Here are three things we’ll be keeping eye on around the baseball world throughout the day:
1. Arrighetti to return:
The Astros have been without Spencer Arrighetti since April due to a thumb fracture, but the right-hander is finally ready to return to action. He’s listed as the club’s probable starter for today’s game against the Marlins, which will pit him against right-hander Janson Junk (3.86 ERA in 13 appearances). Arrighetti made just two starts before getting shelved earlier this year but posted a 4.53 ERA and 4.18 FIP in 145 innings of work during his rookie campaign last year. The 25-year-old’s return should help offer some certainty to a rotation that has largely lacked it this season outside of Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown. Corresponding moves will be necessary to clear both 40-man and active roster space for Arrighetti.
2. Cavalli returns to the majors:
Former Nationals top prospect Cade Cavalli made his MLB debut back in 2022. He surrendered seven runs on six hits, two walks, and three hit batters over 4 1/3 innings of work while striking out six opponents, and he hasn’t pitched in the majors since. That’s not because of his poor performance in his debut, but because he missed the entire 2023 and ’24 seasons while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Cavalli has now made 15 starts at Triple-A but has struggled badly in his last six starts, leaving him with a 6.01 ERA despite solid peripheral numbers. Despite those recent struggles, he’ll now get the opportunity to pitch in the majors for the first time in three years. He’ll take the mound in front of the home crowd in D.C. opposite Athletics lefty Jeffrey Springs, who has a 4.00 ERA in 23 appearances this year.
3. Red Sox streaking ahead of May’s team debut:
The Red Sox have been surging in recent days, with wins in each of their last seven games. They’ll now look to keep the good times rolling as deadline addition Dustin May makes his Red Sox debut at Fenway Park this evening in a game against the Royals scheduled for 7:10pm local time. May’s 104 innings of work this year for the Dodgers are already a career high, but he’s posted a middling 4.85 ERA with a 4.72 FIP. He’ll look to put up stronger numbers in Boston, starting tonight against Michael Wacha (3.38 ERA in 22 starts). If May can help lead the Red Sox to a win, the club’s eight-game win streak would be their second streak of that length after they won ten straight earlier this year. Only the Brewers have two win streaks of eight games or longer this season.
Definitely should be interesting to see how May does against old friend Wacha.
Then a very interesting weekend series in SD with old friend Pivetta pitching Friday and Xander heating up, who was with the Sox just 3 years ago but didn’t play with nearly anyone on the current team.
Fever,
Your Red Sox are on fire, really giving it to the Blue Jays!
I don’t think you guys will have to worry about the Yankees catching you. They’re teetering on not even being in the playoffs hunt.
Acoss – The beauty of baseball is on a dime teams can swing from very good to very bad, and vice versa. So I’m not taking anything for granted. I haven’t looked at the Yankees schedule yet, but I’m not ruling out the Yankees and neither are the sportsbooks (I just looked at WS odds this morning LOL).
The fallacy of sportsbooks is they don’t set lines solely based on how they expect results to be. Rather, they set them based more on how they anticipate betting will go. They’re happy when they get balanced action both ways and take the vig.
dewey – I admit I’m far from a sports betting expert, but if the current odds are based on wagers being made (like in horse racing) then wouldn’t a lot of money being placed on a team like the Dodgers means lots of people have reason to believe they will win? The big money bets won’t be made based on team name recognition.
I agree the sportsbooks want balanced action, so they’ve got plenty of money to cover whether it’s a favorite or a longshot that wins.
Acoss is correct: A loss in Texas this afternoon not only means a sweep by the Rangers, it would drop the Yankees out of the wild card places. And the Bombers were in first place as recently as July 2.
Nothing is changing in New York until someone has the cojones to fire Boone.
Fever hopefully fears over a crotchet injury or some other issue were put to rest last night? I couldn’t catch the game but the stat line looked impressive
moy – Hopefully! Yes he was strong, just as I expected after all the time off. Lets hope that continues.
Fever: In spite of some doubts by some fans, I knew the Red Sox fans would be happy with Crochet. And it seems Gio is doing pretty good. White Sox East.
avenger – With Crochet it’s always been about health, nobody ever doubted his ability.
Same with Gio, it was obvious he wasn’t 100% in 2022/2023 and now that he’s had the surgery he’s back to pre-2022 form.
Fever: I’m thrilled that they’re doing well, and that they’re doing it with my second favorite team.
There you go…..Crochet every bit the stud ace!
Just needed rest of team to follow his lead.
While O’s were hyperventilating about HOF bound Coby Mayo and LAD with Dalton Rushing, RSox knew dirt cheap TOR starters (with TJS perfect amount of time in rearview mirror) rarely become available to play the amateurish lowball offer/prospect hugging game.
Eovaldi smoked the Yankees last night, It’s Eovaldi, Crochet Brown and DeGrom for the Cy Young. Crochet should have a “leg up” with him having pitched consistently all season but Eovaldi is making his case.
Seems like Skubal is frontrunner, but yes all those SPs have kept their teams in playoff hunt.
Funny how he failed to mention the guy that is, at this point, the unanimous choice for the AL CY…
miller – With all due respect, why are you omitting the guy who is currently 2nd in the league in strikeouts and innings pitched, and leads the league in ERA?
Sorry but Skubal has to be at least co-favorite right now.
Carver, I assume CY stands for cracking yokes. My PPA (puns per article) is leading the league so I assume you’re talking about me.
I’d give the leg up to Skubal right now who has a slightly higher K/9 and lower BB/9, HR/9, and FIP. One bad start could flip the script though.
(@bwmiller will mute you if you point his inconsistencies.)
Skubal is just the straight favourite. He leads in virtually every category.
Best ERA/ERA+, Best FIP (by a fair bit), best WHIP (by a fair bit) , fewest walks and most strikeouts per nine leading to an other worldly 9.53 k/bb ratio. All the other top pitchers, including Crochet have k/bb ratios somewhere in the 4’s.
Crochet has 2 more strikeouts then Skubal, but has pitched one more game. Skubal’s next game, presumably in the next few days, will see him take back the strikeout lead.
Crochet has been a revelation for the Red Sox, but Skubal has been better.
Right and Skubal, was focused on my dumb joke. I blew it!
I know, I was focused on making the dumb joke, it was all about the “leg up” joke. I forgot Skubal in my setup and now the joke has failed! Im laughing about it though, funnier now for some reason. Mostly because Carver is here to put his disgruntled two cents in.
Canuck – Two other factors, Red Sox have a far better bullpen (3rd) than Detroit (20th) and the Red Sox also have the better defense (take your pick between DRS, OAA or DEF).
miller – I can’t see his posts ;O)
The Yankees are built to streak on the hitting side of things. If they start hitting homers again they will start winning games in bunches. Never count out a team that can roll out some names to pitch, has power up and down the lineup, and plays its games in a little league stadium (to right). Would it surprise anyone if they won 8 out of ten just as easily as losing 6 out of ten?
“If they start hitting homers again they will start winning games ”
Yes.
william – I totally agree, and Gil should get better as he shakes off the rust.
I’m sure you also agree the AL is incredibly weak this year, ironically Texas is the only team that could prevent all 3 AL East teams from being in the postseason.
If the Sox, Jays and Yanks all make the postseason that would be intense.
I am a Yankees fan,but these games are unwatchable. This is a team not playing anything resembling good baseball. I am already looking to 2026. If this team makes it to the postseason it would be a quick easy sweep for whoever is playing them and will not be intense haha. Kinda hope we miss the playoffs so then maybe some big changes happen…like no more Boone or Cashman.
Beer – Yeah but you know if Judge goes back to hitting .400 he can carry the team like he did at the start of the season. He is the main reason I wouldn’t rule out the Yanks for a playoff spot.
Fever: Judge is good, but I don’t think he’s .400 good. Neither is anyone else.
avenger – On June 14th Judge was batting .390 with a 1.265 OPS
If he can do that for 68 games, he can do it for 48 games … especially against teams that are out of contention.
You think Gil spurs them by nailing his blistering fastball to the bottom of the strike zone against the other team’s Paul Bunyon?
Recent series have exposed William’s theory — the Yankees of late can score runs only via the HR. That’s been true in the stretch that’s seen them fall from first place to potentially out of the wild cards.
Chuck – I totally agree, the Yanks offense has been one-dimensional for a while now.
But their pitching is the bigger concern, they’ve given up 7+ runs in 3 of their last 5 games and 6 of their last 13 games.
The Yankees may very well start hitting home runs again but that is not their problem. Their problem is well below average defence, not just physical errors but mental errors too, and a terrible bullpen. Without pitching and defence no team makes it to the WS and wins it. I don’t even see them making the playoffs.
Saw the name Arrighetti and thought David. I am old.
Well yes, Dave was “A-rrighetti” also.
I think we’re all old lol
Here comes the calvary!!! One of several Astros starting pitchers making it back to the roster.
The Nationals Called for Cavalry and the front office staff heard “Cade Cavalli”
Don’t know if MLB TR’s has been to the new Red Sox Over The Monster revamp, but this MLB TR’s site could easily take over the traffic from RS Nation if we had an article or two a day to comment on.
Use to comment to our IT Department: “Just because we can, doesn’t mean we should”. Applicable to the new RS OTM Site. I’m sure it’s a much better platform for advertisers, not necessarily for the bloggers.
SBNation is owned by Vox Media, a major media company. MLBTR is a different niche independent business.
Maybe just maybe breslow is smarter than most fantasy teams
And they’re winning with rookies and castoffs-Amazing Sox!
Excited to see Arrighetti. Rookie numbers are inflated by a really rough start, but his last 10 starts were great: 53 IP, 67 SO, and a 2.72 ERA.
Was really looking forward to his second year when *poof*, batting practice flyball to the hand
Hopefully he can find a rhythm
