The clock struck midnight on the Tigers’ Cinderella run in Game 5 of the American League Division Series when Guardians outfielder Lane Thomas swatted a backbreaking grand slam off likely American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, fueling what would eventually become a 7-3 Cleveland victory.
Detroit’s blazing finish to the regular season and spirited postseason run that saw them sweep the Astros in the Wild Card round of play raised expectations surrounding the club and left no doubt about their status as hopeful contenders heading into the offseason. President of baseball operations Scott Harris met with the Tigers’ beat today, discussing the team’s sensational second half and taking a look at the offseason to come (links via Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com and Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic).
Among the more prominent takeaways are that the Tigers will pursue a right-handed bat to augment a lineup that Harris believes became too left-handed, as well as additional support on the pitching side of things — both in the rotation and in the bullpen. Harris also downplayed the possibility of cutting ties with struggling veterans Javier Baez and Kenta Maeda. The third-year Detroit president suggested he expects Baez to be in spring training and added that he can see a role for him on the 2025 roster. He added that the Tigers “could have done a better job preparing” Maeda for the 2024 season and that there’s “absolutely” a place for him on the 2025 roster.
Tigers fans have already bristled at the idea of Baez and Maeda returning, although there’d be little point in Harris broadcasting that one or both will be cut loose at this time. Maeda, in particular, is only a year removed from a nice season. With just a year and $10MM remaining on his deal, he could potentially be swapped for another onerous veteran contract if such an opportunity presents itself. The Tigers won’t find a taker for Baez after he’s floundered throughout the first three years of his six-year contract in Detroit, but releasing the remaining $73MM left on that deal is likely more an ownership call anyhow.
Neither of the items atop Detroit’s offseason wishlist should come as a surprise. Detroit struggled against southpaws for much of the season, finishing in the bottom-third of the league in terms of overall production against left-handed opponents. As a collective unit, they slashed .229/.298/.362 versus lefties. The resulting 88 wRC+ indicates that Tigers hitters were 12% worse than league-average against southpaws.
Matt Vierling, Parker Meadows, Colt Keith, Spencer Torkelson, Andy Ibanez and Justyn-Henry Malloy were the only current Tigers with at least 50 plate appearances and better-than-average output against lefties. Each of Keith (27.3%), Meadows (32.3%) and Malloy (34.4%) found that success despite massive strikeout rates against lefties. Each posted a BABIP of .385 or better in those matchups. Some regression should be expected. Among Tigers expected regulars, all of Meadows, Keith, Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Trey Sweeney swing from the left side of the plate. That’s also true of top prospect Jace Jung, who’ll be in the mix for third base reps next year, depending on how the offseason shakes out.
The good news for Harris and the Tigers is that the upcoming class of free agent bats is far superior to last year’s crop. Among the notable right-handed bats on the market are Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso, Willy Adames, Teoscar Hernandez, Christian Walker, Tyler O’Neill and switch-hitters Anthony Santander and Jurickson Profar.
Broadly, Harris voiced confidence that ownership would afford him resources to be active in the market, though he also cautioned that he’s less concerned with pursuing payroll upgrades than he is talent upgrades; put another way, the trade market could well come into play as the club seeks upgrades in the lineup and on the pitching staff. Further, the Tigers’ baseball ops leader touted the flexibility that someone like Vierling gives him in looking to address the lineup. The versatile Vierling’s ability to handle both third base and any spot in the outfield means Harris can pursue upgrades at multiple positions. Hypothetically, Vierling could man the outfield in the event that the Tigers took a massive swing and signed Bregman to handle third base. Similarly, Vierling could take a significant portion of the workload at the hot corner if the Tigers instead wind up adding an outfielder like Hernandez, Santander or O’Neill.
On the pitching side of the coin, additions have seemed like a foregone conclusion. The Tigers utilized only one traditional starter during the playoffs — Skubal — and otherwise went with an all-hands-on-deck approach that manager A.J. Hinch termed “pitching chaos.” Bullpen games were the norm throughout September and into October, with relievers like Tyler Holton, Beau Brieske and Brenan Hanifee all getting into the act. While that made for an entertaining brand of baseball, it also puts a lot of strain on the staff as a whole and requires leaning heavily on a typically volatile group of pitchers (relievers) in terms of year-to-year performance.
Entering 2025, Skubal will be back to reprise his role atop the rotation. He’ll presumably be joined by Reese Olson and Casey Mize, with other rotation candidates including Maeda, Matt Manning, Keider Montero, Ty Madden, Brant Hurter and top prospect Jackson Jobe. Even though the club surely anticipates a huge role for Jobe in the very near future, there’s still room for upgrades while keeping those other arms involved. Hurter has shown plenty of aptitude for relief work during the “pitching chaos” experiment, and he has minor league options remaining — as do Hurter, Montero, Madden and Jobe. Manning will be out of options next season and will be in something of a make-or-break scenario next spring. Speculatively, he could also be someone who draws trade interest if/when Detroit adds to the rotation via free agency or trade.
As is the case with position players, the 2024-25 crop of free agents offers a relatively deep class of arms. Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell, Max Fried and old friend Jack Flaherty headline the pitching class, but there are other notable free agents including Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, Yusei Kikuchi and Nathan Eovaldi — to say nothing of older short-term vets who know a thing or two about pitching at Comerica Park (i.e. Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer).
From a pure payroll vantage point, there shouldn’t be much that’s off the table for Detroit. The Tigers have previously run player payroll up to the $200MM mark — albeit under the late Mike Ilitch’s ownership; his son, Chris, is now the team’s control person — and currently have only $38.5MM on the books in player salary next year. That comes in the form of a $25MM salary for Baez under his ill-fated six-year deal, a $10MM salary for Maeda and a $3.5MM salary for Keith.
Detroit’s arbitration class features 11 players and is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to cost $27.4MM, though a couple non-tender candidates in the group could cut that by a few million. Add in a slate of league-minimum salaries (or close to it) to round out the roster, and the Tigers are looking at about $75-78MM in player salary as things currently stand. That’s not to say fans should expect an all-out blitz in free agency and earnest pursuits of Juan Soto, Burnes and Bregman in conjunction with one another. At the same time, the team’s wide-open payroll outlook would make a legitimate run at Bregman or any other free agent possible.
That applies to potential extension talks as well. Asked specifically about Skubal, Harris instead spoke in generalities about his desire to avoid publicly commenting on individual players’ contract statuses (X link via Woodbery). “You saw what we did with Colt Keith,” said Harris. “We started discussions privately, came to an agreement, and announced it. I don’t think it’s constructive to comment on individuals, and it’s not fair to the players given the sensitivity of those talks.”
Beyond Skubal, there are a handful of logical extension candidates on the Tigers. Brieske and Vierling are reaching arbitration for the first time this winter, and the Tigers could look into modest deals to secure cost certainty and perhaps buy out a free agent year or two. Players like Carpenter, Meadows, Greene, Olson or even Jobe could all be targets as the front office looks to establish a core of long-term contributors in the Motor City. More broadly, Harris emphasized the importance of some of those young players taking the very same type of step that Skubal did in 2024.
“There are too many young players on this roster that can and must improve this offseason,” said Harris. “The gains that they access this offseason with the help of this coaching staff; when we add all those things up when we get to Lakeland in February, they have to outweigh anything we do via external additions. Because there is just too much opportunity on our roster.”

If we bring Baez back into this clubhouse I’m not sure I can take Harris seriously anymore.
Chicken In Philly?
Maybe it’s one last shot to see if this back injury gets Baez to say he can’t play anymore. Either way, it’s a lot of years to cut bait on. I know he’s an albatross, but one more spring training doesn’t mean he’s on the team.
Randog650
I agree on eating 3 years of that Baez contract is tough to swallow. Another reason Baez will be back is because Sweeney has little big league time. If Sweeney struggles badly in ST or gets injured Baez is the insurance. Sweeney’s arrival probably means Kriedler is no longer in their future plans.
stymeedone
No, Sweeney won’t be the reason Kreidler won’t be in future plans. Baez is the reason. That, plus his high rate of injury, and lack of production at the major league level. He never got a long look, and its unlikely he will even get the opportunity in spring training.
Randog650
If Kriedler is your future SS then you don’t include a SS in the Flarehty trade.
Stat_head
Kreidler had plenty of time to prove himself and he’s proven he’s an average defender that can’t hit. Baez as a platoon against lefties will work out better than Kreidler.
JrodFunk5
Kreidler isn’t anyone’s future anything
whammybenjammy
Hey now, that’s unfair to him. He could easily be my future realtor.
cooperhill
Think they would have learned their lesson after the Cabrera contract.
dkhits20
I’m pretty sure they’re waiting to see if he bounces back from the surgery because if he doesn’t, the more insurance money they collect. There’s little point in cutting him loose now.
gotigers68
I think it would be an Ilitch thing, not a Harris thing…..
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Teoscar Hernandez would make a lot of sense for them
I think Santander would be a better fit though since they don’t have many switch hitters
Tom the ray fan
Agreed I think they’ll sign one of those bats as well. Perfect fit for their lineup.
stymeedone
Keep in mind, Harris wants players that control the strike zone. Ask yourself if either of those two fit the requirement. Bregman is the fit, and plays the correct position of need. If they can’t get Bregman, I see a trade rather than a signing.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
If Mike illich was still around he would get bregman or Alonso, but Chris is a lot cheaper
Chris is probably traumatized at the idea of another Javier Baez situation
naldo482
can we quit the cheap CI talk. it just shows how little people know about infrastructure. CI has poured millions into the minor league upgrades and salaries for FO and additional staffs in the minors, player development, nutrition, kinesiology, etc. I am certain if Scott says his boss will support when needed, he will.
Stat_head
Bergman = Baez 2.0. Both had troublesome starts to the season and then miraculously recovered. If Houston isn’t interested in extending Bergman the Tigers should stay away and focus on developing Jung.
HatlessPete
I agree that corner outfield is the cleaner and more economical fit to add a right power bat, but the top names on the market have their varying pros and cons. Santander is a fringey defender and the idea of playing him out there at comerica should at least give pause to any idea of signing him. Hernandez isn’t that good either. O’neill has a better track record on defense but there you have to be concerned about injury risk and the impact of his injury history on projectability.
Acoss1331
I can see them make a run at Bregman if the asking price isn’t too high. Hinch would be amenable to having him if it’s on the table I would think. Just supposition on my part.

No one cares. He was fantastic in Detroit.
Stat_head
How much help was Rogers?? Oh right, he was so bad he was sent to the minors. Good thing you have him for another 2 years.
Diabetic Rockstar
No
Because Montero and/or Hurter wouldn’t have been called up, Sweeney wouldn’t have been at SS and we would have been looking at 40 games of Ryan Frckn Kreidler and his 1 hit every 15 at-bats, 1 strike out every other at-bat and 1 error every other inning
Oh…and Flaherty had an ERA over a run higher than the Tigers team did August thru October
For Love of the Game
Yes, but no one would have seen this coming! I also don’t know if the team would have taken such a loose and aggressive approach (letting the kids play) if they kept Flaherty.

The Tigers will figure it out. They turned a lot of heads showcased a whole lot of players, and they will look at all the data this off season. Perez, Malloy, and Keith held the fort all summer long, till the injured or the guys on the farm came back.
Meadows Carpenter Greene Vierling, all are impressive. I’d like to see a left handed bat for first, and if Tork could also play another position as well. I like this platoon stuff. They;ll sort it out, it was a fun second half of the season that is for sure.
stymeedone
Why not make Jung the platoon partner for Tork? As for Tork playing another position, how about he learn to play first better. The athleticism for any other position just isn’t there
MPrck
My first beef is with MLB and the baseballs. Long time fans have seen it all, it’s like now everyone can see fake news. Yes we went through the steroid era, but now it’s the baseballs. 2019’s juiced ball , and this years dead ball. They mention numerous times how production was way down, and balls now being hit a lot well over a hundred miles per hour just die. I like Jumg. and I like Madris too. for contact hitters and walking. The ball is the great unknown, and judging hitters like it is now is insane.
Motor City Beach Bum
Or Malloy. He looked great in the playoffs.
Stat_head
Carpenter can platoon with Tork. There are a couple solid RH platoon bats they can sign for RF without signing a boat anchor contract.
MPrck
Yes, I’d love to see Carp there or even Greene both would be like storming norman 2.0. Malloy looked alright in left, and he was on it in the playoffs at the plate. When you say were going to go after a right handed bat, they have someone specific in mind would be my guess, so we’ll wait and see it all unfold.
alcameron
Bring Adames back to the tigers organization, would rather him be the big signing over bregman. Then give a call to the cards about Contreras since they are looking to get rid of the contract. Could see Maeda going that way and they’d hope he’d be decent so they can flip him at the deadline for some prospects. Love Rogers and he had some big hits in playoffs but could use Contreras bat. Still can have Rogers catch skub and 2-3 games a week.
Can’t see them signing Flathery and extending skubal but would love to be wrong on that.
dkhits20
I don’t see us taking over the Contreras contract. I believe we will spend money this offseason but not $18MM/yr on a position that’s not high-priority for us. I think Dingler is going to get a longer look so we can see what we have in him first before trading for a catcher. We also have Liranzo, a catcher at the moment, coming within the next couple years.
tigerdoc616
Neither are happening. Adames defense has been lagging the past few years and really went down this year. He isn’t a SS long term (addressed that in Mark P’s chat last night) and we have plenty of 2B’s on this team. IF the Tigers signed him it would be for 3B. Then might as well go after Bregman then. Better hitter and better 3B.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
Contreras in Detroit would be like a knock off ivan Rodriguez
naldo482
The amazing success of pitching choas is due in large part to how well Jake and to a lesser degree, Dillion call these games. they seldom get shook off which validates how good their game calling and preparation is.
84LeFlore
I’m not ready to give up on him, but the Tigers need to find at least a platoon mate for Tork, even if it’s just part time platooning against RHers he struggles against.
I’d like them to give spring training 1B reps to Greene (for health), Carp (because he’s L/L) and Colt (because that’s probably where his future is) to see if any of them can play 1B. There’d be less mounting pressure on Tork if he didn’t have to face the tougher RHers.
Tork is a delicate subject because of the chemistry factor: he’s buddies w/several of the core and is BFF of the Franchise. (That’s Riley if you don’t know.) Shipping Tork out (while keeping, say, Baez) could rip the chemistry apart. Some may say chemistry doesn’t matter, but how often did we hear about that being the key to the Tigers’ crazy 2024 run?
Meanwhile, 3B is a huge question mark. Jung doesn’t look ready. Matty-V is probably the best in-house option, but he’s also RH-hitting OF depth.
At SS we will now have Sweeney, Baez & Z-Mac. Will they keep Baez and Sweeney to split SS duties and dump Z-Mac?
Big decisions ahead.
Samuel
84LeFlore;
Chemistry matters!
The O’s FO messed with it this year and that was the biggest reason they were disappointing.
Otto371
I dont know why but Bregman feels like a perfect Tiger.
Randog650
I don’t see the Tigers signing him. It blocks Jung. Yeah, they could move Jung to second and Keith to first but Carpenter is going to take more DH at bats than anyone on the team. Moving Tork to DH takes a lot of at bats away from the only lefty power bat they have in Carpenter.
funkytime
Tork would never block Carpenter from getting at-bats vs RHPs. He’s an infinitely better hitter (the best on the team vs one of the worst) and can play the outfield too. Even if Tork took a giant step forward he’s still not taking away at bats from Carpenter.
Neither Jung nor Tork are a sure thing long term starter, so having them battle it out for mostly one position because the Tigers have a better everyday 3rd baseman would be a major upgrade for the team. And they desperately need an offensive upgrade.
Randog650
I get what you are saying but the point I’m making is that they are not moving Tork to a platoon DH position. Not this off-season anyhow. The reason they are keeping Baez is you have a rookie at SS/3B. If they struggle in ST or get injured Baez plays there. The tigers don’t need to sign a Soto, Verlander, Scherzer or Bregmann and I doubt they will. I can see a decent mid rotation starter, a reliever or two and a RH OF who can play either corner. All on one or two year contracts at most.
stymeedone
Why does everyone want to play Carpenter at DH? He has a decent arm and does not seem to be a liability in the OF. While he probably isn’t one of the Tigers 3 best defensive OFs, his bat makes him one of their 3 best OFs, more than making up for any loss in defense. If the Phillies can play Castellanos, and occasionally Schwarber, in their OF, and make the playoffs, Carpenter shouldn’t cause a problem. Malloy may need more of an opportunity to earn playing time after his post season, and is much worse defensively than any other OF on the team. Save DH for him.
Randog650
I didn’t say that I, or anyone else for that matter, want Carpenter to be the full time DH.
Diabetic Rockstar
I think LAST YEAR was the “don’t block prospects with free agents” year. They got a good long look at a lot of kids. Harris even said it in is presser that the young guys will have to earn their spot in ST over external additions, which is exact opposite of what he said last year when he said they wanted to keep spots open for the youth
chemfinancing
I think they would love to bring back Flaherty but he is staying in LA mark my words
stymeedone
The only way Flaherty stays in LA is if they offer the most money (True of almost every FA).

The reason I typed that is b/c he is from the area. You may be right though a team like SD or LAA could give him the highest offer but I guarantee it ain’t DET wit the best manager in baseball AJ Hinch for all I know Flaherty is a cocaine addict

Adames. Santander. One or both. Bring back Flaherty. Avoid Bregman, Alonso, and Teoscar like the plague. DFA Baez. Keep Tork without a platoon partner for one more year – show confidence in him, and have a little faith…

I think Pivetta and/or Lynn end up in Detroit for 2025.
tigerdoc616
Not so sure about Lynn, he is a bit long in the tooth but certainly could see Pivetta as a below the radar signing. He would fit what they have done with Lorenzen and Flaherty the past two seasons.
dkhits20
I wouldn’t mind Pivetta, but if we ARE going to sign someone over age 37, I’d rather it be Scherzer or Verlander instead of Lynn.
moteus
I really do wish they’d bring JV back.
Probably just the masochist in me, ya know?
tigerdoc616
I listened to the entire press conference. Harris made it very clear the success of this club was due to its young core and that the focus going forward was still building a contender by developing their young core. Sure he is going to add, almost every team does every year. Sure he said pitching and a RHH, but never said what end of the market So I find it humorous that in breaking this down Steve you mention some of the biggest names not named Soto (and you even mentioned him) on the market. Tigers are still a bottom third team in revenue and do not have their local TV deal for next year yet. Harris said he would have the money to sign the talent he wants and thinks he needs. But honestly I don’t think he wants the top end talent. He wants the flexibility that comes with finding pitchers he can hand to Fetter and Lund and rehab their career. He wants the flexibility of shorter term contracts so no player becomes an anchor weighing the team down. So not likely going after Snell, Fried, Flaherty, Burnes, or Manaea. Maybe Severino, Kukuchi or maybe a guy like Montas. Not going to be Alonzo, Bregman and probably not Hernandez or Santander. Outside shot it’ll be Walker or O’Neill. I would say Profar but I can’t see him leaving SD.
I did find Harris’s comments on Maeda interesting, stating they failed to adequately prepare him for this season. Most press conferences like this are short on specifics and intentionally vague, but that was a surprising and specific admission. That tells me that Maeda isn’t going anywhere at least for now. He was also quite specific in his thought on Baez’s injury being a big factor in his poor performance and some optimism that he could rebound at least some this season. Also suggests he isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
dkhits20
Re: “failed to adequately prepare him for this season”… yeah I don’t even know what that means. He’s been pitching professionally since 2008 and has played in the USA now for over 8 years. At some point, he learned how to prepare for a season. He was also coming off a decent 2023 season when we signed him and healthy. He showed flashes of great pitching in 2024 but in most games, he just didn’t have it. I’m not sure what more we could have done.
TroyVan
I’ll tell you what I think it means based on some comments I’ve heard this season.
That was Harris sending a message to Maeda, who allegedly is infamous for not preparing for a season like he should. If you’re Maeda and you hear that, you have to think you’ve got to be better prepared. Very nice, subtle way of doing it. Take the blame for the problem we know exists.
Samuel
–“….“failed to adequately prepare him for this season”–
dkhits20;
This is a trend in pro sports as FO’s, and staffs kiss players behinds. Saw a few NFL coaches say recently that they “have to coach better”.
This too will pass.
Samuel
tigerdoc616;
Great comments.
I skimmed over the article. Adams tends to use boilerplate logic looking at teams and then trying to them to the juicy available name players. Reality is what you wrote: The Tigers are clearly on the uptrend. They have at least a dozen young players that at this point look like they have room to grow. Factor in the chemistry on the team, and realize that it doesn’t need anything major at this time…..just a few pieces that complement what they have. (The story that the bullpen often meets each morning for breakfast as a unit is a positive. Don’t break things like that up…..as the O’s did early this year.)
The Tigers don’t need leaders, they already have some. They could use a veteran or two that could help keep the ship steady during inevitable downturns. Like just about everyone else I believe that bringing Baez (and his attitude) back into that clubhouse is as bad a mistake as signing him to supposedly be a role model for the young players coming up was. Harris didn’t make that signing, My guess is that Harris is probably talking to ownership about paying a part of that salary and maybe even adding an expendable player in a package to get another team to take Baez. Unfortunately, at this point I can’t think of anyone that desperate / crazy.
cooperhill
Injury a big factor? LMAO, sucked since he’s been here.
Motown is My Town
The reality is that Marian Illitch will not let Chris spend any money so that RH bat Harrris is referring to is Baez in the hopes his hip surgery fixed his swing. On the offensive side of the equation Harris & Hinch will continue with working the “developmental angle” under the guise we’re still lot sure what we have with the kids so we’re giving them another year. The kids showed a ton of promise this year and exceeded expectations so if they all show improvement in 2025 the strategy may pay off.
On the pitching side I’d expect the Tigers signing a veteran starter and (Flaherty/Verlander) and a few relievers..
Future looks bright but don’t expect any bank breaking investments this offseason as you’ll be disappointed
Motor City Beach Bum
Verlander or Buehler for SP. Devin Williams for the pen. Kim to split SS with Sweeney and move around. I think Malloy has earned a look for more at bats and I saw someone mention getting him a 1B glove which might be a good idea. Internal improvements might be where most of the offensive improvements come from.
Where does the big bat fit? Contreras at catcher = no Dingler. Adames = no Sweeney. Alonso or Walker at 1B = no Tork. Bregman = no Jung. Hernandez or Santander = no Malloy.
Who gets blocked or moved?
TroyVan
I don’t think Sweeney is the long term answer at short. I don’t even consider him better than Zach Short. Not much of an arm either.

Tork? LMFAO!
windmill_noise_causes_cancer
Tork can move, he blows.
HatlessPete
It’s very unlikely that all of the young players you mention will stay healthy and build on 2024 enough to establish themselves as everyday starters. These kinds of roster questions have a way of sorting themselves out. Look at the reds this season to see how quickly an expected strength and abundance of depth can turn into an area of concern for a club. The tigers have a bunch of interesting young players with option, which means they have flexibility and adding a veteran piece or two means they have an opportunity to strengthen the team and bolster their depth. Roster depth is very important to making a serious run at contention.
Samuel
HatlessPete;
A lot has to do with the manager and his coaches.
Francona would never have take the Reds job unless
he believed he could win with those young players.
David Bell has been a poor manager for years. A.J
is not a poor manager, and his coaches appear to
be quite competent.
Motor City Beach Bum
I agree with you Hatless Pete. The big question for me is which young players will take a back seat to allow for any full time veteran additions. Some make more sense than others or maybe they just fill in around the edges like they tried to do this year.
kylek58
The one name I haven’t seen anyone talk about is Bligh Madris, he performed adequately at first when Tork was in AAA, giving him at bats in a platoon would allow the Tigers to focus finances on other areas of the roster. Bregman just makes too much sense to reunite with Hinch, and he fits the mold that Harris likes for hitters in controlling the strike zone.
dkhits20
Bligh is a nice depth piece to keep in AAA, but not the type of player you want playing 1B for a playoff team.
cooperhill
Tork belongs in AAA!
Red Wings
Rotation of Skubal, Olson, Jobe, Montero – need one more starter. Not sure Mize has a future with the Tigers, something is off there, like going to arbitration over $20k, put on IL, left off postseason roster. Please cut Baez, don’t need his attitude affecting young players. Not sure Tork has figured anything out, get ready for a signing, or move Keith to first and Kim to second.
stymeedone
Why would they move Keith to 1B? His arm is healthy. He played a fine 2B, and his bat would look must worse at 1B. They signed him long term. He’s their 2B going forward.
Red Wings
His bat will get better and Kim has played well at Toledo. Easy swap if Tork can’t learn to hit a fastball.
84LeFlore
Colt has limited range at 2B, plus McGonigle is not far away and won’t stick at SS.
If Colt sticks at 2B, I hope he really works on his defense.
cooperhill
Mize, another 1st round bust!
Motown is My Town
But they drafted Skubal in the 9th round that same year, so call it a wash as how many 9th rounders win a Cy Young?
84LeFlore
I’m not ready to give up on Mize – or Faedo. They’re talented — enough to be Friday night starters in the SEC. Serious injuries have slowed their ascents, esp. Mize. Let’s see how he’s throwing by spring.
Red Wings
If their big expenditure ends up being signing one true quality starter like Flaherty and cutting Baez, it’s a good off season.
moteus
Just cutting ties with Baez would work for me!!
warnbeeb
I will be stunned if they sign any of Adames, Bregman, Alonzo, Verlander, Buehler, Devin Williams, Flaherty, Hernandez, Contreras….let alone Soto.
Tigers have a lot of prospect currency. I’m thinking Harris might pull off a Dombrowski trade or two out of the blue thing this winter. I don’t see a blockbuster free agency signing.
TroyVan
I see a solid 1B/DH type of platoon with Tork coming. I think Tork’s days are numbered. He’s a guy that, given his age and college experience, should be leaps and bounds ahead of where he is at now. At some point soon, players like that will get squeezed. Too much talent on the roster and coming up to waste ABs on.

I see Bregman as the only player they might break the bank for. I could also see interest in Arronado, depending on him waiving his no trade, and how much contract St.Louis might eat.

They just don’t want to swallow the Baez contract. Time to give up on that bust Torkelson.

cooperhill;
Spencer Torkelson is to Tiger fans what Henry Davis is to Pirates fans:
The first overall draft choice one year that clearly was a mistake. The teams FO’s recognize that and through excessive coaching are trying to fit them in as some sort of role players. It’s not working. Fans are getting more upset and the players feel the pressure.
Would be best for both teams to cut bait and let the players go to another organization for a fresh start. Doubt either one will become a star, but it’s possible they can become serviceable role players. They deserve the opportunity. They didn’t draft themselves that high.

Harris didn’t draft Torkelson or sign Baez as a FA. Those are 2 of the last big messes he inherited that he has to clean up. The future is so bright that Tigers fans need to wear sunglasses inside in the dead of winter.

This team had a magical run to make the playoffs in spite of Harris and Illitch. These kids have so much potential, but there’s a lot of holes in this roster too. They need at least 2 solid starters
TigerTimes
Would love to see Goldschmidt on a one year deal to challenge Tork and mentor him a bit.

Baez, when healthy can fill the super utility role. Sure, that’s an expensive guy to put on the bench, but he fills a need. Solid defense at SS/2B/3B and he can run. Maybe he hits again… who knows.
Try and get Bregman. A solid defensive 3B who hits right handed. Doesn’t strike out much. He has some power and a decent OBP. He’s equally good against lefties and righties.
I would then try and get a couple starters… Flaherty and Manea would be great. I think the pen can work itself out. I trust Fetter. If Flaherty wants to stay in LA, I would then try and get Verlander. He’s not the ace he was, but I think he could be a solid number 4.
OF Greene, Meadows and Perez
DH Carpenter
INF Tork, Greene, Sweeney and Bregman
C Rogers and Feduccia (Trade w/ Dodger) Maybe Manning?
Bench Baez, Ibanez and Vierling
If Tork doesn’t improve, then Vlad Jr is a free agent after 2025.

I like your thought process. You meant Keith instead of Greene for IF. I’d like Bregman too…good defense and offense. Baez needs to go unless he totally turns things around. Go get Kim and give him at bats between SS, 2B and 3B instead. He’s hurt but will be back this season. Good call on the pitching side.
Melchez17
Yes, I meant Keith. My brain fart.

Wish list FA’s (preferably no more than 2yr):
Kikuchi
Santander
Legit closer (facing Classe showed me how much pressure it puts on a team that’s behind in the 6th and 7th innings)
Wish list of players to keep:
McKinstry (thanks to last 2 months)
Veiling
Vest
Brieske
Players who I could live w/o:
Lange
Mize
Manning
Torkelson (he has lost his pitch recognition, swings out of zone and takes or swings at pitches in zone, wants to hit HR every AB- its mental with him- he needs some type of therapy)
Players who need to go:
Baez (like Weird AL says- just eat it)
Maeda (aging vet with no role)
Players who need to improve:
Carpenter (we need him to get better at hitting lefties so he can get more AB’s)
Everybody else
I’m all for improving the team through trades or FA signings as long as we don’t dont go overboard with 5 or more year contracts on multiple players- the Dombrowski years were alot of fun, but alot of heartbreak. Best line up, best rotation- no bullpen- still frustrating. All those stars, all that money, just gave us flags. We need homegrown talent with a mix of stars. Sustainability to where we can compete every year. I want a championship and I realize those Dom teams gave us home field advantage- I just don’t want to sign all these star players and risk them underperformed or getting hurt and us being stuck again and eventually tearing it back down.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Stinks.
They should have hired me in the first place…..
They obviously have little clue in comparison with the Superfife!
Never should have pitched to that dude.
3 times he did it.
No one ever listens to the Superfife……
Fkrs….
I give up.
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Baez back in the clubhouse. Jinxed it.
We lose.
He would have never been let near if the Superfife was in board……
No baeball accumen in Detroit.
It’s Chris Illich’s fault for not hiring the Superfife in the first place…..
The Saber-toothed Superfife
Could Chris Illich look Hinch in the eye and ask, “What do you know about Javier Baez’s injury?”.
Party on, “dudes”….
The Saber-toothed Superfife
They should just hire the Superfife.
