Dodgers Designate Nick Ahmed For Assignment

By Anthony Franco | August 19, 2024 at 7:10pm CDT

The Dodgers designated shortstop Nick Ahmed for assignment and optioned rookie outfielder Andy Pages to Triple-A Oklahoma City this evening. The move opened spots on the major league roster for Max Muncy and Tommy Edman, both of whom have returned from the 60-day injured list. Ahmed’s DFA opened one spot on the 40-man roster, while the Dodgers transferred River Ryan to the 60-day IL to create an additional spot. Ryan underwent Tommy John surgery and is done for the season. Los Angeles also recalled catcher Hunter Feduccia and placed veteran backup Austin Barnes on the 10-day injured list with a toe fracture.

Ahmed signed with the Dodgers a month ago. With Mookie Betts and Miguel Rojas out at the time, Los Angeles added Ahmed directly onto the major league roster. The defensive stalwart started 14 games at shortstop. He continued to provide defensive value but didn’t produce much offensively. While Ahmed hit a go-ahead home run to help beat the Giants (his former team) early in his Dodger tenure, he ultimately hit just .229/.245/.292 in 49 trips to the plate.

Between San Francisco and L.A., Ahmed carries a .232/.271/.300 batting line through 221 plate appearances. While he has never been a huge offensive threat, Ahmed has particularly struggled at the dish over the last two seasons. The two-time Gold Glove winner remains a strong defender, but the lack of firepower at the plate has squeezed him off a trio of rosters within the past two seasons. The Dodgers have welcomed Betts and Rojas back in recent weeks. Even with Betts returning to the outfield, they were comfortable enough with their infield depth to waive deadline pickup Amed Rosario after five games.

Los Angeles now adds two more infield-capable players in Muncy and Edman. The former should return to his everyday work at third base, moving Enrique Hernández back into a utility role. Muncy has been out for three months after suffering an oblique strain that proved more significant than the team initially expected. The power-hitting infielder was out to a .223/.323/.475 start to the season.

Edman is a versatile defender who can play essentially anywhere aside from catcher. He has spent the entire 2024 campaign on the injured list. Edman underwent postseason surgery on his right wrist while he was a member of the Cardinals. St. Louis hoped he’d be ready around Opening Day, yet a much slower recovery process kept him from even going on a rehab assignment until mid-July. The Dodgers nevertheless acquired Edman alongside Michael Kopech in a three-team trade that was one of the biggest moves of deadline season. St. Louis landed Erick Fedde and Tommy Pham from Chicago, who centered their return around Miguel Vargas from Los Angeles.

The Stanford product is now set for his Dodger debut. Manager Dave Roberts told reporters last week that Edman will get the bulk of his work in center field (X link via Fabian Ardaya of the Athletic). A middle infielder by trade, Edman had never started a major league game in center until last season. The Cards gave him 310 2/3 innings there and were rewarded with strong defensive grades — which has been a theme for Edman no matter where he’s played — in that relatively limited sample.

Plugging Edman into the outfield squeezes Pages off the MLB roster for now. The 23-year-old has had a decent if unexceptional rookie season, hitting .246/.305/.388 across 394 trips to the plate. Kevin Kiermaier should move into a fourth outfield capacity while Pages gets everyday playing time for a couple weeks in OKC. Reporter Francys Romero tweets that the Dodgers are likely to recall the Cuban-born outfielder once active rosters expand to 28 players on September 1.

Jack Harris of the Los Angeles Times first observed that Pages and Ahmed were being sent out.

Tyler Wade is a better option for short term. X moves back if long term – or Tatis come back in 2 weeks and goes to SS? Peralta isn’t hurting SD in RF.

Low – a 9 inning ballgame where everyone made outs instead of hitting home runs is not the place to say 1 player in 1 play “cost the game”.

Not like a QB throwing 4 ints.

Brew – I’m hopeful Tstos will be back in 2 ish weeks. Also hopeful Kim isn’t out that long!

I agree RF is the desired spot but if Kim is out (might as well start figuring out SS now) then creativity will be the key. It’s probably Bog which can get Solano’s bat back in the lineup – defense drops some but offense might improve.

Eguy get a call up if Kim goes on IL? Rather see Tirso but positional wise – although Tirso is getting some 1b time at AAA now.

I wish they could free up more ABs for Solano. But the UT reported this morning that the team is apparently considering Cronenworth at SS if Kim is out long term, as they don’t want to move Bogey off of 2B.

But yeah, if Kim goes on IL I wonder who gets the call up – I think you’re right it will probably be Eguy

Brew – if the plan is to keep Bogey at 2b going forward, I’m actually fine with Cro being the guy for however long Kim is out. It makes sense to keep him acclimated at 2b. Cro might even be better when given 25-30 games than Bogey at this point!

I have to believe teams and players have some side conversations about the future – Kim declines and we want to keep you – or not – type things. Maybe the player, ala Soto, makes it abundantly clear, I’m testing waters, etc.

Kim has regressed offensively but would still want him there in 2025. The problem, if he wants a 4-5 year deal (and should), why do they with DeVries being 2 years out? You can’t extend / sign everyone for the next 10 years!
          Hopefully,

Tara, chemistry is real for sure and SD seems to have a great chemistry right now.

That said, a generational talent gets heathy then he helps the team.

Also, you are surely aware that Tatis has been in the dugout for every inning since he went on IL, right? He is seen cheerleading during the games. He was also on the field for 1/2 the season and wasn’t a problem.

Begs the question, what makes you think he will ruin the chemistry? Just hoping or hating on Tatis for hate sake?

“Enough already”..I get your point. 5+ years ago I knew the names and profiles of 90% of MLB players. These days I know about 50%(at best)of player names and profiles. MLB has done a MAJOR operating SHIFT in that(good)players no longer spend 4+ yrs in the minors. I’d estimate that 5+ yrs ago 80% of Major Leaguers were experienced players who’d already spent years honing the finer points of their craft in the minors. And today, the pace of Major League initial debuts is so dizzying that I don’t even bother trying to keep up. Major League baseball has clearly shifted from an experienced player model to a young, inexperienced(cheap) player model, which has lowered the level of play substantially in my honest opinion.

I’m sorry you can’t keep up. But can we ask a question, what exactly would you like to change? Pretty sure the Dodgers would have preferred to not have a team of all stars on the IL for half the season,.

But yeah, let’s limit the roster moves so you can keep up. Terribly sorry.

You guys don’t get my point……

You think I’m stupid? OK. Please who me what gains the Dodgers made with all these little moves.

Are the Dodgers even a team? Can we talk about their infield the way we talked about Garvey, Lopes, Russell, Cey? If a fan doesn’t follow Dodger news everyday on their smart phone they don’t even know who is on the team.

I worked in offices with a group of people that participated in Rotisserie Leagues. Every day – “Should I play player X tonight”. “Whatdaya think if I trade player Y for player Z?”. Every GD day. It was ridiculous. Warren Buffett didn’t become the most successful investor of 2-1/2 generations by buying and sell stocks each day because he thought he found something better.

Your “team” claimed a so-so SS for a month, then jettisoned him and claimed a different so-so SS? Wow! How exciting!!

I used to admire Andrew Friedman. Now it’s become clear that his success is based on having his pitchers overuse parts of their arm, shoulder, forearm, hand, fingers to get an edge, and when they get injured find a way to “fix” another guy looking for Andy Warhol’s: “15 Minutes of Fame” – which is about your concentration level so you can check the exciting news to find who is on the Dodgers roster today because someone else got used up.

“Are the Dodgers even a team? ”

          Yes. Definitely.

“Can we talk about their infield the way we talked about Garvey, Lopes, Russell, Cey?”

What does that have to do with anything?

What two SSs are you talking about? Also a transaction doesn’t have to be “exciting” to make sense.

“which is about your concentration level so you can check the exciting news to find who is on the Dodgers roster today because someone else got used up.”

          Seems like you’re contradicting yourself

Is it that it it takes too much concentration to keep up with the Dodgers’ transactions or is it that some undefined entity doesn’t have enough concentration to follow the Dodgers.

Your rant is all over the place. 3/10

In Samuel’s defense the Dodgers have made some head scratching moves this season as it seems they reached the limit off the great depth they’ve displayed in years past. Getting rid of Yarbrough, who was a rubber arm out of the bullpen, and now getting rid of Honeywell, who has also pitched pretty well. Sending Pages down but keeping Kiermaier. The revolving door of castoffs from other team’s as they’ve tried to piece together a roster (Biggio, Ahmed, Rosario, Trammell) all seem very Un-Dodgers like.

Honeywell wasn’t pitching well. He had a low ERA, but ERA isn’t a good stat for measuring pitcher performance.

Yarborough, wasn’t really pitching well either – largely because he wasn’t being used in the roll he’s best suited for – long reliever going through the order more than once

Keirmaier is a elite defender, Pages isn’t really a CFer. If they option Pages, they can keep him in the organization and call him up later. They can’t necessarily do that with Keirmaier – at least it’s a more complicated transaction.

Yes, the depth has been tested. They’ve had a ton of pitching injuries and a few key injuries to hitters. They brought in replacements as needed.

Yarbrough has a 6.10 ERA since June and the Dodgers needed someone who could play CF, as Andy Pages clearly cannot.

Honeywell started well and then had a 1.88 WHIP in his last 4 appearances prior to being let go.

To be fair, spending $175m less than The dodgers, we’ve had Gallen, Kelly, Erod, Monty, Marte, walker, perdomo, Moreno, Nelson, and others all out this year with walker Marte and gabby out right now. To only be 3-4 back of the dodgers is nuts especially spending so much less. Having less to trade with, less to buy with and less to buy international prospects with. Yes the dodgers are probably the most injured team in baseball but the dbacks are probably second to that. But they’re still right behind… just saying man..

Also to note, gotta tac on another $70m just for ohtani, that $2m a year doesn’t count hahaha. Or at least average it out over 20 Y to $35m per year on top.

Injuries have nothing to do with it. Dodgers are awful. your always om here looking to defend your awful team to anyone who says a negative thing about them. They suck and never win. I hope it makes a long warm cozy winter for you gnashing your teeth about how the rich kids took advantage of you. Might be easier for you if you simply enjoyed the division race.

We have a team of 7 posters who are each paid $25,000 for the regular season to use this screen name to combat poor saps like you. They each will get an additional $10,000 for the playoffs when we will add another 5 posters to the team. We concentrate only on Dbacks posters. Padres posters seem to be more sane and significantly more intelligent than the Snakes contingent.

If you would take the time to read the exchanges I have with other Snakes fans you’ll find compliments from me on what a strong team the Snakes have, statements about looking forward to the final weeks of the division race and civil discussions about baseball topics. It’s you who makes hyperbolic statements about how your opponents –at least LAD–“suck” and are “an awful team” etc etc. I’m sure you know that is all BS. You respond to every one of my posts and at the same time castigate me for responding to yours. Try raising the level of your discourse and we will all be better for it. Or STFU. There are three very good teams in the West race, none of them perfect, but all of them very competitive. You want to stay hung up on the big market versus small market thing, knock yourself out. But it’s boring. If your team had the same money they’d spend it. In any case the Snakes have put together an excellent squad. If your team wins, more power to you. I will be the first to say congrats.

I see all your comments to people who don’t like the dodgers. Your a sore loser and can’t take any negative comments. How is me saying the hitting lineup cant pitch a bad thing? Since your staff is struggling? You take everything to the heart. Dude we can do this. You stop commenting on me and when I make statement on the dodgers leave it alone.

I think Ohtani SB numbers are inflated and I think this pitch clock timer is the cause. I’m convinced this move to increase offense has created a weird ripple when it comes to SBs and I don’t like it. We are now going to have multiple 50sb players after year where we had a 40-70 player. It’s stupid and it happened so quickly after years where stolen bases stagnated.

The Pitch clock coupled with the two disengagements per AB has led to an increase in Stolen Bases. That said i don’t mind it. The Red Sox have their first set of teammates with 30+ steals in the same season since 1910

The stolen base was neutralized by analytics. Before the analytics era, 100 bag seasons were not uncommon. MLB did what they saw was necessary to bring back the running game. I’m not thrilled by the rule changes but I’m even less thrilled by the ways analytics changed the game in the first place.

And you’re aware that the two highest priced players –Ohtani & Yamamoto–were sought after by multiple teams who made similar offers, or do we have to go over all of that again slowly for you?

Unless the Braves pull off a miracle with all their injuries, there’s a realistic chance 4 teams from the NL West make the playoffs. And I’m not sure that’s happened since playoff expansion where a division had 4 teams in.

Hard to picture the Giants playing well enough down the stretch to beat both the Braves or the Mets to the punch. A long shot, but as you say, it’s possible. Even if it does I don’t suppose we will ever hear the end of the trash talking of the NLW.

Dodgers probably aren’t done yet. Chris Taylor is on a rehab assignment and is about a week away. If he’s back before the rosters expand there will have to be another DFA. It won’t be Kike’ and Kiermaier is getting more playing time than Heyward.
