The non-tender deadline is tomorrow evening. Teams need to decide whether they want to offer contracts to their arbitration-eligible (and pre-arbitration) players. Those who are not tendered contracts are sent directly into free agency without exposing them to waivers.
As is the case each winter, MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz has projected salaries for the arbitration class. Teams have already made a few cuts among that group — either at the beginning of the offseason when players returned from the injured list or prior to Tuesday’s deadline to keep prospects out of the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs, for instance, have already taken Adbert Alzolay and Patrick Wisdom off the 40-man roster and could officially non-tender them tomorrow.
Not everyone who is tendered a contract will know their salary this week. Some players will sign “pre-tender” deals that lock in guaranteed money. Many of them are borderline non-tender candidates who will take salaries below their projection to ensure they stay on the roster at all. (Scott Kingery and Seth Brown have already signed deals of that ilk.) Those who don’t sign but are tendered a contract could have a few months of uncertainty. They’re free to continue negotiating with their clubs to find a mutually agreeable salary until the date of their arbitration hearing.
As we do each offseason, we’ll take a look at arb-eligible players we believe have a realistic shot at being let go. To be clear, this is not a list of players we think are likelier than not to be non-tendered. These are players we consider to have at least a 10-20% chance of being cut — a broad group who wouldn’t strike us as completely surprising.
At least a few of these players will likely be traded, as some teams will have more willingness than others to accommodate various projected salaries. MLBTR covered a few candidates for that kind of deal in a post for Front Office subscribers yesterday.

Fine work by Brian Cashman there…look at those non-tenders he paid for with prospect talent! (I know, a little snide, but….)
Joe says...
Which means they’ll keep all of them so Cashman doesn’t have to admit he screwed up.
Yankee Clipper
Did you guys see Hal’s comments about expecting an extension for Boone? Unreal. An extension would provide him with a tenure as long as four-time dynastic manager, Joe Torre, if not longer tenure.
Joe says...
I was blissfully unaware of that Clip. Rats!!
YourDreamGM
He got them to the world series. Handled a lot of really expensive players. Had to deal with Gylber Jazz. Most importantly it’s just a manager. Doesn’t really matter in today’s game.
If anything get rid of Cashman or ownership for giving out awful contracts. I’m all for a mega market spending money. They are funding the smaller markets. Just spend it a lil bit more intelligently. They should easily make the playoffs every year and win multiple world series each decade. It can’t be like 90s 2000s because other teams can spend big money now as well but it can be better than it’s been.
Unclemike1526
They forgot a bunch of Cubs. Hollowell, Mervis, Tauchman, Mastrobuoni they’d be on my list with Madrigal and not Merryweather.
Scott Costello
The Yankees got him to the world series, not the other way around. He, time and time again, tried to NOT get them to the world series. His bullpen decisions alone were laughable.
I get that before each game he gets together with the brass to make a plan for how they are going to manage the game. But you have to have a feel for the moment and not just blindly obey the pre game plan.
Sure the historical numbers say a pitcher does well against a batter. But what if the pitcher hasn’t pitched in 45 days and this is his first outing? Maybe don’t throw him into a game with bases loaded against 2 of the best hitters in the game!
Yossi Ronnen
Cashman took the Yankees to the WS with 2.5 useful hitters in the lineup, one semi-reliable starter, and a closer that lost his job through out the season.
As a non Yankees fan, I’m jealous.
MeowMeow
It’s always been a bit surprising to me that Yankees fans often seem to be so down on Cashman. As a Red Sox fan I’ve consistently been irked and frustrated over the years at how many of his acquisitions and moves have seemed to work out well for the Yankees. I still haven’t gotten over how he somehow performed necromancy on Raul Ibanez in 2012.
YourDreamGM
You mean Boone. It’s Cashman who is responsible for only giving him 2.5 hitters.
I didn’t watch enough Yankees to know about the bullpen usage. But I watched games in stands, bars, with friends or been in game threads and most people complain about reliever usage no matter the team. They don’t consider matchups. And the 10 percent do only think of lefty righty. Don’t bother to research reverse splits. Won’t even think about individual pitch splits. They don’t consider usage and even if they do they didn’t talk with the pitchers to know their health for that day. So maybe you are in the 1 or 2 percent of fans who could evaluate a manager decent enough. I follow a team with a truly awful manager Derek Shelton. Like so awful that in the bottom of 10th 11th inning in a tied game he doesn’t know to walk the hitter to set up a double play bad. His bullpen decision might cost 2 or 3 games a season. With so much analytics there isn’t too much a manager can f up.

How did a career 1 win player like Andrew Vaughn get “projected” to make $6M+? I imagine the Wsox will offer him substantially less or perhaps non tender him.
wagner13
Because, sensible or not, arbitration salaries are based on counting stats; not WAR
mlb fan
“Counting stats not War”…If this guy had any real “counting stats” we wouldn’t be reading about him in a story about “non tender” candidates.
I think it more shows that if you can remain on a Major League roster, that you’ll accrue substantial raises despite a lack of overall production.
wagner13
That’s what I’m saying. His cumulative batting stats (home runs, RBIs, etc.), which don’t necessarily align with quality of performance, have driven up his arbitration salary.
I didn’t say anything about him “deserving” the salary, I’m just offering an explanation
metsin4
What do you think they base WAR off of? The counting stats.
geofft
No, not entirely. First, WAR includes defense, which is not a counting stat. Offensively slash numbers affect the WAR. Those are not counting stats, they are averages that can go up or down.
metsin4
And the slash lines are a math equation from the counting stats. Everything is a math equation off of a counting stat.
wagner13
Yes, but those stats are weighted differently when calculating WAR versus determining arbitration salaries. There’s no conspiracy here
geofft
That is a categorically inaccurate statement. Counting stats go up every time you do something. Slash numbers can go up OR down based on the percentage of times a player accomplishes a “counting” action. and do not merely count upwards.
If someone goes 1-for-5 with a single that drives in a run, his counting stats – hits, total bases, RBI – go up. But his average, OBP, slugging pct (and by extension, OPS) will all go down.
Ketch
Also and more importantly they are based on previous salary
Blackpink in the area
His WAR is bad because he’s a bad defender which arbitration really doesn’t take into account. He still has that top draft pick pedigree. Decent chance he’s a bust but I think they offer him a contract. Gavin Sheets I think has a better chance at getting non tendered. We will see.
JScottG
The way the Sox work is different.
As a life long 50+yr South Sider, I’ll explain it. I’d absolutely guarantee they will NEVER admit that Vaughn has been a top 5 pick BUST! By non tendering they’d be admitting it.
Yes they care more about an image of knowing what they’re doing as opposed to actually operating like a top franchise.

Ignorant Son-of-a-b
DreamGM: Could you pick a 25-man roster among any of these non-tender candidates and field any better than a .500 team?
YourDreamGM
@Ignorant I wouldn’t even get close to 500. You win with pitching and power. Studs aircraft carriers as old school guys say.
I would do well enough in a 1 game playoff though. There is one heck of a potential bullpen out of these potential non tenders. I promise you not all of these relievers will be non tender.
braves25
Please explain how this is fair?
If the Pirates want Bobby Witt Jr, the only thing that would get the Royals attention would be Paul Skenes. The Royals are trying to win
slund24
I highly doubt even Skenes gets their attention for Witt Jr. He’d have to be included obviously but would take much more than just him.
YourDreamGM
You keep Witt unless Skenes has more years. Witt is do doubt opting out unless severe injury but that opt is probably around same time Skenes is free agent. Not looking it up. If all things are equal you go with the position player star who is there for fans to see everyday vs 1 time a week. So a trade just couldn’t be equal. The Pirates would need to give more value and significantly more. Fans are already attached to Witt so they would need to see that it was such a over pay the Royals couldn’t say no. Why would Pirates make their team and farm system worse? Trade couldn’t happen unless Bob Nutting had a child whos favorite player was Witt and he did whatever it took to make his child happy.
sad tormented neglected mariners fan
The pirates are overpaying… 2 players is worth more than one because 1+1=2 and 1+0=1
Take out de la Cruz and the trade is fair and balanced for both sides
kellin
Zero chance the Angels don’t tender contracts to Moniak and Suarez. I wish they wouldn’t, in regard to Suarez, but we all know the Angels have a weird relationship with that dude.
Dustin May is probably borderline. I was thinking he’s got some good upside still for the price, but maybe the Dodgers won’t risk it since he’s been so injury prone.
Canning is a no-brainer non-tender.. I can’t really imagine the Braves giving him 5 million.
HHBruin
no chance Dustin May is non-tendered. if the Dodgers were concerned so much about injury, they could just make him a reliever.
Ketch
They might non-tender him and re-sign him for less.
VegasMoved
I mean, his most recent injury was pretty much the definition of a freak injury. I don’t think there’s much risk he’ll miss any more time due to an esophageal injury.
stymeedone
What if the Dodgers have a future choke in them? That would be life threatening to May!
shortstop
I could be missing something but I don’t see why the Braves would non-tender Canning after they just traded for him in a 1 for 1 swap.
kellin
@shortstop Salary dump.
ThatsIT?
Wasn’t it more about getting rid of soler salary?
Pat Rockett
That and the fact that they don’t have a place for him on the roster. He’s really not playable in the outfield any more, and they picked up Marcell Ozuna’s option, so DH is spoken for.
Ketch
They’ll try to reach an agreement with Canning for less than $5mill if they want him.
Pat Rockett
I’m actually questioning that $5M projection. He made $2.6M in 20234 and he had a pretty crummy year, He was essentially replacement level, finishing with a 5.19 ERA, 5.26 FIP and 0.2 fWAR in 171 innings. I know how arbitration works, but I still have a hard time seeing an arbitrator double that salary based on those numbers. If the Braves can get him to sign for $3M, he’s worth giving a shot.
HHBruin
where is Luis Arraez?

Non tender a multiple time batting champ?
Digdugler
Romano is an interesting one…Tate and Pop can be easily cut and Swanson easy pick up (because of hope)
NoSaint
@Digdugler
I think there’s a possibility they tender both (roughly 3M for the pair). A lot is dependant on the quality of other relievers that are non-tendered. The Jays BP is a mess and there isn’t a lot on the farm. Tate and Pop are known commodities in the organization. If/when th FO rebuilds the pen they can be DFA’ed costing one sixth the cost of the contracts (about 500K for the pair)
HalosHeavenJJ
Romano is interesting but I’d tender him a contract and bet on a rebound.
If he’s cut loose he’ll have plenty of suitors willing to take that gamble, albeit at a reduced cost.
NoSaint
@HalosHeavenJJ
Agreed. If Romano comes close to his non-24 season he is easily worth the 8M estimated value.
mlb1225
I don’t see the Marlins NT-ing Jesus Sanchez. He was pretty decent down the stretch, was in the 80th percentile or higher of xwOBA, xSLG%, and barrel rate, is only 27, and is projected to make $3.2 million. Definitley could get something better in a trade than saving $3-$4 million by letting him go.
Ann Porkins
I really hope the Giants aren’t seriously considering cutting Doval. They have the cash to take a $5M gamble on an arm of his talent, and the upside is getting back an All Star reliever.
If the Giants want to contend in 2025, it makes sense to keep him around and see if he can boost a solid bullpen; If the Giants don’t want to contend in 2025, it makes sense to keep him around and trade him for a nice haul if he rebounds.
VegasMoved
If they really wanted to unload his salary they could trade him. Someone would buy that $5 million lottery ticket. No chance he’s cut loose.
Brick House Coffee Tables Inc
I think they’d be able to trade Doval instead of non-tendering him.
luvochka
Definitely trade bait, Randy Rodriguez is basically the same pitcher they have no pressing need for a power right hand reliever.
bubba3b
doval is playing winter ball right now and is sporting a 5.68 era. so, looks like the giants f.o. might be looking to cut bait. just curious if it’s doval’s health, mechanics, “intangibles” (attitude us fans don’t see on a day-to-day basis) or a combination of those three that led to his bad year.
a bit sad to see yaz go. solid defender and good stick. was also reported he even offered a pay cut for a two-year contract to stay. where he ends up, they’re getting a solid, all-around teammate. thanks yaz.
seamaholic 2
4th OF, and he’s getting older. Lots and lots of those types around.
Pat Rockett
If Yaz could play center field more, things might be different. A corner OF who is a league average hitter has some value, but probably not $9M.
Jswag
Eric Haase is a bargain under two million and will be the backup to Contreras in Milwaukee.
0523me
Haase needs a more extended look somehow, maybe some DH, LF or 1st, but try that bat in a lineup with regular work and see what happens
RonDarlingShouldntBeInTheHallOfFame
I could see the Padres getting involved depending what happens with Higgy. Feels like it’s time to trade Campusano, and I could see them rolling with something like Higgy, Haase, and Sullivan and getting Haase AB’s at C/DH/LF
AlBundysFanClubPresident
Maybe, but if the Crew can find an even cheaper option, they’ll do it.
cookmeister 2
I would add Patrick Sandoval to the list potentially. Due around $5 mil iirc, isn’t going to pitch this season, only 1 year remaining after
VegasMoved
I think it’s a bit generous to assume there’s “at least a 10%” chance the Dodgers reduce their starting pitching depth in order to save $2.1 million. Dustin May will be tendered for sure.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
I’m a little surprised that Miles Mastrobuoni isn’t on the list of Non-tender candidates. Unless the cubs already let him go.

Hope the Mets tender Blackburn, he showed enough before being injured and should compete for the 4 or 5 apot
Bill M
$4.4M seems a bit high
Attystephenadams
They may non tender him and then turn around and sign him for half the expected arbitration amount.
stymeedone
$4.4MM for a starting pitcher is a bit much? Lynn and Gibson set the bar last year at $12MM. Blackburn looks like a bargain if healthy.
geofft
Spotrac projects him at $6m. And it might be a lot if the guy only pitches half the time, and struggles half the time he does pitch.
geofft
@ Atty That’s the most likely scenario given the Mets need for starters right now, and Blackburn’s injury status. Both sides are compromised and need each other, but the team has more options, while the player is kind of stuck with whatever he can get. Half of $4.4m is a lot better than waiting all winter for a minor league deal.
geofft
He showed to be a completely erratic BOTR. His good games were very good, and his bad was were horrific – the kind of bad that strains the bullpen. He missed a lot of games with back issues. He had a surgery that will keep him away from baseball activities until at least January, so he will likely be behind come spring training and might not be ready for the start of the season. And then we have no idea whether or not he can stay healthy. And he does not have any minor league options remaining. So if they tender him, then DFA him at some point in the season, they’re on the hook for that money.
I’m not saying they don’t or shouldn’t tender him. Just saying that its a plausible call either way.
Pat Rockett
Blackburn’s a fun pitcher to watch because he’s a throwback soft-tosser. He can be very effective against aggressive hitter lineups (e.g., the Braves). But for a soft-tosser, he sure is injured a lot.

Why in the world would the O’s non-tender Wells while he works his way through UCL surgery & recovery when he is only projected to end up with an arbitration salary of a couple million? Whether he’s in the bullpen or the rotation the team can surely find a place where he’s effective and a bargain at that price. If they non-tendered Wells his agent would have a dozen teams calling him before dinner tonight trying to get Wells to join them even with his expected return being halfway through 2025..

He’s not very good to begin with and hasn’t pitched in a long time. Cheap depth but could just be a waste of money for a team that needs to really devote resources to pitching to get over the hump.

I’d like to see the Yankees bring in vaughn and Brendan Rogers. Consistent, yet unspectacular playsers. Vaughnwill give you 20hr and 70 RBI can play 1B/OF. Rogers can play all over the IF and hit around 260 with occasional power. Maybe they can start maybe they’re utility

I see Quantrill as a probable non-tender. I wonder if Cleveland will try to lure him back.

Not for 9 million. This according to trade rumors arbitration figures for quantrill.

The only way Josh Rojas gets non-tendered is if he breaks his leg or something. He most likely starts at either 3rd or 2nd. The Mariners might upgrade one of those spots this off-season, but not both.

Dodgers have one candidate not listed: Logue, No way he males it through the winter on the 40-man. Next up if they need a spot is Grove.

I see the Astros are keeping Chas and Meyers who both stink like crazy. 4 years or so with team and each year get to late spring/early summer and start saying we have no one to play LF/CF
Tucker it may be his last season. Chas stunk last season. Year before was ok but not hitting cover off ball consistently. Defense even last season.
Meyers that is all he is like a closer guy for CF at end of game for D purposes. If they do keep Bregman that will be their only big move.
Want to keep the same broken down team. Really waiting to see if Bregman gets better or he stinks even worse if they give him a hot deal.
But if him, Soto, Walker, Alonso any of these sign during Winter meetings, who knows.
