Yankees Acquire Jazz Chisholm Jr.

By Nick Deeds | July 28, 2024 at 12:59am CDT

Jazz Chisholm Jr. is on his way to the Big Apple. The Yankees announced they’ve acquired Chisholm from the Marlins for three prospects: catcher Agustin Ramirez and infielders Jared Serna and Abrahan Ramirez.

Chisholm, 26, was a consensus top-100 prospect when the Marlins acquired him from the Diamondbacks in the deal that sent right-hander Zac Gallen to Arizona. While Gallen has blossomed into one of the NL’s top starters since arriving in the desert, Chisholm’s time in Miami has been far less consistent. After a rookie 2021 campaign where he split time between shortstop and second base with roughly league average offense, Chisholm committed to second full-time in 2022 and broke out in a big way with an excellent .254/.325/.535 (136 wRC+) slash line that year. Unfortunately, Chisholm’s All-Star campaign was cut short by a stress fracture in his back that limited him to just 60 games that year.

That injury combined with the Marlins’ lack of quality options in the outfield led Miami to move Chisholm out of the infield ahead of the 2023 season, installing him in center field. The results of that experiment were somewhat mixed, as Chisholm took a step backwards on offense with a 103 wRC+ and was limited to just 97 games by a bout of turf toe but proved to be surprisingly solid defensively in center with +4 Outs Above Average, although Defensive Runs Saved disagreed with that assessment and graded him as one of the ten worst outfield defenders in the sport last year with a -14 figure. Chisholm’s offense hasn’t rebounded much in 2024 as he’s slashing .249/.323/.407 (104 wRC+) on the year, but his defensive metrics have settled in a bit more to paint him as a roughly scratch defender (+1 OAA, -4 DRS) in center field. Perhaps most importantly, the youngster has stayed healthy and on the field this year as he’s appeared in 101 of Miami’s 104 games while even getting some work in at second base again in recent weeks.

Chisholm’s versatility is surely part of what makes him an attractive addition for the Yankees. While Aaron Judge and Juan Soto’s otherworldly 2024 campaigns have kept the Yankees offense afloat for the most part to this point and allowed the club to post a solid 60-45 record overall, they’ve gone just 6-13 in the month of July thanks in part to a lackluster supporting cast that has seen only catcher Austin Wells post above average numbers by measure of wRC+ among healthy Yankees players with at least 100 PA this year not named Judge or Soto.

With so many spots in the lineup that could do with an upgrade, Chisholm’s slightly better than average bat and versatility figure to be a major asset for the Yankees. SNY’s Andy Martino was among those to suggest following news of the trade that Chisholm’s position with the Yankees is not yet fully set in stone, and it’s easy to see why. Chisholm’s ability to play center could allow manager Aaron Boone to turn to struggling left fielder Alex Verdugo, who has posted a wRC+ of just 56 since the start of June, less often while pushing Judge to a less taxing spot in the outfield or perhaps even allowing him to DH on days where both Chisholm and Verdugo are roaming the outfield.

On the other hand, Gleyber Torres is having a relative down season (96 wRC+) as the club’s regular second baseman and third base has been a massive hole for the Yankees all season, though neither Torres nor Chisholm have any experience at the hot corner in the majors. Given Torres’s excellent 119 wRC+ against lefties and Verdugo’s brutal 63 wRC+ against fellow southpaws this season, it’s possible even to imagine Chisholm (who sports a decent 96 wRC+ against southpaws in spite of his own lefty bat) playing the outfield against lefty starters while mixing into the infield more often against righties, allowing the Yankees to play matchups more effectively for both Verdugo and Torres, especially in the event that New York brass don’t want to have either Chisholm or Torres learn third base on the fly.

Of course, another factor in Chisholm’s value to the Yankees is the fact that he’s controlled through the end of the 2026 season. For an offense that figures to see Soto, Torres, Verdugo, J.D. Davis, and perhaps Anthony Rizzo all depart for free agency following the 2024 campaign, adding Chisholm to the lineup as a long-term building block alongside sluggers Judge and Giancarlo Stanton as well as youngsters Wells, Anthony Volpe, and Ben Rice offers the Yankees the ability to decide Chisholm’s long-term home on the diamond based on both his defensive performance and the needs of the roster surrounding him in an offseason where re-signing Soto figures to be the top priority. It’s possible to imagine Chisholm settling in as a fixture of the club’s mix in either the infield or outfield depending on both the club’s external additions this winter and the performance of up-and-coming youngsters in the club’s system like infielder Oswald Peraza and outfielder Jasson Dominguez, both of whom could vie for everyday roles in 2025.

As for the Marlins, they’ll receive a package of three prospects in return for the youngster who has been the club’s lone productive hitter this year ever since Luis Arraez was dealt to San Diego back in May. The closest to making an impact at the major league level of that group is Ramirez, a 22-year-old catcher who is already on the 40-man roster and reached the Triple-A level earlier this year. The youngster is just the #20 prospect in the Yankees system according to MLB Pipeline but is a far more robust third in the system according to Baseball America.

A bat-first catcher who slashed an impressive .290/.372/.570 in 58 games at the Double-A level this year prior to his promotion to the next level, Ramirez offers enticing raw power and a knack for making contact in the zone, though upper-level breaking balls have given him trouble and both Pipeline and BA suggest that he’ll need to improve his swing decisions a bit to reach his potential as a hitter. Scouts have plenty of questions about whether or not Ramirez will be able to stick behind the plate in the majors, though there’s optimism that he’ll have a future in the big leagues even if he ends up moving off catcher to a more offensively demanding position like first base.

Also heading to Miami in the return is Serna, a 22-year-old infielder in the midst of a solid season at the High-A level. The club’s #19 prospect per Pipeline and #11 prospect per BA, Serna has slashed a respectable .253/.341/.444 in 88 games with the Yankees’ affiliate in Hudson Valley while swiping 11 bags and slugging 13 home runs, although his body doesn’t project for much more power and he’s expected to slug at below average levels in the majors. Serna is also viewed as unlikely to stick at shortstop long-term, with BA noting that his fringey arm means he’s likely to end up at second base although he does have experience in the outfield and at the hot corner as well.

As for the latter Ramirez, he signed with the Yankees out of Venezuela back in 2022 on a $30,000 bonus (h/t Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com) and made his stateside debut earlier this year. In 49 games in complex ball this year, the 19-year-old has looked good with an excellent .348/.447/.513 slash line in 189 trips to the plate while splitting time between shortstop as well as second and third base. Ramirez is not ranked within the Yankees’ top-30 prospects by any major public-facing evaluators at the moment, although given his youth and big numbers in complex ball it wouldn’t be a shock to see him make some noise in that regard with Miami at some point in the future.

Craig Mish of SportsGrid first reported the Yankees and Marlins were in talks about a deal that’d send Chisholm to New York for three prospects. Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic was first to say the deal was done. ESPN’s Alden González reported Agustin Ramirez was the headliner and Abrahan Ramirez’s inclusion. Christina De Nicola of MLB.com had Serna’s inclusion.

I think he’ll make a ‘smooth’ transition into the pinstripes, and he’ll have a real ‘fusion’ with his teammates and fans when they see him ‘swing’ the bat and ‘bebop’ around the bases.

Can someone explain how this helps the bullpen? I’m at a loss to see how a 2B/CF helps you protect any lead you may have.

This guy doesn’t even fill the existing holes the Yankees have in their lineup.

8 am viewing this as Cashman doing something just so Michael Kay doesn’t say he did nothing.

He’s young and athletic which is a step up from the usual plodding Cashman addition. Still got Chad Green and guys like that out there for the bullpen restyling.

Chisholm is an average bat with average to below average defense at two positions. He is also injury prone. Other than being younger and faster than most of the Yankees, he fits.

Joe, I totally agree. But, I’m not a fan of this move outside of that context. I feel that the Yanks have/had better options. To be frank, I think he’s one of the most overrated players in the game.

We desperately need a closer too, imho. Tanner Scott is equally, or more, important.

      And please fire Boone.

Firing Boone is the most important move the Yankees can make. His managing/mismanaging the bullpen led to another disaster last night. Why was Weaver out to pitch the 8th after pitching the 7th, and why was Holmes on for a five out save?? Relievers don’t like to sit down and get back up. That’s a job for a starter.

Haha. They have two hitters in the lineup. Everyone knew that at the start of the season and you want to blame Boone? They had a run of good fortune with the pitching to start the year but reality has set in. Stop paying ridiculous contracts like DJ, Stanton, Judge, etc. it doesn’t work and any manager with this crop would be failing. Jazz helps but there are still plenty of holes to fill.

You must not watch Yankees games. Boone is the worst manager in MLB. Cashman did not fill out a lineup card that had Jahmai Jones leading off and JD Davis cleaning up. Cashman is not the one leaving relievers in too long and for multiple innings. The players usually compensate for Boone’s incompetence, but the pitching falling off and injuries to Stanton and Rizzo expose Boone for the braying donkey that he is. The sooner he goes back to the broadcast booth the better.

You’re right I don’t. O’s fan but Rizzo and Stanton aren’t the answer. Losing Rizzo to Rice isn’t their problem. He hasn’t done much in two years now. Stanton is always hurt. Boone is trying to win games with inconsistent hitting and staring pitching. Their starting pitching doesn’t go deep in games so he’s forced to rely on the bullpen pitchers who produce. If other guys were hitting it would be a moot point but since that is not happening the bullpen. Is being asked to pick up the slack. Enjoy the rest of the season and I hope they sign Soto to 10+ years.

I don’t think any of us blame Boone for the roster construction. But, Boone’s team is performing ahead of only the White Sox over the past 30-40 games. And, it is every year.

Bottom line: Boone’s team has more talent than the level at which they’re performing, so yes, that falls squarely on Boone’s shoulders.

Is it his fault he has Jahmai Jones and JD Davis on the roster? No. Is it his fault he bats Jones 1 and Davis 4 in the lineup? Yes.

Is it Boone’s fault that he talks about how well players are performing when they have some of the worst stretch of baseball of their careers? Yes.

Good managers get the best out of their teams. Mediocre managers get teams to perform to their baseball cards. Poor managers get teams who consistently fall short of their expectations.

No. Your welcome for how the team is assembled. Cashman does not fill out the lineup card or manage the pitching staff. You don’t watch the Yankees play if you think this is about “construction of the roster”. Just because Aaron Hicks is “on the roster” doesn’t mean that you write his name on the lineup card 120 times. Cashman didn’t say “I got you JD Davis now put him in the cleanup spot”. Boone is a donkey’s hind quarters.

As a guy who doesn’t pay super close attention nowadays to MLB, how do the players get on with Boone? I always thought it was an odd hire. I think players really respond well to older managers in general. I also think they are better managers generally. There are some good young managers though. Kevin Cash comes to mind. Former catchers seem to make good managers too.

No. As JoeSays stated, I think there were better IF options suited for the Yankees lineup. More importantly, I feel like their prospect Ramirez, who is regarded as a very good hitting catcher, should have been used for Tanner Scott instead of Jazz.

Of course, it is possible Scott was discussed and they weren’t willing to move him, but I doubt it. If they weren’t, the Angels have a decent closing option as well.

Jazz is a typical Cashman bandaid. I HOPE I am proven wrong by this move. But for now, I don’t like it for the Yankees.

Completely agree with you YC. Chisholm is one of the most overrated players in MLB imo. He acts as if he’s a perennial All Star but his #’s say he’s an Average hitter and Below Average fielder. On top of that, where do they intend to play him? CF? 2B? Mix of both? Bc with Stanton coming back Monday and tying the the DH spot on most days, it seems like they’re planning on having Chisholm in CF and moving Judge over to LF? That would move Verdugo to the 4th OF, and only playing against RHP. Idk, I just feel like they have far bigger and greater needs at the back end of the BP as well as 3B. Do you they maybe try Gleyber at 3B with Jazz at 2B and see how that goes? Idk, I’m just not a big fan of the move at the moment. It’ll be interesting to see how Verdugo responds/reacts to this move, bc it feels like they’re throwing in the towel on hopes of him turning it around at the plate this year. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up moving him before the deadline. On the positive side of this, Jazz seems like the type of player who could really benefit from playing in NY in the pinstripes and elevate his game. And he’s under team control for a few more years, and if he’s their 2B in 2025 I wouldn’t be upset at all with that as his offensive profile is very similar if not better than Gleyber’s. But they still need Relief Pitching!!! I’m really starting to have a deep dislike for Clay Holmes and his bright red rosacea cheeks

It’s a typical Hal Cashman / Yankees type move. Eye-candy catching that will result in some highlight reel type entertainment. What it won’t do is improve the team in a solid way.

As I wrote under the Winker article – it’s Stearns with the Mets that has been making a series of subtle moves that ultimately brings a MLB team success.

Another panic move by Cashclown. Ramirez Is a better prospect than Austin Wells; likely was in line to be Trevino’s platoon partner in ‘25.

Chisholm, a disruptive presence in the clubhouse will not be much of an upgrade over Verdugo and forces Judge into becoming the regular left fielder.

Empty stats finally gone. I remember having conversations with a couple people in the Marlins FO around when they traded for him, and everything I said at the time happened, even theoversensationalized things i said in frustration…Great job guys. Real great job

Got to see a historical rare moment where Jazz did something that mattered in a game for the 3rd time in his entire career, a few days ago, so a good way for him to go out as a Marlin

Marlins apparently looking for all the 2nd baseman for the last 101 years. Can’t have enough of those for them…As I said previously, it’s obvious they’re desperate for offensive impact of any kind, especially c9rner bats, and the returns they’ve gotten so far, and their drafting, reflects that

I’ll wait for the last piece on info going back, and ultimately, I’m glad to have Jazz off my team, but they once again handled this situation as poorly as possible, and asset management is just not in the Marlins vernacular, regardless of who is in their front office

These people should have been moved by last November, at the latest, like I said back then…

Please…please let 1-2 of 5hese guys they’ve gotten be something…I’m not being greedy; just give us 1 guy…

Lowe has 2 options after this year. Rays will pick up next year (10.5 mil/1 mil buyout). Jazz will probably get 5-6 mil in arb for 2025. So, doesn’t save them much.

If your scenario happens they pay Lowe $1 million and lesser 2b $5-6 million. They will
pick up the option because they can trade Lowe and he could easily get a better deal that 2/21 mil (his options) on the free agent market.

The Yankees are trading for the possibility that Jazz can be the impact bat many hoped he would be- maybe a change of scenery and a few strong hitters in the lineup will help him. Maybe not. Yankees fans will let him know soon enough if he’s helping or hurting the team.

The Yankees have very good depth at Catcher in the upper levels of the minors, so Ramirez is expendable.
I can appreciate the trade, Chisholm is essentially Torres’s replacement.

Personally, I prefer that the Yankees simply bench DJ, and give his playing time to Oswaldo Cabrera. The Yankees need him to gain confidence, and his price is affordable for the next 2-3 seasons.

They should focus on bullpen upgrades, and in 1.5-2 weeks, call Jasson up for good to replace Verdugo.

All things considered, the Yankees did well here. We have control of Jazz for 2 more years after this. Hate to part with Agustin given our catching situation behind Wells, but Naevaez looks like he will eclipse Trevino on the depth chart. Overall, solid trade for the Yankees

My hot take is that I like the deal. Jazz is a fairly speedy guy and a left-handed threat. He could provide the spark that the team needs to get out of this funk. Not to mention the fact that he’s versatile, and the Yankees love that ability.
Since Gleyber is a free agent at the end of this season and he’s had a terrible walk year, I suspect Jazz might become our new 2B in 2025.
This trade does not prevent the Yankees from getting Rengifo or Chapman either, btw.

C for Miami. Won’t punish them for being in love with massive power weak defenders. Ramirez 1 crushes the ball. Better prospect than both the Puk trade guys together. Not looking liking a plus defender at catcher. Can he stick at catcher maybe. If not you are looking at 1b dh. Ramirez #2 is a really promising low level bat. So promising he should easily make top 30. Great approach for so early. Projectible. Serna least exciting prospect but on path to the show.

B for NY. Didn’t give up a arm. Didn’t give up a premium position. They know their prospects well. I don’t think they trade someone they see as a all star. Think they can get the best out of Jazz. I imagine they are thrilled with this trade.

Might get good enough to be dh back up catcher. He has a lot to improve. I am not a catching expert so can’t say for certain. Henry Davis was as awful a catcher you see. Went to drive line in the winter and all the sudden wasn’t awful and if his bat would play he could catch a game or 2 a week. Ramirez has the arm and some framing so it’s a foundation to work with.

And Chisholm is very injury prone…

There was one GROSS Understatement in this article:

“Gleyber Torres is having a relative down season . . .”

“A RELATIVELY DOWN SEASON”? LOL – LOL – LOL!!!

Torres leads MLB 2Bs in ERRORS with 12, and he has the WORST FIELDING of ANY 2B in MLB who’s played more than 35 games.

    Torres has:

    * Dropped ROUTINE POP UPs

    * Failed to back-up 2nd on several steals, allowing the runner to take an extra base on overthrows, and

    * Failed to run after pop ups, causing Aaron Judge to risk injury trying to catch a ball that Torres should have EASILY caught.

On the plus side (sarcasm), Torres has Absolutely Sucked at bat for more than 95% of the season, only waking up some recently after being Humiliated by being benched several times for lack of effort & gross fielding errors.

Saying “Torres is having a relative down season” is like saying the Captain of the Titanic had ” a relative down” day when the Titanic sank & 1,517 people died.

Apparently, Cashman can’t sand the thought of not having an a-hole in the infield if he trades Gleyber.

So, he replies 1 a-hole with another a-hole.

Hopefully, this a-hole can at least hit & field.

But they should have just called up Durbin & handed him 2B. He’s a Joy to watch play, but nitwit Cashman won’t give a great httter who ALWAYS Hustles a chance because he’s only 5’6″ . . .

And EVERYBODY Knows that a 5’6″ player can’t possibly make it in MLB; isn’t that right, Altuve? ;-(

Yanks had to do something, while it was not the move I expected it does help them. They are barely scoring unless Judge and Soto are at the dish. The rest of that lineup has been trash except for Rice who’s been a nice surprise. Chaz will be an upgrade from Torres at 2B. This move should immediately trigger the Yanks to trade Gleyber. He’s still young with good upside but he’s been struggling in NY. Put a package together to SF for Chapman to address there other huge issue at 3B. Because it would be the proper thing to do but they won’t. They’ll play Chaz at 3B like idiots.

Chaz will be an upgrade from Torres at 2B.
      ===========================
      Maybe, maybe not.

Over the past 2.5 years, both have identical bWAR/650, with Gleyber having a higher total by virtue of more games.

Jazz is having a better year this year, but Gleyber is the hotter player. You get more control, but I’m guessing that both players run about even the rest of the way. Nor do I like the fit. If he doesn’t play 2nd, the he duplicates Grisham who duplicated Verdugo.

That said, your idea on Chapman is perfect. Having him behind Soto and Judge would be huge.

This is the MLB version of a square peg and round hole.
Jazz doesn’t fit with the Yankees at all! Poor defense in center, poor on base, hasn’t played second in how long? But hey, he occasionally runs into a home run.

I do think he and Stroman in the same locker room would be fun.

Hmmm? Marlins acquiring some thumpers who are almost MLB-ready. It’ll be interesting to see what they do with De La Cruz, Sanchez and Burger…and their SPs. Roster isn’t that bad next year if they keep the pieces in play and add those younger pieces. And we’ll still have the same problem with a whole new cast – bullpen.

What did I tell you back in Pctober/November? Should have traded people when they could have

Clearly we’re desperate for offensive impact/corner bats, as has been the approach the last 1.5 years to hope someone works out

Hopefully they finally let some of the young infielders play, but they already lost a bunch of those guys, and they shouldbhave been seeing what they had over a year ago

Finally called up Xavier Edwards 14 months after I was saying they should/was obvious he should have been (especially b/c we had nobody at his positions)…See what you have before going into an offseason

Yeah, I remember. To be fair, I think we all were stuck with the previous GM who was stubbornly set in what she wanted to do…that is when it didn’t get in the way of her self-promo stuff.

I’m curious to see how all this turns out now. While I have and may be bashing the Arraez trade for a long time, Bendix return for Puk gave me a little more confidence because, as much as I like Puk, that felt like an overpay by the D-Backs. And we’re seeing, that despite Gordon not lighting the world on fire, we got the better end of that Okert trade as well.

I hope we trade all of our relievers for as many young prospects and lottery tickets as possible. Hopefully Bendix acquires some young reliever possibilities with our trade chips that have lesser value.

One thing will be interesting for next year is the fact that, due to injuries, we’re going to end up keeping our most valued part of the team – our SPs. I know it’s an easy bet for people to count us out for next year, but if we have our pitchers, and they’re halthy, and we strike on some of these MLB-ready guys, .500 is in the realm of possibility next year…assuming Bendix doesn’t put together a bullpen that is just as implosive as Ng’s.

I actually was somewhat ok with the Puk return, until I remembered he had way more team control left than I was thinking…

The Arraez deal came way too late, and then you couldn’t chance it getting worse around what we have here, but you hope to get slightly better back in return, and obviously, you don’t want those guys falling off a cliff/getting injured literally immediately, but maybe that’s different if he’s traded back in November

Regardless, at least there is seemingly a direction, which is what I was saying

Going into next year, you add a couple of low/nothing cost veterans/flyers/former top prospects in a couple of areas, a couple of bullpen arms, and then hope the arms come back healthy/strong early, then trade them in early-mid May, then trade the veterans you signed
