Phillies Promote Preston Mattingly To General Manager

By Darragh McDonald | November 8, 2024 at 2:40pm CDT

The Phillies announced today that vice president and general manager Sam Fuld is pursuing his MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He is slated to graduate in May of 2026, at which point he will take the title of president of business operations. Assistant general manager Preston Mattingly has been promoted to take the role of vice president and general manager.

Fuld, 42, played in the majors from 2007 to 2015. Given that he went to college at Stanford and majored in economics, he was viewed by many in the game as a future front office member. He got hired by the Phillies in 2017 with the title of major league player information coordinator. His name was then connected to various managerial openings over the years but he stuck with the Phils and was promoted to GM going into 2021. Dave Dombrowski had just been hired as the club’s president of baseball operations and Fuld would be second on the baseball decision-making pyramid.

The two sides have seemingly been happy with the relationship. In December of 2022, Fuld and the Phils signed an extension running through December 2025. In October of 2023, the Red Sox had some interest in Fuld replace chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, though Fuld declined to be interviewed for the opening.

Since Dombrowski is 68 years old, many considered Fuld a sort of protege or a president-in-waiting, but now it seems he is planning a shift. His focus will be away from the club for the next couple of years and he will return to direct his attention to the business side, rather than the baseball side.

Mattingly, 37, will now take over as Dombrowski’s second-in-command. The son of Don Mattingly, Preston played in the minors for a while but never got higher than High-A. He pivoted to non-playing roles, working with the Padres in the scouting department. In the fall of 2021, he was plucked away by the Phils, who hired him as director of player development.

He has clearly impressed the Phils, as he got promoted to assistant general manager just two years later, in November of 2023. After a year with that title, he has gotten bumped up again. He is still second on the club’s front office hierarchy, but it’s an impressive rise in a short time and it’s possible that he could eventually replace Dombrowski, depending on how things go. For now, given that there’s more than 30 years’ difference in age between the two, Mattingly will presumably be absorbing everything he can about the role from Dombrowski as he takes on a larger piece of the club’s front office makeup.

Here’s hoping DD remains with the organization after May 2026.

He has plans to depart as soon as Nashville gets green lit.

There are 2 ML teams that face the real possibility of playing at least this season, if not multiple seasons in AAA/spring training facilities, which has drawn the ire of the commish. Don’t see any expansion until everyone has beds and they’re tucked in nice and cozy (i.e ~3 years or more). Considering his contract is up after ’28, he’s chasing the clock since he’s said he’d retire at the end of his contract.

That doesnt’ mean they couldn’t announce it mid 2026 to start in like 2029 or something. He has also stated before he saw expansion as a real possibility before he was done.

@NickTheDev: DD said that he didn’t expect Nashville to be able to acquire a MLB team for 10 years or more. He seems to have given up his Nashville hopes. Looks like a group headlined by Dave Stewart is trying to get a team here.

Really shows Dombrowski et al don’t respect Fulds baseball evaluation skills since they are moving him to business side.

How is it proof of that and not, say, Fuld’s personal decision to pursue a career opportunity that has more stability and less blame placed on it than that of President of Baseball Ops. If the Phillies didn’t respect him they wouldn’t be reserving a role for him while he pursues his MBA, they’d just cut ties with him.

Good for Sam Fuld. I was always a fan of his. I think he’s also a type 2 diabetic as well. When he was with the Cubs he grew close to Ron Santo. Who passed from complications of diabetes

Since WWII the Phillies have had 5 owners.

All were/are quality people. At times the teams were good. At times they stunk. Mostly they were in the middle. Through it all it the Phillies have been a quality organization and operation.

Sam Fuld fits in now and apparently will well into the future.

Classy operation. Classy people all around.

Was surprised by this, but after thinking it through for a moment this is just another example of how the Phils have become so much more professional in the Middleton / DD era. Fuld is very smart; knows baseball and has the analytics background so we thought that he was heir apparent to DD. Instead they pivot, and Fuld takes all of that background, insight and experience to the business side once he gets the MBA.

Given the nature of the game today, and the fact that the Phils are looking to stick with the high dollar end of the payroll scale, this makes a ton of sense. Middleton has become one of the best owner’s in the game; DD is a HoF GM…just hard to fully grasp all of this as a long time fan. The organization has generally been classy and loyal, but rarely been an exemplar for the best front office and coaching staff in the game.

They are managing the present and future better than most companies and better than both of the US political parties. Though, I have to admit, the GOP is at least grooming Vance to run in 2028. We’ll see if he is likeable in the future.

If one is positing that JD Vance might be likeable in the future, or that the GOP has a shred of credibility whatsoever under Trump, then one sure has far bigger issues than worrying about the state of the Phillies front office.

Personally, I don’t think Vance will ever be likeable and I don’t think that the Trump administration will have any credibility. I just can’t say that the country will make better choices in the future, given what we have now.
