Pirates Designate Domingo Germán For Assignment

By Darragh McDonald | September 5, 2024 at 5:25pm CDT

The Pirates announced that left-hander Joey Wentz, whom they claimed off waivers earlier this week, has been added to the active roster. Right-hander Domingo Germán has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move. Prior to the official announcement, Robert Murray of FanSided relayed on X that Germán would be designated for assignment. Earlier in the day, Kevin Gorman of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review was among those to relay on X that Wentz was in the clubhouse while Germán was leaving in street clothes.

Germán, 32, has spent most of this year with Triple-A Indianapolis. He signed a minor league deal with the Bucs in the offseason, opting out of that deal in July before quickly re-signing a fresh minor league pact. His results with that club were mediocre, as he made 13 starts with a 5.29 earned run average. He struck out 21.9% of batters faced and gave out walks at a 10.3% clip.

The Pirates selected him to the big league roster just under a month ago and have been using him in a swing role. He has made seven appearances, including two starts, with a 7.84 ERA, 18% strikeout rate and 13% walk rate. He started against the Cubs yesterday but allowed six earned runs in three innings, seemingly wearing out his welcome on the Pittsburgh roster.

Germán will be placed on waivers in the coming days. Since he has had to settle for minor league deals lately and didn’t get good results when given a chance, it seems fair to expect him to go unclaimed. He has more than enough service time to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, so he might be on the open market again shortly.

He has had some good results in his career, including pitching MLB’s 24th perfect game in June of last year, but has also has plenty of on-field and off-field issues. While with the Yankees, he was placed on administrative leave in September of 2019 and eventually received an 81-game domestic violence suspension. Last year, before that perfect game, he received a foreign substance suspension. He eventually finished the year on the restricted list while getting treatment for alcohol abuse, following a reported confrontation in which he argued with people in the Yankee clubhouse before flipping a couch.

While I don’t disagree with this decision, hitting coach Andy Haines should be designated, too.
3 times as the hitting coach, this team has been no hit and the overall offensive stats under his tenure have been exhaustingly horrible

Wentz at least has some decent movement on his pitches. German lost like two inches of horizontal break off of each of his pitches this year compared to last year.

Surprised he lasted as long as he did here.
Didn’t show much in AAA so don’t know why he was chosen ahead of others. Burrows has been only pitching 4 innings at a time but he may have been able to keep us in the game.

German shouldn’t be eligible for MLB. It continues to bother me that him, Ozuna, and Chapman’s domestic issues are not a barrier to them getting work. Domestic abusers, and women beaters in general, are lowest of the low.

no, Schilling revealed his hatred for those who don’t fit into his own skin color and do you know where the term “ woke “ originated ?
It’s related to desegregation and the civil rights movement

off topic but this is a question worth asking

Both position players who were acquired at the deadline this year by Cherington, IKF and De la Cruz have each been worse offensively with the Pirates than with their original teams
IKF was hitting .293 with Toronto, he’s hitting. .223 with the Pirates in 31 games and has only drawn 2 walks against 26 strikeouts
De La Cruz was batting 247 with the Marlins and is hitting .193 with the Pirates

Cherington said that he had always coveted these players, so my question is simple
Does he actually have sn eye for real talent or if he was right about these players, why do they suck so bad with the Pirates?

and Wentz’ first outing as a Pirate begs the question if he’s actually better than German

since joining the Indianapolis Indians at the deadline, Nick Yorke is batting .:360 with 15 doubles and an OPS of .931 yet worthless players like Alika Williams and McKinney are on the roster
Apparently Cherington doesn’t really know talent like he thinks

Too bad we can’t do a pool on who on the coaching staff and in the front office will be fired/not renewed and on what day it happens.. Not who you think should be gone, but who you think the Pirates will fire/ not renew. Could be more interesting than predicting free agent signings.

The entire coaching staff including the manager should have been fired after the 10 game losing streak or having an opposing pitching staff of one team throwing the 3rd no hitter under the leadership of the current regime
