2:38pm: MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports that the Yankees have pitched the Marlins on a potential package deal involving Alcantara and Bender.
10:25am: All eyes are on Sandy Alcantara today, with less than seven hours to go until the MLB trade deadline. The former Cy Young winner sports an ugly post-Tommy John 6.36 ERA in 21 starts, but he has totaled 12 scoreless innings in his last two starts against the Padres and Cardinals.
Alcantara is controlled through 2027 by virtue of the contract extension he signed over three years ago. The Astros and Red Sox were linked to him yesterday, while the Mets, Padres, and Cubs are among those previously connected. This morning, Jon Heyman of the New York Post adds another potential suitor: the Yankees.
The Yankees have Luis Gil set to make his season debut Sunday against the Marlins following his spring lat strain, which may send Cam Schlittler back to Triple-A (if the latter isn’t included in a trade today). Gil will join veterans Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Marcus Stroman, as well as Will Warren. As Greg Joyce of the New York Post wrote yesterday, a rotation acquisition by the Yankees would force a choice between Warren and Stroman.
With a competitive balance tax payroll around $314MM after additions of Ryan McMahon, Amed Rosario, and Austin Slater, the Yankees face a 110% tax on every dollar they add this summer. Alcantara is earning $17MM this year and next, with a club option for 2027. Acquiring Alcantara would mean adding more than $6MM to the Yankees’ CBT ledger for this year, plus a tax of around $6.7MM.
Teams seeking starting pitching are also intrigued by hard-throwing Marlins righty Edward Cabrera. Cabrera, 27, is having a better season than Alcantara and is under team control through 2028 at much lower (expected) salaries than Alcantara. As such, it makes sense that the Yankees are interested in Cabrera, as Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports today with five hours left until the deadline. The Marlins are eyeing powerful Yankees outfield prospect Spencer Jones, notes Morosi. According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, “interest in both Alcantara and Cabrera is very high.”
Sammon also notes that a pair of Marlins righty relievers are drawing interest in Ronny Henriquez and Calvin Faucher. Henriquez’s 32.4 K% ranks 20th among relievers this year, and he’s been mentioned as an under-the-radar trade candidate by MLBTR several times this month. Given that Henriquez was a February waiver claim who had limited MLB experience with the Twins, he’s under team control through 2030.
As you might expect, Sammon reports that Faucher is more likely to be traded today. Faucher, 30 in September, has a 3.73 ERA, 23.2 K%, and 10.7 BB% this year with a 44.2% groundball rate. He’s less intriguing than Henriquez, but is under control through 2029. Righty Anthony Bender has also been in rumors this month.
Finally, Sammon points out that Marlins outfielders Jesus Sanchez and Dane Myers are also drawing interest. Sanchez, 28 in October, is under team control through 2027. He’s a left-handed hitter who has a slightly above average 104 wRC+ since 2023, though against righties he’s at 119 during that time. Myers, a December 2022 waiver claim from the Tigers, is under team control through ’29. He’s a righty hitter who can serve as a lefty masher, given his 141 wRC+ against southpaws in 172 plate appearances dating back to 2023.
Sanchez has been playing right field for the Marlins, often sitting against lefties. Myers has been taking most starts in center, occasionally sharing with Javier Sanoja.
The one thing I respect about Miami is they ask high in their demands if it’s not a deal involving pinstripes.
Agustin Ramirez
The one thing I respect out of Miami is they ask high returns if it’s not a deal w the pinstripes.
As they should in their position absolutely.
Why do you single out the Yankees?
I think its fair considering consistency in trade history
Very easy reply….because when any team trades with the Yankees, it’s always the best offer +….Teams know that the Yankees goal is making the playoffs and they do that pretty much each and every year….so GM’s dealing with Cashman always asks for top returns for whoever Cash is trading for…..always 2 and 3 player trades coming from the Yankees for 1, maybe 2 players going over……thats why he said what he said….
rocky7: Any GM doing his job correctly asks for top returns from any team interested in his players.
And it’s most teams’ goal to make it to the postseason.
If what you said about the Yankees was true, then they would get every player they try for, and you know that doesn’t happen.
The Yankees’ aren’t treated differently just because they’re the Yankees. That’s only in the minds of fans. Their crap stinks as much as anyone else’s.
The Yankees must try to get Sandy or Cabby today via trade.
Why do we want sandy tho? He doesn’t crack our top 3 in a playoff series as he currently is. And we don’t exactly have a strong 3
You need 4 starters
No you don;t……the 4th starter only comes into play when you looking to close the other team out in a series and you’re trying to set up your rotation for the next series….
Trade Cabrera, Cal Q, Bender and Jesus Sanchez, they seem to be at their highest value points right now. Those four should bring back at least 2 top 100 prospects and another 3 to 4 solid prospects at least…
Given how good the team has been of late, Alcantara can help lead this team to a surprise WC berth and into 2026. Also no need to trade Henriquez or Myers in my eyes.
It is far harder to get a Top 100 type prospect as a return than most think on here. MLBTR pointed this out yet again – the average is about 3 per deadline in all of baseball.
Phils gave up Tait (50 +/-) and Padres just gave up Leo de Vries for Miller. Both went for elite arms that had extensive control, and both were also years away from the majors (which adds to the risk component).
Given his recent outings , and history, what type of package could the Red Sox offer for Alcantara?? Would they accept an offer of J. Garcia and Arias? Tolle ?
The only untouchable in the Red Sox farm is Tolle imo. He’s going to be a monster I’m not trading him in anything short of a package for Skenes.
@cdchi –
I think Miami would want a pitcher back in return but Boston does not want to deal Tolle or Perales. I could see a package of either Arias or Garcia, along with Brandon Clarke and another lower level prospect in the 20-30 range on Boston’s Top 30 list.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind if they traded Tibbs instead of Garcia or Arias, but I’m not sure Miami would go for that. The Sox don’t need another LHH OF prospect.

I believe Miami will want at least one pitcher back in return for Alcantra, but Boston does not want to deal Tolle or Perales. I could see them offering a package of either Arias or Garcia along with Brandon Clarke and another lower level pitching prospect who is ranked 20-30 on Boston’s Top 30 list.
Personally, I’d love to see them trade James Tibbs over Arias or Garcia as Boston does not need another LHH OF prospect but I’m
not sure that Miami would go for that.
Dane Myers makes a ton of sense for a poor team that’s focusing on defense. Oh, that’s the Reds.
Yankees no sleeping today. Time to go trade for Sandy or Cabby! Let’s Go!
Said this a few days ago. Obviously some things have changed, so trading off pieces probably makes the most sense. I wouldnt trade anyone too important though. They also may have finally addressed 1b a little by finally giving Johnston a chance
Marlins kind of in a tough spot. You would argue they should move certain people, like Otto Lopez, Jesus Sanchez, Fortes, Cal Quantrill, Janson Junk, Valente Bellozo, Calvin Faucher, Lake Bachar, Tyler Phillips, Anthony Bender, and look towards next year
But with the team surging, and being essentially 4 games back of the wildcard, making additions might have to be considered. There’s like 7 teams in front of the Marlins for 3 spots though, so thats where the wariness is; should they give up assets to make a push? If they do, they probably need at least a SP that can give them some innings, maybe 1 higher leverage bullpen arm, and help at either 1b/3b…not that much, in reality, but even so, it would be tough for me to be cool with giving up assets, unless its a really interesting deal that could really help them, and especially if it carries over to next year. The Marlins have some guys they can call up as the end of the year approaches, so a small addition could go a long way for them…
It depends on how much you really have Sandy and Eury the rest of the way, health wise, and if Edward Cabrera could actually continue what he has been doing. It wouldn’t be that surprising if the Marlins kept winning; the bullpen has been good, and I was never worried about the offense this year, and they’ve been getting better SPing in the recent stretc. I dont think I would necessarily move Sandy or Edward Cabrera right now, unless it was a significant return; I think I would hold on both and see where they go from this stretch, and move the other guys, especially the bullpen pieces
Lol… it amuses me how the “link machine” picked up, and linked, both Cy Young and Tommy John. 🙂
LOL the Marlins are up for trading *anyone* if the right offer comes through.
I wish the yanks would’ve looked into otto Lopez, obviously he cost young controllable talent but yeah. I don’t love any of their pitchers for the nyy rotation right now
It feels like Miami is overplaying its hand, especially with Alcantara. Although, based on the Bieber trade, somebody will probably cough up more than they should for Sandy. It doesn’t feel like he’ll be a huge difference maker this season.
Hope the Dodgers go for Sandy, I think they can fix him. And then proceed to blow out his arm again.
How much for Eury?
Cease – to cubs
Alcantara – to S D
prospects – to Mia
Marlins asked for Warren and Dominguez, and Yankees asked Marlins to take on Strowman
Idk that I’d want them to send dominguez for sandy but tbh I think it’s entirely reasonable for the yanks to insist on Miami taking stroman’s money in any deal for sandy.
Will Warren for Sandy straight up.
Bendix made the right choice in keeping Sandy and Eddy. LFG Fish!
