Orioles Sign Jorge Mateo To Extension

By Anthony Franco | January 28, 2025 at 5:37pm CDT

The Orioles announced this evening that they’ve agreed to a deal with utilityman Jorge Mateo to avoid arbitration. It’s a one-year contract that comes with a club option for 2026. Mateo has five years of service time and would have qualified for free agency next winter, so the deal adds an extra season of team control. The Quality Control Sports client reportedly receives a $3.55MM salary next season. The club option is valued at $5.5MM with another $500K in escalators based on this year’s playing time. The option price would jump by $125K apiece at 460, 480, 500 and 520 plate appearances.

Teams had until January 15 to agree to terms with their arbitration-eligible players. If no deal was in place by then, they needed to exchange filing figures. They were free to continue negotiations beyond that point, though most clubs refuse to discuss straight one-year deals after the exchange deadline. Mateo had filed for a $4MM salary, while the Orioles filed at $3.1MM. They settled at the midpoint, though Mateo concedes a ’26 club option to do so.

The addition of the club option on Mateo’s deal means the Orioles haven’t broken their self-imposed “file and trial” system. Arbitration deals that include an option year cannot be used as precedents in future hearings. It wraps up Baltimore’s arbitration dealings for this winter. The O’s had agreed to terms with their 11 other arbitration-eligible players by January 15. This is the second straight year in which the Orioles reached a late arbitration deal to buy out a free agent season. They took a similar tack with first baseman Ryan O’Hearn last February. That ended up working out for the club, as O’Hearn played well enough for Baltimore to trigger an $8MM option to keep him from hitting the market.

Mateo is headed into his fourth full season with the Orioles. Baltimore grabbed him off waivers from the Padres in the second half of the ’21 campaign. He had a career year in 2022, as he led the American League with 35 stolen bases while posting elite defensive grades at shortstop. There’s been plenty of speculation over the following two years that the Orioles could deal Mateo, who was pushed out of an everyday infield role by Gunnar Henderson, Jordan Westburg and eventually Jackson Holliday. The O’s have opted against making such a move, evidently valuing Mateo’s speed and defensive versatility off the bench more than whatever they might’ve received in a trade.

Over the last two seasons, Mateo has gotten into 177 games. He’s only hitting .222/.267/.363 over that stretch, though he has swiped 45 bases in 52 attempts. Mateo can back up Henderson and Holliday in the middle infield and has the speed to spell Cedric Mullins in center field. Holliday’s early struggles gave Mateo an opportunity to play regularly at the keystone early last year. Unfortunately, his season was cut short in late July. Mateo tore the UCL in his left (non-throwing) elbow when he collided with Henderson while pursuing a slow grounder up the middle. He underwent surgery in late August.

There’s no indication that the injury will affect Mateo’s readiness for the start of next season. Baltimore was confident enough in his health to keep him around. He’ll join Ramón Urías and new backup catcher Gary Sánchez as locks for Brandon Hyde’s bench so long as he’s healthy.

Baltimore’s player payroll now sits around $156MM, according to the RosterResource calculations. Those are almost entirely short-term commitments. Offseason pickup Tyler O’Neill is the only player on a guaranteed deal that stretches beyond next season (and he can opt out after this year). Their only other commitment is a $1MM option buyout for reliever Andrew Kittredge. That opens the possibility that Mateo plays well enough for Baltimore to exercise the option, though they’re unlikely to be hurting for infield talent anytime soon.

Francys Romero first reported Mateo’s $3.55MM salary and the $5.5MM option with $500K in escalators. The Associated Press had the escalator specifics. Image courtesy of USA Today Sports.

Not going to lie, I completely forgot how good a hitter he was for us. But those were the dark days for us, pretending we had any shot at competing.

Mateo reminds me of Anthony Gose and Brett Gardner. He seems like the type of guy who can’t live without baseball.

The Orioles are a “file and trial “ team. They don’t negotiate with arbitration players once figures are exchanged. The club option is just a loophole to pretend it’s a multi year contract so they didn’t break their policy. Doubtful they pick up the option. Similar to Columbe and Mancini.

They picked up the options on O’Hearn and Perez from last year’s signings. It’s not like this has never happened before.

Beat me to it. Club option holds value for the team. They had no buyouts on Coulombe & Ohearn also.

True but when somebody like Mountcastle or Kjersted hit a leadoff single in the 8th inning of a tie game Mateo can steal second for them and come around to score from second on a single from the next guy. Then go out and play solid D to close out the win in the 9th.

Hell yeah, I was hoping we would get a club option on Mateo’s final arb year contract. He’s low-key a pretty awesome bench piece/backup and I don’t mind having a potential extra year of his services if he comes back strong (for a reserve player) from his elbow injury.

      Invaluable.

Starting SS in that winning 2022 season. Got the majority of reps in the 101 win 23 season as the Os FO stuck with their long term plan of getting Henderson more and more reps. Then in 24, gets kicked over to 2b so to start Henderson at short. Thanks Jorge. Give’em hell in 25!

      Invaluable.

Solid negotiations all around. I don’t believe it’ll be an option they’ll see value in for ‘26 but obviously Mateo’s camp has some sort of opinion it may happen. Or they just all agreed to meet in the middle and it’s a quiet understanding that he’s not seeing that 5.5 million deal in 26.

    Sighhhhhh.
Won’t spend money on starting pitchers. But will do it for a guy who has posted a .267 obp for three straight seasons. The “elite defense” has slipped to be merely just above average since that 2022 season.
Urias can back up 3B/SS/2B and he can hit.
Yes Mateo can run. No it doesn’t do much good when so many plate appearances result in dragging the bat back to the dugout.
The Orioles love to place a lot of hype on fast shortstops who have a decent glove and they can’t hit: Juan Bell, Manny Alexander, Cesar Izturis, and Richie Martin. Probably because these players are cheap, and they are cheap for a reason. Look up any of these guys and see how they did nothing once the Orioles finally realized having production from the roster spot would be nice, and you see Mateo’s future.
Can’t wait to hear more about wonderful hustle and drive and all that from the people here who supposedly know so much more about baseball than me.
This is one of the reasons why you can never be all in on taking the Orioles seriously as a true contender.

Honestly Thornton your Mateo is why you can’t be all in is one of the weirdest takes. He’s the absolute ideal bench player.

I get your apprehension if he’s playing too much but why the hell would you not want a plus glove and elite speed on your bench? What actually can make an impact off the bench? A power hitter coming off the bench cold taking 1AB a game? I’m far more confident w/ Mateo being able to swipe a bag and make a defensive stop off the bench:

I think signing Sugano & Morton to be your rotation replacements for Burnes is far far worse if we’re coming up with reasons.

        jbigz12-
Its the straw that broke the back of any optimism I had for this offseason.
Won’t spend on pitching, but they’ll pay $3.5M for a guy who shouldn’t get off the bench but for the odd off day or defensive replacement? If he is seeing more time, someone’s hurt or something’s wrong.
The other moves I covered in other posts.
        – Value of Burnes > Sugano and Morton. Yes, nice to have back end depth, but it does not equal the value of an ace who improves the rotation top to bottom.
        – Value of O’Neill + Sanches <= Santander + McCann. This is based upon O'Neill's injury history and expecting him to miss a good chunk of games. Plus, Santander not getting the amount of deal as expected reduces the cost effectiveness angle.
        – Very little committed to 2026 and nothing for 2028, among/at the bottom of the league. This really has been bugging me from the whole "commitment to winning".
        – No extensions within the young core.
That's a pretty disappointing offseason. The most optimistic folks on here can't say they did more than run in place.

As for Mateo, great, he can come in and save a handful of runs with his glove over the course of the season. Then he'll cost 4x that with his inability to hit.

Jorge is one of those guys whom you don’t fully appreciate his value until he’s gone. We learned last year what an impact missing his presence. It’s also nice to be able to give him a little security to help him rebound from that gorey elbow injury.

      Monkey
The Orioles once tried to sell their fans a pile of doo doo with Cesar Izturis. So much speed and such great defense! At least at that time they were trying to solidify SS; they’d had 4 guys who couldn’t hit or field. It was the same angle about “being a gamer” or “hustling”.
The guy hit .240/.283/.292 over 3 years, though in Year 3 they got JJ Hardy. (Still higher OBP than Mateo though).
Turns out Hardy was also a superior fielder as well as being a pretty solid hitter for most of his time with the Orioles.
