The Yankees have a new third baseman. New York announced the acquisition of Ryan McMahon from the Rockies for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz. The Yanks already had an opening on the 40-man roster, so no additional move was necessary.
The Yankees are taking on the remainder of McMahon’s contract. He is making a $12MM salary this year, leaving a bit more than $4MM to be paid out, then will make $16MM in each of the next two seasons.
McMahon, 30, will join a new franchise for the first time in his career. He was drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2013 draft. He climbed up to the majors and eventually established himself as a regular in Colorado, playing quality defense at multiple infield positions.
It’s hard to say what the Yankees will be getting from McMahon offensively. He has generally been good for 20-25 home runs a year, though while playing his home games in the hitters’ haven of Coors Field and with some high strikeout totals. Despite some good surface-level stats, he’s generally been ranked as a subpar hitter by metrics that adjust for the Coors effect. He has a career batting line of .240/.323/.420 but a wRC+ of 89. In other words, that metric considers him 11% worse than league average at the plate.
For his career, McMahon has hit .263/.343/.476 at home and .216/.302/.362 on the road, obviously a huge difference. At first glance, that might suggest he can only hit in Denver and will fall to pieces in a new jersey. The truth is likely more nuanced than that. Pitches move differently at elevation than they do at sea level due to the differences in resistance or drag. Most notably, breaking balls move less in Denver than in other parks, so it’s tough for Colorado hitters to constantly adjust as they go on the road and back.
Over the years, many players have had big home-road splits as Rockies but then evened out after leaving Denver. One such player is DJ LeMahieu, who also moved from the Rockies to the Yankees. During his time with Colorado, LeMahieu hit .329/.386/.447 at Coors but just .267/.314/.367 on the road. When he left Denver for the Bronx, the move wasn’t difficult for him at all. He slashed .336/.386/.536 over his first two seasons with the Yankees.
In terms of the glovework, there’s little question that McMahon is strong there. He has played lots of first base and second base in his career but has settled in as Colorado’s third baseman. The Yanks will surely keep him at the hot corner. They recently moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third to second, both due to his personal comfort level and some shoulder soreness he was experiencing. That led to LeMahieu getting bumped off the roster and released.
They’ve been connected to various third basemen for weeks, including McMahon, Eugenio Suárez and others. In the meantime, they’ve been covering the position with Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas. Neither of those two have been hitting well this year. Vivas has a .164/.270/.255 line this year while Peraza is at .147/.208/.237.
For McMahon’s career, he has 5,550 innings at third. He’s been credited with 64 Defensive Runs Saved and 44 Outs Above Average. Dating back to the start of 2021, when he first got regular run at third, he has 54 DRS and 42 OAA. In both cases, he trails only Ke’Bryan Hayes among big league third basemen for that span.
The Yankees can bank on sure-handed defense at third. The Yankees love ground-ball pitchers, on account of their hitter-friendly park, so McMahon should be a notable upgrade in turning those grounders into outs. The offense is a bit more of a question mark, as outlined above, but it will still likely be an upgrade over the in-house options.
Due to his contract, McMahon should be able to cover the hot corner for not just this year but two more. The Rockies signed him to an extension just ahead of the 2022 season. As mentioned, that deal pays McMahon $12MM this year followed by $16MM in each of the next two years. The Yankees will be paying him at a higher rate than that. They are a third-time competitive balance tax payor and above the highest CBT tier. That means they pay a 110% tax on any new spending.
A player’s CBT hit is recalculated at the time of a trade to account for what is left on the contract. McMahon is still owed about $36.2MM over two seasons and the roughly 35% of this year’s schedule that remains. That works out to a CBT hit of about $15.4MM. Prorate that over the rest of the year and McMahon adds about $5.4MM to the 2025 CBT. 110% of that is a bit over $5.9MM in taxes. That means the Yanks are paying more than $11MM total to have McMahon for the stretch run. Taxes will likely be a factor with his 2026 and 2027 seasons as well.
In addition to the financial cost, the Yanks are also subtracting a couple of pitchers from their system. Herring, 22, was a sixth-round pick in last year’s draft. He has made 16 starts this year between Single-A and High-A, eight at each level. He has a combined 1.71 earned run average, 28.5% strikeout rate, 10.1% walk rate and 50% ground ball rate. Baseball America gives him a 45 grade on the 20-80 scale and had him listed as the #17 prospect in the Yankee system.
Grosz, 22, was an 11th-round pick in 2023. He has since pitched 208 2/3 innings in the minors with a 3.97 ERA, 25.7% strikeout rate and 10% walk rate. BA doesn’t list him as one of the top 30 prospects in the Yankee system.
For the Rockies, it’s a notable shift for them. They haven’t had a winning record since 2018 but haven’t always capitalized on their losing seasons by trading players at the deadline. Trevor Story wasn’t traded and ended up departing for just qualifying offer compensation. Jon Gray didn’t even get a QO, so he departed for nothing. Players like Daniel Bard and C.J. Cron got ill-advised extensions instead of being traded.
However, the team seems to be accepting that they are in a rough spot and need change. Their struggles have reached a new nadir this year. Their 26-76 record is easily the worst in baseball. In fact, they are on pace to challenge the modern-day loss record, which the White Sox set just last year.
The scope of the franchise’s struggles has opened up more willingness to try new things. Though the club has often been considered loyal to a fault, they fired manager Bud Black in May. McMahon was reportedly a favorite of owner Dick Monfort, but that’s no longer enough to keep him off the trading block. The club is also reportedly open to offers on controllable pitchers like Victor Vodnik and Seth Halvorsen.
Parting with McMahon allows them to add some young pitching prospects, which is an ongoing concern for them. They regularly struggle to put competent pitching staffs together and even some of their modest success stories are running out of steam. Germán Márquez, Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and Austin Gomber have all had some success for the Rockies but they’re all now in their 30s and nearing free agency. Márquez and Gomber hit the open market in a few months. Senzatela and Freeland have options in their contracts but are only guaranteed through 2026.
The Rockies will ideally develop younger pitchers over time, but even their most notable prospect struggled this year, as Chase Dollander had a 6.68 ERA in 15 starts before being sent back down to the minors. Improving their long-term pitching outlook will be an ongoing project and they’ve added a couple more arms today.
The move could also have impacts on the broader market. The Yankees were one of several clubs connected to Suárez, so there is one less suitor for him now. However, he has reportedly drawn interest from a dozen different teams, so the Snakes should still be able to do well there. Even after adding McMahon, the Yankees should still be on the lookout for pitching. The Rockies, meanwhile, could make a few more trades before next week’s deadline. In addition to the aforementioned pitchers, position players like Thairo Estrada and Mickey Moniak could be available.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first reported the Yankees had an agreement to acquire McMahon for two prospects. ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported Herring’s inclusion. Bob Nightengale of USA Today was first with Grosz heading to Colorado. Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported that the Yanks were assuming McMahon’s entire salary.

Typical Cashman move zero difference maker. LoL
Pretty solid offensively. Not sure why you wouldn’t think he would contribute.
You think those are good offensive numbers especially playing in coors field?
He’s there for defense. My point is, outside of the high Ks he’ll contribute just fine. They need the defense.
Career close to league average bat with 20+ homer pop, Gold Glove defense at third.
Better than anything they had, by a lot, on either side of the ball.
.216/.302/.362 career hitter away from coors.
Still better than Peraza or Vivas
Did you even read the article?
He is a lefty, so may offset some of those numbers. Reminds me of when Yankees traded for Scott Brouis he had hit 201 with the A’s. So maybe a change of scenery
Can contribute to 2nd place
Other than K and BA his statcast page looks really nice.
Von is in love with Mendoza line hitters.
I’m sure that short fence in Yankee Stadium will welcome his swing. Using Coor Fields gimmicks as a way to analyze a player is cherry picking at best
.664 OPS road hitting with plus defense would be a perfectly acceptable #9 hitter, or a slightly weak #8 hitter. And he should be closer to .680-.690 OPS in Yankee Stadium once he gets accustomed to it.
He also won’t have the physical toll of playing half of his games at altitude.
Which makes you wonder why they didn’t prefer Ke’Brian Hayes
Not to mention that he will finally get to play for a team in contention. Spending your whole career with a team always losing has to make it hard to be fully motivated each day.
There’s much cheaper options though if it was only about the defense. He will be counted on to contribute offensively.
Yankees for second place? I think you are setting your sights too high, Sir. I predict we’ll wind up finishing in fourth place when it’s all said and done. Lousy team. Thanks, Cashman!
Is not the short fence, it is the contact,,like Bellinger,,,not contact not fence
Why can’t people figure out that the ridiculously short porch in rightfield for Yankee Stadium does NOT benefit lefties? It totally screws them up because they start swinging for the porch every pitch. You watch, his already lousy .217 average will soon be .175 after being a Yankee for two months.
One year he hit above average away and another average. Didn’t go back too far to find it. So we know it’s possible. Which means playing full time away from coors it’s possible to be average or above and with that defense that’s all he needs to be.
Yankee Stadium is known for a short right-field porch, which modestly helps left-handed hitters—but overall, its HR effect is closer to league average than generally believed.. Overall Yankee Stadium is middle of the pack for hitting favorability..
Where was he hitting in the Rockies lineup? I can’t imagine him hitting any higher than 7 with the Yankees.
Hayes no jelly in back is toast. Dunno maybe he can manage it his career but I wouldn’t bet on it. They got a superior hitter as well.
We’re talking about Aaron Boone. McMahon could wind up being the leadoff hitter or even the clean up hitter for all we know. Bozo the Clown Boone just throws nine names into his hat, picks them out and makes his lineup out like that, I’m convinced of it.
We can only hope. Rays up!
The only thing the pirates dont need are pitching prospects..plus McMahon is better defensively
Cheaper? Yankees? Believe me, McMahon isn’t putting the Yankees in debt.
So Coors Field makes his contact less? Not seeing the logic in that
Every field has its gimmicks. Doesn’t make the player any less no matter where he goes
It’s not like he’s going to a big ballpark. Yankee Stadium is pretty hitter friendly in its own right. This isn’t the same as a move to San Francisco with the marine air or Seattle would be. I think his hitting will be the same or maybe even better like LeMahieu when he first came from Colorado.
It looks like he’s very good defensively. This is a solid but not flashy move in my opinion
Plus defender, never OPS’d over 100 and thats playing half his games in Coors. Kind of a meh move for both teams.
You realize ops+ is park adjusted right?
OPS+ is park adjusted so playing at Coors doesn’t help that stat
OPS+ is park adjusted, so the fact that he plays at Coors is already accounted for in that number. The Rockies as a team have never had an OPS+ over 100, ever in their history, because of the extreme park effect.
You’ll really like Mac. Spectacular and smooth fielder, and can hit the ball a mile lefty. Will feast on that porch.
A Mendoza line hitter with 35 ribbies should excite a play in team.
Evaluating a player from the worst team in baseball on RBI totals?
That is like shaming a polar bear for not catching penguins.
He is one of the glaring reasons the lowly Rockies are the worst teams in baseball. Im sure he will become more than the sum of his parts, suddenly, playing in the rotten apple. A very below average move, for a very below average player by a team going nowhere.
and yet this team seems to be in your head a lot. Whatever team you root for seems not worth posting as many comments on, which says a lot.
Ryan McMahon has NEVER even been league average in any season during his career as he’s had a sub 100 ops+ every year he’s been in the majors.
He’ll probably improve the Yankees defense as he’s been pretty solid throughout his career but to expect McMahon help the Yankees offensively is not something one should expect.
His 90 wRC+ is a 60 point inprovement from what they are getting currently.
He just needs to be slightly below league average. They have plenty of other hitters.
Even slightly below average offense would improve the team on that side. ABs his defense will also help out. It’s not a big move, but it’s a solid pickup without giving up any real prospects.
It’s a good move but they did give up their #8 prospect.
92 OPS+ isnt what i’d call “solid offensively”. Hes better than Vivas but not really a needle mover
OPS+ is park adjusted so playing at Coors gives him 0 advantage in that statistic.
you’d think playing at coors would mean he doesnt lead the league in strikeouts since you’d want to put the ball in play more but thats just me. yes OPS+ is park adjusted but his numbers are still not good.
he bats .189/.265/.324 on the road. if he didnt play at Coors at all his OPS+ would be lower despite the park adjustments
Rockies hitters suffer a unique disadvantage on the road because pitches break differently in Denver versus everywhere else.
deepseamonster32 THIS!!! It’s amazing how baseball fans like to feel so enlightened about advanced stats and absolutely never take this into account. Eno Sarris did a great article about this a couple of years ago.
Deepsea,
Thats cool, hes still a poor hitter
Joe,
Basic stats, advanced stats, splits, the whole picture, show Ryan McMahon is a below average hitter. We clearly take into account the ballpark and its effects on a hitter when considering home vs away splits but if you wanna be a contrarian to make yourself feel better then knock yourself out lol. OPS+ is ballpark adjusted and still doesnt reflect well for him. So he leads the league in strikeouts because he cant adjust to a different break and therefor hes just fine of a hitter? But dont worry about that just ignore every good hitter whos ever played at Coors had inflated numbers at Coors
THIS!!!
Begamin I’m not saying he’s suddenly going to be an elite batter. I’m speaking to the overall Coors home/away splits that get discussed with every Rockies player. And OPS+ doesn’t take into account all the factors involved with the unique situation with Coors. As I mentioned about the article from Eno Sarris, he was showing the large difference between the beginning of a road trip and end of a road trip for Rockies players. The end of the road trip is when the players are getting more comfortable with the movement of the ball away from Coors. OPS+ is useless with such things.
Begamin, League average-ish hitter with a good glove.
Yeah, I’d be weary of a guy coming from the 26-76 Rockies too, but considering who he’s replacing it looks like a massive upgrade.
Too many teams in on Suarez, especially with Detroit and Seattle’s farms.
Oh so when they go back home theres 0 adjustment needed they just go back to mashing after adjusting to pitching away from Coors? Sure lol Im not buying that its so much more difficult for hitters who play for the Rockies to play on the road than it is easier for them to play at home with the thin air. Road teams dont seem to have a hard time adjusting to the Colorado air
Begamin less movement on the ball takes less adjustment. This isn’t just me saying this. This is one of the best analytical baseball writers out there saying this. Are you not familiar with Sarris?
How many pitches would a regular see in a 6 game home stand? 4 to 5 PAs a game x 4 or 5 pitches per PA? Somewhere in the realm of 100-120 pitches? You do that at Coors and then the next day you are hitting at Oracle in a night game? That’s got to be tough. And that’s not at all baked into park factor.
Begamin, I wouldn’t underestimate what Joe Says… says. Beyond the ball flying and lots of OF grass to touch, there are very real other effects of playing at elevation half the time that players on the Rockies contend with. You say advanced stats show he is a poor hitter but xwOBA which is a nice context neutral stat that measures quality of contact at the bat shows him to be a very good hitter in terms of plate approach and quality of contact. It has its blind spots for sure but the typical ones aren’t overly apparent when you look at his profile. I think there’s more reason to be optimistic that getting out of that environment is going to lead to improved offensive numbers. And even if not, his on base floor is pretty high because he draws plenty of walks and he hits his fair share of homers which is more than enough when considering how much he helps that atrocious defense. Though as a Toronto fan maybe I don’t have a good sense of that. Boone said they were a good defensive team outside of Toronto so maybe they’re better than what I just watched the past two series between the Yanks and Jays.
You still have to adjust both ways. If you adjusted so much because its such a big deal to the increaded pitch movement then you have to adjust back that much when you take it away. Not gonna gigabrain think they perform poorly on the road when the obvious answer is that its simply easier to hit at Coors. Less pitch movement is just another bonus for hitting at Coors
He leads all of baseball in striking out, has a career OPS+ under 100 and is a career .216 hitter away from Coors field.
Looking at these early deals I can feel the panic in Hoyer from my house. It’s going to jolt him into doing something bad I know it. The Tigers have lost some games and I don’t see Scott Harris panicking. Instead of keeping it simple he’ll go for the big deal because that’s who he is but he’s not the guy Ricketts should be trusting right now. Does anybody think Cashman will do the same? Just curious.
Mike
I have to believe Ricketts already knows if Jed-eye is staying or going. If Jed is going then he may not have full control over the deals.
Lugo, Bender and Santana would be nice but the price for Lugo will probably be too high.
the tigers have already said they aren’t doing any big deals lol this such a terrible take. why would hoyer be in a panic? because he didn’t trade for this guy? let Shaw keep going and learning if they can’t get Suarez.
If one looks at his stats, the mystery is revealed.
Leads the NL in strikeouts and is hitting .217, tack on two years at 16M per. He has hit a little bit in July
Grosz is a good prospect, could add some to his fastball, still young and developing, same pitch mix as DeGrom.
Herring looks like a nice prospect too. Rockies save a load of dough and get two good arms. Good trade for the Rockies.
*duuur defensively
I’m not sure a .710 ops, while playing half your games at Coors, is really all that solid.
@Von’sPurpleHazy IPA….Well, it’s rare that the first comment is a thoughtful comment, right?
He’s got a .589 OPS this year outside of Coors. He’s not a good major league player.
OPS outside of coors for 1 half season is irrelevant. You have to dig deep and analyze swing to have any idea what he will do outside of coors. Quick glance suggest he should be above average player for NY.
THat’s why we call him Crashman. Crash and burn!
Trashman too
He’s 100 times better than Peraza
He will make difference. Just in the wrong way.
you would say that about literally any move the yankees made, and we both know that..
disagree
So Publicly Reported isn’t on the move? Or not yet? Seems like a decent prospect >.>
@mlbnyyfan – He isn’t Suarez, but McMahon is a top notch defender. The offense is down but now he’ll have a better lineup around him.
Carnac the Magnificent predicted that it would be McMahon – “Yes!”
Why are you laughing out loud at your own comment?
Lefty bat
He can catch and throw the baseball.
They need a glove more. Yankees hurt pitching already. D is another matter
It signals that they are not paying what the D-backs are asking for Suárez. Bad news for the D-backs. They won’t be able to tell other teams that they are bidding against the Yankees.
He’s an improvement, but meh. He’s ranked #131 out of 160 batters in MLB by OPS+ (for comparison, Volpe is #136). That qualifies him as a bad hitter, in my book. How long before he is booed?
Agreed, but he isn’t here to hit. Any offense he gives is gravy on the potatoes. We need to catch the GD baseball.
Another financial anvil. Over $30mm owed for the next two years.
And he’ll hit .220 and strikeout 150 times a year.
Geno to Mariners, one step closer!
Rather it you than me, brother. The Mariners, having never been to a WS, should do whatever they have to do to get there. The Yankees have been playing winning baseball for 30 plus years, and their “window” isn’t “closing”. There is no need to overpay for a streaky 35-year-old, poor fielding third baseman.
How is he a zero difference maker? You just upgraded to a Gold Glove defender. You know it’s not all about offense right? We don’t need offense. We didn’t lose the WS last year because of our offense. We lost because of our defense.
The Toronto series, too. We were leading all of those games until our defense let us down.
You aren’t going to the WS this year my friend,in fact doubtful you join the dance. IMO.
Well…the Yankees are in the first Wild Card spot and have been awful. I think your opinion is flawed as far as them making the playoffs. I think even the Yankees know their roster isn’t good enough right now…hence the trade to try to upgrade that roster.
I expect Cashman will bring in a workhorse rental like Merrill Kelly and a strong reliever this deadline. He has an abundance of pitching prospects and we all know he loves to trade them. They are too good of a team not to make the playoffs and they have the talent to get hot during them. I like their chances if they can avoid injuries to Fried and Rodon. Which I know is asking a lot of Jobu.
Simple. Compare what Ben Williamson has given you to what Geno has delivered. It’s not rocket science.
Then figure in what Geno has left and what the prospects you have to give up are worth, and the math becomes more complicated. It isn’t rocket science, it’s baseball analytics
Sure upgrading offense and defense at a mess of a position is a zero difference maker. Wait there’s more, now that peraza is off 3rd we can actually use him to give volpe whatever mental or physical break he needs. The yanks have a top tier offense and can easily absorb 1 peraza type in the starting 9
And you’re the typical Yankee “fan” who thinks they’re gonna get an all star for garbage prospects in return.
Looks like a smart, solid move. great defender, some lefty power with that low wall and short porch.
God, you guys are insufferable. The Yankees need better 3B defense, which he provides (5.8 defensive fWAR). He’s an average base runner and a major league veteran with 7 seasons of experience in the league. Also, the Yankees gave up next to nothing to get him. This trade was a no-brainer.
He is exactly the 3rd baseman they needed. Why do some fans believe they need an all star at every position? Someone has to hit 8th/9th. I feel bad for the 2 pitching prospects that got traded. Cashman only seems to trade pitching prospects. Both of them had to be excited until they heard where they were going.
Seems like a pretty solid addition to me? Yeah he’s not Mike Schmidt, but then again who really is?
Yeah disagree with you 100%. The Yankees line-up and the defense today improved. Let’s see.
He’s a solid addition to the team, great defender with pretty good hitting ability
McMahon is a very streaky hitter, his month long slumps can cause a thousand deaths.
Excellent defender and maybe being surrounded by more talent will ignite him.
An upgrade for Yankees, but not a huge one.
Honestly I agree 👍
Definitely like this move here, at the end of the day the Yankees have improved.
I guess this is didn’t fix the bullpen?
What level prospects do yall think?
2 mids to upper-mids, nothing Top 10 or anything
Pretty great return for Col especially if they are not picking up any of the 16m owed to him in ’26 and ’27.
I expected Colorado to pick up a big part of his contract so he will be easier to trade when Lombard is ready. Perhaps Cashman is saving them for a pitchers or maybe he is thinking McMahon can take over for Goldy. I like the trade seems fair for all except the poor pitching prospects getting shipped to Colorado.
Aloha bradduh, notice the Yankees are getting so many years of control as well for Ryan, not giving up a ton because NY is taking on Ryan’s contract. Good for Colorado. I sure hope my Cubs FO doesn’t give arizona Owen Caissie or Wiggins for a rental in Suarez. The team needs pitching more than hitting. BTW I read an article that “proposed” Cease coming to Wrigley and Amaya our young catcher going back, lol! I like your Padres but not to give him up for a rental. And besides, hopefully SD gets on a roll, they’ll need Cease. Mahalo
kg… Aloha… Their need for starting pitching is dire. I know some are afraid of giving up guys like Cassie, Ballesteros, Alcantara, Wiggins.. others.. But they are most definitely in ‘win now’ mode and as the Tucker trade proved, Hoyer’s not afraid to deal if he thinks he’s getting a difference maker (s) in return. I believe they need 2 starters, a BP arm and a bench bat. Assad and Taillon are ok, but they’re not putting them over the top. And there’s other concerns. Boyd is already past the most innings he’s pitched since 2019 and Horton is in unknown territory as well. They will have to pace them if they want them to last til October… I’m not convinced he goes after Suarez. I wonder if he’ll try to pry Will Castro from the Twins. Solid bat and plays all over… Anyway, we’ll see. Gonna be interesting for sure!
Aloha rondon, agreed. Discernment is important because trading for various players doesn’t guarantee a championship too. Then if one trades away the best talent and tucker doesn’t come back, now Caissie, Alcantara, Wiggins are gone. If the FO thinks Lugo, Kelly can do the job in the rotation as rentals that shouldn’t cost the top prospects. And Jed better not trade away the best for rentals. But if the nationals were willing to trade Gore, I’d understand a top prospect there. Remember the Braves in 2021 I believe, they traded for a lot of rentals and made it work without giving up their farm. Anyhow, just because the “consensus” in the media is that the Cubs must go for it, doesn’t mean the organization has to be crazy in acquiring players for this 1 shot. And as much as I like tucker, I’m not worried if he leaves. Meaning his production isn’t so overwhelming that the team couldn’t contend next year, especially if the pitching is worked out. Take care now. Mahalo
If the cubs feel they are gonna resign Tucker then Cassie or Alcantara are gone. I wonder if the cubs would move happ and just stick Cassie in his place for a pitcher…maybe happ for cease. Who says no?
Aloha Chitown, well happ has a NTC and is very established in Chicago. He can turn down any trade. I think if tucker hasn’t been extended by now, he’s going into free agency. I definitely would not trade Caissie and if possible Alcantara too, as he’s a better defender. Tucker is good but his production is not massive like Soto’s was in his walk off year with the Yankees, he had a WAR of 7.9. For what the Cubs gave up for Tuck, he’s not coming close to that production, right now he’s at 4.2. His numbers are actually down some both defense and offense. A theory of mind is that Tucker went from a nice environmentally controlled stadium to the natural outside elements in Wrigley. His defense is overall -2 OAA and his production is better on the road than at Wrigley. He’s profiling as a future dh. Again very good but not $400-500mil good. He probably wants to go to an easier park for hitting and defense. Wrigley is at the bottom. I think the FO has to plan on him leaving. The offense will be okay. They need to work on pitching but not overpay for arms in the short run. Take care. Mahalo
The prospects are a red herring anyway
When did Suárez start spelling his name like this? Beats a poke in the eye…but not by much. Ahahahahahahaha!
According to MLB Pipeline’s new list, Herring is the Yankees #8 prospect and Grosz is 21. Solid return for the Rockies.
Both prospects are a long way from Colorado for immediate impact. Looks good for both teams.
Thanx rct, nice return for the Rox.
According to the article, Baseball America ranks Herring #17, and Grosz is not in the top 30. The biggest thing they got was out of the rest of McMahon’s contract, which is still good.
Interesting that the Yankees have to give up anybody, while taking on that contract for a guy who can’t hit much better than Volpe.
They didn’t give up anybody…they just gave up somebody!
Solid move by Cashman
Bathroom jokes.
Wow didn’t predict that one
Please tell me this is sarcasm
He’s SoCal centric.
Suarez to the Cubs?
Suarez to the Cubs would be surprising. If Padres move people it will be to upgrade their ML team not to get prospects. Who on the ML roster for the Cubs would help the Padres in exchange for Suarez?
@james wrong Suarez, I think they meant Eugenio not Robert haha
Nope, Suarez to Reds. D-backs want pitching. Reds have it. Cubs don’t.
Ryan McMahon’s xHR is the lowest out of any stadium in the MLB at Yankee Stadium!
Cheers Red Sox Fans!
I’m curious how this works. I thought Yankee Stadium was generally quite HR-friendly (Baseball Savant has it 3rd highest for HRs). Is there something about McMahon’s power profile and the specific park dimensions that cause this?
@MeowMeow Believe it has to do with his batted ball profile. With the short porch in RF Yankee Stadium plays way up for HR by lefty pull hitters but neutral for righties, and McMahon’s spray chart shows half his homers have been hit to the opposite field or straightaway center, only a couple down the right field line.
Ah, that makes sense. I forget that LF in Yankee Stadium isn’t as close in, especially for a lefty hitting the opposite way.
They’ll have him for 2 seasons after this one still, so here’s hoping they aren’t able to meaningfully change his swing to generate more pull-side power.
What about his xbOFA? That is a much better predictor of future performance.
BofA can’t be a real stat lol
I heard McMahon has a huge xRAR albeit with low dAXE and wXAR…
When do the Rockies ever play at Yankee Stadium?
Every other year now
When calculating expected home runs I think for the most part they just take the distance the ball was hit and overlay it on the stadium. I don’t think they actually have to play there in order for it to be calculated.
Last August.
Thank goodness trade season is finally on because I love trades and I was so depressed because there was no trades happening now there is!!
Based Trade Enjoyer
This site now lives up to its name
No it doesn’t. It’s Trade Rumors, not Trade Reports!
This article is technically a rumor because both teams haven’t announced it yet therefore it isn’t official
Yes!
You are correct sir!
Hi-yo
I feel bad for Herring, he has really good pitching stats in the minors rn but he’s going to the ROCKIES… so that wont last.
Thought the same. Two more pitching prospects trudge off to pitching purgatory in Col.
oh no most Yankee fans will not like it. Rockies fans won’t either. But it is an improvement let’s hope we didn’t give up much. I guess AZ was asking for too much
Yankees were hot on Suarez’ trail, but you have to assume the asking price is astronomical if they pivoted to McMahon this early.
Plays better defense and allows them to improve in other areas with the cheaper cost
solaris602 and Wire to wire 2024
Two happy Yankee fans, well me too. Allright lets go!! Yanks are not done, pitching next
McMahon has two more years under contract at $16 million per year. Yankees might have valued that over Suarez being a rental.
Yankees fan that loves it. We have a 3rd baseman that plays the position well and can contribute offensively. He won’t be relied on as much as he was in Colorado so that might make him relax more.
Solid player. NY fans probably hoped for Suarez but this guy definitely makes that team better.
Suarez has terrible defense metrics and high SO. Yanks have enough of that.
McMahon leads the NL in strikeouts.
And? Riley Greene leads the AL is strikeouts.
Worry about your own team and who they’re selling (again).
Riley Greene actually produces though.
Have to assume this takes them out of the Suarez running… come on, Mariners, capitalize on this.
Question is – does SEA strike now and wildly overpay AZ, or do they wait it out until the deadline to see what Dbacks are willing to settle for?
Seattle would’ve already acquired Suarez in the naylor deal if they were still in on him so I’m assuming they balked at his price and are less interested right now
Cubs and tigers should be the frontrunners right now with reds as a surprise candidate
@sad- I disagree. We were never acquiring both in the same deal. Geno has the most value of any position player, so:
1) AZ likely wouldn’t want to package him with another player unless it leads to an elite prospect return.
2) They’re going to milk the bidding until someone overpays or they’ll wait until deadline day. No reason to rush moving him. Naylor is easier to move.
3) Jude, Kramer, and Drayer say we’re still “aggressively pursuing” him and remain one of his top suitors.
Reports everywhere say Suarez is still the M’s target. They kept their highly rated top 10 prospects, so lots of ammo left.
I’m thinking that Depoto and Hazen have already have a agreement that Seattle will have last say if the D’Backs have a deal in place from another team it all depends how bad do the Mariners want Suarez that they could go higher . Remember the D’Backs and Seattle have made many trades together.
We got Naylor and as much as I might want Suarez, I am ok waiting and not overpaying to get him for a couple months. Go get us a reliever first.
I agree, Mike. I want Geno but I want Jerry to remain steadfast in his process. No need to overpay for 2 months.
I think Seattle swung and missed on Suarez and pivoted to Naylor instead.
Is it possible Seattle wasnt interested in a player they already had, and who led the world in strikeouts for the time he was there?
I don’t really understand this thought process. The Dbacks absolutely have no rush on moving Geno. Why would acquiring one player take them out on the other? FWIW, all the local beat writers say we’re still “aggressively pursuing” him and he remains the top focus.
@bucsfan- No, not really given all the local reporting. Geno is our “top target.” Can’t imagine all 3 of our best beat writers are being fooled at once. That’s never really happened. Unless they’re purposefully providing misdirection.
Geno could still be our target but we might not be willing to overpay
I agree with that, I just don’t think trading for Naylor eliminates us from the Geno running. There’s no rush for the Dbacks to move Geno given he has 12 suitors, but they were probably motivated to move Naylor for an acceptable package since he’s an expiring guy with limited suitors who they wouldn’t keep and QO. At least with Geno, they can slap him with a QO if nobody meets their price.
Ryan McMahon minus the Coors Factory doesn’t leave much but he only has to outperform Peraza or Vivas.
The defense alone is already a huge improvement over Peraza and Vivas.
Good. As a Brewer fan, I didn;t want McMahon. Too many strikeouts, not enough upside. Let’s hope we get Suarez instead of the Cubs.
If you were a real Brewers fan you would know we don’t trade for REAL upgrades
Watching the Brewers vs the Mariners this week was so impressive. The Brewers are such a fundamentally sound team with great pitching. They don’t need a flashy name, just a piece or two that fits the system there.
The Yankees replace LeMahieu with his former teammate. Interesting to think about.
I’d would have considered trading Volpe for Hayes. Lombard looks like he has more upside unless Lombard is the Future 3B.
Yeah, how about the Yankees STOP playing guys out of position? I’m all for trading Volpe and bringing Lombard Jr. up to play SHORTSTOP.
i mean i guess lol
Griffin Herring is a very solid pithing prospect. You’d have to think the ask for Suárez is exorbitant if the Yankees pivoted to McMahon and still seemingly overpaid
Yanks plugged the gap at third, and can still go after Suarez in the off season if they want. Now they can focus on the pitching. I think that is where they make a bigger move.!
I don’t hate the move for McMahon as he’s a clear upgrade over Peraza but it makes the lineup even more lefty heavy. I don’t expect them to target Suarez in the offseason, especially with McMahon under contract though 2027. He seemed like a clear rental option
The bat boy is a clear upgrade over Peraza.
Griffin Herring pretty much came out of nowhere and has only one MLB level pitch. The Yankees seem to create these guys every year.
I get that but we’ve seen plenty of guys improve their secondary pitches over time in this system. Just look at Schlittler. I’m not against moving Herring, I just thought he would have been involved in a deal for a better player. I actually kind of like this move now after thinking about it for a bit. It goes to show that this is indeed an extreme sellers market
Hey, the Rockies finally made a move that makes sense for the organization!
A little shocked the Rockies actually traded him. No team clutches their homegrowns harder than the Rockies.
John Mozaliak on line one.
Rockies ownership did not like the results they were getting from the contract they signed McMahon to. He is not a contact hitter strikes out way too much.
Herring is a very nice young prospect
Coulda been a star with yanks
Doomed in colorado
He was never going to be a star anywhere. Mid round guy the Yankees developed. He only has one MLB level pitch. Bullpen guy.
He definitely upgrades the defense at 3B dramatically and keeps Jazz at second and Peraza’s anemic bat is removed completely.
And nobody is happier than Ryan McMahon. He finally gets to play for an MLB team! Lefty bat in Yankee Stadium? What could go wrong? Nettles redux.
You don’t know that. He might have loved living in Colorado.
He might have also been indifferent about living in Colorado! Only he knows.
if you stink in Colorado, nobody really notices. went to a game there this year and woman in front of me was reading a book during the game. Will be interesting to see how McMahon reacts to the change.
a) There was a woman in the stadium
b) She can read
Unfortunately his batted ball profile suggests that Yankee stadium won’t be that great for him. He doesn’t really pull the ball that much.
😣
Somehow Colorado got a better package for a lesser player than what AZ got for Naylor
Mc Mahon is not a rental.
Depends on whose prospect rankings you believe. Going by Baseball America, whose analysis I prefer to MLB Pipeline, the Dbacks got #13 and 19 from a strong Mariners system, the Rockies #17 and unranked from the Yankees.
We’re saved! World Series here we come! (its a guy with a .217 average and 92 OPS+ and plays at Coors on top of that)
Yankees fundamentals are bad and they frequently have defensive gaffes, especially from the left side of the infield. This will help with that.
Sure, but not enough to make a meaningful difference on the seasons result and not enough to ship off your 8th best prospect. Hes not a needle mover just because it allows Jazz to go back to 2nd. But hey at least he plays 3B!
He is a needle mover cause he plays GG defense. And he has been hitting better since July. You don’t need him to an all-star. At worst, he is the same player which is still valuable because of his defense. All for mid-pitching prospects.
OPS+ is park ADJUSTED.
Louder for the people in the back!!!
I like this move for the Yanks. McMahon is better than Suarez defensively and will cost A LOT less.
If they are taking on his whole contract then giving up anything is an overpay.
Why even acquire pitching prospects? Just get high-ceiling hitters. The fact that throughout the entire Rockies’ existence, they only have like 3 memorable pitchers should tell them that they need to put like 95% of their focus just into hitting.
Very strong defensively and I think Yankees fans will be satisfied with his offensive performance. Give him a chance, he’ll help the team.
Glad to see the Yankees are out of the market on Suarez.
Def not a game changer.
A little fishy.
McMahon leads all of MLB in strikeouts and has a career .216 away from Coors as well as a career OPS+ of under 100. However, he can play a solid 3B and has some pop.
At least the send away wasn’t major. Under the circumstances, decent upside for a modest sendoff. In this market, not terrible.
Suarez is the FAR superior player but we need PITCHING much more than another bat!
Seattle Mariner fans just breathed a collective sigh of relief. Thank you, New York Yankees.
Good glove some pop in bat .. additional needs 2 RPers & a SPer …
Starting Pitcher-er
The Yankees new number 9 hitter
Yanks are stuck with his 32 million dollar contract for 26 and 27
This is a very bad trade for the yanks
For a 3B that should give you around 3 WAR, that is a bargain these days.
NO way he gives you 3WAR
Confirmed Geno to the Ms
They’re gonna do 2 separate deals within a week? I think not.
Don’t call him Trader Jerry for nothin’! If he gets Suarez soon enough, he might have time to triple back for a reliever.
It’s either Mariners or Reds, it would not surprise me if Hazen and Depoto already have an agreement and how bad do the Mariners want Suarez. Hazen knows what he wants, he may not even trade Suarez and try to resign him if he don’t get what he wants.
I’m just more commenting on the fact that they would have to complete 2 separate deals from the same 2 teams within one week. It just seems unlikely that they would try and work out another deal when they could have just added onto the Naylor trade and got both Suarez AND Naylor.
So I’m thinking it’s the Cubs, Mets, Brewers or Reds. Highest bidder wins.
Interesting. While his career OPS is 0.743 his away career OPS is only 0.664 including 0.589 this season in 204 plate appearances. Weak bat.
Lot of teams looking for a 3rd baseman .. RP & SPing .. come on Cash keep it going
I figure Arizona is probably asking crazy for suarez
With that said you can get coloumbe and Joe Ryan from the twins
Rockies have to be eating some of that money
I doubt it
Yeah. The Yanks taking it all on. Gives them 2.5 years of an overpriced vet at 3B. But they can maximize him hopefully.
Solid defense and will see more good pitches to hit in the Bronx. This trade will work in the Yankees favor.
Wooooot! Yes, very good 3rd baseman at a not high cost prospect wise. Was on my offseason wishlist.
Hey, bro, I so hope you’re right. I think he will be a good upgrade over what they have, I just hope he’s what we need. I’ve heard a lot about him being a great clubhouse guy, so that’s good.
Love nothing more than for him to come here and bring some thunder with him.
1. We need a solid defender out there, we’re getting that.
2. The dude should be a natural fit for the stadium, too, offensively. Like I said elsewhere, he isnt expected to be THE GUY here so he can fit in better.
3. Yes, by all accounts, a good dude. Always appreciated.
He sounds like he could be a good Yankee. Fingers crossed he does well and locks up that position for a few years. Heck of a deal if so.
I just wish we could’ve included Boone in the deal….
lol
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
Might be a slight overpayment. Herring looks like he might be a solid player. McMahon is one of the best defensive third basemen though so they are probably getting him for that reason. Suárez would’ve cost a lot more.
Two months of Suarez would’ve cost more than 26 months of McMahon? I mean, maybe. Especially since he has $32M remaining. But normally, long-term assets cost less than rentals.
You are nuts if you think this was an overpay. Herring was another mid round(6th) college guy the Yankees drafted and developed. He only throws in the low 90s. He basically only has one MLB level pitch which is a sweeper, and his best hope for making the majors and sticking there is as a reliever.
I dont think it’s an overpay and honestly could be a steal.
Nice prospects for maybe Jake Bird. But for their GG franchise 3B, they couldn’t aim a little higher? What a bad organization.
Herring is having a good year, metrics back it up so I’ll say one good prospect one decent one. Imagine being that close to Yankees stadium and then being told you’re getting traded to the Rockies. To go pitch in the firmament haha prob thought he was being punked.
maybe next year
Hmmm…. Batting average .248 at Coors, .189 on the road. HR 2:1 Coors vs road. We’ll see how this goes!!
If NYY want Cease they better act quick ..
Chase Headley 2.0
Yankees got a GG level 3B to shore up a glaring need, with left handed pop that should play well at Yankee Stadium, with an affordable contract for the next 2 1/2 seasons, and only cost them 2 prospects that aren’t any higher than Doubke A ball. If you think this was a bad trade you don’t know baseball.
No Geno for you! Hahaha!
I thought Steinbrenner didn’t want to add a lot of payroll now they have this guy. I’m sure both these prospects could have gotten Rosario or IKF on cheaper deals.
I despise Cashman but it is a solid trade. No big prospects are going and McMahon is above average defensively. In that lineup and park he may get a boost offensively. He could be a poor man’s Scott Brosius.
The only other two 3B that look to be attainable are Garcia and Suarez and they are going to come with a high cost.
Yankees might use Rice to go get a SPer
I didn’t realize he lead the league in strikeouts. This guy is making 16M per the next 2 years also. Cashman must have really hated what he heard on the phone regarding Suarez. Or is this about defense moreso? NY’s defense has been shaky lately but idk about this one.
Yankee fans seem mixed in the comments as well.
He seems like a pretty marginal upgrade with his bat. The Yankees will be paying $33.6 (after 110% tax if they remain in the top tier) each in ’26 and ’27 for him.
I guess you gotta pay for good defense these days. That’s still a lot less than say Swanson or Arenado on the left side.
Back on the Cashman merry-go-round
The overarching issue, imho, is that McMahon is exactly the type of hitter Cashman always goes for: high K, low BA, high potential for HR. Cashman is stuck on the TTO guys. As Derek from Pinstripe Territory said, Cashman tries to acquire stats instead of baseball players.
The problem I have with this is Cashman has had ample time and opportunity with a $300MM payroll to get a 3Bman better than what we are again settling for, halfway through the season.
Yes, McMahon is supposed to be much better defensively, but don’t forget, he also has led the NL in errors at 3B a couple times. Volpe won’t help that.
Our biggest issue is that the Yankees are far too late to the party, yet again, and now doing whatever they can just to squeak into the WC.
We desperately need changes at manager and GM for the organization to move forward.
If the prospects saved from not acquiring Suarez are used to get a decent starting pitcher, I’m OK with McMahon as an incremental trade over the next few days.
Yeah, I mean, it’s a pick of which weaknesses you want in a limited player pool. If McMahon brings a GG defense, I’m good with this out of the candidates. I worry about his errors in the past though with McMahon having to use his range to pick up Volpe’s slack.
I really thought Castro was the best overall choice, although he may not be available, or they may have wanted too high a price.
Mostly, I just can’t tolerate Boone or Cashman anymore. With our luck, Boone will have McMahon slated for 2B, put Jazz back at 3B, and tell us they’re elite.
Not crazy about not getting Suarez but at least Peraza won’t be getting more ABs. Vivas needs to go down.
Can’t be worse offensively than Peraza and is probably equal or better defensively for 2 pitchers who may never sniff the majors. That’s a win in my book. 3B may be the 2nd weakest position offensively right now so can’t expect too much
“…though while playing his home games in the hitters’ haven of Coors Field”
My brother in Christ, WHAT kind of stadium do you think YANKEE STADIUM IS!??
#15 for overall offense per Statcast park factors, compared to #1 for Coors. Yankee Stadium plays up for lefty pull hitters who can take advantage of the short porch in right, but only a couple of McMahon’s homers this season have been down the RF line, with half to the opposite field or CF.
Coors Field (Colorado Rockies):
.
Known for its high altitude and thin air, Coors Field allows baseballs to travel further, leading to more home runs and higher offensive output.
Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox):
.
The short left field fence (the “Green Monster”) makes it easier for left-handed hitters to hit home runs.
Chase Field (Arizona Diamondbacks):
.
The retractable roof and hot temperatures in Phoenix can make for a very hitter-friendly environment, especially in the summer months.
Great American Ball Park (Cincinnati Reds):
.
This stadium has a reputation for being very hitter-friendly, with a high park factor and relatively short fences.
Target Field (Minnesota Twins):
.
While not as extreme as some other parks, Target Field is still considered a hitter-friendly environment with a higher
Couldn’t even get them to take Peraza? Brutal, Cashman. You should of paid for Eugenio…
Eugenio is a butcher at 3B
No way. He is a 35 years old rental that is one of the streakiest hitters in MLB. It’s awesome when he is on a hot streak, and unwatchable when he is on a cold streak. It’s not like the Yankee’s 30plus year competitive window is closing. No need to mortgage the future for a bat when this roster needs bullpen and rotation help to really push for a WS.
Gates are wide open for Suarez, Jed. Get ‘er done!
“At first glance, that might suggest he can only hit in Denver and will fall to pieces in a new jersey. ”
When did the Yankees move to Jersey?
Comparing him to LeMaheiu is ridiculous lol
Might end up being a $16M/yr designated fielder, but it has been so bad on the left side that it’s a clear upgrade at 3rd base. Does it move the needle much, in isolation probably no.
Actually $33.6M/Yr with the CBT.
Now trade Escarra and Beeter for Cease and look to see what Sandy Alcantara will cost? They can then move some starters like Warren to pen.
A backup catcher and middle reliever are not close to getting you either of those pitchers.
Pretty stiff give up for a guy who leads the majors in K’s and a 92 OPS+.
Yankees won’t miss either one of those prospects. The one kid has had a good year in A+, but as a former college arm he should. He is a back of the rotation piece at best. The other guy is a reliever long term. NYY got a player certainly with warts, but he’s a legit great defender at 3B and despite the strikeouts, he’ll get to 22-25 homers every year. Heck, maybe in a better lineup he’ll have an uptick.
To be fair, he hit those home runs playing half of his games at Coors. Due to his batted ball profile it seems kind of unlikely he will even be able to take full advantage of the short porch in right either. I’m guessing around 15 homers per year for NY.
I love when the Yankees make bad trades. They didn’t really give up anything but they also didn’t bring anything in.
I’m good with this. Now add a Kelly/Gallen type SP, maybe a mid leverage RP and roll with the upside of the roster for the rest of the year.
I’m curbing my excitement. Typical Cashman trade–take on a lot of salary for an older player. This is how they never get materially better, and constantly have poor draft-pick positions. Ugh.
He’s 30yo! Look up information before commenting
Thirty is not young….i looked it up before commenting
What does that even mean? You wanted the Yankees to lose games to get a better draft pick? LOL
I am sure Aaron Judge would love that. Also every player you are getting at the trade deadline is older. Suarez is 33. McMahon is actually kind of young at 30. Teams don’t trade 25 year olds. They trade older players at the deadline. Also the Yankees literally made the WS last year. You are acting like they lose every year. You are all over the place lol.
Of course I don’t want them to lose games to get better draft picks. But I would like to see a quality farm system. That’s the great thing about Judge–he’s home grown
Trade Grisham for bullpen help.
Looks like Rockies did ok. Both pitchers, especially the lefty look like they could be MLB starters…
Herring is a bullpen guy. Fastball sits at only 90mph. Didn’t add velocity like most Yankees farm guys. His only good pitch is a sweeper and hitters above A ball will lay off it. Sweepers are death in low level minors. The other guy is a lottery ticket. Fastball sits around 93mph. Best pitch is a gyro slider. Again, looks more like a reliever. More than likely never moves beyond AAA.
Both are A ball guys so they are really both lottery tickets rather than anything you can plan on.
Should be a nice addition defensively and he provides some flexibility.
Have to wonder about the Coors Field hangover effect for the next week but after that he should be a decent enough with the bat to help on that side of the ball.
The real story here is – THE ROCKIES MADE A DEADLINE TRADE!!
Now give him DJ LeMahieu’s uni #26…”baseball symmetry”.
Why didnt Cashman get Colorado to cover some of the contract?
Because they know he’s stuck and desperate. Always being too late to fix your mistakes gives other teams the trade advantage, yet somehow the Yankees think it doesn’t….
Cashman strikes again .. another vanilla pudding trade that doesn’t make the Yankees better or worse .. he doesn’t bowl for strikes he bowls for spares
Getting a GG level 3B makes the Yankees better. What exactly would have been a strike? Tell me what YOU would have done? Trading your farm system for a 3B rental who is an awful fielder?
One interpretation – The asking price on Suarez was too high.
Just the New York mentality- hits home runs but really nothing else. The kind that Toronto will feast on in the recent series, you had 7 homers and Toronto 1, and the score ended up 8-4. So now, maybe 7-5, and you still lose . I guess that’s worth about $14 million a year!! Really a smart , playoff addition…
I guess you are totally ignoring he also has a glove. An elite one.
McMahon is going do better playing in the Yankees lineup. The Rockies lineup had 0 protection. Good move by Cashman
Did they look at his home/road splits? He literally only hits at all at Coors Field.. Granted the Yankees have a joke of a park too, but still, he’s not even worth the money he’s owed let alone prospects.
Oh well couldn’t have happened to a nicer team. Welcome back to the Mariners Geno.
@OlSalty they said the same thing about DJ before he became a Yankee. He put up the exact same stats that he did in Coors but suddenly he went from average to elite. Park Adjusted stats don’t matter
Herring looks nasty based on those MiLB stats. McMahon isn’t the best player out there, but he puts up very similar numbers each year, so you know what you’re getting
Herring’s fastball sits around 90mph. He gets hitters out in A ball with a sweeper. Sweepers are dominating lower level minor league hitters. That is why you have to look beyond the stats with minor league pitchers. The Yankees sold incredibly high on him.
Good hitting in Colorado and no place else!
Glad Detroit didn’t trade for him. Tigers don’t need another high strike out player. Have to many now. Love his defense and the ability to stay healthy and play lots of games in multiple positions but way to many strikeouts.
zOMG it isn’t Mike Schmidt. Yankees must be losers. :/
The yankees have won a lot of championshios with a good field, mediocre hit third baseman. Brosius, Boyer and Nettles to name a few. And even with McMahon’s mediocre offensive numbers, he’s still am upgrade offensively. But he’s another left handed hitter. They HAVE to find some right handed bats.
The Yankee lineup is weighed down with right-handed hitting on a daily basis. Yankees crave left-handed hitting to take advantage of the short porch.
Cashman does love to pick up the middling player on a bloated deal. He seems to truly love to do that- Bobby Abreu, Stephen Drew, even under the radar guys like Chase Headley, etc. etc.
And admittedly they do tend to get surplus value out of those guys relative to where their career was at just prior, but even so.
McMahon is paid exactly what he is worth.
He’s slightly overpaid at this point. Maybe not overall on the AAV of his deal, but his current salaries are absolutely a bit steep for his production and consistency and his abysmal average, etc.
This was a consolation prize / yet another quasi-reclamation project for the Yankees.
Fire Cashman now!
Yankees are going to need alot more than MCMahon …. Like a new manager and GM.
As a disappointed Os fan with not much to root for other than the Yankees not doing well, I love this deal. A guy who has been hitting .240 with about 180 Ks the last 3 years while playing for Colorado and its .217 this year at an age where the decline often begins and they owe 16M next year and the year after where if I read it right they will be taxed 110% if they dont get under the threshold, yes please, I will take that all day for the other team.
I watched a lot of the TOR NYY series and the Yankees fielding was atrocious so I can see the appeal on that level. But another cant hit power only major swing and miss guy is the last thing their lineup needs. The thing about those kind of lineups where close to everyone is a .250 or worse hitter but can hit 20 or more home runs is it can work in the regular season and get you wins and a playoff spot but then those guys are playing the best teams in the league’s 1s and 2s and that is when the 180K low average guy is going to be overmatched a lot.
Its not just a Yankees thing. I remember watching Os playoff games in the mid 2010s and the elite pitching gets those guys out. Most of the 20 plus HRs probably came at the hands of lesser SPs. Volpe and Wells probably not having 2 HR games against Skubal Crochet and Logan Gilbert. Probably more like 2 Ks.
On the tax…It’s only money and not mine! I would rather pay money than prospects. Low risk low reward deal for sure, if you watched the Toronto series then you know what trouble the Yankees are having catching and throwing the baseball. They are scoring plenty of runs if they can catch the GD baseball and throw it to first base somewhere close to where he can catch it.
With McMahon off the market, the Cubs and Brewers are now competing against one another to:
a. Sign Suarez, and
b. Keep the other team from signing him!
Let the bidding begin and may it please end in overpayment!
Some GMs just want to watch the world (Eugenio Suarez’ trade value) burn
Nice to see the Red Sox front office working overtime… for the Yankees
All the hate from outside Yankeeland crashed the MLBTR server.
I suppose I see it as if you spend 16M or 30M after tax for a 3B or any of the 9 guys you put in a lineup, then you may feel you addressed something and that is one less guy you add. Then you have to play him or just hurt the team eating the money as they did with Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks, sometimes facing the player while paying them. I hear ya on money not prospects.
As far as scoring runs, back to what I was saying, its going to come down to who you score them against and last two series against Toronto it did not look promising.
Also, I think it will come down to do teams know how to manage and control Judge. Maybe every AB forward should be an intentional walk and I dont think that would be good for the Yankees. It is alarming how many pitchers are willing to throw pitches with very little movement over the plate close to his waistline. He almost never does not crush those. Bassitt threw one of those and Judge watched. Then he threw the exact same pitch. HR. If teams can just throw him pitches he struggles with a little more or walk him, the scoring drops off a bit, especially against good teams and good pitching.
Mike Francesa got his wish.
I’d imagine being a left handed bat, the short porch in Yankee stadium is gonna be a god send for him. anyone else think his power numbers will improve?
His approach would need to change for that to happen. Statcast shows he would have 13 HR this season had he played all his games in Yankee Stadium, the fewest of any park. Only a couple of his homers so far have been down the right field line, with half going either opposite field or to CF.
I like it. Given the options being mentioned the most i came around to wanting mcmahon. He’s an excellent 3rd baseman and by all accounts has plus plus makeup. We need more high baseball IQ types and he fits the mold. I think his hitting will be fine enough and he’ll settle in around 230/330/430. For anyone thst actually read the above article it mentions how rockies once traded don’t necessarily follow their “away” splits to their new team. There’s way more variables than that
baffled by this
can’t believe they’re prepared to pay him 32M over the next 2 years
With the CBT it will be $33.6M/Yr,
Yankee stadium has a short porch in rf for left handed hitters. He’ll adjust well.
Nice move for the Yankees. Plugged a gaping hole.
Great….Another .215 hitter. Just what they need. Hard to follow this team anymore with their leadership.
As Yankee fans, do you believe that McMahon was the Yanks first choice or is the asking price for E. Suarez is that steep? The Mariners and the Brewers have the farm system to get him if they offer enough. Do the Cubs? Maybe.
I think the D-backs asked for Spencer Jones and we said no. That is too much for two months of Suárez.
Who cares….the Yankees acquired McMahon….let’s start there….
BigRedMachine cares. And McMahon wasn’t acquired in a vacuum. All of these decisions are made in context of other deals and players.
Thank you Larkraxm
Suarez will cost more, but he’s also awful defensively and i don’t think acquiring another thumper does much for an already top tier offense. The defensive downgrade plus likely inflated cost of acquisition made mcmahon the easy call.
So Suarez to Sea or Det?
Charlie Hayes 2.0
so he’ll catch the last out of the world series?
count me in!
Cool now trade our Owner for the Waltons! Atleast they’ll try to win!!
Grosz Herring? I’m sure those two would rather eat Surströmming daily than be Rockies pitching prospects.
Yankees need to either put Jones in a trade or bring him up to the Majors there’s no reason for him to be playing in the minors
they’ll keep him down and hope he keeps raking for another 6 days so they can trade high
addendum: taking on mcmahon’s contract suggests that cashman trades while high
Exactly what the Yank$ needed badly and it came at the cost of a #17 45 grade high A pitcher plus a scratch off? That’s a really lame return. Naylor didn’t bring back much either.
Thought it would be a sellers’ market, turns out its all for the buyers.
Diamondbacks 🐍 want more for Suarez.
Solid move. True, you could still do better at 3rd but you could also do alot worse. A lefty swinger in Yankee Stadium, we’ll see.
Solid return for Colorado and a Contract you knkw the Mariners was NEVER going to take on… good luck in the Bronx…
As a Giant’s fan watching McMahon for years with the Rockies I’m happy he gets to go play with a contender even if it’s with the Yankees. He’s a real solid pickup. Really good defender and always been a solid bat. He’s also a good clubhouse presence. Always seemed like a true pro. He’s going to help the Yankees.
I have enjoyed watching Mac play defense for many years now. I always wanted him to be better on offense and at times he was. But he is notoriously streaky at the plate. He will have a month where he strikes out almost every time at the plate and then follow that up with a month of looking like an All Star. But throughout all of the struggles, he is one of the best defenders in the game. Yankee fans will love watching him bare hand bunts or little squibbers and throw out the runner by a step on plays that would be a single to most others.
Between Arenado and McMahon, we Rockies fans have been spoiled with defense at third for a while now. In between the two we had a short run of Elehuris Montero who might as well not even had a glove. I am not expecting immediate Gold Glove defense from the next third baseman, but I really hope we get a competent one.
McMahon is a terrible hitter outside Denver. His good defense and occasional power made him a bad addiction for the Rockies. You’ll benefit from making room for a better young player. By next July the Yankees will be looking to unload him. Meanwhile, you just picked up a seriously promising young starter in Griffen Herring. The way he’s pitching it looks like he’ll move up quickly. I won’t be surprised if he’s ready for a Sept call up by next year and a rotation slot for ’27.
I have watched 150+ Rockies games each year since 2013. Please do not tell me what Rockies players are like by reading some stats. You cannot tell how good a player is by reading some numbers on a website. At the very least you cannot tell better than someone that has watched him play almost every game of his career. His defense is not “good,: it is spectacular. As far as Herring goes, until he plays in the majors, he is just a name on a page. There have so many “can’t miss” guys that dominated A ball that did nothing in the bigs. He may be great, but I take the wait and see approach rather than assuming he will beat the odds.
His away stats are UGLY!!!!!
maybe FT in NY might make him more stable than going from coors to other places.
Now the Yankees can finally trade that CAN’T MISS prospect, Oswald Peraza (Ozzie Smith Jr.) for a few ace starting pitchers. LOL
Wonder if that means Seattle outbid them for Geno? Would be nice to see ownership spend the money. Means they are realizing that the post season can pay more than just a close run to them. Those playoff games can be worth a lot.
raise the ceiling trades >>> raise the floor trades
McMahon is barely an OK hitter. He’s OK as a 3rd baseman too. Yankees can afford to waste money.
this is going to be the trade that ends up getting Cashman fired… we should have made the Rockies eat some of that money
Now trhey need to find a shortstop.
McMahon is headed to a better organization while he is on a resurgent offensive hot streak. DJ was shocked at the difference in how the NY organization helped prepare players offensively, and McMahon will benefit from the same. Ryan was GG caliber at 3B, and even filled 2B at that level a couple of years ago.
Once he detoxes from the Coors altitude hangover effect, expect a much better offensive player, plus continued GG-caliber defense.
Win win.
A for Yankees. I don’t know what he can do for sure outside of coors but I think he can be an above average hitter and with that defense that’s well worth 16m. Defense gives him a great floor. And I wouldn’t cry over those 2 pitchers. Not near MLB ready. Reliever risk even likely. Easily replaced.
C for Colorado. Just a fair meh return. Nothing exciting but as expected. 2 more arms for system. Did he want to be traded? Didn’t owner like him? Fans liked him? I would have just kept him if this was the return.
He’s a lefty pull hitter with pop and plays good D. Good for YS. There aren’t a lot of teams which want him for $32M owed for two more seasons with a 100 OPS+ ceiling. He’s not moving the needle going forward for Colorado so why not spend that money on lottery tickets.
In six games at Coors Field coming out of the All-Star break, McMahon blistered the Twins and Cardinals by going 6-for-20 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, four walks and six strikeouts while batting fourth and fifth in the order.
That answers the previous question of where McMahon batted in the order recently.
Glad he didn’t go to my team. I wouldn’t want him.
Wow! I really thought they were all in on Suarez. I’m sure the D-Backs woulda preferred the Yankees waiting a few days before pulling the trigger on McMahon. One less bidder to drive up the price.
I’m sure they asked for Jones in exchange for Suárez, and we passed. That is the right choice. Even if we include spencer Jones in another deal, he is too valuable to give up for a 35-year-old rental.
Like this move for NYY.
Guess Suarez is still available for Seattle?
Of course he is, Mariners have the Best Farm in Baseball, but that’s why we should Pass on him and get 2 Bullpen Arms Instead… NAYLOR and his contact Rate swas the 1 to get for Sure… and 1st base was a Black Hole for us!!! I think McMahon actually does well.witht he Yankees Lineup protection and shirt left porch
You figure it would take more than 2 lottery ticket prospects to get a guy who is still controllable for the next 2 years. I’m not saying he is worth Lombard, Dominguez, or Rice, but maybe 3 prospects or at least 2 with a guy in the top 10.
Say what you want about his hitting. The Yankees are a better team today then they were yesterday. Good move.
Willing to bet his numbers improve within a better lineup
I think he’ll hit in the Bronx short left porch and All… especially with the Lineup protection 💯
Outside Denver he hit .215 w no power. Orlando Cabrera is a better hitter. So McMahon is not winning us a ring and there’s no place for him on this club next year. For that Cashman gave away a seriously promising young starter in Griffen Herring. One of the top NL ROY candidates should be at 3B – Caleb Durbin. But Cashman threw him and Nestor away for Devin Williams. There’s a litany of bad trades Cashman has made over the years that, if undone, would’ve resulted in a ring or two since ’09. But his “win now” approach never goes quite far enough to bring in the veterans they need yet costs them the young talent that would build a championship core. He’s niether fish nor fowl. And that’s why they always come up a day late and a dollar short of a championship club.
Yankees had no choice, word is Arizona wants 2 top100 players for GENO!!! LMAO 😆 they’re Asking for SLOAN and ARROYO… F#CK OFF!!! After we gave him to you for VARGAS!!! on a CHEAP 2Yr contract… 50 games and you want our Best Pitcher and HITTER LMAO 🤣 Dipoto does that deal Ownership should FIRE him IMMEDIATELY after he already has shown his Incompetence on the FIRST TRADE!!! Scott has saved his Job so many times in draft its ridiculous 🙄
I like this trade because now cubs have less competition for Suarez
I hope you guys get him or TEXAS because then Texas Loses the prospects and still misses a WC 🤣
I really like this move for the Yankees, let’s us deal with 3b defense, lets Jazz play 2nd everyday without worry at least for a bit, and this guy’s offense can’t be as bad as Peraza and Vivas Estrada etc. yes I’m including Estrada because he’s been an option here and there far too many times while he was a Yankee.
They didn’t give up much for him either and now their free to hone in on a deal for pitching needs. I honestly don’t see Jones panning out in the Majors so I’m fine with them getting what they can for him, just not sure I’d be okay with a trade like Jones and one of Lagrange, schlittler,Hess, Hampton for what would likely be a rental.
The real tragedy is the Tigers turning things around last year, I was hopeful for Skubals inevitable inclusion on the trade block at some point but that’s not gonna line up and work out now.
They gave up a very promising starter in Griffin Herring. McMahon doesn’t even hit as well as Cabrera. Outside Denver he’s a .215 hitter with little power. So he’s not going to have much impact this year and no place on this squad for next year. It’s just lost young talent for nothing. Caleb Durbin should be at 3B. He’s a ROY candidate…for the Brewers who’ve been red hot since they added him. And we should still have Michael King, Randy Vasquez and Nestor Cortes in the rotation. They’re all young too. That’s a squad that has a shot at a ring. But they wear other uniforms because Cashman traded them away.Instead we have the disappointing Devin Williams and Trent Grisham who’s been good but blocks the way for Spencer Jones. All in all,Cashman is guilty of poorly managing young talent and deal making. The team would be far better off if he simply sat on the young talent they have, develop them and let them contribute when they were ready.
They gave away a very promising starter for a 3B who doesn’t even hit as well as Oswaldo Cabrera. So he’s obviously not going to be a difference maker this year and there will be little use for him next year. The 3B they actually need is playing for the Brewers who’ve been the hottest team in MLB since they brought him up and are now in 1st place. That 3B is Caleb Durbin. In fact the guys they need were Yankees before Cashman foolishly traded them away. Durbin, Michael King, Randy Vasquez and Nestor Cortes. If they still had those guys the rotation would be fine, 3B would be covered by a ROY candidate and they’d just need to find some relievers. That would be an ez task. Instead Cashman is repeating the mistakes that put them in this bind. Until he stops trading away the guys they need they’re not going to win a ring.
The Devin Williams trade is just one more bad trade that Cash has done….he’s put a bad team together that doesn’t use speed or runs the bases well…can’t field very well…has questionable on field Baseball knowledge…waits for the HR to score…and I haven’t as yet talked about their terribly constructed bullpen full of other teams castoffs….and yet Boone defends them all….Cash and/or Boone needs to go and Hal needs a baseball guy in-between him and the new manager/GM to help right this mess.
Yankees will finish 3rd in the ALE if they’re lucky, I’d be furious if I had an extra 21st chromosome
