Astros To Hire Tony Perezchica As Third Base Coach

By Anthony Franco | October 22, 2024 at 9:26am CDT

The Astros are hiring Tony Perezchica to serve as third base coach, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic. Perezchica has held the same role with the Diamondbacks for the last eight years. Piecoro notes that Perezchica had served as an infield instructor with Arizona and is expected to do the same in Houston while taking on an expanded role working with minor league infielders.

Perezchica, 58, briefly appeared in the majors between 1988-92. He has spent nearly three decades in the coaching ranks. The majority of that experience has come with the Diamondbacks. Perezchica took a managerial role with one of Arizona’s rookie ball affiliates back in 2003. He joined Torey Lovullo’s first coaching staff in the desert over the 2016-17 offseason.

The Astros decided not to renew the contract of previous third base coach Gary Pettis. Chandler Rome of the Athletic writes that the Astros don’t plan to go outside the organization for additional hires, though the staff hasn’t been finalized and it’s possible other teams express interest in hiring coaches away from Houston. If no one departs for a better opportunity, it seems the Astros will only make the one coaching change.

There’s more turnover in Phoenix. Arizona fired three pitching coaches (including former Astros staffer Brent Strom) a few weeks ago. They now have four vacancies to address.

Pretty sure Tony’s daughter just finished her softball career at University of Arizona perhaps providing less incentive to stay in Arizona.

His name is Alex Cintron. That is the coach that should be finding other opportunities.

I think the coaching staff with Houston remains. OUtside of this one change. Houston does not like to make changes. Not sure a lot on this guy. Not crazy on Espada myself even or Dana as GM.

Yes I do think we need better hitting coach. Cintron and Snitker both need to go but will not.

They love Houston. Whether anyone will look at either who knows. Miller I think is still here for Pitching coach. Although not sure who is out there in any fashion better. Houston likes status quo too much. Pettis perhaps age and other things moving on from him.

But even curious what Houston does during off season in terms of Outfield with Chas/Meyers. Tucker is safe for this upcoming season.

First/Third: If Bregman walks do they use Whitcomb at third and Dezenzo at first. How does Houston also replenish minors.
Myself neither is really great. Whitcomb and his play at third was not great. Also another spot mentioned is SS. Jeremy is not looking to be the answer. He was great his rookie season and has not been since.

I would love Kikuchi kept if could. But who knows.

I agree with most of that.
Some months ago I was all for letting Bregman walk, but I have reconsidered that position.
      I believe they should do the following;
      Sign Bregman
      Sign Kikuchi
      Sign Heyward
      Let Verlander walk
      Trade Tucker
      Trade Pena
      Trade Meyers
Use the above 3 trades to fill the gaping hole that is 1st base and add another outfielder who can actually hit.

My logic is that Tucker’s bat goes missing every post season and his outfield work, whilst solid, can be replaced.
Pena is useless at the plate and one of the worst fielding shortstops in the game. Ranks #5 in all of baseball for fielding errors. (All positions)
Meyers is also useless at the plate and despite his reputation, nothing that cannot be replaced in the outfield.

Wow, If someone told me yesterday the Astros are going to hire a 2024 Dbacks coach, I would have guessed Strom.

The nature of the field renders it unfeasible to carry out.
