a consensus top five gm in baseball with a crapload body of work.

Bart – I think most of us agree the Angels is a dreadfully run organization with Moreno as the owner. Every team has injuries. The difference is they have depth to cover them. The Angels don’t have the depth. They have a mix of bloated veteran contracts and AAA caliber players, many of whom are doing well as they learn. On a well constructed team, however, these kids would be learning at AAA while the quality major league guys handle business.

It blows my mind about deals like this. Still GMs do it. How many of these young players actually make it? Not many. Unless they are on the cusps of the their first call to the show. Both these kids. I’m sure they are good but how close are they? The angels need league ready prospects. Not kids that are two or three seasons away. Maybe. Perry is just stocking the shelf’s for whoever takes over and he goes down as one of the worst GM’s in Angels history. And that’s saying something

What exactly are you using to rate PM when he’s the only GM since Bill Stoneman to actually pay attention to the farm system? Being a good GM isn’t about playing fantasy baseball with the open market. It’s also about building a foundation through youth. Bill Bavasi was a good GM for building the core that eventually won the World Series. His strengths were less on the open market. Bill Stoneman was a good GM who could do both, but also pulled the reigns on trading the farm, which is why their run extended through 2009, with some of their carryovers keeping the Angels in the race for a number of years after he left. In order for PM or any other GM to be successful, he needs to just keep doing what he’s doing: turning to youth and drafting better. When it’s time to supplement, then well if it’s time to let him go and bring in someone who can make those deals.

Tanner Scott is next and a bat. Maybe a starting rotation piece. Hope Walker stays on the injured list and Turnbull can return but if not they need Suarez healthy and another starting arm to get them into October and keep the other starters fresh. But who?
I’d see what the cubs would want for Ian Happ. Tough player that could fit in the lineup and clubhouse and is an upgrade over Rojas at the plate. I know the Rojas defensive defenders will disagree but, Rojas can play defense in the 8th and 9th and his fans can tune in. I’d put Happ in left and platoon Hays and Marsh in center.

Angels struck oil. Phillies acquired a dumpster fire in exchange.

The Angels are to the Phillies what the Kansas City A’s were to the Yankees.

Wasn’t it the other way around? A’s trading their best young players to the Yankees?

What the hell was that pop up ad I just had to watch?

Selling ad space is totally understandable… forcing pop ups with predatory fremium apps is not cool.

Dombro has a history of trading away the farm in an effort to win it all. This trade with the Angels is yet another example of that. Estevas has done well this year in a small sample of 34 IP. However, his history isn’t anything to get excited about. Of course, he’s never been with a winner, so maybe the move to Philly where that isn’t the case, may inspire him not to implode. Frankly, I was fine with Hoffman and Strahm as our RH/LH duo for the 8th and 9th innings. Don’t see any reason to knock each of them down a peg.

I didn’t know much about Estevez but I’m more concerned about the outfield situation. I don’t believe Austin Hays will be much if any help and now reports say the Phillies are interested in Tommy Pham.
Pham is a 36 year old outfielder with a 260s average, little power and a terrible attitude. I have no idea why anyone would be interested in him and….I thought we would chase more power. Come on Dombrowski, MORE HOME RUNS!

@medicineman maybe they go after pillar. Shouldn’t cost much and he hasn’t been bad this year.

And the Angels fleece the Phillies again. Getting 2 very good young pitching prospects for a rental with a 4.29 career ERA who guarantees absolutely nothing as far as even reaching the World Series, let alone winning it.
How did trading Moniak for a rental Synersgaard work out? No World Series win there. Sure, Moniak isn’t a star, but what do the Phillies have to show for that trade?
The Angels obviously knew Marsh can’t hit left handed pitching, so they had no problem saying goodbye to him. They got a solid starting catcher for the next 10 years for a part time outfielder. Yes, O’Hoppe was blocked by Realmuto but the Phillies could have and should have gotten a better return for him trading him to another team.
Another big win for the Angels
