Max Fried Will Reportedly Choose Destination In Coming Days

By Darragh McDonald | December 10, 2024 at 2:45pm CDT

Left-hander Max Fried is one of the top remaining free agents but he could be coming off the board soon. Per a report from Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Fried is expected to pick his next club by Thursday, with the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays presented as the frontrunners. Rosenthal adds that right-hander Corbin Burnes is generating interest from the same three clubs, with the Giants perhaps involved there as well but not for Fried. The Rangers are mentioned as a possibility for Fried but that’s depicted as more of a long shot, with the Angels listed alongside the Giants as cubs that are not finalists for Fried.

It’s perhaps not a coincidence that the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays were finalists in the Juan Soto frenzy and are now listed as the most likely landing spots for Fried. The general expectation throughout the baseball world has been that the clubs with money to spend would focus on Soto until getting clarity on that situation, with those that missed out then pivoting to other targets. Now that Soto is going to the Mets, that seems to be how things are indeed playing out.

All three clubs are looking to make a big splash, though for different reasons. The Yankees just made it to the World Series, but suffered a deflating five-game loss to the Dodgers in which they looked clearly outmatched. They then lost last year’s big splash when Soto moved from the Bronx to Queens. The Red Sox have been dialing back payroll in recent years with lackluster results to go along with it, though now seem motivated to big big dogs again. The Jays were good during the regular season from 2020 to 2023 but suffered heartbreaking ends in each of those years, narrowly missing the playoffs in one of them with three quick postseason exits in the others. They followed that up with a dismal 2024 season that saw them fall to the basement of the A.L. East.

In different ways, each club is looking to both improve their respective rosters for next year while also perhaps mollifying a restive fanbase. Soto would have been one way of doing that but that’s now off the table.

Fried, 31 in January, has been a strong pitcher at the major league level for quite some time. He got brief big league looks in 2017 and 2018 but has been an established big leaguer for the past six seasons. From 2019 to the present, he has tossed 824 2/3 innings, allowing 3.06 earned runs per nine. His 23.8% strikeout rate and 6.4% walk rate in that time were both a bit above average while his 54.1% ground ball rate was excellent. Only Framber Valdez and Logan Webb had better ground ball rates for that time, among pitchers with at least 550 innings pitched, and Fried had a slightly better strikeout rate than those two. Fried was also a key part of Atlanta’s postseason rotations throughout that time.

There is a little bit of injury risk, as Fried was limited to 14 starts last year due to a forearm strain and had a brief IL stint in 2024 due to neuritis in that same forearm. That’s bit concerning but Fried managed to make 29 starts this year, logging 174 1/3 innings, and there hasn’t been anything to suggest he won’t be healthy for 2025.

At the start of the offseason, MLBTR predicted Fried could land a six-year deal with a $156MM guarantee, though it’s possible that Fried’s earning power has jumped since then. Pitchers like Luis Severino, Yusei Kikuchi, Frankie Montas, Matthew Boyd and Clay Holmes have outearned expectations and the massive Soto deal has perhaps altered industry spending expectations more generally.

For the Yankees, they don’t strictly need pitching. Their rotation is already fairly deep with Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodón, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, Marcus Stroman, Nestor Cortes and other options on the roster. However, Fried would certainly upgrade that group and they could then perhaps use the surplus to make a trade, with both Stroman and Cortes have been in previous rumors.

Boston’s chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has said he would like to raise the ceiling of the club’s rotation, which currently has a core three of Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford. The Sox will get Lucas Giolito back at some point during the 2025 season, once he recovers from last year’s elbow surgery. They have depth options like Richard Fitts, Cooper Criswell and Quinn Priester but adding Fried would help the club with its aims of improving the rotation and the club more generally.

The Toronto rotation has a veteran core of Kevin Gausman, José Berríos and Chris Bassitt. It seems likely that Bowden Francis will get a shot at having a spot next year since he was so strong in the second half of 2024. Yariel Rodríguez is an option for the fifth spot but he also has plenty of relief experience and could get bumped to the bullpen. Jake Bloss is on the roster and has encouraging potential but limited experience and could be ticketed for the Triple-A rotation.

While all three clubs are looking at Fried, they have another option in Burnes. He has flashed a higher ceiling than Fried but hasn’t hit that ceiling in the past two years. From 2020 to 2022, he posted a 2.62 ERA with a 33.4% strikeout rate, 6.4% walk rate and 47.6% ground ball rate. Over the past two seasons, his 3.15 ERA has still been a strong mark but with a diminished strikeout rate of 24.3%. He is still perceived as a strong option on account of his durability and overall strong results, with MLBTR predicted him for a $200MM guarantee over seven years.

The Giants make sense for a rotation addition and seemingly prefer Burnes to Fried. Their rotation currently consists of Webb, Robbie Ray and Kyle Harrison. President of baseball operations Buster Posey said this week that Jordan Hicks will get another shot at a rotation job. Guys like Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp could battle for the fifth spot but getting Burnes would obviously be a boon to the group.

Both Burnes and Fried rejected qualifying offers and are therefore associated with penalties, which differ depending on who ultimately signs them. The Giants are perhaps the most interesting club in this group as they already agreed to sign QO guy in Willy Adames. Since they paid the competitive balance tax last year, that means forfeiting $1MM of international bonus pool space and two draft picks, while signing another QO would effectively double that.

The Rangers’ interest in Fried was reported previously but also characterized as more of a long shot. They definitely want rotation upgrades, including a hope of re-signing Nathan Eovaldi, but they might need more clarity on their finances. They no longer have a broadcast deal with Diamond Sports Group and have been looking into creating their own regional sports network but haven’t quite figured that all out yet. They are reportedly hoping to stay under the CBT in 2025 and they might need to make progress on the broadcast deal before throwing big money around.

The Angels are seemingly only mentioned to touch on Fried’s potential geographic preferences. Fried was born and raised in Southern California, then committed to UCLA before being drafted by the Padres. He was traded to Atlanta as a prospect and has spent his entire major league career with them so far. That club has signed many players to extensions but Fried wasn’t one of them. Rosenthal relays that some clubs feared Fried would prefer to return to the West Coast but it seems his three primary suitors are all A.L. East clubs.

Time will tell how things play out with Fried and Burnes, but it seems that the expected post-Soto domino effect might be coming to pass. As clubs pivot to plan B or plan C or plan D, guys like Fried and Burnes are seeing their markets heat up, which could potentially also impact guys like Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso and others soon as well.

He was there on the back end of the terrible years. Sad to see him leave, but the injuries piling up the past few years seem pretty concerning and hes about 10 years removed from tommy john surgery. Also, those playoff starts were demoralizing. Makes “playoff Kershaw” seem much more palatable.

Would fit with the Padres but the Padres are going all 1992-93.

SD discount? If you cant go to the Dodgers there is a team down the 5 that is pretty good. Beautiful downtown ballpark, amazing weather and passionate fans.

Take a little discount and you may find yourself in the midst of a playoff run with a burgeoning rivalry.

Pretty cool unis and an international fan base.

Red Sox, Jays and Orioles could all not only use a front end starter but a lefty front end starter. I believe he’s from California so perhaps the Giants.

The Jays had a remarkably unproductive offense last season and there is currently a gaping hole where a bullpen should be. A good starting pitcher, while useful, should be well down their list of priorities.

That’s all true, but Bassit leaves after this season, and adding another starter helps the bullpen as Rodriguez could be moved to help the pen

But they could fill that fifth rotation spot with a less then ace pitcher. Gausman/Berrios/Bassitt/Francis is an ‘ok’ if not ideal top four.

If they don’t address the offense and bullpen sufficiently, signing an ace will be a waste of money.

He may well be, which is the reason I would rather have Fried instead of Burnes. Burnes strikeout rate is down along with contact rate up, and with his age and the size of the contract he’ll demand I would rather pass on that dude. Giants have very young arms coming up,

As someone who watches a ton of baseball myself, I don’t believe Burnes will age well with him trending in the wrong direction on strikeout rate and not missing as many bats. He will demand 200mill and to me that isn’t worth it. I don’t keep mentioning age at all, I personally would rather have Fried over Burnes. That was my point from the beginning.

Poolhall, don’t get me wrong, Burnes has been a great pitcher. I’m just not fond of paying for the down years that’s all. Once a downturn starts, sometimes it’s a fluke, an off year, whatever, but I’ve seen madbum with a ton of innings on his arm and Burnes is a workhorse himself, and I get a sick feeling that he may only have a couple years left of elite pitching

Burnes strikeout rate is down, his contact rate is down, and from reports I’ve been watching on him, I don’t think he’s going to age well at all. I don’t want the Giants digging into more bad contracts that won’t age well with all the young arms coming up.

I wouldnt whine after winning FOUR championships if my ownership wasnt out there every off season saying “This is the year” or whatever other crap they say. Just dont say anything.
But, metsin4, i wouldnt be pointing a finger at another fan-base now because you signed one player. you have two more rings needed to catch up to our last 20 years

I like Steve Cohen, when he bought the team he said, “championship in 5 years”. Since then he has brought in Verlander, Scherzer, Baez, Martinez, Soto. He is standing by his word.
Imagine now he said, “Full Throttle”, or “Raise The Ceiling”, or “All In”, and then brought in Paxson, Giolito and Hendriks. How would you feel? Maybe a little whiny………Exactly

Not at all. Your owner has brought in many of the all time best free agent players of all time. He did a quick reset while still fielding a decent team. The Red Sox are now primed to be dominant again. Ironically your team probably don’t even need to many free agents as they are loaded with young players and prospects.

Sox fans were also whiny during the Curse of the Bambino era. They whine if they do and whine if they don’t. This is a regional trait; it must be something in the chowder.

metsin4 – Name the guys that are “all time best free agent players” because the last great acquisition was JD Martinez and that was in 2018.

Also, out team doesn’t have a great group of young players until they actually play great instead of have great promotional information about them. DURAN and HOUCK have proven themselves but nobody else out of the young group of farm players. It’s all guess work not fact.

This team has POTENTIAL today but not the type that wins rings or even division titles without at least 3 all-star quality additions to put them over the hump in a year or two.

We did not complain when the Celtics rolled through the NBA with little resistance for #18.

We wont be complaining when they win #19 either.

In fact, outside of the ridiculous deflate gate, I did not hear much complaining when NE ruled the NFL for 20 years either.

Nobody in NE complained when UConn went back to back and we wont complain when the Men and Women sweep the NCAAs in 2025 either.

Sorry, its hard to hear what the rest of the country says when we are winning all the time…

metsin4 – A mets fan who has no idea what winning feels like is suggesting winning is not something you should be upset about. I guess you can’t miss it if it never happened to you!!!! hahahaha

Boston competed for 15 years then suddenly stopped. The drought prior to the 15 years was 86 years. Most of us who have lived through this 5 year drought don’t have enough years left to see another ring even if the drought is half that of the last one.

Why wouldn’t we be pissed? If the Mets ever win one come back and tell us how winning doesn’t matter!!! hahahaha

metsin4 — My father was born in Worcester and was a lifelong Red Sox fan. He was born in 1919, the year after the Red Sox won their last pre-Curse World Series. He died in 2003, the year before the Curse was broken. So, the Red Sox never won a World Series in his lifetime. But shed no tears for my dad as he had his freakin’ Celtics.

It was sad to watch my dad watch Buckner play on live TV (even though I was rooting for the Mets). The next night, he refused to watch Game 7, even after the Red Sox had taken a 3-0 lead. He knew it was pointless.

I’m sorry, are we supposed to be stoked about it that our team’s front office lies to us about their intentions every winter?

I’m a perfectly reasonable fan. I get that competitive windows ebb and flow. I’m not asking for world series or bust every single year. All I ask is for them to put in an honest effort toward putting a watchable/competitive team out there, and to not insult our intelligence by constantly lying to us. They’ve been doing the opposite of both for five straight years, some of us are sick of it. Sorry you feel that’s too much to expect from them. Nobody’s making you read Red Sox posts if you don’t want to hear how we feel about it.

Trout27 – The ground ball average is a nightmare for the Red Sox infield as is. Devers sucks. Story isn’t the answer. Mayer can’t stay healthy and was a butcher in the minors. Campbell is the best shot going into 2025. He’s proven to be an excellent hitter at the lower levels and his defense was above league average and there is nobody else on the team with those skills. Fried is only valuable if Devers is DH and a guy like Arenado or Bregman is playing 3B and Campbell works out at SS. Snell and Fried would have been great additions for the Red Sox but the odds of Fried not ending up elsewhere like Snell are very, very low.

Everyone knows Boston needs two top of the rotation SPs just like they did in each of the last five seasons. Will they get 2 or even 1. No.

There are not many top of the rotation pitchers still available and Boston has roughly $99Million to spend on them. Can they get two from this short list below:
    1 – Burnes
    2 – Fried
Are you surprised that there are only two left? I’m not.

Will they be in on them? Of course, as always. Will they get one? NOPE

So that leaves the next tier of pitchers who are a bit closer to Houck’s skill level as the Red Sox best starter as of today.

1 – Eovaldi (Love the guy but I doubt he could handle dealing with Cora)
    2 – Manaea
    3 – Flaherty
    4 – Buehler
    5 – Verlander
    6 – Scherzer

Note – This group is not a great group of alternatives. Eovaldi is solid but he’d have to be crazy to rejoin Cora. Manaea is inconsistent and will cost more than he is worth. Flaherty might work if the contract is short. Buehler can’t stay healthy so he’s Breslow’s type of guy. A huge risk for too much money. Then there are the two savvy but very old vets. If you can’t get them for low base salaries with massive incentives I’d take either one knowing they might not exceed 150 innings. It’s like an old version of Buehler and his injury risk except these guys are guaranteed winners unlike Buehler who has been all hype his whole career.

There appears to be no good answer except signing both Fried and Burnes and we know that won’t happen so does it really matter if Devers moves since the team won’t be competitive once again? Let the cry baby play 3B just don’t make things worse by crapping on Casas and moving the self absorbed defensive liability to 1B.

Boston could be so great with just a few high cost and strategic moves but since they don’t have the smarts to solve their problems, we’re looking at another .500 season.

Wish for Christmas, Devers for Arenado and contract Fried and Burnes.

Fried is a legitimately good pitcher who would improve any rotation. For the Yankees….how much better would he make their staff and for how long? They won’t get much in return for either Stroman or Nestor, so you are looking at the delta between performance and cost differential. The Yankees just lost one of the top hitters in the game, and have some gaping holes in their line-up. Dodgers were far superior to them. Would this be a good investment given their other needs?
