Yankees Acquire Ryan McMahon

By Darragh McDonald | July 25, 2025 at 11:59pm CDT

The Yankees have a new third baseman. New York announced the acquisition of Ryan McMahon from the Rockies for pitching prospects Griffin Herring and Josh Grosz. The Yanks already had an opening on the 40-man roster, so no additional move was necessary.

The Yankees are taking on the remainder of McMahon’s contract. He is making a $12MM salary this year, leaving a bit more than $4MM to be paid out, then will make $16MM in each of the next two seasons.

McMahon, 30, will join a new franchise for the first time in his career. He was drafted by the Rockies in the second round of the 2013 draft. He climbed up to the majors and eventually established himself as a regular in Colorado, playing quality defense at multiple infield positions.

It’s hard to say what the Yankees will be getting from McMahon offensively. He has generally been good for 20-25 home runs a year, though while playing his home games in the hitters’ haven of Coors Field and with some high strikeout totals. Despite some good surface-level stats, he’s generally been ranked as a subpar hitter by metrics that adjust for the Coors effect. He has a career batting line of .240/.323/.420 but a wRC+ of 89. In other words, that metric considers him 11% worse than league average at the plate.

For his career, McMahon has hit .263/.343/.476 at home and .216/.302/.362 on the road, obviously a huge difference. At first glance, that might suggest he can only hit in Denver and will fall to pieces in a new jersey. The truth is likely more nuanced than that. Pitches move differently at elevation than they do at sea level due to the differences in resistance or drag. Most notably, breaking balls move less in Denver than in other parks, so it’s tough for Colorado hitters to constantly adjust as they go on the road and back.

Over the years, many players have had big home-road splits as Rockies but then evened out after leaving Denver. One such player is DJ LeMahieu, who also moved from the Rockies to the Yankees. During his time with Colorado, LeMahieu hit .329/.386/.447 at Coors but just .267/.314/.367 on the road. When he left Denver for the Bronx, the move wasn’t difficult for him at all. He slashed .336/.386/.536 over his first two seasons with the Yankees.

In terms of the glovework, there’s little question that McMahon is strong there. He has played lots of first base and second base in his career but has settled in as Colorado’s third baseman. The Yanks will surely keep him at the hot corner. They recently moved Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third to second, both due to his personal comfort level and some shoulder soreness he was experiencing. That led to LeMahieu getting bumped off the roster and released.

They’ve been connected to various third basemen for weeks, including McMahon, Eugenio Suárez and others. In the meantime, they’ve been covering the position with Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas. Neither of those two have been hitting well this year. Vivas has a .164/.270/.255 line this year while Peraza is at .147/.208/.237.

For McMahon’s career, he has 5,550 innings at third. He’s been credited with 64 Defensive Runs Saved and 44 Outs Above Average. Dating back to the start of 2021, when he first got regular run at third, he has 54 DRS and 42 OAA. In both cases, he trails only Ke’Bryan Hayes among big league third basemen for that span.

The Yankees can bank on sure-handed defense at third. The Yankees love ground-ball pitchers, on account of their hitter-friendly park, so McMahon should be a notable upgrade in turning those grounders into outs. The offense is a bit more of a question mark, as outlined above, but it will still likely be an upgrade over the in-house options.

Due to his contract, McMahon should be able to cover the hot corner for not just this year but two more. The Rockies signed him to an extension just ahead of the 2022 season. As mentioned, that deal pays McMahon $12MM this year followed by $16MM in each of the next two years. The Yankees will be paying him at a higher rate than that. They are a third-time competitive balance tax payor and above the highest CBT tier. That means they pay a 110% tax on any new spending.

A player’s CBT hit is recalculated at the time of a trade to account for what is left on the contract. McMahon is still owed about $36.2MM over two seasons and the roughly 35% of this year’s schedule that remains. That works out to a CBT hit of about $15.4MM. Prorate that over the rest of the year and McMahon adds about $5.4MM to the 2025 CBT. 110% of that is a bit over $5.9MM in taxes. That means the Yanks are paying more than $11MM total to have McMahon for the stretch run. Taxes will likely be a factor with his 2026 and 2027 seasons as well.

In addition to the financial cost, the Yanks are also subtracting a couple of pitchers from their system. Herring, 22, was a sixth-round pick in last year’s draft. He has made 16 starts this year between Single-A and High-A, eight at each level. He has a combined 1.71 earned run average, 28.5% strikeout rate, 10.1% walk rate and 50% ground ball rate. Baseball America gives him a 45 grade on the 20-80 scale and had him listed as the #17 prospect in the Yankee system.

Grosz, 22, was an 11th-round pick in 2023. He has since pitched 208 2/3 innings in the minors with a 3.97 ERA, 25.7% strikeout rate and 10% walk rate. BA doesn’t list him as one of the top 30 prospects in the Yankee system.

For the Rockies, it’s a notable shift for them. They haven’t had a winning record since 2018 but haven’t always capitalized on their losing seasons by trading players at the deadline. Trevor Story wasn’t traded and ended up departing for just qualifying offer compensation. Jon Gray didn’t even get a QO, so he departed for nothing. Players like Daniel Bard and C.J. Cron got ill-advised extensions instead of being traded.

However, the team seems to be accepting that they are in a rough spot and need change. Their struggles have reached a new nadir this year. Their 26-76 record is easily the worst in baseball. In fact, they are on pace to challenge the modern-day loss record, which the White Sox set just last year.

The scope of the franchise’s struggles has opened up more willingness to try new things. Though the club has often been considered loyal to a fault, they fired manager Bud Black in May. McMahon was reportedly a favorite of owner Dick Monfort, but that’s no longer enough to keep him off the trading block. The club is also reportedly open to offers on controllable pitchers like Victor Vodnik and Seth Halvorsen.

Parting with McMahon allows them to add some young pitching prospects, which is an ongoing concern for them. They regularly struggle to put competent pitching staffs together and even some of their modest success stories are running out of steam. Germán Márquez, Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and Austin Gomber have all had some success for the Rockies but they’re all now in their 30s and nearing free agency. Márquez and Gomber hit the open market in a few months. Senzatela and Freeland have options in their contracts but are only guaranteed through 2026.

The Rockies will ideally develop younger pitchers over time, but even their most notable prospect struggled this year, as Chase Dollander had a 6.68 ERA in 15 starts before being sent back down to the minors. Improving their long-term pitching outlook will be an ongoing project and they’ve added a couple more arms today.

The move could also have impacts on the broader market. The Yankees were one of several clubs connected to Suárez, so there is one less suitor for him now. However, he has reportedly drawn interest from a dozen different teams, so the Snakes should still be able to do well there. Even after adding McMahon, the Yankees should still be on the lookout for pitching. The Rockies, meanwhile, could make a few more trades before next week’s deadline. In addition to the aforementioned pitchers, position players like Thairo Estrada and Mickey Moniak could be available.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com first reported the Yankees had an agreement to acquire McMahon for two prospects. ESPN’s Jorge Castillo reported Herring’s inclusion. Bob Nightengale of USA Today was first with Grosz heading to Colorado. Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported that the Yanks were assuming McMahon’s entire salary.

Career close to league average bat with 20+ homer pop, Gold Glove defense at third.

Better than anything they had, by a lot, on either side of the ball.

He is a lefty, so may offset some of those numbers. Reminds me of when Yankees traded for Scott Brouis he had hit 201 with the A’s. So maybe a change of scenery

.664 OPS road hitting with plus defense would be a perfectly acceptable #9 hitter, or a slightly weak #8 hitter. And he should be closer to .680-.690 OPS in Yankee Stadium once he gets accustomed to it.

He also won’t have the physical toll of playing half of his games at altitude.

Why can’t people figure out that the ridiculously short porch in rightfield for Yankee Stadium does NOT benefit lefties? It totally screws them up because they start swinging for the porch every pitch. You watch, his already lousy .217 average will soon be .175 after being a Yankee for two months.

One year he hit above average away and another average. Didn’t go back too far to find it. So we know it’s possible. Which means playing full time away from coors it’s possible to be average or above and with that defense that’s all he needs to be.

Yankee Stadium is known for a short right-field porch, which modestly helps left-handed hitters—but overall, its HR effect is closer to league average than generally believed.. Overall Yankee Stadium is middle of the pack for hitting favorability..

We’re talking about Aaron Boone. McMahon could wind up being the leadoff hitter or even the clean up hitter for all we know. Bozo the Clown Boone just throws nine names into his hat, picks them out and makes his lineup out like that, I’m convinced of it.

It’s not like he’s going to a big ballpark. Yankee Stadium is pretty hitter friendly in its own right. This isn’t the same as a move to San Francisco with the marine air or Seattle would be. I think his hitting will be the same or maybe even better like LeMahieu when he first came from Colorado.

OPS+ is park adjusted, so the fact that he plays at Coors is already accounted for in that number. The Rockies as a team have never had an OPS+ over 100, ever in their history, because of the extreme park effect.

You’ll really like Mac. Spectacular and smooth fielder, and can hit the ball a mile lefty. Will feast on that porch.

Ryan McMahon has NEVER even been league average in any season during his career as he’s had a sub 100 ops+ every year he’s been in the majors.

He’ll probably improve the Yankees defense as he’s been pretty solid throughout his career but to expect McMahon help the Yankees offensively is not something one should expect.

He just needs to be slightly below league average. They have plenty of other hitters.

you’d think playing at coors would mean he doesnt lead the league in strikeouts since you’d want to put the ball in play more but thats just me. yes OPS+ is park adjusted but his numbers are still not good.

he bats .189/.265/.324 on the road. if he didnt play at Coors at all his OPS+ would be lower despite the park adjustments

          Joe,
Basic stats, advanced stats, splits, the whole picture, show Ryan McMahon is a below average hitter. We clearly take into account the ballpark and its effects on a hitter when considering home vs away splits but if you wanna be a contrarian to make yourself feel better then knock yourself out lol. OPS+ is ballpark adjusted and still doesnt reflect well for him. So he leads the league in strikeouts because he cant adjust to a different break and therefor hes just fine of a hitter? But dont worry about that just ignore every good hitter whos ever played at Coors had inflated numbers at Coors
          THIS!!!

Begamin I’m not saying he’s suddenly going to be an elite batter. I’m speaking to the overall Coors home/away splits that get discussed with every Rockies player. And OPS+ doesn’t take into account all the factors involved with the unique situation with Coors. As I mentioned about the article from Eno Sarris, he was showing the large difference between the beginning of a road trip and end of a road trip for Rockies players. The end of the road trip is when the players are getting more comfortable with the movement of the ball away from Coors. OPS+ is useless with such things.

Sure lol Im not buying that its so much more difficult for hitters who play for the Rockies to play on the road than it is easier for them to play at home with the thin air. Road teams dont seem to have a hard time adjusting to the Colorado air

How many pitches would a regular see in a 6 game home stand? 4 to 5 PAs a game x 4 or 5 pitches per PA? Somewhere in the realm of 100-120 pitches? You do that at Coors and then the next day you are hitting at Oracle in a night game? That’s got to be tough. And that’s not at all baked into park factor.

Begamin, I wouldn’t underestimate what Joe Says… says. Beyond the ball flying and lots of OF grass to touch, there are very real other effects of playing at elevation half the time that players on the Rockies contend with. You say advanced stats show he is a poor hitter but xwOBA which is a nice context neutral stat that measures quality of contact at the bat shows him to be a very good hitter in terms of plate approach and quality of contact. It has its blind spots for sure but the typical ones aren’t overly apparent when you look at his profile. I think there’s more reason to be optimistic that getting out of that environment is going to lead to improved offensive numbers. And even if not, his on base floor is pretty high because he draws plenty of walks and he hits his fair share of homers which is more than enough when considering how much he helps that atrocious defense. Though as a Toronto fan maybe I don’t have a good sense of that. Boone said they were a good defensive team outside of Toronto so maybe they’re better than what I just watched the past two series between the Yanks and Jays.

You still have to adjust both ways. If you adjusted so much because its such a big deal to the increaded pitch movement then you have to adjust back that much when you take it away. Not gonna gigabrain think they perform poorly on the road when the obvious answer is that its simply easier to hit at Coors. Less pitch movement is just another bonus for hitting at Coors

Looking at these early deals I can feel the panic in Hoyer from my house. It’s going to jolt him into doing something bad I know it. The Tigers have lost some games and I don’t see Scott Harris panicking. Instead of keeping it simple he’ll go for the big deal because that’s who he is but he’s not the guy Ricketts should be trusting right now. Does anybody think Cashman will do the same? Just curious.

I have to believe Ricketts already knows if Jed-eye is staying or going. If Jed is going then he may not have full control over the deals.

Lugo, Bender and Santana would be nice but the price for Lugo will probably be too high.

Leads the NL in strikeouts and is hitting .217, tack on two years at 16M per. He has hit a little bit in July

Grosz is a good prospect, could add some to his fastball, still young and developing, same pitch mix as DeGrom.

Herring looks like a nice prospect too. Rockies save a load of dough and get two good arms. Good trade for the Rockies.

I expect Cashman will bring in a workhorse rental like Merrill Kelly and a strong reliever this deadline. He has an abundance of pitching prospects and we all know he loves to trade them. They are too good of a team not to make the playoffs and they have the talent to get hot during them. I like their chances if they can avoid injuries to Fried and Rodon. Which I know is asking a lot of Jobu.

The yanks have a top tier offense and can easily absorb 1 peraza type in the starting 9

I expected Colorado to pick up a big part of his contract so he will be easier to trade when Lombard is ready. Perhaps Cashman is saving them for a pitchers or maybe he is thinking McMahon can take over for Goldy. I like the trade seems fair for all except the poor pitching prospects getting shipped to Colorado.

Aloha bradduh, notice the Yankees are getting so many years of control as well for Ryan, not giving up a ton because NY is taking on Ryan’s contract. Good for Colorado. I sure hope my Cubs FO doesn’t give arizona Owen Caissie or Wiggins for a rental in Suarez. The team needs pitching more than hitting. BTW I read an article that “proposed” Cease coming to Wrigley and Amaya our young catcher going back, lol! I like your Padres but not to give him up for a rental. And besides, hopefully SD gets on a roll, they’ll need Cease. Mahalo

kg… Aloha… Their need for starting pitching is dire. I know some are afraid of giving up guys like Cassie, Ballesteros, Alcantara, Wiggins.. others.. But they are most definitely in ‘win now’ mode and as the Tucker trade proved, Hoyer’s not afraid to deal if he thinks he’s getting a difference maker (s) in return. I believe they need 2 starters, a BP arm and a bench bat. Assad and Taillon are ok, but they’re not putting them over the top. And there’s other concerns. Boyd is already past the most innings he’s pitched since 2019 and Horton is in unknown territory as well. They will have to pace them if they want them to last til October… I’m not convinced he goes after Suarez. I wonder if he’ll try to pry Will Castro from the Twins. Solid bat and plays all over… Anyway, we’ll see. Gonna be interesting for sure!

Aloha rondon, agreed. Discernment is important because trading for various players doesn’t guarantee a championship too. Then if one trades away the best talent and tucker doesn’t come back, now Caissie, Alcantara, Wiggins are gone. If the FO thinks Lugo, Kelly can do the job in the rotation as rentals that shouldn’t cost the top prospects. And Jed better not trade away the best for rentals. But if the nationals were willing to trade Gore, I’d understand a top prospect there. Remember the Braves in 2021 I believe, they traded for a lot of rentals and made it work without giving up their farm. Anyhow, just because the “consensus” in the media is that the Cubs must go for it, doesn’t mean the organization has to be crazy in acquiring players for this 1 shot. And as much as I like tucker, I’m not worried if he leaves. Meaning his production isn’t so overwhelming that the team couldn’t contend next year, especially if the pitching is worked out. Take care now. Mahalo

Aloha Chitown, well happ has a NTC and is very established in Chicago. He can turn down any trade. I think if tucker hasn’t been extended by now, he’s going into free agency. I definitely would not trade Caissie and if possible Alcantara too, as he’s a better defender. Tucker is good but his production is not massive like Soto’s was in his walk off year with the Yankees, he had a WAR of 7.9. For what the Cubs gave up for Tuck, he’s not coming close to that production, right now he’s at 4.2. His numbers are actually down some both defense and offense. A theory of mind is that Tucker went from a nice environmentally controlled stadium to the natural outside elements in Wrigley. His defense is overall -2 OAA and his production is better on the road than at Wrigley. He’s profiling as a future dh. Again very good but not $400-500mil good. He probably wants to go to an easier park for hitting and defense. Wrigley is at the bottom. I think the FO has to plan on him leaving. The offense will be okay. They need to work on pitching but not overpay for arms in the short run. Take care. Mahalo

@MeowMeow Believe it has to do with his batted ball profile. With the short porch in RF Yankee Stadium plays way up for HR by lefty pull hitters but neutral for righties, and McMahon’s spray chart shows half his homers have been hit to the opposite field or straightaway center, only a couple down the right field line.

Ah, that makes sense. I forget that LF in Yankee Stadium isn’t as close in, especially for a lefty hitting the opposite way.

They’ll have him for 2 seasons after this one still, so here’s hoping they aren’t able to meaningfully change his swing to generate more pull-side power.

When calculating expected home runs I think for the most part they just take the distance the ball was hit and overlay it on the stadium. I don’t think they actually have to play there in order for it to be calculated.

Seattle would’ve already acquired Suarez in the naylor deal if they were still in on him so I’m assuming they balked at his price and are less interested right now

Cubs and tigers should be the frontrunners right now with reds as a surprise candidate

@sad- I disagree. We were never acquiring both in the same deal. Geno has the most value of any position player, so:

          1) AZ likely wouldn’t want to package him with another player unless it leads to an elite prospect return.

          2) They’re going to milk the bidding until someone overpays or they’ll wait until deadline day. No reason to rush moving him. Naylor is easier to move.

          3) Jude, Kramer, and Drayer say we’re still “aggressively pursuing” him and remain one of his top suitors.

I’m thinking that Depoto and Hazen have already have a agreement that Seattle will have last say if the D’Backs have a deal in place from another team it all depends how bad do the Mariners want Suarez that they could go higher . Remember the D’Backs and Seattle have made many trades together.

I don’t really understand this thought process. The Dbacks absolutely have no rush on moving Geno. Why would acquiring one player take them out on the other? FWIW, all the local beat writers say we’re still “aggressively pursuing” him and he remains the top focus.

@bucsfan- No, not really given all the local reporting. Geno is our “top target.” Can’t imagine all 3 of our best beat writers are being fooled at once. That’s never really happened. Unless they’re purposefully providing misdirection.

I agree with that, I just don’t think trading for Naylor eliminates us from the Geno running. There’s no rush for the Dbacks to move Geno given he has 12 suitors, but they were probably motivated to move Naylor for an acceptable package since he’s an expiring guy with limited suitors who they wouldn’t keep and QO. At least with Geno, they can slap him with a QO if nobody meets their price.

He is a needle mover cause he plays GG defense. And he has been hitting better since July. You don’t need him to an all-star. At worst, he is the same player which is still valuable because of his defense. All for mid-pitching prospects.

At least the send away wasn’t major. Under the circumstances, decent upside for a modest sendoff. In this market, not terrible.

I’m just more commenting on the fact that they would have to complete 2 separate deals from the same 2 teams within one week. It just seems unlikely that they would try and work out another deal when they could have just added onto the Naylor trade and got both Suarez AND Naylor.

So I’m thinking it’s the Cubs, Mets, Brewers or Reds. Highest bidder wins.

Two months of Suarez would’ve cost more than 26 months of McMahon? I mean, maybe. Especially since he has $32M remaining. But normally, long-term assets cost less than rentals.

You are nuts if you think this was an overpay. Herring was another mid round(6th) college guy the Yankees drafted and developed. He only throws in the low 90s. He basically only has one MLB level pitch which is a sweeper, and his best hope for making the majors and sticking there is as a reliever.

Yankees got a GG level 3B to shore up a glaring need, with left handed pop that should play well at Yankee Stadium, with an affordable contract for the next 2 1/2 seasons, and only cost them 2 prospects that aren’t any higher than Doubke A ball. If you think this was a bad trade you don’t know baseball.

I despise Cashman but it is a solid trade. No big prospects are going and McMahon is above average defensively. In that lineup and park he may get a boost offensively. He could be a poor man’s Scott Brosius.

The only other two 3B that look to be attainable are Garcia and Suarez and they are going to come with a high cost.

The overarching issue, imho, is that McMahon is exactly the type of hitter Cashman always goes for: high K, low BA, high potential for HR. Cashman is stuck on the TTO guys. As Derek from Pinstripe Territory said, Cashman tries to acquire stats instead of baseball players.

The problem I have with this is Cashman has had ample time and opportunity with a $300MM payroll to get a 3Bman better than what we are again settling for, halfway through the season.

Yes, McMahon is supposed to be much better defensively, but don’t forget, he also has led the NL in errors at 3B a couple times. Volpe won’t help that.

Our biggest issue is that the Yankees are far too late to the party, yet again, and now doing whatever they can just to squeak into the WC.

We desperately need changes at manager and GM for the organization to move forward.

Yeah, I mean, it’s a pick of which weaknesses you want in a limited player pool. If McMahon brings a GG defense, I’m good with this out of the candidates. I worry about his errors in the past though with McMahon having to use his range to pick up Volpe’s slack.

I really thought Castro was the best overall choice, although he may not be available, or they may have wanted too high a price.

Mostly, I just can’t tolerate Boone or Cashman anymore. With our luck, Boone will have McMahon slated for 2B, put Jazz back at 3B, and tell us they’re elite.

#15 for overall offense per Statcast park factors, compared to #1 for Coors. Yankee Stadium plays up for lefty pull hitters who can take advantage of the short porch in right, but only a couple of McMahon’s homers this season have been down the RF line, with half to the opposite field or CF.

      Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox):

The short left field fence (the “Green Monster”) makes it easier for left-handed hitters to hit home runs.
      Chase Field (Arizona Diamondbacks):

It’s not like the Yankee’s 30plus year competitive window is closing. No need to mortgage the future for a bat when this roster needs bullpen and rotation help to really push for a WS.

Yankees won’t miss either one of those prospects. The one kid has had a good year in A+, but as a former college arm he should. He is a back of the rotation piece at best. The other guy is a reliever long term. NYY got a player certainly with warts, but he’s a legit great defender at 3B and despite the strikeouts, he’ll get to 22-25 homers every year. Heck, maybe in a better lineup he’ll have an uptick.

To be fair, he hit those home runs playing half of his games at Coors. Due to his batted ball profile it seems kind of unlikely he will even be able to take full advantage of the short porch in right either. I’m guessing around 15 homers per year for NY.

Herring is a bullpen guy. Fastball sits at only 90mph. Didn’t add velocity like most Yankees farm guys. His only good pitch is a sweeper and hitters above A ball will lay off it. Sweepers are death in low level minors. The other guy is a lottery ticket. Fastball sits around 93mph. Best pitch is a gyro slider. Again, looks more like a reliever. More than likely never moves beyond AAA.

Both are A ball guys so they are really both lottery tickets rather than anything you can plan on.

As a disappointed Os fan with not much to root for other than the Yankees not doing well, I love this deal. A guy who has been hitting .240 with about 180 Ks the last 3 years while playing for Colorado and its .217 this year at an age where the decline often begins and they owe 16M next year and the year after where if I read it right they will be taxed 110% if they dont get under the threshold, yes please, I will take that all day for the other team.

I watched a lot of the TOR NYY series and the Yankees fielding was atrocious so I can see the appeal on that level. But another cant hit power only major swing and miss guy is the last thing their lineup needs. The thing about those kind of lineups where close to everyone is a .250 or worse hitter but can hit 20 or more home runs is it can work in the regular season and get you wins and a playoff spot but then those guys are playing the best teams in the league’s 1s and 2s and that is when the 180K low average guy is going to be overmatched a lot.

Its not just a Yankees thing. I remember watching Os playoff games in the mid 2010s and the elite pitching gets those guys out. Most of the 20 plus HRs probably came at the hands of lesser SPs. Volpe and Wells probably not having 2 HR games against Skubal Crochet and Logan Gilbert. Probably more like 2 Ks.

On the tax…It’s only money and not mine! I would rather pay money than prospects. Low risk low reward deal for sure, if you watched the Toronto series then you know what trouble the Yankees are having catching and throwing the baseball. I suppose I see it as if you spend 16M or 30M after tax for a 3B or any of the 9 guys you put in a lineup, then you may feel you addressed something and that is one less guy you add. Then you have to play him or just hurt the team eating the money as they did with Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks, sometimes facing the player while paying them. I hear ya on money not prospects.

As far as scoring runs, back to what I was saying, its going to come down to who you score them against and last two series against Toronto it did not look promising.

Also, I think it will come down to do teams know how to manage and control Judge. Maybe every AB forward should be an intentional walk and I dont think that would be good for the Yankees. It is alarming how many pitchers are willing to throw pitches with very little movement over the plate close to his waistline. He almost never does not crush those. Bassitt threw one of those and Judge watched. Then he threw the exact same pitch. HR. If teams can just throw him pitches he struggles with a little more or walk him, the scoring drops off a bit, especially against good teams and good pitching.

Exactly what the Yank$ needed badly and it came at the cost of a #17 45 grade high A pitcher plus a scratch off? That’s a really lame return. Naylor didn’t bring back much either.

Thought it would be a sellers’ market, turns out its all for the buyers.

As a Giant’s fan watching McMahon for years with the Rockies I’m happy he gets to go play with a contender even if it’s with the Yankees. He’s a real solid pickup. Really good defender and always been a solid bat. He’s also a good clubhouse presence. Always seemed like a true pro. He’s going to help the Yankees.

I have enjoyed watching Mac play defense for many years now. I always wanted him to be better on offense and at times he was. But he is notoriously streaky at the plate. He will have a month where he strikes out almost every time at the plate and then follow that up with a month of looking like an All Star. But throughout all of the struggles, he is one of the best defenders in the game. Yankee fans will love watching him bare hand bunts or little squibbers and throw out the runner by a step on plays that would be a single to most others.

Between Arenado and McMahon, we Rockies fans have been spoiled with defense at third for a while now. In between the two we had a short run of Elehuris Montero who might as well not even had a glove. I am not expecting immediate Gold Glove defense from the next third baseman, but I really hope we get a competent one.

McMahon is a terrible hitter outside Denver. His good defense and occasional power made him a bad addiction for the Rockies. You’ll benefit from making room for a better young player. By next July the Yankees will be looking to unload him. Meanwhile, you just picked up a seriously promising young starter in Griffen Herring. The way he’s pitching it looks like he’ll move up quickly. I won’t be surprised if he’s ready for a Sept call up by next year and a rotation slot for ’27.

I have watched 150+ Rockies games each year since 2013. Please do not tell me what Rockies players are like by reading some stats. You cannot tell how good a player is by reading some numbers on a website. At the very least you cannot tell better than someone that has watched him play almost every game of his career. His defense is not “good,: it is spectacular. As far as Herring goes, until he plays in the majors, he is just a name on a page. There have so many “can’t miss” guys that dominated A ball that did nothing in the bigs. He may be great, but I take the wait and see approach rather than assuming he will beat the odds.

Wonder if that means Seattle outbid them for Geno? Would be nice to see ownership spend the money. Means they are realizing that the post season can pay more than just a close run to them. Those playoff games can be worth a lot.

McMahon is headed to a better organization while he is on a resurgent offensive hot streak. DJ was shocked at the difference in how the NY organization helped prepare players offensively, and McMahon will benefit from the same. Ryan was GG caliber at 3B, and even filled 2B at that level a couple of years ago.

Once he detoxes from the Coors altitude hangover effect, expect a much better offensive player, plus continued GG-caliber defense.

    Win win.

A for Yankees. I don’t know what he can do for sure outside of coors but I think he can be an above average hitter and with that defense that’s well worth 16m. Defense gives him a great floor. And I wouldn’t cry over those 2 pitchers. Not near MLB ready. Reliever risk even likely. Easily replaced.

C for Colorado. Just a fair meh return. Nothing exciting but as expected. 2 more arms for system. Did he want to be traded? Didn’t owner like him? Fans liked him? I would have just kept him if this was the return.

He’s a lefty pull hitter with pop and plays good D. Good for YS. There aren’t a lot of teams which want him for $32M owed for two more seasons with a 100 OPS+ ceiling. He’s not moving the needle going forward for Colorado so why not spend that money on lottery tickets.

In six games at Coors Field coming out of the All-Star break, McMahon blistered the Twins and Cardinals by going 6-for-20 with three home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, four walks and six strikeouts while batting fourth and fifth in the order.

That answers the previous question of where McMahon batted in the order recently.

I’m sure they asked for Jones in exchange for Suárez, and we passed. That is the right choice. Even if we include spencer Jones in another deal, he is too valuable to give up for a 35-year-old rental.

You figure it would take more than 2 lottery ticket prospects to get a guy who is still controllable for the next 2 years. I’m not saying he is worth Lombard, Dominguez, or Rice, but maybe 3 prospects or at least 2 with a guy in the top 10.

Outside Denver he hit .215 w no power. Orlando Cabrera is a better hitter. So McMahon is not winning us a ring and there’s no place for him on this club next year. For that Cashman gave away a seriously promising young starter in Griffen Herring. One of the top NL ROY candidates should be at 3B – Caleb Durbin. But Cashman threw him and Nestor away for Devin Williams. There’s a litany of bad trades Cashman has made over the years that, if undone, would’ve resulted in a ring or two since ’09. But his “win now” approach never goes quite far enough to bring in the veterans they need yet costs them the young talent that would build a championship core. He’s niether fish nor fowl. And that’s why they always come up a day late and a dollar short of a championship club.

I really like this move for the Yankees, let’s us deal with 3b defense, lets Jazz play 2nd everyday without worry at least for a bit, and this guy’s offense can’t be as bad as Peraza and Vivas Estrada etc. yes I’m including Estrada because he’s been an option here and there far too many times while he was a Yankee.

They didn’t give up much for him either and now their free to hone in on a deal for pitching needs. I honestly don’t see Jones panning out in the Majors so I’m fine with them getting what they can for him, just not sure I’d be okay with a trade like Jones and one of Lagrange, schlittler,Hess, Hampton for what would likely be a rental.

The real tragedy is the Tigers turning things around last year, I was hopeful for Skubals inevitable inclusion on the trade block at some point but that’s not gonna line up and work out now.

They gave up a very promising starter in Griffin Herring. McMahon doesn’t even hit as well as Cabrera. Outside Denver he’s a .215 hitter with little power. So he’s not going to have much impact this year and no place on this squad for next year. It’s just lost young talent for nothing. Caleb Durbin should be at 3B. He’s a ROY candidate…for the Brewers who’ve been red hot since they added him. And we should still have Michael King, Randy Vasquez and Nestor Cortes in the rotation. They’re all young too. That’s a squad that has a shot at a ring. But they wear other uniforms because Cashman traded them away.Instead we have the disappointing Devin Williams and Trent Grisham who’s been good but blocks the way for Spencer Jones. All in all,Cashman is guilty of poorly managing young talent and deal making. The team would be far better off if he simply sat on the young talent they have, develop them and let them contribute when they were ready.

They gave away a very promising starter for a 3B who doesn’t even hit as well as Oswaldo Cabrera. So he’s obviously not going to be a difference maker this year and there will be little use for him next year. The 3B they actually need is playing for the Brewers who’ve been the hottest team in MLB since they brought him up and are now in 1st place. That 3B is Caleb Durbin. In fact the guys they need were Yankees before Cashman foolishly traded them away. Durbin, Michael King, Randy Vasquez and Nestor Cortes. If they still had those guys the rotation would be fine, 3B would be covered by a ROY candidate and they’d just need to find some relievers. That would be an ez task. Instead Cashman is repeating the mistakes that put them in this bind. Until he stops trading away the guys they need they’re not going to win a ring.

The Devin Williams trade is just one more bad trade that Cash has done….he’s put a bad team together that doesn’t use speed or runs the bases well…can’t field very well…has questionable on field Baseball knowledge…waits for the HR to score…and I haven’t as yet talked about their terribly constructed bullpen full of other teams castoffs….and yet Boone defends them all….Cash and/or Boone needs to go and Hal needs a baseball guy in-between him and the new manager/GM to help right this mess.
