The Padres just landed a superstar reliever in the biggest move of deadline season. Mason Miller’s presence theoretically gives the Padres more freedom to trade incumbent closer Robert Suarez in the next three hours. That doesn’t appear to be the team’s plan, though.
Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune and Dennis Lin of The Athletic each wrote this afternoon that the Friars were leaning towards holding Suarez. Both reports note that they’re still entertaining a trade of impending free agent starter Dylan Cease. Suarez is likely to hit free agency this winter as well. He’s expected to opt out of the remaining two years and $16MM on his contract. Cease is a pure rental who is making $13.75MM.
Suarez’s opt-out makes him a more complicated trade candidate. Other teams could have trepidation about the possibility of a late-season injury that causes him to bypass the out chance. That’s something they’d want to price into the prospect return they’re offering San Diego. It could explain why the Padres don’t appear to have found much traction on a return they consider compelling. Instead, they seem inclined to stick with a monster bullpen including Miller, Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon to shorten games for what they hope will be a deep playoff run.
The focus now appears to be on an outfielder. San Diego has reportedly addressed their catching need by landing Freddy Fermin from Kansas City for back-end starters Ryan Bergert and Stephen Kolek. They still need to add a left fielder; Acee writes that acquiring a right-hand hitting outfielder would be ideal.
Biggest question remaining? Who gets the super-cool closer’s entrance between the two of them?
Both depending on who is closing that night.
Suarez fantasy owners are going nuts
I would be one of those. Not happy at all. But I’m in a keeper league so I can keep him when he hopefully signs as a closer with a new team next year.
Suarez will stay the closer. Tanner Scott was put into the 8th inning role last year.
So you think it’s like a Yankees Bednar situation? Williams remains closer, and then Bednar takes over next year when Williams becomes a FA. They can do this an eight Suarez/Miller. I would think since Suarez leads the league in saves he wouldn’t be too happy if he got supplanted.
Miller > Suarez > Scott
And it makes all the sense in the world to trade him, too. Lot of clubs would love Suarez as their closer going into October
Pads maybe creating leverage for a better return
IF they don’t trade Suarez, that means from the 4th inning on, teams are gonna have to deal with Estrada, Morejon, Adam, Miller, Suarez.
That’s NASTY.
(I still think they should package Suarez and Cease together in a deal for a LF though.)
Padres shouldn’t be holding anyone. Especially dudes.
Keeping Suarez after trading for Miller makes no sense. We still have no bats and have dumped a top 5 prospect, and all of our SP depth. Bullpen already had the best save rate in MLB, This doesn’t help win any more games.
The Padres are going for it. Its a win now mentality.
I understand that, but how does solve their issues of lack of offense and lack of bench depth. They aren’t losing games because of their bullpen, I don’t see how adding Miller is helping them win the type of 2-1 games they’re already winning. The problem is the games they’re losing 4-2. I could possibly understand these moves if they ended up acquiring Kwan/Durrna and Langiliers, Andujar. I just have a feeling they’re going to lose in the playoff because they can’t score and this elite bullpen has no lead to protect. People look at the dodgers last year, but the difference is the Dodgers had an elite offense that could give the bullpen leads to protect.
Exactly. They need DESPERATE help on offense. Who cares if they’re bullpen is elite if they can’t get a lead. They need to trade their bullpen depth for another hitter
More trades or you’re correct
Preller again showing his brilliance at balanced team construction. But why not another 2nd sacker? Not to mention he has now disrupted team chemistry and cohesion by making excessive moves right when they are starting to gel. Go back to go and start over. Still time for it to make more sense with more deals.
Rumors has it Miller was traded to be a starter
You got to know when to hold them and know when to fold them!
Worst case he walks you QO him and get a pick back.
Despite Acee and Lin’s thoughts to the contrary, Preller said they really didn’t intend to move Suarez
Sure, let’s just take the best bullpen in Baseball and add Mason Miller to it.
Well they can start to employ the bullpen in the fifth inning now..
also known as playoff baseball
They traded Baez Nett Kolek Bergert….whos actually left to start if they deal cease lol
Starters who needs starters. Bull pen day every day.
King (back soon), Pivetta, Darvish, Cease, Vasquez, sears and hart are the remaining starters that have started for them this year. So still 7 deep. Should be fine for two months.
So currently 4 options if they keep cease 3 if they deal him in Pivetta Vasquez Sears with hopefully a healthy King Darvish and Hart isn’t a viable option
Hopefully they deal Cease for some pitching depth and Suarez too.
Hopefully they don’t move either of those two.
Pivetta/Cease/King (who said he is ready to return)/Darvish (who threw a 7 innings of 2-hit, shutout ball in his last start), Sears/Hart/Waldron is still really good. Especially since you rarely see a 4th starter in the playoffs, but you often see 5 IP from the 3 starters used and then a lot of relievers in the playoffs.
I wouldn’t count Hart as depth, unless it’s a home game.
He left out Vasquez
Leaving out Vasquez was a big mistake. He is the #5 starter right now over Sears in my mind.
Trade him and promote My Neighbor Morejon
Morejon may move into the rotation next season.
Hope not, he’s an allstar RP
Would you rather have him as an All Star reliever or an All Star starting pitcher? He has the stuff to get it done.
The only reason he wasn’t a starting pitcher this yer is that Preller and Shildt thought he needed another season to stretch out. After what is looking like a 70 appearance season, he could safely move into a starting role with Miller/Estrada/Adam providing solid backend of the pen. Either that or Miller moves into the rotation and Estrada moves into the closer role with Morejon as a setup man again. The options are all good.
Would rather go with track record
Or promote your Tyson Neighbor
I like keeping Suarez. Make the pen better and they are going to need it.
Never wanted him to be traded as his value ROS is so much more than what little we’d get back for him
Two closers can work in the Padres favor though, now you don’t have to worry about using one for a long stretch, take some of the wear of overuse, they can rotate. But I do agree Pads need another bat, sounds like WSox are not leaning to trading Roberts. Preller could call AZ maybe work out a deal for Gurriel.
We now have 5 closers. What would you ask for Marte? Cut a deal and we promise to take out LA on your behalf mate!
Say what? Fermin for Bergert and Kolek? What?
Well, been without a viable LF and own a weak bench since October. Why not wait until next year.
Is Preller doubling down on the worst offense among all contending teams?
What’s the point of saving a 1-0 game if your the one with the 0??
Exactly
