Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave through Aug. 31 as part of Major League Baseball’s ongoing investigation into sports betting, per a league announcement. Clase’s teammate, Luis Ortiz, was the first (and thus far only other) player placed on leave under the ongoing investigation. Clase will continue to be paid while the league looks into any alleged wrongdoing. He will not count against the team’s 40-man roster while on leave. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that Clase was being placed on leave shortly prior to MLB’s formal announcement.
“The Guardians have been notified by Major League Baseball that as part of their sports betting investigation Emmanuel Clase has been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave per an agreement with the Players Association,” the team said Monday in a statement. “We have been informed that no additional players or Club personnel are expected to be impacted. The Guardians are not permitted to comment further at this time, and will respect the league’s confidential investigative process as we continue to fully cooperate.”
Clase’s name had surfaced as a potential trade candidate this summer, as several contenders around the league have been weighing a run at impact relievers with multiple years of club control remaining. A trade wasn’t seen as likely, given Clase’s below-market contract and general track record of excellence.
The 27-year-old Clase has pitched 47 1/3 innings of 3.23 ERA ball this year — a “down” season relative to his lofty standards. The right-hander boasts a superlative 1.84 ERA in 336 2/3 innings over the past five seasons. He’s saved 181 games, fanned just under one-quarter of his opponents, issued walks at a tiny 4.8% clip and piled up grounders at an elite 58.5% rate along the way.
Clase signed a five-year, $20MM extension back in April 2022. He’s being paid just $4.5MM this year and has a $6MM guarantee for the 2026 season under the terms of that contract. His extension included a pair of $10MM club options for the 2027-28 seasons, though he’s already maxed out a series of escalators that have pushed the value of each of those options up to $13MM apiece.
The news comes as a notable blow to the Guardians’ already-thin postseason hopes. Cleveland is eight games back of the division-leading Tigers and 3.5 games out of an AL Wild Card spot (with three teams to leapfrog). They were already without Ortiz, their fourth starter, due to this ongoing investigation and had lost another rotation member, Ben Lively, to Tommy John surgery. Former AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber was targeting a June return but has yet to pitch in the majors after a setback in recovery from his own Tommy John procedure — though he’s on a rehab assignment and on the cusp of a return to the majors.
[Related: Cleveland Guardians Trade Deadline Outlook]
Clase’s bullpen-mate, Cade Smith, figures to take over closing duties for the time being. He’s arguably an even better reliever at this point than Clase is, and Smith himself has received plenty of attention on the summer trade market. As with Clase, a deal has been seen as unlikely, given the 26-year-old righty’s four-plus seasons of remaining club control.
Depending on how one chooses to view the Clase suspension, it could make a Smith trade more or less likely. Smith now becomes an even more focal point in the bullpen and all the more critical to whatever playoff hopes Cleveland has left. At the same time, losing Clase further dampens those postseason odds and could make the Guards more willing to turn the page on the 2025 season and focus more on the future. Smith should be an integral part of that future, but he could also net a legitimate prospect haul if moved in the next three days, potentially adding multiple long-term contributors to the Guards in 2026 and beyond.
Quick- trade him!
His value just went like poof
The guy who signed with a company where you can bet on his career instead of with an agent like a normal person (yes, you could buy “shares” of Clase) got caught with gambling??? Huge surprise
Dodgers offer Shohei’s interpreter for Clase. Who says no???
… Let’s include the Astros as part of the offer so that they add to it a trash cam… 😂
Considering that Ippei is in prison for the crimes that he committed, the Guardians are going to have to wait.
What crimes? That was 100% Ohtani!!
You, of course, know more than MLB and the FBI. Congratulations
The same FBI that plotted a fake kidnapping of Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer? Don’t be naïve.
Hey, if you can’t trust the alphabet agencies then who CAN you trust?
@freddiemeetgibby, you bought that? You really think a guy so well managed, that thinks about every decision so carefully did not noticed $14-16MILLION missing? He must be the biggest dumb jock ever.
I understand the FBI agents were also eating cats and dogs. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Your tin foil baseball cap is pretty cool, bro. Where’d you get it, in the Gas Lamp District, or the China Basin? Perhaps the storm drain that runs through the Big A?
Nnonsense
If only Clase had an interpreter.
Depends on how much of Clase’s salary can be deferred.
We need to defer our judgment.
Just as bad as when the Pirates tried to trade Felipe Vazquez in 2019
Big difference between being a gambler and a pedo.
jasonthebuc: Unless you’re Pete Rose, who was both.
That girl looked and told me she was 18.
Indeed
Lady Karma doesn’t forget an address…. This is what they get for changing their team name from the Indians.
Good.
Yes, that is the only explanation for this.
The Pedophile-in-Chief was way ahead of the curve on this
I’m so excited to go to a baseball website and read peoples political commentary. Thank you all for explaining you’re a liberal or conservative because that helps me understand baseball better!!!
cartography ponderance, new here???
Not to worry. They’re being sued to change it back, bigly.
The guy who signed with a company where you can bet on his career instead of with an agent like a normal person (yes, you could buy “shares” of Clase) got caught with gambling??? Huge surprise
The PED suspension and now this. Isn’t that effectively a No-Trade Cla(u)se?
Well now that he has some time off he should take up gambling as a hobby.
Oh boy, guess that why he’s been so “bad” this year
So much for a Clase trade. Huge news.
Wonder what would have happened if this had come out shortly after he was traded (if he got traded). That could have really screwed up some poor team that gave up assets for him.
Also, he’s already been suspended for PED’s and now possibly getting caught up with gambling issues. If he threw in a DV charge, he could go for the career triple crown in douchebaggery.
Trading for relief pitching is always a gamble…
Bada ba da ta tizzzz….
10/10
In relief pitching and gambling it is always best to bet on yourself.
Try the veal
@Canuck Good question but my guess would be that would different than say the Colin Rea injury/trade situation from a few years back. I don’t think the team that would have traded for Clase under that hypothetical would have the argument that the Guardians should have known about any sort of gambling situation like they should with an injury.
Definitely an interesting hypothetical though…I’m curious what if any league-wide stipulations exist for trades as it relates to worst-case type scenarios like that.
I wouldn’t be surprised if MLB gave a heads up to the team, & to not speak until given authorization to…
I absolutely think they could have voided the trade in that circumstance.
Canuckleball: He can go pitch in relief of Trevor Bauer.
CarverAndrews: Trading for any player is a gamble, whether or not it’s Oscar Gamble.
Yes sir! This puts a huge wrinkle to all those teams needing a closer.
Smokey and Craig gif Daaaaammnnnn!!
Wow
Kinda sick of this BS. Why haven’t they resolved the Ortiz situation yet? That one should have been pretty cut and dry. This is only going to get worse.
Maybe they are doing a broader, systemic investigation into Cleveland’s staff to better understand the context of Ortiz’s actions? I assume Ortiz’s situation led to Clase’s investigation (maybe he rolled on him?).
I think it’s a solid guess on the roll. A lifetime suspension unless you give us names.
Sick of what “BS” exactly? It’s an ongoing investigation. Per the MLBPA Union contract, paid administrative leave is the only action that can be taken until the investigation is concluded.
Sick of gambling being so pervasive that we even have incidents like this. At least that’s me. To all the gambling lovers, my apologies.
It does seem extremely problematic and hypocritical to punish all these players when every pregame show gives out all the gambling odds. and advertises betting sites.
The Apple telecast has odds constantly during the game and updates with each pitch.
It’s not hypocritical to tell the people who determine the outcome not to falsify the outcome.
@TheGr8One: I regret that I have but one thumbs up to give to this common sense driven statement. Guess I could’ve just said “You betcha!”
So unfair how everybody picks on Congress for insider trading when everybody else can buy and sell stocks
Plus, there are commercials and ads for it so what’s the big deal?
I been saying it all along. Promoting and advertising all the gambling bets pre-game, during the games and post game is going to be the downfall of the MLB. For the bettors are people (and players) who know and love the sport. You are not going to find Harry Potter or bookworm nerd types betting on baseball. Eventually, there will not be any players left to play baseball, because they will get involved and hooked into the betting frenzy sooner or later.
Same can be said about alcohol and drugs.
For all the money they make, they have one simple rule and, if the gambling “frenzy’ is too much, too bad.
Again, Congress has inside information and people rightfully complain that they become multi-millionaires abusing that information.
How is this any different?
Yes it is going to get worse; as it always does with sports gambling
@CleaverGreene
Yup….where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
Guessing that Ortiz investigation led to Clase.
Hmmmm. Where there’s smoke…
Hmmmm. Clase already has a PEDS violation.
Hmmmm. Keep Clase off my team.
It’s not what you know but what you can prove. Was there an unusual spike in betting on a unusual pitch sure. But can they suspend him without evidence? If he was discreet and got paid in cash or whoever made bet is what can you do?
A man placed 37 separate bets on one specific pitch from one specific man on a specific inning. That meets my level of proof of guilt.
Union attorneys probably want more than that. Dunno how they stand on gambling though.
Union attorneys can hash that out now but it’s definitely enough to put him on leave.
This cannot be good. More and more players are getting caught with this.
Does he have an interpreter
If he does, make the trade while the value is low… lmao 😆 can you trade a suspended player out for gambling 🤔
Yes on coaching staff.
Explains his “struggles” earlier

If you have a gambling problem please call 1-800-GAMBLER
@FrostymaOO7, Hello, this is Shohei speaking, how can I help you?
Your mother’s pin# might be your birth date.
That’s one way to avoid a trade to
Milwaukee.
Ortiz and clase??? Who else on Cleveland is doing it???
Chief Wahoo, though I’m not sure they can take action against him anymore.
Don’t stop with just Cleveland.
Too bad he doesn’t have an interpreter.
MLB gets in bed with the betting websites then acts shocked when players get wrapped up in the betting.
They’re not shocked. They’re ambivalent. These players are replaceable. Play by the rules.
@BBB, that’s right. Hire an interpreter.
So your hypothesis is that players wouldn’t gamble on BB if the MLB didn’t accept advertising revenue?
RIP
This and PED suspension early career? Dudes done
Nah. Unless he gets something horrific such as a lifetime ban, he’ll be back and he’ll still be good.
MLB proved with Pete Rose that they really don’t care about players who gamble. He’ll be fined/suspended and probably forced into gambling rehab 🤣
MLB banned Pete Rose for life. What are you talking about?
Did he bet on himself beating the royals in the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday?
Are they allowed to place bets on their fantasy baseball teams?
What are the odds he’s guilty?
Hopefully really low I never want see an article like this but I also want to make sure that he gets what he deserves if he actually gambled on games. It’s so disheartening to see a great player with a bright future make stupid decisions like this.
Deep sea that’s an A+ comment
Can you bet on that?
Monsta…Underrated comment.
@deepsea, Ippei said he’d take that bet for Mr. Oh.
If he’s already on the exempt list there’s fire to the smoke.
Just blame the “translator.” Works for the Dodgers stars
Yea Major League Baseball is a joke, Shohei Ohtani gets away with it, but the best closer in the game is on the restricted list.
Gets away with what, being a victim? Are you saying you have inside knowledge that the FBI and MLB didn’t have?
@freddie, lol at you thinking Sho was a victim.
Everyone that understands sports betting ( on credit), knows there is absolutely no chance that Ohtani didn’t place all of the bets. Ohtani met face to face with Bowyer, in order to open the account and arrange a payment schedule ( settle figure). This is 100% common knowledge in the sports betting industry. The “general public”, may not understand this, and you obviously fit into that category!!
If Ohtani is a degenerate gambler, he’ll get caught at some point. You don’t just go cold turkey….
Complete fabrication just to smear Ohtani.
Ohtani was a victim, you can even hear one of the phone calls where Ohtani’s interpreter pretended to be Ohtani trying to transfer $200,000 out of Ohtani’s account into his. Hence why the interpreter plead guilty and is in jail.
Yep! MLB and owners will cover up anything that makes money for them… sports betting, steroids, Ohtani…. Would you like anymore?
Regardless of whether Ohtani was actually innocent, there does seem to be a significant double-standard here. Ohtani is the only person out of all these recent investigations to continue playing on the field while the investigation was ongoing. It does seem a bit perplexing.
That’s completely false you think the Clase investigation started today? He was playing during the investigation I promise you that. He was removed when said investigation brought enough to remove him. Someone earlier said the guardians probably had a deal in place for him and MLB had to bring it to light. I see that as a very possible scenario
That’s speculation, but you could be correct. If that *is* the case, MLB should clearly delineate those circumstances. And there appeared to be a lot of evidence against Ohtani initially.
For this to be the same team as Ortiz who’s been under investigation for weeks I’m willing to bet Clase came up in that investigation.
Especially when the translator is guilty.
Ye olde tip of the iceberg
Now taking bets on wether or not he will be found guilty
Sponsored by FanDuel Network.
Clase too big a name to get a lifetime ban? League’s going to have to make an example of someone, here.
I believe Trevor Bauer and Luis Ortiz are on the similarly-phrased “administrative leave”
As someone else has noted nearby, this could be just be the tip of the iceberg.
Trevor Bauer got a 194 game suspension and is eligible to play.
Yes, and Bauer started on “administrative leave” first, before the suspension.
Nobody’s too big of a name to be banned for gambling!
Though some may disagree with that…. interpretation.
It depends on the interpreter.
Ohtani was too big!! It is a 100% certainty that he made all of those bets, through the interpreter. I worked in the offshore industry for many years. There is zero possibility that anyone other than Ohtani was extended that kind of credit, to make those bets. The bookmaker, met with Ohtani personally to set up the account and payment details. That is what transpired.
Clapton sucks. Ohtani is God….
baseballhistory, you using words like 100% and saying there’s zero possibility almost makes your statement unreadable. Those are your opinions. While I tend to share the same opinion as you, neither of us know the truth, so saying something so matter of fact yet not knowing the details is foolish
Most people are always going to believe the official narrative of everything.
@baseballhistory, thank you!
Yes, because life is just one big conspiracy theory….
@One time, I understand what you’re saying but, what are the odds (pun intended) a bookie gives an interpreter that much credit?
Well if you’re always paying your gambling debts….
“It is a 100% certainty that he made all of those bets”
It is if you don’t bother to look at the evidence.
“what are the odds (pun intended) a bookie gives an interpreter that much credit?”
You’re ignoring what the facts are because you can’t wrap your head around the situation. Stop ignoring what we know be to true in favor of what you *think* SHOULD be true. Stick with the evidence.
I do know the truth. I worked in the offshore sports betting industry for close to 20 years. I never met Bowyer personally, but I worked for guys that knew him well ( Southern California). In order to take that kind of action on credit, Bowyer would have met with Ohtani personally ( not on the phone), to set up the account and payment details. This is an opinion based on 50 years of first hand knowledge ( both sides), of how sports betting ( credit) accounts are set up. There is a per game limit, weekly cap, and a settle figure. This applies for the smallest bettors, to the “whales”!! You can choose to believe whatever makes you happy, but this is what happened!!
If Ohtani is a degenerate gambler and “too big”, why did the government or MLB even allow it to come out? They could’ve easily not investigated and swept it under the rug and no one would be the wiser….
@Vegas, Yes, and there were WMDs in Iraq. From the school of Kierkegaard, and common sense.
And repetitive.
There is zero possibility that anyone other than Ohtani was extended that kind of credit
=========================
It also would require Ohtani not opening a bank statement for 26 months. Even a single look at any of the statements and he’d have noticed transfers of $25k, $50k, $100k, etc.
Well if you’re always paying your gambling debts….
=========================
No one off $16M, let alone the $40M he was alleged to have run up if you $200k a year.. Even without taxes or spending a single dollar on living expenses, it is still 200 years of gambling debt.
Plenty of entertainers making hundreds of millions just focus on their craft and let other people handle (or mishandle) their finances. It’s not like they care about living within a budget. Only regular people and businessmen care about those mundane issues….
You don’t understand how betting on credit works. Bowyer never had Ohtani for a client before. A”track record”, reputation, if there is one, is important. What is a 100% must, is a face to face meeting with the “new client”, in order to open a credit account. There are “no exceptions”, with this kind of credit extended!!
How is Ohtani going to keep getting away with it? Did he just go cold turkey? Please….
But why does the government and MLB even let Ohtani get implicated if it’s just going to be swept under the rug anyway? They just create this whole ruse with help from the interpreter? Fabricate interpreter bank account transfer phone calls? Seems like alotta work when they could just not let it out into the media. Or maybe Ohtani isn’t a degenerate gambler….
Also, why dint Bowyer snitch on Ohtani? Really….
No they couldn’t. The FBI was investigating Bowyer ( bookmaker), and the Ohtani betting came up in that investigation. You should know more about the subject you are commenting on!!
Bowyer was offered a deal, just like the interpreter. The FBI, and MLB got together and put this “story” out. Bowyer is doing much less federal time, than he would have, if he didn’t, “play ball”!!
This is too complicated a topic for you to understand sufficiently to have an informed opinion on.
The_M4N lol I’ll call my guy and get a number
baseballhistory, were you physically present when this stuff was going down? You can’t factually prove anything you’re saying but you’re using your opinion (your words) to try and create “facts” that you think happened. Words matter lol
@ deepsea, Well played.
Pete Rose would agree with that…”nobody is too big of a name to be banned for gambling.” But Ieppi would disagree…he saw it first hand.
“Overpaid for what they provide to society”. What a moronic statement.
I think your question is backwards. Is Clase too small a name to get a lifetime ban. Hes no Pete Rose.
More than a few GMs just expressed a sigh of relief after making an offer for Clase. How brutal that would be, to trade for him and he immediately gets suspended.
Wonder if the league was scrambling to get this out before the deadline.
Another underrated comment. You’re on fire.
I’d make a modest wager (I’d need some slight odds) that a trade was already consummated, and that the MLB was forced to disclose this. I think Manfred has done a great job, but I don’t doubt that he’d have covered this up if he could.
I find it preposterous that the league has implemented a process of fake gambling suspensions for when its “top” pitchers have a down year. Inexcusable!
The suspensions to Cleveland pitchers is because too many gamblers bet that the Guardians would make the playoffs.
That makes no sense. The top pitchers get paid 8 figure salaries. They aren’t throwing games for a $10,000 pay day.
Clase closed.
I will see you one Clase move!
Somewhere Jose Altuve is banging on a trash can lid!
Banging on a trash can.
Drumming on a streetlight.
Strumming on my banjo.
Think Big. Think Big, Think Big, Think Big.
And having another fine season while you type crap into your phone.
The temptation to do this will only worsen if a salary cap is instituted in new CBA.
Please.
Please what?
Please use your brain.
A salary cap is not going to impoverish MLB players.
Players in the NFL, NBA and NHL seem to be able to feed their families.
Its not a matter of if pro sports players are adequately paid by an objective measure – clearly they are overpaid for what they provide society.
But in MLBs case, most players are “underpaid” (relative to the league) during their most productive seasons, either bc they are subject to arbitration or sign team friendly deals to lock in earnings they would lose if injured. Many get injured and flame out before they can even become free agents. I just can see how these facts could work on a player’s psychology to feel “underpaid,” or at least, not morally indebted to the sport that undervalued them. Its more in line with “using my brain” to expect a cap on all players earnings to exacerbate such thought processes, especially after an era of not having such a cap.
Dorkus Malorkus (3768902)
The temptation to do this will only worsen if a salary cap is instituted in new CBA.
==================================
So if Skenes’ salary is capped at $400,000,000 over ten years, he will have to turn to throwing games to keep food on the table?
Haha, well maaaybe not Skenes in that case, but maybe his teammates, whose earning potential will be restricted by his outsized cap hit? But i think the skenes example you give reflects a very small minority of mlbers earning trajectories. The hypothetical impact of any cap on betting risk would, id think at least, depend on the “height” of the cap, how owners/GMs decide to manage payroll within it, and perhaps most importantly, how individual players perceive their compensation…to be clear, I agree that the premise of millionaire athletes feeling undervalued is ridiculous, im just gaming out how a cap might be received within a sports betting context we are just starting to really understand.
The teammates of Skenes is exactly who a salary cap does help because there’s no way the players accept it without a salary floor. Those players making less will see increases and the top end contracts will flatten or come down.
Wait until they find out the action was taken at chief wahoos casino!
Stu- nod!
Asking price on Duran and Bednar just went up
Stupid gambles, stupid prizes
I’m shocked — SHOCKED — to find that gambling is going on in here!
I don’t think many people will get the reference but it’s from casablanca. What is the last line? I think this is the beginning of a wonderful relationship?
Claude rains said it.
“Here are your winnings, sir.”
“Oh, thank you.”
@El
You are correct sir! “But wait, the worst is yet to come!” Ahahahahahahaha!
Now we know why guardians even were thinking of trading him.
They knew
So you are suggesting that they had an in-demand player with huge surplus value that they knew was about to undergo a serious investigation that could end his playing career. So they maliciously plotted to trade him.. but, I guess, just never got around to it.
No, MRSHOWTIME is saying the Guardians had an inside tip.
Counterpoint: the Guardians are cheap as hell and his $10 million options for 27 and 28 would represent almost 10% of their 2025 payroll
How is that a counterpoint?
It is a counterpoint to the argument that Cleveland wanted to move him because they knew this was coming. They’re just poor.
Ah, I get it now. I thought that was directed at my response.
In all fairness to Cleveland, they are spending $7 million on Sewald for some reason. They could afford to keep Clase but they just might have had better options out there to trade him for offense. That ship has sailed…
It’s definitely hard to keep track on the mobile version with who’s responding to who. And that’s a really fair point about Sewald. They just don’t seem to have a whole ton of cash committed over the next couple of years and I could absolutely see them trying to retool with some more affordable guys. I guess we’ll see what they do in the offseason or this time next year
They would have already traded him if they knew.
The bitter harvest of mlb getting into the gambling business. This is a problem it created for itself. That players may get caught up is unavoidable. Everyone thinks that gambling is just fun and recreational drugs are just that. Well, no. Its as old as time. And now its a part of baseball. You reap what you see. Bitter harvest.
You reap what you sow.
You are spot on. The number of people who think it’s fine is numbing. And so it goes on and on.
not sure why anyone is suprised. cant go past 1st inning of a game without a gambling add. These guys are young with a ton of money to blow. Hardly a shock
Can’t go past 1st inning??? Can’t go past the first words out of the pre-game show’s broadcaster’s mouths and that’s a half hour BEFORE a game starts.
I blame Barstool Tate. Ever since he wrote that silly troll article about Skubal back in May, the season has gone down hill. I know it doesn’t really correlate, but nothing good comes from ragebaiting and now Cleveland is the team that has drama.
The real story might be Clase’s actual age. Cleveland might have another Fausto on their hands.
Evidence: “trust me bro”
That’s another story for another time!! Most mlb fans actually believe that Soto is 26 years old!!
Hopefully Clase has an interpreter to be his fall guy.
So he was betting on MLB … time to ‘Pete Rose’ Mr. Clase.
Uh oh.
Will Manfred find somebody to fall on Clase’s sword?
Maybe he can find a leprechaun or fairy? Oh you say those are made up… so is your insinuation.
Not big enough, Clase takes the fall!!
Cleveland trying to bring its baseball team down to the level of its NFL team.
High bar, but they are on their way
Not even close. Dare I say, not in the same league.
Pirates GM sending an anonymous tip to drive up the cost on Bednar
this is why sports betting should be illegal period .. if they are going to advertise sports betting on sports websites and during games then they need to let everybody bet or stop all betting period
Just like that, Ryan Helsley’s price went very high. Now being the best closer on the market that is possible to be traded.
This was all manipulated by the Dodgers so they could trade for him and only give up a rookie ball 17 year old to add him the BP.
And then when MLB comes out with their investigation findings they will say Will Ireton was doing the bettings with Clase’s money. Interpreters are easy to come by for MLB teams.
Should anyone really be surprised by such a possibility? As a consumer, whether I’m viewing “news” and games on ESPN, Mets coverage on SNY, or content on MLB Network, the call to bet on baseball is UNRELENTING. For ESPN to have its own betting service, while also reporting and providing analysis related to sports, is questionable at best. I’m not a prude by any means, and to each their own as far as gambling is concerned, but in my opinion MLB really needs to look in the mirror and reflect on their policies as it pertains to legal sports betting. I doubt they will, as it’s all about making as much money as possible at the end of the day for them, and that’s all they seem to really care about. If the game hasn’t already been infiltrated and compromised, then it’s just a matter of time before something devastating happens, and MLB’s hands will not be completely clean (in my opinion).
Where is Commissioner Landis now that we need him?
The same Landis who let Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker get away with their little gambling escapade with a slap on the wrist? Yeah, we really need him.
@Hammerin’ “And Ned said [he] done a lot worse than that.”
Ya left out The Athletic!
One of Ortiz’s suspicious balls almost hit a FanDuel ad. It’s ridiculous.
Could have had Rushing but I guess now the Indians get nothing and like it.
Good thing is that the Indians no longer exists.
Them newcomers cleared them Indians off the lands. Them newcomers now guard the lands to prevent them Indians from being remembered.
No, that’s a bad thing.
How is that good, in any way?
them feel no guilt when no one remembers them crime
Brett Taylor writes that his head is spinning over this news. Don’t spin too fast, Brett, your brain might fall out of your ear.
Back on planet Earth: This news, while interesting I suppose from an “industry” point of view–can MLB really be surprised at the upsurge in players having an ambiguous (or worse) relationship with gambling?–it really doesn’t have much significance with regard to the trade deadline. Clase wasn’t going anywhere anyway.
When will they announce Ohtani on admin leave?
When “hell freezes over”???
Pete Rose got a lifetime ban for “not” betting against his own team…..just sayin’
The gambler’s knew when he didn’t like his pitcher because he didn’t bet on him.
Clase definitely not going anywhere at the deadline….
Perhaps back home barbecuing for the rest of the season.
“Boogaloo and barbecue,” as Hal McRae said during the 1981 players’ strike
Not sure about that… I think he just fell into Brian Cashman’s cost comfort zone.
I luv this good ol’ American “presume guilty until proven innocent” thing. Next comes, “where there’s smoke there’s fire” and “I don’t care if they found him innocent, he’s guilty to me from now on.”
He’s suspended with pay. That’s kind of par for the course in every industry.
So many lives being destroyed by gambling. Money is not the only thing people lose. Jobs, families, friends, homes, cars and lives are just a few of what’s at risk. I, myself, cannot gamble like a normal person. So I had to stop gambling completely. I hope everyone has or tries to have a great day.
There’s way worse problems out there than gambling. It’s not that big a deal
Maybe, maybe not. Alcohol and drugs will probably kill you before you gamble your family into the poor house.
Unbelievable, they are not satisfied making over couple millions a year and instead choose couple thousand dollars, face the consequences even I’m Dominican, paid for your mistake you know what are you doing.
Everybody selling a closer just got excited.
How much you wanna bet he gets a ban?
Lol, nothing for you Cleveland fans. Report this post too, crybabies.
?
I guess Cleveland now has no choice but to trade Ramirez to the mariners
As I said in the winter before the 2024 season, they should have traded him when his value was high. He’s regressed a bit this year and now this investigation? Guy’s cooked now and the Indians get nothing in return for him.
%#*{%]%]*}%!!!!!!!!
Gambling the next opiod epidemic #1919.
To lose Ortiz and Clase is devastating for Cleveland.
The allegations against Ortiz were that large bets were placed on throwing a certain pitch as a ball.
If that were true, that’s just a lifetime ban, right? Even though it isn’t betting in the game outcome- you are still placing a bet on a game you are involved in.
Hopefully there is no wrong doing.. but it is difficult to imagine it getting to this point unless the evidence was substantial.
unless the evidence was substantial.

Bookies are usually mathematically elite. It’s more widespread now, but LV knows when any poker game, craps game, sports betting, etc., is cooked.
Suspended for an entire season for PED’s and now this? I’d stay as far away from this guy as possible.
I bet Mr.Clase doesn’t get traded. What are the odds.
Would you make a trade for this guy right now??
What’s next? Domestic violence? Child Abuse? His career is done
Getting carried away here…
Looks like Cade Smith’s value just went up.
I’ll admit, this explains the Jonathan India walk-off Homer the other day.
So hear me out. I’m not saying he did anything or that he didn’t do anything. Who knows.
That being said, does it make sense for guys to get caught up in schemes like this? Clase is playing on a very team friendly contract, yet still has made $11.6M to date and has another $6.4M (not counting $20M in team options) to come, according to baseball-reference.
How much could gamblers possibly pay him (or anyone) to make it worth their time and risk? Most guys, even those playing for close to the minimum, have made enough that the payouts from gamblers can’t possibly compare to potential future earnings. For example, Michael A. Taylor has made over $27M in his career. Will Venable has made almost $14M in his career. Even Steven Kwan, who is grossly underpaid and isn’t yet arbitration eligible, has already made over $5M for his career with plenty more to come. All of these numbers come from baseball-reference. We’re not talking about the 1919 White Sox here.
So I wonder if it’s possible that the bettors have gotten sophisticated enough to predict things like whether the next pitch will be a ball or strike. If the count is 0-2 and you have someone with Clase’s command, would it surprise you if he threw one off the plate hoping the batter will chase? If I gambled professionally, I’d certainly place that bet. And would it be unreasonable for that pitch to be farther outside or lower than intended and end up as a non-competitive pitch?
I don’t know…Occam’s Razor
I wonder why the Catchers aren’t being looked at, they call the pitches…Isn’t his name Hedges. Like as hedge my bets.
Valid point.
When you play with fire… this is a direct result of them covering up for Ohtani. Players think “wow I guess there are no consequences, I can get away with it too.”
His career is dust in the wind.
You forgot to add “Dude” at the end.
This story is brought to you by FanDuel and Bet365. Nothing wrong with hypocrisy as long as it is us doing it and not you.
Why couldn’t his interpreter take the fall?
Damn, why couldn’t it have been Kepler and Romano, getting noticed by Manfred, filling out a gambling form while he was touring the clubhouse.
LOL! Finally, some logical thought.
This news brought to you by DraftKings!
Clase to the Rays for Franco.
First class organization
anybody want to place BETS on how this one plays out?
MLB and the NFL, etc., have been way too close to sports betting. They even promote for crying out loud! This should be a wake up call to end that arrangement immediately.
Manfred’s take that making it all above board meaning it’s out in the open now is an interesting one, and I’m no fan of him at all. But it’s not like guys haven’t been betting on sports before it was legalized everywhere.
I agree with you, however with the revenue at stake they aren’t going to change this.
Aren’t catchers the ones that call the game?
Not necessarily. The Braves reportedly call their pitches from the dugout via pitch com.
what bush league crap.
You’re never gonna guess what Houston does with its trashcans.
This is my favorite article on here in a long while. It helped me identify and mute about 20 morons and I’ll never have to see their dumb BS on here again! Thanks Clase!!!
Realizing there are more details that will come out but seriously??? These guys grow up in mud huts and then make millions and still not enough??
Mud huts? That’s some real racist bs there, pal. Congrats!
Yeah he probably thinks they wear loin cloths and throw spears too.
Damn, he grew up in Cleveland too!?!
MLB got into bed with the gambling industry then routinely gets mad at it for leaving crumbs in the bed. It would be far easier to take the moral high ground if you didn’t offer betting odds during every broadcast and your network give betting odds on its running ticker all day long..
Rsox ~ 100%
Pro-sports made the deal with the devil, and this is just the beginning. We’re going to see this crap all the time and in any sport that pushes online down the fan’s throats during every broadcast.
I heard he bet the under for a lifetime ban, so I’m sure he’s good.
Kinda looks like Ortiz is trying to save his butt by giving names. lol. Now i have always wondered what if someone borrowed his phone one time and did it without their knowledge. Or like im waiting for the day when someone who is fighting for a spot and puts something in someone’s water bottle so they test positive. Which mark my words someone will do that eventually too
Tip of the iceberg most likely. Could be the biggest scandal in baseball history. Hard to believe only two players were involved in this type of gambling. The open association with gambling was a stroke of genius, Manfred!
It sets a horrible precedent in all professional and revenue-generating college sports. We’ve already seen some funny stuff in the NBA, and college basketball is always ripe for another scandal.

Stupid. Dumb. Dangerous.
In a surprise move the Cleveland Guardians trade Jose Ramirez to the Dodgers for James Outman, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, Dalton Rushing, and manager Dave Roberts, and a player to be named later.
In a follow up move the Guards announce that current manager Stephen Vogt is the new General Manager.
Manfred in prison for life for ruining the game and establishing a bridge between players, coaches, employees and organized gambling.
No mercy. He must be held accountable.
