Alek Manoah Targeting August Return To Blue Jays

By Nick Deeds | January 12, 2025 at 4:24pm CDT

After a brutal 2023 season, right-hander Alek Manoah returned to the Blue Jays’ rotation in early May with the hope of reestablishing himself as one of the game’s top young arms. Unfortunately, that goal didn’t even last a month as Manoah was sidelined after just five starts and wound up undergoing Tommy John surgery in early June. The righty’s timetable for return to the mound has been unclear since then, but recently Manoah himself provided an update to Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star as part of an interview for the Star’s “Deep Left Field” baseball podcast. During the interview, Manoah identified August as his target for a return to action.

“…to go be a deadline acquisition for the Toronto Blue Jays and just help as much as I can over the final two months of the season, that’s what I’m striving for,” Manoah said on the podcast. “I’m striving to get bullpens in March, to get to live BPs in June, and then get some rehabs going and hopefully be in a position to help this team down the stretch.”

That timeline would have Manoah returning to the mound in Toronto roughly fourteen months after first going under the knife. That’s hardly an atypical timeline for a pitcher in the right-hander’s situation given that rehabbing Tommy John surgery usually takes between 12 and 18 months, though Manoah acknowledged that “bumps in the road” down the line could complicate or delay the ideal timetable he laid out.

Of course, even a healthy return to the mound in early August would come with questions. The right-hander was last healthy and effective back in 2022, when he posted a sterling 2.24 ERA in 196 2/3 innings of work for the Jays en route to a third-place finish in AL Cy Young award voting and the first All-Star appearance of his career. That fantastic performance seemed to indicate that Manoah was ticketed for long-term success at the front of Toronto’s rotation, but the 2023 season threw that plan off the rails as he struggled to a 5.87 ERA with a 6.01 FIP in 19 starts and spent time in the minor leagues due to his poor performance.

Manoah’s return to the Jays’ rotation last May was something of a mixed bag. His 3.70 ERA across five starts was solid enough, while his 25.2% strikeout rate and 7.8% walk rate were essentially in line with his numbers from 2021 and ’22. With that being said, Manoah was getting crushed when batters did make contact with his pitches. He surrendered five homers in just 24 1/3 innings of work last year and posted a ghastly 10.8% barrel rate. That came in a sample size of just 65 batted balls, of course, and given the fact that Manoah underwent UCL surgery shortly thereafter it’s fair to question how indicative that performance will be of his abilities when he returns to the mound. It’s certainly far from impossible to imagine Manoah, still just 27, re-establishing himself as a quality rotation piece once he’s put rehab behind him and resumed pitching.

In the meantime, however, the Jays are constructing their 2025 rotation without expecting him to be a major part of the equation. As things stand, veterans Kevin Gausman, José Berríos, and Chris Bassitt stand as a trio of proven arms while Bowden Francis flashed high-end results late in the 2024 season. Yariel Rodríguez currently figures to round out the group with Jake Bloss available as a depth option at Triple-A. Right-hander Jeff Hoffman signed with the club on a three-year deal that guarantees him $33MM late last week, but despite speculation throughout the winter he could look to pitch out of the rotation with his next club the Jays have indicated they’ll be using him in the bullpen.

It’s a decent rotation mix even without Hoffman involved, but there’s clearly room for improvement. Gausman endured the worst season he’s had since breaking out during the 2020 campaign last year; he pitched to a 3.82 ERA (105 ERA+) with 21.4% strikeout rate that was down nearly ten points from the year prior. Berrios pitched to mid-rotation results last year but also had troubling peripherals, including a 19.5% strikeout rate and a 4.72 FIP. Both of those numbers suggest Berrios may profile more as a back-of-the-rotation arm if he can’t bounce back going forward, and that’s likely where Bassitt fits best as well after he posted a below-average 4.16 ERA in his age-35 season last year.

Given all the questions surrounding a rotation that is poised to enter 2025 hoping for Gausman to rebound and Francis to prove he’s capable of pitching at an above-average level over the course of a full season as a starter, it’s hardly a surprise that the club has been connected to a number of starters in free agency this winter. Both Corbin Burnes and Max Fried already landed elsewhere despite involvement from Toronto in both markets, but Jack Flaherty and Nick Pivetta remain available as potential upgrades the club has reported interest in.

Is Alek Manoah the Ben Simmons of the MLB? Walking out and not showing up for his team last year; then quiet quitting whenever he gets on the field. Seems like he’s forcing them to trade him.

How was this guy tendered a contract? $2.2M? This is why the Jays have a payroll approaching $240M

Theyre payroll is $240M because they spend money frivolously. Look at 2024 and all the dumb money spent… Kiermeier, Turner, how about Biggio getting $4M, etc, etc, etc. Last year the narrative was “how is their payroll $240M, they have no players”.

How about taking that $2.2M and spending it on a low leverage reliever that will give you innings between now and August? What happens when Manoah comes back? He pitches 3 innings at a team for a team that’s no better than 3rd place by August. They already have that in Yariel Rodriguez, another poor spending choice by the Jays spectacular front office LOOOOL

Jays have a top heave payroll. 50% of their payroll will go to Springer, Vlad, Gausman, Bassitt and Berrios, this has nothing to do with role players and free agent 1 year deals. Stop this you’re embarrassing yourself

Did you call for every team to fold except the Dodgers. If not, you are biased, a hypocrite, and your credibility is ZERO to comment on anyone’s board.

Trade him for a modest prospect. Could pay off. Waiting around won’t produce anything, and we know this Blue Jays front office doesn’t do much for their homegrown talent anyhow. They spend far too much on mostly bizarre free agent signings (or mostly just pursuing them these days) while ignoring Vlad and Bo these past few years.

Unbelievable that they actually came to an agreement with Vlad for this season. That’s a first. They have been a terribly run organization.

Vlad is 25. He would command as much now as he would have last offseason. After the jays poor results this past season, There is a better argument to trade him now than there was to sell low last offseason when the jays were coming off of 89 wins and making the playoffs.

His value is probably identical to what it was last winter, you’re the one with the unreasonable hypotheticals.

          Shane-

Before they worked it out the Jays tried to give Bichette a pitiful 5 million while he was asking for 7.5. It’s a miracle they came to an agreement with Vlad for this season- they are always trying to short change him, and are obsessed with signing free agents for far too much money rather than extend their star- should’ve come to an extension agreement years ago. And this offseason they are looking at every free agent while ignoring Vlad to the point he imposes a deadline that leaks to the public.

The Blue Jays are a horribly run team and if you choose to forget all these details regarding the horrible way they’ve regarded their homegrown then don’t bother commenting. I’m embarrassed for you..

I’m not choosing to ignore anything. I’m arguing your point. I don’t defend the blue jays front office at all. They should have/should sign Vlad. What you’re referencing with Bo Bichette is called an arbitration meeting. Every team has them with their young talent. And they put forward a number they are comfortable with, the player does the same. An arbitrator is also present. Be embarrassed all you want but haven’t schooled anybody so don’t get confused.

I remember the fans screaming for the Jays to discharge Chris Carpenter, Al Leiter, Roy Halladay, David Wells, David Cone, plus many others and what happened to all those pitchers, many are going to the hall of fame which shows the ignorance of the fans. Manoah could be the next pitcher the fans demand to be cast aside that goes on to become a future ace of a DIFFERENT team.

Ashley-None of those pitchers had the struggles of Manoah with the exception of Carpenter- and they got rid of him! He was really good but no hall of famer. He became great in St. Louis- maybe he would’ve fizzled out if he stayed. Not clear.

Also, a lot of players you are naming left Toronto while they were still good- and I don’t think they all left because management thought they were burnt out. Manoah would be good to trade before you get NOTHING for him and he dissolves into obscurity-he’s 27 so the time to do that is now.

It’s best not to bet on the homegrown talent sticking around and thriving in a place where (currently) the front office is more concerned with signing (or trying to sign) big free agents and ignoring that homegrown talent- Vlad should’ve signed an extension years ago- maybe he would’ve put up better stats if he wasn’t constantly fighting with management to pay him. Maybe he would have been a three time mvp by now if he played for another team.

I don’t know, but I wouldn’t count on Manoah blossoming into anything great – not with the current philosophy in Toronto, anyhow! Maybe HE should go to St. Louis and it will work out like it did for CC.

This is such hot garbage, pitching is an unnatural motion that puts tremendous stress on joints and ligaments over time.

Him being a bigger guy has nothing to do with injury, most pitchers, regardless of the shape they are in deal with injury at some point.

Calling the top performing athletes in the world, “fat and lazy,” is just something some people need to do. Interestingly, while being layman, those same people also possess more knowledge about a player’s health and biomechanics than the best training staffs money can buy. But the biggest mystery is why they don’t monetize that knowledge.

@LFG It almost seems like Zion plays a sport where it requires more athleticism opposed to mastering of a specific skill such as pitching or hitting.

Some players do harm themselves by not training. Others it’s the opposite. Wells, Sandoval, Kruk, etc all examples of larger players who have lost weight and #s have declined. For Manoah he seems to fit those just mentioned who are just large individuals. As for a torn UCL, not seeing the corelation with weight that there is with just the simple violent motion of pitching in general.

He was listed at 6’6″ and 260 as a freshman at West Virginia. Look at the picture then and look at the ones from the 2024 season.

Alek Manoah certainly is a full-figured gal.

He is trying his best to look like the Big Sexy and since Bartolo was 7 inches shorter, he has to be even heavier.

There is absolutely zero reason to trade Manoah now.

I shockingly still believe in this guy, and have a feeling he will eventually have a productive career as a middle of the rotation pitcher.

Nice that he’ll come back for the second half, perfect timing for when the jays have a fire sale

No point in pressing him for 2025 and instead build up for 2026. He’s fragile like Mr Glass and has to lose lots of weight. His arm and body are failing him so he might end up traded or let go like Romano once he’s healed. Not cool to ruin his long term health for our entertainment

No Toronto pitching prospect has ever worked out under Pete Walker. Many highly rated and all have flamed out. Free Agents have done ok but they were already good. Ray, Gausman, Basset, Berrios all strong before Toronto. He’s way overrated and I question his value.

That has more to do with the quality of the prospects vs the pitching coach.

You are also very conveniently leaving out guys like Ray, Kikuchi, Matz who he helped.

jays haven’t had any good pitching prospects for you to lay blame on a coach

If a pitching coach teaches the Roger Beshens Football Slider you can tell he really knows his stuff.

He might be better off targeting getting his weight down to 220-240.

Many pitchers at all levels have experienced setbacks in their comeback attempts. by throwing too soon after surgery. People who have never thrown a pitch before cannot understand how the arm should feel.
Only pitchers themselves can determine how their arm feels and decide if they should throw.
Alek should travel to Phoenix and practice throwing with Roger Beshens to improve his Football Slider technique.
Roger Beshens recently recorded all the Dbacks sliders. Roger used his understandings of metrics and shaping techniques to easily talk to the Dback pitchers.

The Blue Jays should hire Roger Beshens the Football Slider guy in some capacity. He just completed recording all the Dbacks Sliders.
Roger Beshens used his understanding of metrics and shaping techniques of his Football Slider to easily talk to the Dback pitchers.
There’s a free video of Roger Beshens in the Dbacks Clubhouse available online. No Runs, Drips, or errors. Because Roger Beshens never requests anything.

Its extremely hard being a Jays fan. They are simply terrible at Drafting, and they have no idea how to develop pitching. its been miserable to watch for years!

Saw the Blue Jays play the Tigers in Detroit last season and thought that kid weighed close to 350 lbs. He is both tall and extremely overweight. He needs to get his weight under control.

For all their faults, missteps, and misfires over the past decade or so, the FO deserves credit for not extending Manoah after that phenomenal 2022 season. What they do with him going forward is on them, though.

I don’t believe Alek Manoah can manage the attention that the Roger Beshens Football Slider might bring him.
