Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:
1. Wild Card Series continues:
The Dodgers bested the Reds 8-4 yesterday to complete a two-game sweep of Cincinnati and advance to the NLDS against the Phillies. The other three Wild Card matchups all saw the team facing elimination force a Game 3, leaving us with plenty of baseball to enjoy today. Things will kick off in Cleveland, at 3:08pm local time, when Jack Flaherty and the Tigers face off against Slade Cecconi and the Guardians to decide who will represent the AL Central against the Mariners in the ALDS.
In Chicago, at 4:08pm local time, the Cubs take the field at Wrigley behind Jameson Taillon as they try to advance in the playoffs for the first time since 2017 against the Padres and former Cub Yu Darvish. Finally, the Wild Card series will wrap in the Bronx, at 8:08pm local time, when the Red Sox and Yankees conclude the latest chapter in their storied archrivalry. That game will feature two rookies, with Connelly Early taking the ball for Boston in light of Lucas Giolito’s recent injury. The Yankees will turn to right-hander Cam Schlittler.
2. Rockies searching for new leadership:
Bill Schmidt is out as Rockies GM after this year’s brutal 119-loss season. He was promoted from within the organization to take over for Jeff Bridich in May of 2021, who himself was promoted to the top job from within in organization back in 2014. For a franchise that has dealt with a lot of struggles and failure over the years, this stands out as a rare opportunity for the club to bring in an outside voice and see what that sort of breath of fresh air could do to rejuvenate the organization. Perhaps that could come in the form of someone with ties to the organization like Thad Levine, who is already rumored to be in the mix for the job. Of course, it’s at least possible that owner Dick Monfort could break with his past tendencies and look for a less familiar partner to help lead the Rockies back to the postseason for the first time since 2018.
3. Managerial vacancies continue to grow:
While the Rockies likely won’t have clarity on their managerial situation until they bring in Schmidt’s replacement, there’s still plenty of intrigue surrounding the various managerial vacancies that have been created around the game in the past few days. Yesterday, Atlanta joined the pile of teams searching for a new voice in the dugout after Brian Snitker opted to retire from the dugout, though he’ll remain in the organization for a landmark 50th season in an advisory role. The Braves have a talented core and could very feasibly be back in the playoffs as soon as next year, so they’ll be one of the more attractive managerial vacancies available for candidates to pursue.
Elsewhere, the rumor mill is buzzing over the possibility that Hall of Famer Albert Pujols could take a turn as manager. He’s a strong candidate to take over for Ron Washington and Ray Montgomery in Anaheim with the Angels. The Rangers, Giants, Twins, Nationals and Orioles are each in the market for a new manager as well, and there’s always the possibility that a playoff club will look to make a change following an earlier-than-hoped-for exit from the postseason field.

I could see AP as a manager. He has the ability to communicate to a wide variety of players in addition to the years of service in baseball. I mean why not?
Agreed. The Angels have nothing to lose letting Pujols be manager…. Besides more losing.
…which is everything
Bochy will be welcomed back to the Bay Area if he doesn’t retire. Would be awesome to see.
Buster already turned down the possibility of Bochy coming back to SF as a manager though he left the door open for a different role within the Giants organization, if Bochy wanted to consider it.
He didn’t exactly close the door on that. He just said he didn’t think they were going that direction.
@julyn82001, Was that recently? I haven’t heard that. Although I can see that being the case.
He’s 70 with bad knees and can barely walk. He’s done with managing he had a good career
70 isn’t that old. I saw Roger Daultry and Pete Townshend last night leap and sing like it was 1965, and they’re 80+
You saw who?
I’ll see your Daultry and Townshend, and raise you Sir Ringo Starr 85, and Sir Paul McCartney 83. Paul just played still plays 2..5 hour concerts, and Ringo around 2
Modern medicine has made such awesome strides with meds and more overall med technology filtering down to the common man, and these rock and roll warriors from the 1960’s consumed their lions share of illicit drugs, alcohol, and unprotected sex with groupies at a massive scale on top of everything else. Of course it caught up with some great ones: Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, Morrison and Keith Moon RIP.
Ignorant: I heard that doctors call this “the ageless society” because of all the advances in medicine and medical treatment.
Yeah I’m seeing it in real life too. My Dad is 88.5 years old, still driving, sharp as a tack, doing outstanding for his age (touch wood, touch wood). He never smoked, which I think has helped alot, always active…but yeah it’s amazing times. I’ll probably drop dead of a heart attack in my 50’s, haha so we’ll see how it goes. Enjoy every day. We are not guaranteed tomorrow. Knock off work early and enjoy some playoff baseball +!!!!!!
Every Yankees/Red Sox game boils down to both managers will mess up 2/3 of any given decision they have to make, so who gets more opportunities to mess up? Last night, Boone only had like 3 opportunities (if that) to screw something up, whereas Cora had nine (at least).
They should both make a pact that if either is fired the next manager also has to be a ding bat. Varitek and Posada are out. Make the next ones Kevin Millar and Chuck Knoblauch
Troy – Great post but isn’t dingbat one word? Archie never paused when he called Edith that. LOL
It is one word, but if alex ever sees it, I don’t want him to hurt himself trying to read it
If Chuck Knoblauch became a manager, would he have to pull pitchers from home plate because he couldn’t make it to the mound?
p.s. that was a managerial yips joke, for those unfamiliar with his career
p.p.s. I debated whether or not to make a yips joke about a guy whose career was ruined by them, but after looking him up, turns out he lied repeatedly about PEDs before finally admitting to taking them (even though they didn’t help, according to him) and abused several of his ex wives/gf. Not a very stand up guy, so, joke it is.
Canuck – Anybody who throws a baseball at Keith Olbermann’s mother deserves to be joked about.
Someone should throw one at Olberman himself.
Olbermann has done a few things that brought wrath. It should of been at Keith, Chuck never made the wisest choices.
Can you tell us a little more about the joke?
Chuck Knoblauch is too busy attacking his family.
Okay Knoblauch was a bad idea.
Is Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui busy at the moment? Damon could qualify for either. I know Manny wanted to be the hitting coach but Breslow said “Nah”
Mackey Sasser?
Troy – Hard no on Damon. The dude looks like Sam Kinison and parties like 2011 Charlie Sheen.
Pedro should be Boston’s pitching coach. If he could teach his changeup oh my
Reds should look for a new manager after wild card elimination, they were destined to the World Series.
Nice-but in all seriousness Philly seems like the only club with a decent shot of denying LAD the first back-to-back WS titles in a long time. They will use starters if they have to if only a couple BP arms are trusted.
The Dodgers actually had a losing record against the Phillies, Cubs, and Brewers in the regular season this year. They were even swept in 6 games by the Brewers.
Granted, the Dodgers are more of a playoff built team and have had less impactful injuries than the other teams mentioned, but I wouldn’t write them in as the WS winner just yet. It isn’t basketball afterall
Heck, the Angels swept the Dodgers in all six games in 2025, going 6–0 in the series. I would give all three a chance.
johnrealtime, there have been countless examples of a team dominating someone in the regular season, only to fall to them in the postseason. I believe those Brewers wins against LA came during their 14 game winning streak and all those Cubs games came in April.
@fred-3
There are also countless examples of super teams that don’t make it to the world series.
I am just pushing back against the concept that the Phillies are the only club with a decent shot of stopping the Dodgers. This is playoff baseball, anything can happen and no team is anointed
Sure, I’m just saying I wouldn’t use regular season head-to-head match-ups as a reason to why they wouldn’t win.
I agree with you there. I was providing anecdotal evidence that they can be beaten.
I think the Dodgers are the most likely to win it all (a very hot take, I know). I look forward to rooting against them every step of the way
I’ve got Phillies-Mariners in WS. Phils win it all.
Raulp, I think you left the word general out before manager. Fixed it for you.
The Sox are gonna lick Schlittler like an apple fritter.
Update?
🙂
Roki Sasaki suddenly and accidentally becoming one of the most important people at his job is the most amusing thing to happen so far. 11 pitches, 2 Ks, bare minimum number of batters faced. “Great Rivera impression. Now do it another 5 times.”
How is this amusing?
Tarik Skubal is the CYA Winner. I just realized that Crochet gave up bombs to both Anthony Volpe and Austin Hedges. Sorry, Garrett but when we have to split hairs, it ends up coming down to something as silly as that.
Also Chas McCormick, Brayan Rocchio, Eric Wegmann, and Alex Jackson. Tighten up, Garrett
Here is a thought, Pujols as manager, and he brings in Yadi Molina as his bench coach, Wainwright as pitching coach, no wait that’s my dream for St Louis.
@jm Pujols has in fact said that when he becomes a manager he’s bringing Yadi in on his team, so you’re partially right.
I’m so glad that the Astros got knocked out by the Tigers the last two years because the Yankees can never figure out how to beat the Astros in the playoffs. 2024 and 2025 might be their only chances to get to the World Series for a while, so need to not screw it up.
Phillies/Dodgers will be fun… whats the over/under on Bryce arguing with someone. AL Central had to go to game 3 ..that last month was crazy. Cubbies and Pads is a toss up ..I feel like the bullpens will be a deciding factor. 2 rookies going in game 3???? Another page in the great Red Sox Yankees rivalry
It was more of a successful season than an “unsuccessful” one for Anaheim, when the true arrival of Addell, the rise and surge of Teodosio (thanks largely to the support of Fish Man), very bright spots in the pitching staff, Neto, loyalty, intangibles, fan experience, etc etc etc are taken into account. A more successful season than not and a huge amount to be proud of and surge on next season. It could easily be argued that if Anaheim acquired either Grisham or Bellinger that they would immediately be back in contention, especially considering the further improvements of their other players going forward. And it could easily be argued that if Anaheim acquired both Grisham and Bellinger, that they would be all but guaranteed a playoff berth next season. It was definitely a successful season overall when the overall picture is considered.
Please ignore the troll “TeodosioFan” (Backinthebleachersis, TheOpener, The Voices, Evan Stanleyson, TrojanToss, oi0ewt98er, TheFormerPlayer, Fan of the Umpires, VoiceofREASON, soulefh, Owensboro, 88 Brooklyn Dodgers, BinHenders, California 8, Alvo Sumatro, tikiagedola, Masculinetimwaltz, rachelmaddowishot, and Boycottsidneysweeney).
Thank you, MLBTR.
He may be a troll, but he’s not really that far off. The Angels showed flashes of being good this season. The team just needs a hitting coach that teaches hitting, not “end the at bat with your pitch” garbage that Johnny Washington spews.
The Rockies need management that can recognize young talent and develop it
They clearly cant do that now and for years past
You could have stopped with the first four words.
Thank you for your response
May I have another sir
It’s going to be a fun game tonight. Early will be making his fifth career start. The Yankees will need to work up his pitch count to get to a tired Red Sox bullpen. Hopefully, Chapman comes into the game with his team trailing.
Have to admit, I am rooting for the Sox. 🙂
The Dodgers have home field advantage in the World Series against all matchups except the Yankees and Jays.
Who would’ve thought it’s coming down to two rookie pitchers for all the marbles? It’s gonna be a great environment as always. These kids are at the pinnacle much sooner than they thought they would and that’s freakin awesome.
Rookie vs rookie in Yankee Stadium in October. How do you even begin to pontificate that?!? I’d say the team that scores the most runs wins tonight.
Pontificate? I’ve been accused of that.
@BlueSkies_LA
Me too. I can give you my lawyers name?
Dewey, Cheatum and Howe?
Tony Howe is the best litigator since Alina Habba! :o)
No. It’ll be the team that gives up the least amount of runs.
Until Arte sells the Angels, does it really matter who manages the team?
“While the Rockies likely won’t have clarity on their managerial situation until they bring in Schmidt’s replacement”- that is some deep thinking, and obvious
Don Mattingly.
I’ve been a lifelong fan of his. As such, I’d LOVE to see him get another chance at managing this offseason. (And really enjoy that his son Preston is the Phillies GM).
Order of preference would be:
Orioles
Rangers
Giants
Twins
As a Phillies fan it would be difficult if he landed the Braves or Nationals job. But I would much prefer him there to the Rockies or Angels.
Anyways — I realize he may not get the managing job anywhere. And I know some feel he’s “very average” at best a manager. But with the Blue Jays having a good year, and Mattingly serving as their bench coach, I’m hoping he gets the chance to interview for some of the openings.
The Rox are beyond pathetic, and beyond repair. Thankfully, for them i.e., the fans still show up in droves to watch downright awful baseball played by mostly middling to awful players.
