With the 2025 season nearing its conclusion, teams around the league are beginning to turn their attention towards staffing changes during the offseason. The Orioles are known to be looking for a second-in-command for president of baseball operations Mike Elias, while the Nationals are looking for the successor to Mike Rizzo and have already begun contacting possible candidates. It seems the Red Sox will also be joining the fray looking for front office talent, as Rob Bradford of Audacy Sports writes that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow will “prioritize” finding a GM to serve as his second-in-command in the Red Sox front office this year after going the first two years of his tenure in Boston without one.
It’s hardly a surprise that Breslow would be looking for a number two. Breslow conducted an audit of the Red Sox front office early in his tenure with the organization, a decision which postponed his search for a second-in-command as it would necessarily involve evaluating the work of in-house candidates. That audit concluded last year, however, and the Red Sox still entered the 2025 campaign without hiring a GM. The Red Sox did hire Taylor Smith away from the Rays for an assistant GM role last winter, but that made Smith one of several assistant GMs already in the organization. At the time of Smith’s hire, there was some speculation that perhaps Smith was being brought into the fold to take over the responsibilities of assistant GM Paul Toboni, who was at the time viewed as the top internal candidate for the GM role.
No such promotion ultimately came to pass for Toboni, however, and now that Breslow is gearing up to hire a GM this winter it’s unclear if he (or any other internal Red Sox personnel, for that matter) will be considered as candidates for the job or not. At the time, Toboni was viewed as a candidate for a handful of vacancies around the game and promoting him could have served as a way to keep him in the organization. He ultimately remained in the organization with his same title, but now could once again be a hot commodity on the market for other clubs looking to add to their front offices.
Mark Feinsand of MLB.com writes that Toboni is a candidate for the Nationals’ vacant GM job, where he would replace former head of baseball operations Mike Rizzo. While the Red Sox would be able to offer Toboni that same title, it would come with significantly more responsibility in Washington given that the GM of the Nationals is the club’s top baseball operations position. Of course, it must be noted that it’s unclear whether Toboni has been asked to interview for the position or if he’s even been contacted at this point. Even so, the fact that Toboni is even under consideration to lead an organization’s baseball operations department, in conjunction with his name coming up in various other GM searches around the league in previous years, suggests that he’s well-regarded within the industry and could once again be a candidate for various opportunities around the game.
It should be noted that Breslow’s pool of talent from which he can draw from in his GM search will naturally be smaller given that the candidate he hires will not be given the top job in baseball operations. While the Nats have been connected to names such as Cubs GM Carter Hawkins, other organizations will typically block their executives from jumping ship for a lateral move. That means anyone who is currently the #2 of an organization with a president of baseball operations, such as Hawkins, would be unlikely to even be permitted to interview for the job as Breslow’s right-hand man.
Still, there are plenty of executives around the game in assistant GM roles and other lower-level positions who Breslow would be able to consider without much issue if he would like to hire from outside the Red Sox organization. Dodgers senior VP Josh Byrnes and Diamondbacks assistant GM Amiel Sawdaye are two other names reportedly connected to the Nationals’ GM search, and while they haven’t been connected to Boston’s GM job at this point they’re both examples of executives who currently hold positions that would not necessarily preclude them from being interviewed for the role.

Anyone want a POBO? I’ve got one available to anyone dumb enough, er I mean anyone who needs one named Jed
Hopefully the Reds finally fire theirs and you can have him.
Unless Jed’s in the Epstein files, you’re stuck with him for a while.
He’s probably all over Theo’s files, but that’s not the Epstein you’re looking for.
please excuse Jed. He’s been trying his best but has been sick.
signed, Epstein’s mother.
😂😂😂
Just fire Breslow
Should have been fired when he made that disaster Sale trade.
AI, be kind. He made up for it with the Priester….aw, never mind.
Yorke for Priester was fantastic! Oh I got ya. I actually liked the other Priester trade. 2 prospects but more importantly the draft pick. Nice college arm. I lean heavy towards upside so probably go hs arm but they did well.
Crochet trade he just paid the fair price going rate but kept his elite prospects and it was a good winning move.
Dumping the fat lazy distraction dh was his best move by far.
The Sale trade is surprising now because other than that he has been great. The Sale trade was one of the worst in recent baseball history. I even gave it a F something I rarely do. Seen a few gms get off to terrible starts then do great work though.
let – The Newcomb trade for cash considerations ain’t looking too hot either.
Not to mention approaching the Twins about Ryan just 15 minutes before the trade deadline. Talk about a clown operation, is it any wonder the best they can do in trades was May and Matz?
FPG
The chain of command for the Sox confuses me. Between asst.gms, vps of baseball ops, presidents, and throw in consultants. Is Breslow the last word in talent evaluation.. what exactly is Theo’s role, Kennedy ‘s…?
cdc – That’s why I’ve been reminding everyone all year that the GM position has been vacant, almost as if it was being held for Cora.
Yes Breslow is the head of Baseball Ops, therefore he has the last word.
I haven’t heard anything about Theo’s involvement, seems like he’s strictly an investor. Breslow may bounce some things off him occasionally, considering their ties going back to the Cubs and the Red Sox when Breslow was a pitcher.
FPG
Giolito needs to be sharp tonight,he’s been giving up to many free passes. L. Gil has been decent since his return from injury. Though he is walking a ton of hitters ,19 in 29+ innings. Drive up that pitch count and get into the bullpen. Who leads off ?
Just read Braden Montgomery fractured his foot after getting hit by a pitch. He’s had a nice year, moved up several systems,to AA. A trade that looks to be beneficial to both teams.
Man, he’s unlucky. That’s the same area as the injury he sustained in college which caused him to drop a little in the draft.
College was a right ankle fracture.
That kid needs to get some protection on that foot ASAP.
Hoping he heals up quick.
cdc – I’m confident tonight. Gio is solid, the pen is solid and well rested, and the Yankees had to play last night. As long as the Sox have a lead going into the 7th or are close, they should prevail. Hopefully Rafaela is benched again, then brought in as a pinch runner or defensive replacement.
Sox are lucky they aren’t facing Rodon or Shittler this weekend.
You know my answer to your question, Duran should lead off. Bummer about Braden.
I was thinking of using the Apple TV free trial to watch tonight’s game, what do you think? Should I?
Jmo
Yeah, hopefully he heals up with a quickness. I was very pleased when the Sox drafted him. It looks like the White sy identified excellent prospects in the trade. Hated to see Teel go, but Crochet has been brilliant and he signed.
FPG
I respect the confidence, I don’t have as much . Maybe I should though, considering the Sox are 8-2 against the Empire this season. Rodon has been very good as has Schlittler(?) Was he a high rated prospect?? Gotta give the Yankees some credit, they lose there ace ( Cole) and are still right there. Imagine the Sox without Crochet,, YIKES…
Giolito,Bello, then Crochet, our big 3 let’s continue the dominance over the empire this year . I can’t remember when we (Sox) have had such a strong record against them . Do you know?
Apple,TV grab a free trial and don’t forget to cancel…
cdc – Yes the Yanks have had their share of injuries, losing Gil for most of the season was another huge setback for them.
Yes I remember it well, the Sox went 17-3 against the Yankees in 1903. This year feels kinda like the same as it did back then.
Everybody should stop being Monday morning quarterbacks and also not pick one or two moves so soon. Priester was not highly rated after not providing immediate results in Pittsburgh. Weigh those moves in 28 and see what Yorke, Priester and the kid the Sox got from the Brewers numbers look like then. Only change is if Priester helps the Brewers win it all.
7No Monday qb. 2023 Priester threw 4 seam 18 percent opponents hit it .386 average. 2025 14 percent at at .409 average. Apparently the Pirates and Red Sox don’t have even a kindergarten level analytics department. Anyways guess how much percent he’s thrown it as a Brewer.
I’ve been talking about this for a long time and haven’t seen a single person mention it which is strange because many media people use my material. Ben Cherington needed fired a long time ago. He spends a ton of $ on a analytics department that couldn’t even figure out something as simple as this. Breslow at least got something better than Yorke.
AI – I mentioned it, but I’m not a single person ….. I’m married.
cdc – Where are ya? Hopefully you didn’t give up on the Sox after tonight’s horrific loss. They should do better tomorrow against the lefty Fried, he’s been bad recently and the Sox are a much better hitting team with Romy & Ref in the lineup instead of Hamilton & Rafaela.
Giolito pitched fine, but I had a feeling this was gonna be the hardest game to win this weekend. But yeah, it’s never a good thing when you have more errors in a game than hits. LOL!
The Yankees are such a bad team when it comes to fundamentals, they play like the Sox played in the first half of the season ….. several boneheaded baserunning blunders and awful defense. How the hell did Dominguez not avoid getting hit by the ball? It was funny hearing the Sox radio guys calling Jazz dumb ….. they are right of course, he’s not a smart baserunner or fielder.
Yankees gave the Sox plenty of chances, but with runners on 2B and 3B Rafaela choked as usual. I hope Roman and Abreu come back for the postseason.
It was GREAT to hear both Pedro and Joe Castig in the both tonight!!! Joe is slipping a bit, but he’s still sharper than O’Brien. LOL
I know what you’re thinking, you’re probably worried about Texas being just 3 back and Cleveland being just 4 back …. well don’t worry, Sox will NOT miss the postseason. They’ve got 6 easy games starting next Tuesday and they end the regular season with 3 easy games ….. they will get a WC.
Everyone’s a Monday morning, quarterback here.
They see trades that didn’t work out and they jump all over management and tell them that they are stupid and idiotic or don’t know baseball and should be fired.
I can’t believe the atrocious conclusions drawn by some of these so-called fans here. I don’t even think they’re fans.., they just destroy the Red Sox and management, coaches, the field manager, ownership, and everyone associated with making decisions in Boston.
It’s a bad look, and I don’t even know why they bother. It’s like it’s fun for them to destroy the team and the decisions they make. They get joy out of it.
Gary – Don’t let tonight’s game get you down, my prediction hasn’t changed …. the Sox will make the playoffs. Their pitching is just too good not to.
The Rangers can’t continue to win, they’ve been decimated with key injuries. And Cleveland is without two of their best relievers because of the gambling scandal.
Sit back, crack open a Heineken, watch a good movie like Basic Instinct, and then prepare for another huge performance by Bello tomorrow! Go Sox!!!!
Fever I thank you for your voice of reason and talking me down from the ledge. I have my hat and my lighter and that often does not end well if you consider the evidence of past years.
I’m busy tomorrow so I’ll miss the afternoon game but Sunday night baseball on ESPN is always a favorite.
I’ll be glued to the TV and hope the Red Sox come out with a two game winning streak.
Either way it’ll be entertaining and hopefully Garrett Crochet does what he’s supposed to and shuts down the Yankees for a nice big win.
Red Sox fans in general all LOVED the Sale trade. Easy to go look. Few like Fever restrained from dancing.
Fans looked at garbage dead wrong prospect rankings on Grissom and Sale fake era. Also they assumed someone who had a bad stretch of injuries would continue to do so in 2024.
Fans being wrong is no biggie. It happens frequently. Boston front office though inexcusable.
FPG
17-3 in 1903…. Sox went 13-7 in 03.
19-2 in 1912. 14-4 in 1973 13-6 in 2013
Just looked this up on STATHEAD which is part of baseball . reference .. great site
Just throwing that out there
Only slightly worried,
Cdc – I responded to you yesterday with the 1903 record. 😆
Gamble is kind. Gambling that Grissom would be even close to value as Sale was like betting on Rockies to win world series.
Oh Red Sox fans loved it. Even many Braves fans hated it. They believed the prospect ranking sites. Breslow should know better though.
There were signs of Grissoms regression before then. I also think Sale NEEDED a change in scenery.
Grissoms regression? I never noticed any. He overachieved to me with that lucky small mlb sample size. Insanely high babip. And Red Sox ate it up.
I thought Sale looked great in Boston. NEEDED to stay healthy. Had some bad luck and just one of those guys who gets labeled injury prone.
Yeah, Sale was so good in the playoffs last year, and he’s been great this year too.
AI GM
Gambling that Grissom would be even close to value as Sale
=======================
There wasn’t a single RS fan that thought Sale was even tradeable, let alone getting a return. He was 17-18 over a 5 year period. With a salary of $27.5M.
The idea that we could get something back was ridiculous.
@JoeBrady
Correct. No idea why they believed that. I had a great day poking fun at them how they just gave away a playoff starter for a average at best 2b only prospect. And they even paid his salary. I would have became a Yankees fan after that trade but they cheered it on.
@So many
Expected to be better by people who are clueless. He is just as I expected. It was ridiculous they put him in top 100. Some even had him in top 50. He wasn’t even top 200. A low power 2b only. He had a fake mlb average from a high babip and apparently everyone fell for it.
All these comments about the Chris Sale trade, but no one mentioned that the main return to the Red Sox was the Braves paying $10M of Sale’s salary. Grissom was not the main return. When a team takes on significant money, the player return they send back is lower in value.
Trade was awful from day one. I seen it so a gm should have seen it. Braves would have taken on all of his salary and still made trade. Only difficult part of trade for them was to restrain from laughing until it was official. Sale was healthy as can be as he pitched enough to win cy young.
There was also concrete evidence of Sale’s inability to stay healthy or even stay available. Its easy to.judge im hindsight.
Yea just fire the guy that has turned around the pitching infrastructure in the Red Sox system in two years. His revamping of the pitching infrastructure is by far the most important and valuable thing he has done.
The Red Sox are loaded with quality pitching in the minor leagues they’re already stacked with young positional player talent at the big league level now the pitching is starting to show. If you look at the farm system it’s absolutely loaded with pitching talent. Tolle and Early are just the tip of the iceberg at every level there are exciting arms coming.
I believe one of the best trades that Breslow made that Breslow made was the Booser Fajardo trade. I believe it will play out as an absolute steal not to mention besides Buehler he has hit on every one of his free agent acquisitions. He was 50/50 on his deadline trades he acquired May who’s been a bust but he also acquired Matz who’s been quite good and a good bullpen addition. I mean most of the fans saw Early’s debut a lefty with 5 pitch mix and 94-96 mph fastball should he have traded him for a half season of Merrill? The answer is no. You will be seeing pitchers called up consistently for the next 3-5 years at least that are big league arms.
The Red Sox might have arrived a year early, I expected them to really contend in Breslow’s third season at the helm but there here and they aren’t going away. This is going to be a very good team for a very long time. Oh but yea let’s fire the guy that has helped put them on the cusp of being a playoff and World Series threat for years to come.
Breslow might be 50/50 on trades at the deadline this year, but he went 0-3 (I believe, Paxton, Garcia, Sims) last year. Not a good look. Cheaping out on pitching help when they really needed a good SP to help them push for the playoffs.
And you said this yourself, Breslow has turned around the pitching development for the Sox! This means that they (should) have a surplus of pitching talent. Here is a quick snippet of who is locked up for the next 6ish years:
Crochet
Bello
Tolle
Witherspoon
Early
And then even more SP prospects (Perales, Valera, etc).
They have many good positions players locked up for that time as well:
Anthony
Rafaela
Campbell
Mayer
Narvaez
With some guys locked up for like 3 or 4 years – Casas, Duran, Abreu.
So the team can afford to trade some of the prospects to win now. Prospects rarely reach their full potential, picking and choosing which ones to trade and which to keep is the difficult part of the job.
^^this. The fans only see a tiny fraction of the decisions made by a GM or POBO. All the staffing, training, equipment, scheduling, medical, etc. that has gone into taking this team from a 81 win mediocrity to a 95+ win contender, and with a long horizon for competitive play. Breslow has earned a few more years in Boston. If we see 2-3 years of poor performance from 2026-28, then it’ll be time to discuss a change at the top.
bcj – Breslow has at least 4 years, just like Dave and Bloom did. Henry is impulsive, but he’s not THAT impulsive …. and I’m pretty sure Breslow signed a 4-year contract.
Bruin – I had just finished making a list of all the current Red Sox pitching prospects, the young pitchers on the Red Sox, and the pitching prospects who were traded for Crochet and Narvaez. My Firefox crashed so I lost it, but it was probably around 45% acquired by Breslow, 45% acquired by Bloom, and 10% acquired by Dombrowski.
While we all know Bloom always focused on position players for early round draft picks, it does seem like some of his later round picks have progressed nicely.
So wouldn’t it be fair to say Breslow gets credit for less than half of the pitching talent?
Early, Dobbins, Guerrero, Rodriguez, Gonzalez and Perales, are just some of the young pitching talent that were not acquired by Breslow.
FPG Breslow has only been in charge for 2 years so it’s remarkable that he’s added this much pitching talent in that short amount of time. He also revamped the pitching infrastructure when he hired Willard and company. I remember talking about how his most important contribution to the Red Sox in his first season was the revamped pitching infrastructure while a lot of Red Sox fans were crucifying him for his lack of signings.
I always gave Bloom credit for rebuilding the farm system but the reality is he would never pulled the trigger on the Crochet trade. Bloom did draft some good pitching talent it’s a fallacy that Bloom didn’t draft pitching but a lot of that promise has been unlocked with the new pitching development team in place.
I believe that we are about to embark on a multi-year window of potential championship winning baseball. Breslow and his team has built a pitching factory in the minors. I mean the first three pitchers taken in this draft were all advanced college pitchers with big conference experience likely to start in High A and move quickly. I don’t comment on how a player looks until I get eyes on him in professional baseball but the future looks very bright for Red Sox pitching.
B12
Historically the Sox have either traded for or signed through free agency there ace pitcher(s). From Pedro, Price, Schilling, Beckett, Porcello,Lackey, Rodriguez,Dice-K and Crochet . Compare to guys we drafted and developed Clemens,Hurst, Bucholz,Lester and now hopefully Bello. Economically speaking,it’s a far better way and cheaper to develop great pitching. If they can build a pipeline of premium pitchers,it obviously will go a long way towards being successful.
Cdc – Great post! Please don’t get mad at me, but Schilling was drafted and mostly developed by the Red Sox.
I attended his games in New Britain 😄
FPG
You can’t put anything by you .. lol
All I know is we need a big win today to calm my nerves about the playoffs… Vegas .insider has the Yankees as a favorite today. Oof. whatever that means.
Is San Fran going to make the playoffs???? The Mets are awful. How would you like to be a fan of that team , good Lawd . This season there could be at least 10 teams that could win the WS. That’s incredible. Anyone of several teams that are not in the playoffs right now could get hot and win….. No clear favorite.. who do you like in the W.S.? I think Philly..
FPG
It did take Schilling 4 or or 5 years and a couple teams to really start pitching like an ace . He certainly should be in the H.o F. IMO. His playoff record alone should get him in. His big mouth and politics will keep him out. It’s a shame, because he doesn’t and will never get the credit for what he did to end the curse. We don’t win without him in 04. He tainted his massive contribution to the game. I hate saying that …
Bruin – What is your take on the huge turnover in scouting and the change in approach from in-person evaluations to strictly analytical evaluations?
cdc – I agree, there should always be separation of Church (of baseball) and State. The Hall should not be a popularity contest, nor should it be based on morals or beliefs. As long as the player doesn’t get banned from MLB or commit any crimes, they should be eligible.
I ignore the political stuff, but G38 outing Wake is what really turned me off to him.
cdc – Okay look at it this way …. we know Crochet is gonna win tonight, right? He always stops losing streaks.
So the Sox lost just ONE game in the standings this weekend, not a big deal. Up next are 3 against an A’s team they almost swept last week, followed by a Tampa team they did sweep 4 straight the last time they played them.
The ONLY series I have concerns about is the one up in Canada, but after that it’s smooth sailing.
The Rangers can’t possibly keep winning, although what they are doing is absolutely amazing! Bochy is a HOF manager who should win Manager of the Year this season. Can you imagine if Cora was the Rangers manager right now? If he was, the team would have packed it in long ago.
I don’t think SF will make the playoffs, but I would love to see Cincy or Arizona get in. See this is why all the people here who write off teams in July and August are kinda not bright ….. anything can happen, you can never predict the future. Who woulda thought Senga would be so bad he’d get sent down to the minors?
Who do I like in the NL for the WS? Or who do I like to win the WS?
I gotta stick with Milwaukee in the NL, not because they have the best record but because they are so fundamentally sound. I woulda picked Philly if Wheeler hadn’t gone down.
Oooooo pick me pick me pick meeeeee
Another situation of interviewing the next young savant within each of Milw/TB/Clev who seems overqualified or blocked in their current position.
If they just need someone to break bad news to players I’m available for cheap. Shouldn’t be relied on for actual decision making though.
Where were you when they signed Bregman?!
If Breslow wants a number two then he should just promote Cora. When people think of number two, Cora is always the first to come to mind! LOL!
First person I thought of!
Yes get him off the field and hire Varitek as HC
There’s no “HC” in baseball. The tar daddy would want Varitek as manager but Varitek doesn’t want the day-to-day hassles of being the skipper.
Fever – Cora as GM is absolutely frightening. The guy is an absolute bozo. Plus, he’s a cheater. He gets to wear the Scarlet Letter for life. Sorry.
let – Absolutely it is frightening. But we all know Cora wants to move up to the front office eventually, and we all know John Henry wanted Cora to interview for Bloom’s vacant position at the time …. that’s something we can never forget.
As for the cheating, what’s even worse is Cora bragged to the 2018 Red Sox players about the cheating ….. “stealing the 2017 World Series” …. right to the faces of players like Chris Sale who were direct victims of the 2017 cheating Astros.
Can I recommend Ben Cherington for the job?
Go hire the goof jim bowden, or steve phillips.
I can’t imagine anyone actually wanting to leave the Dodgers. (? and for the Red Sox?, really?)
Gonna have to be a lot of money and career experience…..
Many people would to double their salary and get a long contract. Obviously you wouldn’t leave if it was just a lateral move.
I’ll be the first to admit it was a terrible decision by the organization to fire Dave Dombrowski. We haven’t been back to the WS since he won it all in 2018. He has the Phillies making deep postseason runs every year and is great at trade deadline time. This year he be got the best reliever in Duran, a great veteran setup guy in Robertson and top bench guy in Bader. I know one thing for certain…DD would not have messed up the Devers move off 3b.
He has worked and became one the bestest ever…….
The Devers contract was weak. Trading him and having that $ to spend elsewhere is awesome.
He no longer fit Henry’s agenda for scaled-back spending. The Red Sox have a promising young team and a very strong balanced farm so it’s not all for naught. That would not be the case with DD still around.
I’m a firm believer that DD was let go because he wouldn’t trade Betts. He also wouldn’t have been dumb enough to poison the return by attaching a salary dump. Look at the returns for other superstars where they didnt include a salary dump – both WAS and SDP got really good prospects for Soto.
Those are all possible factors. Not including Price would have had a far greater return.
YBC – I dunno, coming off an injury-plagued 4.28 ERA season where he was more trouble than he’s worth, probably not a lot of demand for him.
The guy injured his wrist playing Fortnite and got into a shouting match with the beloved Eck ….. now THAT was a guy that truly needed to go, he wasn’t just standing up for himself like Raffy was.
The vision of not having a gm that knows how to communicate with players and not lead them on with clearly false narratives (i.e. lie to them)?
Or would it be the vision of a management team so inept the owner has to intervene to fix their issues with their face of the franchise player?
Or was it another vision the public isn’t aware of?
Yeah hire someone who will tell you that you need a starting pitcher not a pitcher who has only pitched over 100 innings once in his career what a waste of prospects for May
Where is Vaughn Grissom? That is going to go down as at least the worst trade in 25 years. I really don’t blame Breslow for it though, just like with Mookie I blame Henry on this one. I think Breslow was told to trade him because Henry had no faith in his squad. I really think John Henry thought when he fired Bloom it was going to be a full organizational rebuild. What I hold against Breslow is Priester ending up in Milwaukee. People gonna say Breslow didn’t know Priester would become a viable mid-rotation starter. He was drafted high, everyone knew his ceiling was high. The Devers situation was going to be ugly no matter who was GM because a third baseman had to be signed. Couldn’t do better than getting Bregman even if we overpaid for this season. So right now I’d give Breslow a B-, it does seem there is a real pipeline of talent in the farm.
The Devers situation didn’t need to be ugly. They didn’t NEED to sign a 3B. They had a multiple times all-star at that position.
But once they did sign one, this is all they had to say.
“Hey Raffy, we signed Bregman. He’s going to be our 3B. We would like for you to be our DH. Please continue to work on your glove at 3B and get some work in at 1B. This will allow us to keep your bat in the lineup as much as possible and give us a very flexible roster.”
Not
“Hey Raffy, you are the full-time DH. You’re not playing the field again because we got Bregman.”
It’s not hard.
They could have dumped Sale contract and got a fair return though if it was about salary. I just think they loved Grissom for some strange reason.
Priester trade was fine. Mid rotation? Maybe if you are looking at win loss era sure. Maybe for Milwaukee. Boston can do better than Priester though. They easily were able to do Crochet trade. Easily extended him. Can easily sign a big free agent or do another trade. With that draft pick they could have got someone with a much higher ceiling than Priester if they went hs arm. They went college but still got a upside arm. Probably be a good reliever if nothing else but hopefully start.
bum – Agree with you on the Sale trade. It’s bad enough the Sox got literally nothing for a guy who immediately won the Cy and Triple Crown and then followed it up with (so far) a 2.52 ERA 3.5 WAR season …. but to also pay $17M of his salary last year? It’s downright hysterical.
I don’t think Henry was involved in the Mookie trade, other than giving his blessing when Bloom proposed it. Owners typically don’t get involved in player moves, unless it’s a high profile player they are trying to keep.
Bloom was ordered to lower payroll that offseason, and trading Price with Mookie was the easiest way to accomplish that.
You’re being generous with a 2-year grade of B-.
Hopefully she sticks with the AUSL and continues to help the sport grow. It’s great to have someone who is connected to both sports for the support they might need for a bit. I love baseball but softball is way more fun to watch imo.
I’m not a Red Sox fan but if they keep their young core healthy, they are looking at 4-6 years of competitive baseball. Playoff baseball and more.
No worries. If you read the comments, half the folks here aren’t Red Sox fans.
They’re actually the opposite. They hate Red Sox ownership, they can’t stand Red Sox management, they abhor the field manager, and any player who’s been let go, traded, or left as a free agent is adored and should have never left.
And they hate Fenway and the city of Boston.
Joe, I wouldn’t go that far. They just don’t approve of anything the Red Sox do with trades, free agents, their current roster, or endgame management decisions.
Hating Fenway And the city of Boston? No that’s not accurate.
So I guess with you saying that you disagree with my assessment. OK cool. I appreciate that, all good.
All in on the Cora to GM thing. He’s under contract for next year and hiring a new manager would be beneficial to the youngsters. Agree Tek has no interest. Theo votes for David Ross as field boss (Cubbies together forever!) and the deal is done.
Bee – Why do you think Tek has no interest? You know he’s already interviewed with another team for a managerial position, right?
But yeah, Ross would be my second choice.
What makes anyone think Jason is manager material? What’s the evidence?
OK so some say he’s not interested. That could be evidence of 15 years as involved with the team but not advancing very much?
I need a little more information when it comes down to this Jason Veritek manager push.
Gary – Tek was the captain when he was still playing, in fact he had a big “C” on his jersey.
He was a catcher, and catchers historically make great managers.
He’s soaked up a lot of experience being in the dugout discussing strategies and supporting the players and coaching staff.
He was valued enough to be interviewed for a manager position by at least one other team.
Perhaps you’re thinking of the old days when MLB managers gained minor league managerial experience first ….. but the times have changed, many of today’s managers got their job with absolutely no experience. Cora had one year as a bench coach, that’s it. Boone had no experience at all.
I’m with you, I think guys SHOULD work their way through the minors as a manager before taking over a MLB team. But experience just isn’t valued much these days. It is what it is.
OK, that makes a lot of sense fever. I’m not expecting him to go through the minors at all.
I guess my red flag concerning his real interest in managing is the amount of time he’s been with the team yet hasn’t received consideration for the job?
Sure he interviewed for other jobs here and there as a trial for what may be ahead for him. But I guess I’m not sure what his intentions are?
Be involved in the game without much responsibility? Coach catchers, and a little bit of other stuff while offering his expertise?
I’m really not sure how this plays out?
Gary – This is only Tek’s 5th year in the dugout, that’s not a long time IMO. But to answer your question, how would he receive consideration for the Sox manager job when Cora has been the manager the entire time? You know Cora is a favorite of John Henry, and Breslow was forced to keep him as manager and extend him.
I think the fact Tek interviewed for a managerial job outside the organization is proof he does want to manage. Of course he would prefer to manage the Sox, but there can be only one Sox manager at a time ;O)
You have no idea what John Henry says to Craig Breslow.
Kim Ng in April became commissioner of the AUSL which is professional softball.
Breslow needs to hire Smith or Toboni or hire outside the Organization.Cora has zero experience doing any Front Office work and has proved over and over that he is disloyal.
Hopefully Nutting makes Cherrington available!
Anyway Breslow can get Dan Kantrovitz the VP of scouting from the Cubs? This guy has built a top 5 farm in Chicago and is a statistical savant. He has a BA in organizational behavior and a Masters in statistics. He’d fit nicely with Breslow.
We may want to hire an additional trainer instead. With Bernie going on the IL today, we are now up to 17 players injured. Can almost field a full team.
1b Casas, 2b Grissom, ss Mayer
OF Anthony, Abreau
SP Houck, Crawford, Sandoval, May, Fitts, Dobbins
RP Criswell, Bernardino, Guerrero, Winckowski,, Hicks, Hendricks
Craig – In all fairness, a couple of those guys are minor leaguers and they signed a few more of them while they were still recovering from injury. Nobody forced them to sign Sandoval, Hendriks, etc.
Well today’s lineup looks crappy because they are facing a righthander. Only one guy in the lineup with an OPS over .778 (Bregman) and FIVE guys with an OPS under .700
Let’s hope Gio is on today!
I heard a rumor George Costanza is available
Ghost – He has to get fired from his current job first.
How many GMs do you need to evaluate a player and offer a contract?
If the rumors are true that Ng turned down an interview to be POBO, then I question her sanity.
