White Sox To Promote Kyle Teel

By Anthony Franco | June 5, 2025 at 11:57pm CDT

The White Sox scratched top catching prospect Kyle Teel from today’s Triple-A lineup and plan to promote him to the majors, reports Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The team has not made the move official, but the social media account for TeelsBaseball — a training facility run by his father Garett — has announced the call-up. Chicago will need to select his contract and make corresponding moves for the active and 40-man rosters.

It’s an exciting day for White Sox fans. Teel was the centerpiece of the Garrett Crochet return. (Chase Meidroth was the first prospect from the group to debut and has played his way to everyday work in the middle infield.) Boston’s first-round pick in 2023, Teel has ranked among the sport’s most talented catching prospects throughout his time in pro ball.

The University of Virginia product was essentially the consensus #4 prospect in the Red Sox’s system. He was behind Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer but was viewed as one of the sport’s 50 or so best minor leaguers in his own right. Teel ranked between 32nd and 52nd on the preseason lists at MLB Pipeline, ESPN and Baseball America. He slotted 42nd on BA’s most recent in-season update, which came out this week.

Baseball America now ranks Teel as the White Sox’s #2 prospect and their top position player talent. The left-handed hitter has a well-rounded profile that gives him a good chance to be a long-term starter behind the plate. He has been particularly good offensively throughout his minor league career. Teel has a .300/.401/.456 batting line in pro ball. He has kept up a similar pace during his first season in the Chicago system.

Teel has played 50 games this year with Triple-A Charlotte. He carries a .295/.394/.492 slash with eight home runs through 213 plate appearances. As he has throughout his career, he’s taking free passes at an excellent 14.1% clip. Teel has struck out a little more than a quarter of the time, but the overall production has been strong. He was on fire throughout the past month, hitting .333/.444/.613 in May after posting a .626 OPS in April.

There isn’t a whole lot left for Teel to prove against minor league pitching. He’ll probably strike out a decent amount in the majors, but his plate discipline should give him a solid on-base floor. The Sox are certainly going to have him in the lineup on most days, though it’ll be interesting to see how they deploy him defensively. Scouting reports suggest he’s a solid defensive catcher.

The Sox already have a touted rookie catcher in Edgar Quero, who began the season playing alongside Teel in Charlotte. He and Korey Lee are splitting the work behind the plate. The switch-hitting Quero isn’t hitting for any power, but he’s batting .250 with a .341 on-base percentage in 37 games. He has hit at every minor league stop and deserves continued playing time. Lee is unlikely to be more than a long-term backup, but the White Sox probably won’t want to carry only two rookie catchers.

Teel said this week that he has begun taking first base drills. He has not played anywhere other than catcher in a minor league game. Teel could mix in at first base, where the Sox have gotten nothing all season. They’ll probably also use both rookie catchers somewhat frequently at designated hitter. That’d push Andrew Benintendi into more of a full-time left field role while cutting the playing time for journeyman outfielder Joshua Palacios.

As a consensus Top 100 talent, Teel meets the eligibility for the Prospect Promotion Incentive. That means he could earn a full service year if he finished in the top two in AL Rookie of the Year balloting. The A’s Jacob Wilson may have already locked up one of those spots, but there’s at least an outside chance for Teel to play well enough to get consideration for the other. The White Sox would not receive a bonus draft choice if that happens because they didn’t promote him early enough to spend 172 days in the majors. If he doesn’t earn the full service year, Teel will remain under club control for at least six seasons beyond this one. He likely wouldn’t reach arbitration eligibility until the 2028-29 offseason.

Always hoping for two way trades as it triggers more of the same. It will be interesting years from now to find out if Boston kept or traded away but a superstar. I always think of Sale and imagine if Devers was traded instead of Moncada. Good luck kid. Enjoy the show and live our dream…

I hated that Boston had to include Teel in the Crochet deal, but I will have to say that the fleecing of Narvarez from the Yankees during the offseason takes some of that sting away. Narvarez has been one of the very few bright spots for Boston this year (along with Crochet) and he has a real chance to make the All Star team this year given his defensive profile and a much better offensive showing than anyone expected. Big Dumper will obviously be the starting All Star catcher but Narvarez could be chosen as a backup. Let’s just hope he can continue his excellent play for years to come.

Ok. Teel can hopefully be main catcher ahead of Lee and little DH, Elko gets run at 1B and Quero is DH most games…..basically in proper roles. Meidroth looking great in the tablesetter OBP/solid defender role. Now let’s hope he is setting the table for big bats they need to develop.

Quero likely headed back to Charlotte so he gets more time behind the plate. He needs to develop more as C, not DH.

Could very well be the move, but trying to will their way into Quero being a mediocre backup C at best does more harm than good since it’s the most crucial D position. The bat is his most valuable upside and demands of C unfortunately weighs that down. It would be nice to see if he can become more of a mid-order bat than a slow singles hitter if that is a laser focus.

but whitesox got an amazing return with meidroth off to a great major league start, and teel about to tear it up too…
with all the other prospects like braden, schultz, hagen, quero… this tm might actually compete in a couple of years!

I wanted Boston to have given Medroith a shot. Perhaps he wasn’t them ready but his discipline at the plate is so important in today’s game.

You are right that is not breaking news lol. It was a joke. To your point 2 of our outfielders are hitting below .250. At some point there needs to be a solution on how to get Anthony up to the big league squad. It’s going to have to be a trade that brings back major league talent and by that I mean pitching. We need another starter that can go more than 4 or 5 innings. This bullpen is going to be overworked by July with nothing to show for it. Something has to give, you can’t let the kid rot down there. Bring him up and let this group blend together. Hell, teach him
How to play 1st and let that play out. The kid is a monster and I have faith he will be better than Casas. Casas has been a major disappointment so far in his career, putting aside his injury

No reason to call up Anthony at this point. 2025 is a lost cause for Boston. 9.5 games out of 1st, 4 games out of the last Wild Card, 9 AL teams better than them right now.

With 98 games remaining, 4 games out is a lost cause? Huh?

They dont look good right now, but this is a young team, that could figure it out on a dime.. You don’t have to take first place or climb over 9 teams to win the WS. Make the playoffs and get hot at the right time, is all thats needed.

Yeah, 64 games is enough of a sample to determine that this Red Sox team isn’t winning anything this year. Shave some bad money off the books, keep the most important prospects down, and 2026 is likely to be a significantly better chance to win something than 2025.

However this is exactly when you bring your prospects up. If you are conceding the season to your point, which I respect. It’s a pretty good sample to say that they are a wild card team AT BEST. Shed some bad money off the books even if they get office supplies for guys like Story. You can probably get something decent by trading Refsnyder to a contender looking for a RH bat that crushes LH pitching. And as much as I hate to say it trading Duran would bring back useful players to BOS.

The white Sox are in a good spot for future success. They have nothing to lose, and really little to no choice, than to play prospects regularly. They can wait to watch and evaluate them for a year or three without outside pressure and/or expectations. They also have a crop of young, talented prospects ready to sink or swim in the big leagues.

If they evaluate and extend players in their system properly then add to the roster with mid level free agents at areas of need they can be a problem for the rest of the league in a few years.

I actually believe Palacios could be a decent player in the right situation. I’ve been following him for a few years now after seeing him in Spring Training in ’21 with the Blue Jays. His physical talents outweigh his major league performance so far, but he has played in mostly bad environments.

Pretty good day for a team that hasn’t had many good days in the last 2 or 3 years. I hope the best for Teel and the White Sox. I’ve been a Getz defender so far, I hope he got this one right.

I tend to have a black and white opinion on Getz so far. Teel is the centerpiece of the Crochet trade. Assuming rebuild 2.0 doesn’t go south I could see a scenario that Justin Ishbia may keep Getz as the GM (ditto for David Rubenstein when keeping Mike Elias.)

So far under Getz, the Sox have done a solid job with their pitchers. I’m not going to pretend to know how much of that credit goes to Getz, but pitching development is a rare and valuable trait to put on a resume.

He also seems to value things like defense which his predecessors had no use for.

Sox have been above average in developing pitchers and this season is no difference. Whether it’s homegrown, FA, acquired in trade, reclamation projects, etc.

Sox have excelled in developing pitchers, thanks to the combination of Brian Bannister and Ethan Katz. Starting staff coming along with two of the most exciting Lefty pitching prospects in Schulz and Smith on the way: all this while another half dozen promising pitchers led by Drew Thorpe are on the mend. Thankful they didn’t throw $50 mill on the likes of Giolito

Best part of the series as Leila mentioned on the score, the way the Sox did what teams are supposed to do when their rivals come in and hoist a bullpen game on you. Take offense and throttle them. Now do the Royals. Wish we could attend this weekend but graduations in the way, park should be electric for Teel’s debut. They should debut Florida Marlin colored jerseys for the occasion
