The Cubs are known to be looking far and wide for pitching upgrades at the deadline, with both long-term and short-term arms on the team’s radar. Two more names can be added to Chicago’s pitching search, as The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney writes that Braves closer Raisel Iglesias “is one of several options under consideration” for bullpen help, and the Cubs are also “very interested in” the possibility of trading for Nationals southpaw MacKenzie Gore.
Iglesias is the much more clear-cut trade candidate of the two, as Iglesias is a free agent at season’s end and the struggling Braves are nowhere near the playoff race. While Iglesias has a 5.09 ERA over 40 2/3 innings, his 3.00 SIERA is over two runs lower, and his strikeout/walk/hard-hit ball rates range from strongly above-average to elite. The veteran righty’s ERA reflects Iglesias’ tendency to get hit particularly hard when he does get hit, as 10 of his 23 earned runs allowed this season were contained within just three outings (April 21 against the Giants, June 5 against the Diamondbacks, and July 19 against the Yankees).
It is clear that Iglesias still has plenty left in the tank at age 35, and could be a big help to a team in need of high-leverage relievers. The bullpen isn’t quite as glaring a need as it seemed for the Cubs earlier in the season, yet the relief corps has been shaky over the last month, and adding Iglesias to the mix is an obvious improvement. Daniel Palencia has been a revelation as the Cubs’ closer, but given his lack of a proven track record, Chicago could prefer to have an established closer like Iglesias on hand.
Gore seems like a much more speculative pitcher on the wishlist. Nationals interim GM Mike DeBartolo recently said that his team was planning to retain its young core at the deadline, and made of point of including Gore in that cornerstone group, saying it is “not a focus of mine to move him.” There is seemingly no rush for DeBartolo or the organization to consider trading a pitcher who is arbitration-controlled through the 2027 season, and Mooney notes that an interim general manager like DeBartolo might not get the green light from ownership to pull the trigger on “a monumental decision” like moving a pitcher who has emerged as the ace of Washington’s rotation.
Even if the door may not be completely closed on the possibility of Gore being traded, the Nats’ asking price is unsurprisingly “viewed as sky-high,” Mooney writes. For two-plus years of a frontline starter, it is easy to picture Washington demanding multiple high-level prospects and at least one young player who is close to MLB-ready. As hefty as this ask might be, the Cubs are perhaps one of the few teams that has enough blue-chip minor league depth to make the Nationals at least consider dealing the 26-year-old All-Star.
Owen Caissie, for instance, is the type of elite prospect that would surely be a priority for the Nats in any Gore trade package. The outfielder is crushing Triple-A pitching for the second consecutive season and seems to have little left to prove in the minors, except Chicago’s outfield (and overall lineup) is deep enough that there’s no current place for Caissie to break into the Show. That could change quickly if Kyle Tucker departs in free agency this winter, higlighting Caissie’s importance as a long-term asset in Wrigleyville.
Mooney writes that the Cubs are very likely not going to offer Caissie in a trade for a rental player, and would only be inspired to move him at all if a controllable talent (like Gore) is on the table. In a particularly interesting detail, Mooney reports that Caissie would have been part of a proposed trade between the Cubs and Marlins for Jesus Luzardo this past offseason that was eventually scuttled when Chicago had concerns over Luzardo’s medicals. This provides some context for what it would take for the Cubs to move Caissie, yet his big Triple-A numbers in 2025 have probably made the team even more loath to part with the outfielder.
Cubs wish they could trade for gore but it would be a shock if the nats traded him
Nats would need another Juan Soto-like haul to move Gore.
Id trade Gore if I were the Nats. You can keep Caissie too. I think Wiggins, Ballesteros, Jonathan Long and Ivan Brethowr would do it.
Id do
Nationals offer
Finnegan RP
Gore SP
Cubs Offer
Wicks SP Was Top 100
Cassie Of Top 100
Long 1B Solid OBP guy
Rojas INF Top 100
Prolly be the best offer
It’d probably cost the Cubs their top four prospects to get Gore: Caissie, Ballesteros, Rojas, and Wiggins. Talk about wiping out the farm. Pass.
Gore has big upside but he’s not Crochet and while the price should be heavy, Only a certain pitcher in PA should command a Soto like package. That said deep farm clubs can get a deal done.
Swap Alcantara for Caissie and Wiggins for Wicks and I’d go for that as a Cubs fan. Sure, a hefty price to pay, but getting Gore and Finnegan in a deal should hurt.
That’s probably not close to enough
He is not Judge. But if the Nats believe it that is a steal
You know who looks like Aaron Judge? Ivan Brethowr. Judge didn’t start tanking the ball until his age 25 season. Brethowr is only 22 and has the plate discipline to be a good contact hitter, he could make the adjustment that Judge did as he ages into his mid twenties and could be a big time power hitter too.
Tauchman hitting got Judge to change his approach. Tauchmanhitting is on YouTube
They do not have the same load up
Nats would take a Garrett Crochet return for Gore as well.
Cubs have plenty of major league talent in AAA and nowhere to play next year. I think a deal could definitely be done.
Im inclined to agree with the author of this article, its very possible an interim GM just won’t be allowed to trade him even if the Cubs come up with a compelling offer.
Unless it’s at the direction of ownership which one would assume was involved when Soto was at the same place control wise.
They might let him pull the trigger. When he took over for Rizzo he spoke about how involved he was in the Soto trade. It’s also highly likely that he gets the interim tag removed. I suspect the trade deadline will have a lot of bearing on that.
Big if
But I would give Wiggins and Caissie. And a choice of off of the top 100 talent. Both players should become Major league players.
Ballesteros is a DH. Alcantara is too hot and cold. That can flame out in the majors.
Rojas I would want a pen arm also. You are giving up 3 MLB likely talents for 2+years. That is a bit much.
What an interesting idea. A brand new GM and a Lame Duck GM make a trade? Should be on wrestling. Lame Duck vs Newbie who’s gonna win? Probably both of them should be muzzled the rest of this year from trading big time prospects or talent.

You lose
Iglesias is good in save situations OnLy! for some reason lol….just remember that if you trade for him
It’s so weird I know it’s been a long time but he was like that with the Reds too😂
Gore isnt available and even if he was the Cubs dont need another lefty handed starter they need a righty.
Could see a Cassie for Cease type deal. Cassie instantly in LF. Cubs get Cease, who has substantial upside.
Aren’t you the Padres fans who complains the team isnt doing enough to win? The Padres aren’t trading away Cease.
Cubs are not trading Caissie for a rental.
Padres will only trade Cease for a player with MLB experience.
Why would the Padres trade Cease?
If they can make a deal for a solid position player with major league experience. Not sure there is another team with that surplus. They don’t need to subtract payroll, but they are allegedly limited as to how much they will add. Personally, I think Cease is 80% likely to be a Padre for rest of season.
Same reason they are rumored to trade Suarez
Those rumors are nonsense.
According to Mass Live the Padres offered Cease, Salas, and a prospect for Jarren Duran, but the Red Sox said no.
Not sure San Diego would move him for a prospect though, no matter how good.
They’re $6m under the tax that’s why they would trade cease to add offense. They likely can’t add without subtracting salary and Preller has a way of finding pitching when needed.
Says the all knowing Cardinals fan who seems to know more than very front office and media member paid to do the job.
You are right. Preller always seems to find pitching when the Madres need it. He also is a master at building his farm system on the fly. Preller always keeps things interesting.
Russell
That is the type of deal if the Padres trade Cease. I would be less surprised if they traded Suarez for a young pitcher.
Cease would be a good fit on the Cubs. Wicks, Ballesteros and Ivan Brethowr would be a nice return.
Padres could use Ballesteros, I doubt they want Wicks. I still think Cease will only be traded for a bat with MLB experience far exceeding that of Ballesteros.
Yanks are looking to trade Stanton, how about Cease, Dharvish and Matsui for Stanton and Cam Schlittler?
Moving Stanton opens up Judge at DH. That is the reality of this elbow issue, Judge at DH for all of ’26.
Dharvish and Matsui offsets Stanton’s salary in ’26 and ’27.
Big trade for both sides. Yanks get a pair of starters and the Padres get a nice MLB ready prospect and a big bat.
You’re god awful at trade proposals.
The money offsets, its viable.
Potentially solves a problem for the Yankees. Yankees add two veteran starters for a playoff run and a lefty bullpen arm sho could use a change of scenery.
Padres add a nice bat and a nice prospect.
I think the trade makes a lot of sense for both teams.
It makes sense for fans to understand no trade clauses.
who has a no trade clause, Stanton? Why would he not want to go to SoCal? He is getting old, played for the Yanks for many years, why wouldnt he want to play with Machado and Tatis knowing the situation that he is in with the Yankees? He’ll take the trade if its a go, if he doesnt, it was a good offer. Have fun on the bench in ’26.
Why wouldn’t he go? He’s older player with a house and family in New York. He’s never waiving that NTC
Jed will not trade Cassie to a team for a rentle not happening… Cease has 1 yr left and he isnt even pitching good
@toeinagain –
There is no chance that Chicago would give up Cassie for Cease as Cease is a free agent at the end of this season. They are not trading their best prospect for a rental; no matter who that rental is.
Boston just turned down an offer of Cease, Salas & another prospect for Jarren Duran from the Padres. Cease is having an off year too, which diminishes his value more on the trade market. I don’t believe Cease will be traded at all this year.
Yes, free MacKenzie Gore so he can play for a team with players that want to win. Clearly, the players are just there for the paycheck.
Old York, maybe they just don’t have the capacity to be any better. They are maxed out on their skillsets. They are maxed out on their brain power.
Except all of them (Tatis, Boegarts, Cronenworth, Cease, etc. have all performed better in the past).
@Ignorant Son-of-a-b
I understand. I try to be better as a Walmart greeter but I just can’t get to that next level for greeters.
Same. Stuck at the 10pm to 6:00am shift. There is not even anybody to greet!
Didnt the covid threat end like 3 years ago? So why didnt the world return to “business as normal”… move along folks nothing to see here its 11 pm come back at 7 am
“The veteran righty’s ERA reflects Iglesias’ tendency to get hit particularly hard when he does get hit, as 10 of his 23 earned runs allowed this season were contained within just three outings (April 21 against the Giants, June 5 against the Diamondbacks, and July 19 against the Yankees).”
Correct. If a new pitching coach make an adjustment that keeps him from throwing the occasional BP change up, he can still help you win.
His slider has been much worse than his changeup this season, as it’s one of the worst pitches in baseball by RV/100
Empty the farm for Gore.
@Holee Cow
Agreed! You can always train more guys. Plus, Nationals don’t have an interest in winning anymore. They’ve turned back into the Montreal Expos who just developed talent for the rest of the league.
Palencia with a “P”. …and a save today!
Iglesias as the 8tb inning guy to get it to El Dragòn. Just get a deal done Jed. Stop waiting for the last second deals. Biggest series of the year coming up. 3 at Wrigley North
I bet its packed with Brewers fans fella .
Nah Cubs at Brewers is always 5 to 1 Cubs to Brewers fans ratio. At the very least
I say El Paso.
Gore would be worth trading some major prospects for. I say thanks but no thanks to Iglesias. There are better options out there for relief help. I would love to be able to get Bender but Miami is hanging in there. But there are other guys to get. Doesn’t have to be a closer type, Just somebody reliable.
@unclemike. Jansen shouldn’t be that much. Probably something like estevez last year. Probably might sting a bit in the long term, but he’s a decent BP piece.
Rex- No thanks to Jansen either. 2 months of Jansen isn’t worth anything to me really. There will be better options out there. In fact the best option might be just to let Hodge heal up and get his mojo back and wait for Assad. They just brought Hodge back too fast last time before he was ready.
I agree with Mike here. While a storied career, in 2025, Iglesias sucks even more in non-save situations. My picks are Anthony Bender and Dennis Santana as bullpen adds. No trades of Caisie or Alcantara without a Tucker extension first and we all know that is unlikely. Prefer to keep Ballesteros, too, as a DH if Suzuki is gone.
Swing and miss type stuff. Reliable arm. El Dragòn has been solid since taking over for Stressly Pressly.
Aloha Uncle, I wouldn’t give up Caissie for any of the controllable pitchers considered except for Gore. Keller has a high salary the next so many years and I’m sure the pirates would want his whole salary absorbed. If Jed goes the way of rentals like Lugo, Gallen, Morton there better be no top prospects going for 2+months of rentals. What concerns me is that hoyer may overpay for lesser quality arms, then walk away at the end of the season with a depleted farm system. Hoping for the best. BTW I wonder if Assad could slot into the BP unpon his return? Mahalo and let’s not forget, Tucker may not come back so do they risk trading Caissie away?
Aloha to you. I’ve already stated my thoughts about Caissie and that’s that if it were up to me Caissie would go nowhere unless they had Tuckers signature on an extension. But a few other prospects might be used for Gore. Just kind of curious how Hoyer has one LH power bat in the whole organization but wants a whole staff of LH starting pitchers. But everyone knows how I feel about Hoyer and his ability to plan and think ahead. Plus I don’t think Lugo is a rental as I think he has team options but I’m not positive. But I’m waiting to be disappointed again at the deadline by Lame Duck Jed.
More like his inability to plan and think ahead.
My contempt has been so widespread I thought everyone knows how I feel about him. They bash me about it constantly. I was totally amazed he had the balls to throw Brown out there again. It showed a surprising amount of guts that I didn’t think he owned. And they got rewarded and got a win heading into the Brewers series. And gave guys an extra day of rest. Thought Brown was headed for Cubs prospect purgatory like so many.
Aloha uncle, good point. I’ve loved Gore since his days as a prospect with San Diego. But now as you pointed out the staff has including Steele, 3 lefties unless they have a plan to move one of them? Another pitcher I really like, a righty, is Joe Ryan but Minnesota would want a huge return for him. I also agree with you, if the organization has Tucker’s signed commitment before the deadline, that’s one thing, if not then we assume he’s going into free agency and Jed better not trade Caissie. I’m with you, preparing to be disappointed by hoyer giving away our top young talent for rentals or mediocre controllable arms. We’ll see what happens in 3-4 days. Hang in there. Mahalo and go Cubs!
Palacios is fantastic to close, so for Cub fans sake, hope they don’t mess with bringing a 2nd closer to look over his shoulder.. You don’t need to be a savvy veteran to lock down a playoff game. It’s more about confidence………Iglesias would be a rearview mirror acquisition. OTOH-them going after Bender from the Marlins or a solid rental bridge makes perfect sense.
Gore would be bold move, yet say good night to Caissie as headliner and perhaps 1 of the SP prospects not named Horton to get that over the finish line.
The Cubs have Cassie, Moises Ballesteros, and Jonathan Long at AAA and a couple of promising starting pitchers at lower levels. They can also throw in someone like Jordan Wicks to soak up major league innings for the rest of the year.
Two of their three AAA guys mentioned above, a promising AA/A starter, a middle infield prospect in the 15-30 range, and a filler arm for the rest of the season. The Cubs can overwhelm the Nationals here.
Ballesteros, wiggins and hicks is a good package. Maybe a little money and or lesser prospects to haggle over.
Sitting here in Durham watching Matt Mervis be his AAAA self for visiting Jacksonville, I’d be willing to toss in Long as well. Long might become Bill Buckner, but he might also become Julio Zuleta. Flags fly forever, and Gore would give them a strong 2026 rotation as well.
They have Caissie. Not Cassie and he should not be traded unless the Cubs are all in 1000% to re-sign Tucker. The worst part is if the Cubs manage to re-sign Tucker they still lose Caissie. If they trade ONKC and then Tucker walks not only should Jed be fired on the spot in a very public setting like Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner in the 70s and again in the 80s.
Yeah, spell check got me. I don’t think they will trade him. They have enough other pieces that I hope the only way they trade him is if it’s part of a deal for both Suarez and Kelly.
Sorry for being grammar police. I usually just suggest to mention Caissie to just abbreviate his initials and say ONKC. Spell check gets a lot of people but also some don’t even know about the extra I in his name.
Hey Brick, uncle:
Just my 2 cents: I don’t see anyway Tucker is resigned. IMO he’s gone from having a ‘great season’, to having a ‘very good season’. And if I’m Ricketts, there’s no way I’m shelling out over $30M per year for Tucker on a contract for more than 4 years. But that’s just me.
I’d like Caissie kept to play RF next season. And I’d play Seiya in LF. This offseason I’d tell Happ, you’re going to be a part time player, or agree to be traded. I believe a team like the Pirates or Reds would love to get Happ.
At this time, I would only be willing to use people like Ballesteros, Triantos and maybe Long – to get my hands on pitching help.
I think the complicating thing with Happ is that he is the player rep. He’s going to want new money to accept a trade, unless it’s to the Yankees to play LF. And he’s at an age where just tacking on one more year might be a negative.
With Ballesteros, if they don’t think he can be a starting catcher defensively, best to trade him now while other teams may perceive upside. I am generally down on the bat of most of the remaining position player prospects, especially at Knoxville and below.
Happ already loves hitting in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. I don’t think it’s a smart move to trade him within the division. I know he wouldn’t like the Yankees since he loves to golf on an off day on the road and according Jameson Tallion there’s not a lot players that go golfing. If you trade him to SF or Seattle I think he would succeed there.
Bone- I suggested that very thing about Happ about a month ago. But it would take somebody who has a pair and if Hoyer stays it’s not gonna happen. When I look at Callis and friends horrible top 30 prospects list it’s so out of whack it’s not funny. I mean it has guys like Cowles, Lovich, Southsienne, Melendez and a bunch of 16 year old SS’s and leaves out guys like Flanagan, Schlaffer, Armstrong and Santos. They finally added Sanders and Gallagher but Sanders is way too low. It’s a bad list. The Cubs have way more pitching than people think they do but they have a FO that doesn’t reward them with Major League opportunity. Now they have Noland and Sanders pitching out of the bullpen while Puss Ballers like Turnbull and Maeda make starts. I’ll never understand the Hoyer FA signing process if I live to be 2 million years old. Turnbull gave up 6 runs before the National Anthem stopped playing tonight. Brutal.
Mike – CC already moved Happ down in the order, probably permanently. If they pick up a quality RH bench OF at the deadline to replace Brujan, then I won’t be surprised if Happ starts getting a day off against LHP.
Regardless of what happens with Tucker vs. ONKC this winter, I think that CC will expect a veteran short side platoon LF for next season, if not for this Wednesday.
Happ needs to get the Heyward treatment. Seiya in left and Happ off the bench/defensive replacement. Go trade for a bat. Yandy Diaz or Suarez would make this lineup deadly.
Braves better freaking pull the trigger on a deal for RI. I mean it would be organizational malpractice if he isn’t traded. And it better not be for strictly cash and a ptbnl. That would be such a corporate move if they did. Trade for any prospect they are willing to give, eat the cash, and hopefully that kid can be packaged in another deal this offseason to retool for next year. We need as close as a cleaning of house as we can make. I’d trade him, Ozuna, Bummer, Johnson, Montero, and Ozzie so fast your head would spin. Retool
No to RI for the Cubs. Just too unpredictable. Blew a game last night. They can do better.
Jesus Luzardo and Mick Abel for Owen Caissie.
Luzardo and Max Keplar for Owen Cassie might work.
Luzardo is totally inconsistent and has become unreliable. Maybe it’s in his head? But I’m not taking that chance.
Really hope Gore doesn’t end up on the Cubs or Dodgers. Have a hard time believing they would even trade him.
Jed won’t do anything but a band aid approach. Is Tucker still getting $500-600 on open market.? Heck no!
If Cassie is such a sure thing, why not trade Tucker for an #1 starter?
No team’s trading a “#1 starter” for 2 months of Tucker.
Gore is wishful thinking, and there’s better options than Iglesias. Need some bullpen help to get through the season.
Somebody put out an APB for Alan.
It has been a troll-less hour.
Oh forgot it, he’s probably out searching for a reason that the better team, White Sox, only went 1-5 against the lesser team, Cubs.
He’ll be back to his basement sooner than we need.
You mean Professor Alan with the Doctorate level responses to everything? You’d think the Cubs were 59-61 based on his responses
Sure, keep trading prospects for 1 yr rentals and then give mopes like Happ extensions. What a stupid organization starting with ownership.
The no trade clauses for both Happ and Suzuki are what baffles me. We drafted two outfielders with our first two picks so it seems very likely Alcantara &/or Cassie will be casualties of this playoff run if they go all in at the deadline.
All theses so called rumors about the Cubs being interested in moving Owen Cassie -who is MLB ready today – to these stuck in mud so-called rebuilding/retooling teams who are just so in love with their “best” players sounds like a desperate cry for help from those clubs. If the Nats love Gore then they should keep him and finish much in the same place next year as they did this year. The Pirates keep clutching Keller to their breast like his 6-10 record makes him Tom Seaver. I think all these losing teams want Owen Cassie. They’re floating all these rumors. They should just come out and say they want Cassie and move things along. The Cubs have plenty of SP rental options without giving up Cassie.
Owen Cassie -who is MLB ready today
======================
Likely not. He has roughly 200K/600ABs in AAA. Even with his power, he needs more development.
Open speculation on Gore is crazy. I heard the Blue Jays are interested in Aaron Judge.
How about just Iglesias for Caissie’s old gym bag and 2 used baseballs
I find it interesting when teams hoard their prospects instead of going after the moment at hand. These prospects are not prospects after they are in a organization after 6 years they can become FA’s.
When you have a chance to finish off a great season the flag flies longer than a prospect will be a prospect. If you have a shot at a proven Major League bat or a proven Major League starter or stopper. and yet they have second thoughts on acquiring a solid piece to the lineup or pitching staff, but yet they say we will not give up a unproven prospect yet to swing a bat or pitch in the majors, then lose the moment for that special season, again a championship flag flies longer than a prospect that may not fulfill that so called promise.
a championship flag flies
===========================
Of course. If you are guaranteed a WSC, then you could trade anyone. But there might be 17-18 teams vying for a playoff spot, and almost half won’t make the playoffs.
6 of the remaining 12 need to win 4 series, which is at least a 16-1 shot. Nothing wrong with adding, but trading away a large chunk of your future has doomed a lot more teams than it has helped.
The Cubs have the prospects. It is a question do they fit the National’s needs. I am assuming it would be Horton, Caissie or Alcantra, and Rojas.
Cubs Fan
Im not trading Caissie cause I know Cubs arent resigning Tucker
They need to aim lower but knowing Hoyer and hes expiring contract hes going to get desperate.
If im Cubs I dangle Tucker
Someone would be happy to overpay for him
Sale probably wants to stay in Atlanta
What is up with Luke Little? The only pitcher I would go after is Cease.
Trade Gore to Chicago. The reason for the trade is Scott Boras. Washington is staying away from Boras’s clients. (hence the draft plus Harper, Soto, and Strasburg). Gore is a Boras client. Gore would be considered a short term player because they will not be able to pay Gore Boras’s asking price. Makes sense to trade him now while he is healthy.. Throw Finnegan in the deal also
Unpopular opinion, I don’t think this is the year to sell the farm to make a run at the WS. I think they can keep Cassie and still add pieces enough to be in the mix. They’re probably not re-signing Tucker so you need Cassie. I don’t see the dominant TOR starter on the market that puts them over the top unless it’s someone like Skenes who isn’t available. King & Cease are available as FA in the offseason and you don’t lose a top 5 prospect. Schwarber is a FA too. Hopefully we’ll have a rehabbed Steele and healthy Horton back. I say add what you can without selling the farm and make the playoffs and see what happens and then push all in next year. If you sign Tucker, awesome. Then Cassie is on the table and you can go get another bat or starter.
There is panic to push all in because Hoyers jobs on the line and everyone and their mother knows tucker is probably gone. Half the cubs roster is only under contract through 2026. This is definitely the year to go for it. I wouldn’t trade any top prospects for rentals. Gore or Cabrera I’d make anyone available. The Cubs did just draft 20 outfielders.
Seiya, Happ, Nico, Shota, Tallion and Boyd are FA after next season. Gotta believe they’ll extend at least Nico & Shota. I’d feel better about pushing all in this season if there was names available that excite me, maybe they’re working on something under the radar. Suarez maybe? But Shaw seems to have found something since the break. Feel like this season’s deadline list is full of “eh” or guys you can get in December. With all those FA after next season it feels like this offseason is when you break the bank. Maybe that’s a good omen they can sign Tucker and others knowing a lot of money comes off the books soon.
Led Hoyer
There is panic to push all in because Hoyers jobs on the line
=======================
The Cubs have the #3 record in BB, the #1 overall run differential, and a good farm.
Why would Hoyer’s job be in danger?
And with that, the Cubs just extended Hoyer.
This just feels less and less like the year to push all in. I know the current record and standings, but I’m also seeing the bats go flat, PCA’s expected regression, a pitching staff that seems tired already. Happ just hasn’t gotten going at all, Seiya has chilled, Dansby can’t hit if there are runners on base, and the catcher position – once a bonus spot – is getting weaker but hopeful with Amaya’s rehab. Even the defense has slipped. One move at the break isn’t going to get it done. The bench is another concern – I can’t watch one more Brujan start anywhere. Guess we’ll see in the next 48 hours now that Jed has his extension – I’m guessing that makes him more conservative.
Only guaranteed year with a t10 player in Tucker who you already paid a lot for… yes it’s a push in chips season
The Nats would probably want Caissie and Wiggins for Gore, and that’s a definite no.
Cubs fans, we have to stop kidding ourselves that any other team wants to trade for Wicks. He is a nonentity.
Rule of thumb: If there is a guy on the team you root for who you would not mind being traded, that’s a guy who no other team wants to trade for. The other GMs are at least as smart as you are. (Next you’ll be offering Pearson and Neely and The Man Without a Face, Hollowell.)
I think it’s conceivable that some team would have a mild interest in Ben Brown. If so, I’d drive him there.
I’d trade any of Cubs prospects for Gore. They haven’t had a stellar track record of developing pitchers and they just drafted 20 outfielders. Caissie, Alcantara, Ballesteros, long, have no where to play next year. They are all major league ready. If Tucker walks they are still going to have PCA, Seiya and Happ plus a bunch of drafted college outfielders. 2026 rotation Boyd/Shota/Gore/Steele/Horton would be pretty nasty.
Not exactly sure why you keep saying the Cubs drafted 20 OF’s when 13 of their picks were P’s but OK. While it’s true that 4 of the first 6 were either LH or SH OF’s there was a definite shortage of LH power all through the Minors.
I was being half sarcastic. I obviously I know they didn’t draft 20 outfielders but they did draft a lot and did it at the top of the draft. The point was Owen Caissie, Alcantara, Ballesteros (dh) are expendable and blocked and reinforcements for 2026 and beyond have been drafted.
As a Nats fan, I don’t want to give up Gore now. Maybe at the 2026 trade deadline, if necessary.
If the return is right, why not?
The Nats are not going to win the division in 2026, maybe in 2027 if they get extremely lucky. If Nats get prospects that can help them in their next pursuit of the WS, they should be open to trading Gore.
However, I don’t think the Nats need another OF when they already have a logjam there. I would ask for top SP and C prospects that are MLB-ready.
There is much more downside to holding onto him than trading him. All he has to in his next start is to have trouble warming up, and 25% of his value is gone. And TJS and his value is 80% gone.
What’s the upside to holding on to him?
The Cubs non-tendered Kyle Schwarber.
Who likely closes for ATL, Johnson or Lee? If Iglesias is traded
