Giants team chairman Greg Johnson and general manager Zack Minasian have each downplayed the idea that the team will be pursuing long-term (and therefore more pricier) pitching signings this offseason, due to both the risk associated with such contracts and the number of lengthy and expensive contracts already on San Francisco’s books. As such, it probably isn’t a big surprise that “a lot of their market pitching inquiries have been for more modestly priced arms,” according to ESPN’s Buster Olney.
The context of Olney’s report comes in the context of speculation that the Giants could be a suitor for Tatsuya Imai, as it would seem the Giants might not be willing to meet Imai’s asking price. There is a widespread belief that Imai’s eventual contract will run deep into the nine figures — MLB Trade Rumors projects a six-year, $150MM deal for Imai, who ranked seventh on our list of the offseason’s top 50 free agents.
If the Giants were going to make a longer-term commitment to a pitcher, Imai might fit the bill given his relative youth (he doesn’t turn 28 until May) and naturally his excellent track record in Nippon Professional Baseball. Imai’s recent interview on the Hodo Station show also caught the attention of Giants fans, as Imai suggested that while he’d enjoy playing with the Dodgers, “winning against a team like that and becoming a world champion would be the most valuable thing in my life. If anything, I’d rather take them down.”
Still, Imai’s ability to carry his success over to Major League Baseball isn’t seen as a sure thing amongst evaluators. If San Francisco was going to splurge on a top-end starter, spending big on a pitcher who’s more proven against MLB hitters would seem to carry more appeal to a Giants organization that wants to minimize risk in its rotation investments (that is, if the Giants decided to spend big on any pitcher at all).
While there’s no such thing as having too much frontline pitching, the Giants are already ahead of a lot of teams by having a clearcut ace in Logan Webb. Robbie Ray also pitched well in 2025 after missing most of the 2023-24 seasons recovering from Tommy John surgery. This duo gives the Giants two starters they can count on to take the ball in a playoff series, plus homegrown starter Landen Roupp also pitched well in his first extended taste of big league action in 2025. However, there isn’t any proven depth beyond this group, making the rotation a priority for Buster Posey’s front office this winter.
If the Giants are primarily looking at second- or third-tier options, there’s still plenty of talent to be had amongst veteran arms who might be limited to shorter-term contracts based on their age alone. Signing Justin Verlander to a one-year, $15MM deal last offseason worked out for the team, so re-signing Verlander or perhaps seeking out this winter’s version of a “Verlander contract” with another pitcher is more the Giants’ speed. Inking at least one veteran to eat innings and stabilize at least one rotation spot would allow San Francisco’s younger pitchers some space to compete amongst themselves for a fifth starter’s role, and ideally one could emerge as Roupp did last year.
Though there’s some sound reasoning behind the Giants’ approach to starting pitching, the strategy probably isn’t going to sit well with Bay Area fans wondering why the team isn’t willing to spend at a higher level. The Giants have exceeded the luxury tax threshold just once in the last eight seasons, as after paying a minimal tax bill in 2024, the club ducked back under the line again in 2025. Johnson’s non-committal stance towards paying the tax or even exceeding $200MM in payroll space also doesn’t lend itself to the idea that San Francisco is planning anything truly substantial on the spending front this winter, and certainly not on the pitching side.

Cody Ponce come on down !
Signed with Blue Jays. 3 years for 30 million was more than Giants were willing to spend. Ownership is not serious about winning.
I predict the Giants are going to have another moderately okay year.
I predict Ponce & a trade for another SP.
You’ll get an overpriced #5 x2 and you’ll like it gosh darn it
Yeah that’s fine. Worked out great for my Os last season
Just because we’re bereaved doesn’t make us saps!
It’s our most modestly priced receptacle.
Devers contract through the 2033 season.
Is there a Ralph’s around here?
Sometimes you eat the bear, and, uh
I am the walrus?
Coo coo ca choo you are.
I’m so glad the comments section came through on this one.
There’s a pattern starting to form. I don’t know if it’s collusion per se, but it seems pretty clear teams are not excited about going into a CBA negotiation after having just spent a ton of money. Gonna be some bargains later in the off-season.
Of course there is collusion. They all been given instructions by idiot Manfred to cry poverty as much as possible knowing g his stupid a large portion of the fans are.
That’s not collusion.
About a third of the league has TV deals that expire in the next year or two.
Pretty hard to take on a 5-10 year contract with 2 years of TV revenue.
I’m generally fully pro player but that reality can’t be ignored.
Agreed, and that doesn’t take into account all the messy tv deals (RSN/DSG) that fell apart for clubs over the last few years.
I’m also very pro-player, but you bring up valid points that are concerns for many teams. But I’d argue the Giants are one of the least affected. They have privately-financed gem of a ballpark that’s been basically paid off, one of the biggest markets in MLB that’s gotten more spacious since the A’s left the Bay, their TV situation is more stable than most, and they have a gaggle of ultra-wealthy people in their ownership group. They can afford to break the luxury tax more often, and they should given the $500M+ allocated to just Devers, Chapman, and Adames. Now is the time to make some splashes. Attendance rebounded in a big way in SF after Buster came in and made some splashes, but that goodwill is doomed to quickly evaporate with another .500 season or two
SF is my favorite ballpark. Just gorgeous. Wrigley and Fenway are cathedrals but if we’re just talking ballpark, SF is amazing.
I’ve only been to 11 current ballparks and have heard Pittsburgh is incredible, but thus far SF is my #1.
Well, the fact of the matter is; if MLB would provide the American public.with quality sports production (i.e. = teams trying to win), no teams would be worrying about TV contracts because they would have full public support.
Since these Ivy leagues types started sneaking into the front offices, it is no longer about baseball but squeezing every last dollar out of the fans. We no longer get have a bunch of rich guys owning sports teams for their egos, being socially engaged with their city = not even trying to fiegn it anymore = just scrxxxxxing the public.
That’s why they have to worry about TV contracts.
Pretty sure Imai’s statement was not translated correctly. He actually said,
Duck the Fodgers !
I guess no Tatsuya Imai, Framber Valdez, and Ranger Suarez.
More like Scherzer and Verlander.
With a 1 and 2 starter like Scherzer and Verlander, you could win the 2019 world series.
You couldn’t win 2012
Could be smoke & mirrors, or maybe just an opinion of a lil guy in a bow tie.
I’m not so sure Framber Valdez would be a good fit culture wise. Definitely a really good lefty but he’ll be out of Giants price range anyway. It’s true they can afford him but I just don’t think it’ll happen at the price and length he’ll be seeking.
I think he wants 30 million when he’s 40 or something.
I’ve watched Valdez pitch and he can be the best pitcher or the worst pitcher. He has stretches where he’s lights out and ones where he’s like an AAA pitcher pitching in the MLB.
Valdez and Suarez are going to command much more but passing on imai send like it would be a mistake. You could at least go with a few years guaranteed and then some sort of opt out or option involved maybe something more incentive laden.
5-years, player option in the fourth year.
Yeah, there going to get Cease like deal. The only thing that stops Valdez is age. Suarez is the fact he pitches like 150 innings not 200.
Earl Scheib won’t sell them one for $49.95.
Cease’s overpay signing probably means Boras is pricing Imai out of Giants market – including other teams
Imai would be a great fit for the Giants but not at unreasonable $$$ & years Boras demanding. Rather walk away & purse other options than meet Boras’ demands
Posey will find the right SP & RP that not only for reasonable $$$ & truly wants to be Giants. In the end, Posey will do what’s best for the Giants. Fans just have to trust him
The Giants are a top tier market they should be able to afford anything.
Not saying they should.
Definitely trust Posey before the BS of Olney. Never trust a lil bow tie guy at face value. He’s the wrong Buster.
dude, if you’re going to disparage someone twice, at least get the correct person. Ken Rosenthol wears the bow tie you dink.
Or before calling someone a dink you could check yourself and find out you just may be wrong.
Olney is indeed a lil guy in a bow tie.
Ok sorry Buster I’m wrong.
There are enough quality starters available this off season (in FA & trades), that the Giants will come away with two. I’d be happy with Imai, Gallen, Suarez, Bassit, in a real pinch Kelly, Ponce (but too expensive for SF to go after Valdez, unfortunately).
Cease not an overpay
Prediction: all the owners will cry poor this winter as a leverage tactic for the next CBA negotiations. After a new one is signed, the next offseason will have a bunch of spending
That prediction is already off in November.. Cease got a fortune for being durable (not top notch starter). Helsley did well for a fingers crossed “bounceback” with opt out and Iglesias high 1yr $ for really old closer.
There will be plenty of 9 figure signings due to several bidders interested at the top of the FA ranking lists.
That’s a good point. I was pretty shocked at that sticker price. I thought MLBTR was predicting just a tad high when they went with $189 million. This is just shaping up to be a slow starting offseason, is all. Seen plenty of those before.
Iglesias got the same $16M a year he’s earned over the last 3 years of his previous deal. He’ll be 36 in January. Typical Braves strategy because they often slightly overpay for 1 year deals. Nothing at all surprising about the deal. Several closers older than him—Jansen (38), Chapman (will be 38 in Feb.) Kirby Yates (39) was a part time closer for LA (3 saves in 5 chances) included in his 50 total appearances.
No. Iglesias previous deal earned him $10m in 22, then $16m in 23, 24 and 25. I am inclined to agree with you that it’s a little bit of an overpay because I think you can easily argue Iglesias has declined some.
However, 1 year contracts always cost a little more unless its a prove it deal like Donaldson was, for example. Otherwise, I am sure someone would have gone to 2, maybe even 3 years for him because he has a pretty good track record.
Think you misunderstood what I said. “Iglesias got the same $16M a year he’s earned over the last 3 years of his previous deal.” That means he earned $16M in 2023-2025 and will be paid that same $16M in 2026 as well. Why else say “No” then repeat exactly what I said? I made no reference to the first year of the $58M 4 year deal specifically because—as you mentioned— he didn’t earn $16M in the initial season of the deal.
You’re 100% right on Cease. It is hard to find consistently durable starting pitchers, so a bit of an overpay for a number 2 or 3 starter that will give you 30 starters and 175 innings is not surprising. Jays have made a habit of attaining these types of pitchers (Gausman, Berrios, Bassit), so I’m not shocked that it’s where Dylan landed either.
Cease is a very good starter, and the money he got is right in line with what similar pitchers have gotten.
So they don’t want anyone then
That’s very White Sox of them!
That was good.
More pricier 😀
More pricier?
Really??
Profit
Can JV handle another season of Ryan Walker blowing leads?
The Red Sox look like a fit for JV if he was to take a pay cut.
The A’s would be a good fit but he probably doesn’t want to pitch at Sutter Health Field in Sacramento. Could get a lot of wins with the A’s over the next two seasons. The A’s can score runs and they could piece together a very nice bullpen.
Giants should sign Martin Perez.
I don’t think JV comes back to SF after last year. It wasn’t only on Walker. But I think Detroit makes the most sense.
He’s Def not going back. He wants wins
Logan Webb won 15 games, Robbie Ray won 11.
There could be double digit wins in SF for Verlander.
It’s a matter of settling into the longview. Potentially five more seasons to get 300. Take that approach to it and play to win a title.
The Giants bullpen looks shaky on paper. They could meld and be good. Could be a disaster too.
Shopping at the Million Dollar Store and Five Million Below.
Trade idea. Kansas City needs LF and San Francisco needs pitching. How about Noah Cameron 9-7 2.99 ERA 5 years control and starting pitching prospect Drew Beam ETA 27, for Heliot Ramos. Maybe even toss in relief pitcher Angel Zerpa. Cameron, Beam, & Zerpa for Heliot Ramos is a fair deal.
If KC did that they would still need an LF. Ramos is a DH only player.
You would need to add Eldridge, possibly Gilbert and Whisenhunt. Basically, ain’t gonna happen.
@antibelt lmao you’re funny
PFSKC#7—
Despite what others may say, I think your deal makes sense for both sides. Ramos is a pure hitter but his defense is only wonky going back on the ball. Going toward the ball he’s excellent. He needs coaching but his bat is for real and he’ll only get better.
Of course that would mean the Giants have to find another starting outfielder, preferably RH.
I’d rather have Cameron than Ramos. Ramos really fell off in the second half this year.
Paticularly fair for SF. Not only are the values imbalanced (Ramos has career 2.7 bWAR; Cameron was 3.8 bWAR in his rookie season) but a small market team like KC is not giving up that much controllable, young talent..
Have you seen Kansas City’s outfield especially LF production ? It sucks my friend. I would take Ramos and his nice bat/low fielding percentage in a heartbeat. KC should bring back Yaz as FA as 4th outfielder/batter against lefties for Cags in RF and Isbel in CF. The outfield would look a lot better in KC and San Francisco gets a good young SP with years of control and Beam who is slotted as #4 or #5 starter.
A cheap SP such as Cameron is like gold in the trade market. Ramos would be a joke headliner other than an amateur fantasy league. KC could get a really good OF with years of control and a decent second player.
I don’t now Cameron, but yeah, young starting pitching is the most valued commodity in the game. I’m thinking getting it is going to cost a lot more than a Ramos.
It will.
KC needing an OF doesn’t mean they’d trade a good young pitcher for Ramos. Lots of teams need “good young pitchers.”
Sea- like every single one of them
You might might get Beam with Ramos, if you’re lucky. I hope you were just blowing smoke with this trade proposal.
Verlander’s W-L record is hard to consider a good thing for Giants or him unless all the no decisions were wins for the Giants.
Burnes was a hot commodity FA last offseason. Sports writers were predicting Giants as favorites to land Burnes. Turns out Giants were never really contenders for Burnes.
Posey (1st POBO) was being 2nd guessed for not signing Burnes. Turns out Burnes really only wanted to sign with DBacks.
Posey’s due diligence & decision def saved Giants $$$. And how did it turn out for DBacks – surgery cost him season & parts of 2026
If the Giants don’t want to overspend on pitching then they need to make at least one big splash trade.
This team is ready to compete but it needs help. If the Mets are serious about moving Senga and SFG isn’t on his no trade list then go get him and McNeil. But it’s gonna be an expensive trade in terms of prospects. Or sign Merrill Kelly, trade for a 2B like McNeil or Lowe and count on internal players to fill in the blanks. Or trade for Luis Castillo.
There’s lots they can do. Whether they spend big with money or prospects the team needs help. Doing nothing shouldn’t be an option.
I’m hoping they put up Eldridge as part of a package for Hunter Greene. If Greene is not doable, whatever it takes to beat out others for Mackenzie Gore.
Funny how before Eldridge’s debut the thought of trading him was a sin.
Now? You don’t hear Giant fans saying he’s untouchable anymore. I think his upside is still too great to move him now. SFG should pony up for some pitching and let Bryce develop for one more season. He’s still too young to move and give up on.
No, you just see a bunch of people that don’t understand stats wanting to trade him. They look at a low average in his first 28 ABs (tiny sample) and declare him a failure but not his advanced stats which all looked really good
I’m not giving up on Eldridge. I just want good young pitching and that’s what’s it’s going to cost.
Merrill Kelly is the the perfect fit. He’s very good, but he’s older and not perceived as an elite arm—thus, he won’t be all that expensive nor he will demand too many years on a contract.
If I am the giants I don’t want McNeil
Gallen could actually be moderately priced after last season.
More likely a Verlander and/or Scherzer.
Modest Priced Pitchers you say?As My Friend Rudy Russo would say .
.Oh hey, terrific, terrific. That’s what were here for Stan. Here you can look, browse, peek, touch, feel, taste, smell, do anything you want, take all the time you want. Nobody’s going to pressure anybody around here Stan. You know something else Stan, I really think you outta buy this Buick, uh huh, I think you outta buy it today, right now. You wanna know why? Because this Buick is you! The color is you, look at it, this is your car! Stanley Dewoski is Buick Centurion Convertible. Now I know what you are thinking Stan, you’re thinking, can I afford to buy a car like this? Huh, am I right? Seriously Stan, you can’t afford to not buy a car like this. I’m going to make this easy on you. If you add this whole thing up, taking in inflation rate, insurance savings, gas savings, ease and comfort, you’re going to come in about ten thousand ahead in making this deal. well how the ease of owning a Buick Centurion Convertible can’t measure in terms of dollars and cents.
How about trading Heliot Ramos, Christian Koss and Tristan Beck for Kodai Senga then sign Imai. That’ll set up a nice Pacific Rim pitching rivalry with LA.
I like it but Mets don’t need Koss. Giants could use McNeil though.
McNeil arguably does not make the giants better
I’d take McNeil to make a Senga happen and substitute Fitzgerald for Koss, which might be more appealing to the Mets.
I agree on Fitzgerald being traded. Even if he pans out for another team, I don’t think he’ll amount to much with the Giants. He was horrible on offense last year but the Giants stuck with him (too long imho) and he just looked terrible at the plate.
Mets are trying to improve their defense not make it worse.
Koss is an excellent defender with a cannon arm and good speed.
Olney is a Dodgers fan.
Most people are.
👎
It’s hard living a life of jealousy and hate. I feel for you.
Ponce & Scherzer, Tyler Rogers, Devin Williams and hopefully Harrison Bader.
Meh, that’s moving laterally on everyone but Rogers & Williams. Giants need to do more.
It’s all been explained before. They have got a number of longish big contracts on the books and they either can’t afford another one and/or don’t want the inflexibility of another one. Cool. They couldn’t have tried harder to be up front about it. All good. Do what you got to do, just do it well.
Keller seems like a fit. Reasonably priced, fairly reliable mid to back end pitcher who is prone to haveing a couple blowout games in the second half.
I don’t see a lot on the pipeline prospect list that blows me a way with near term offensive productions. That assumes Bryce would be off the table as he should be in this situation. But there is enough talent in the MLB pipeline to make it happen without Bryce if you are less worried about getting 2026 offense in PIT in this type of trade
Most of these public statements are just posturing. Nobody wants agents hearing they are flush with cash and ready to spend it.
Then again, a third of the league is on the last year or so of their TV deals, most already having been reduced.
It could be worse, the Giants could be focusing on more modest pitchers.
Giants should be focused on short term deals for pitchers. Skubal will be a free agent next season, and SF is such a likely landing spot: competitive team, great pitchers’ park and Skubal is from the bay area.
Oh, no! There’s no money in baseball anymore. Better shut it all down and start from scratch. Get back to the days of if the player shows up and plays the game, they get paid. If not, too bad for them.
Nah. Just recognise there’s probably not as much of it as fans have thought and adjust the sights accordingly. It’s no problem at all.
@foppert3
It’s not really the fault of the fans or the players. Ownership and management inflated the salaries. Now the money just doesn’t seem to be there to sign huge contracts that the players expected.
It’s definitely MLB orchestrated. It’s a PR onslaught. Doesn’t mean it’s not true. The onslaught could very easily be “we need to let the fans know the situation.”
A small minority have. Not so much participation in driving up salaries for the majority. Statements like they have been making is all they can do. It’s up to the individual if they want to listen or not.
I’d be worried if I was a Tucker.
Cease did great though. The Jays didn’t muck around. So we will see what happens.
@foppert3
Expectations need adjusting. But that’s kind of the point I’m making: the front offices helped create those expectations by handing out decade-long deals like candy for years. Now they’re acting shocked that players want the same treatment. Fans didn’t set that market; teams did.
Ummmmmmm agents like Scott Boros inflated the salaries. He always made it “seem” likely his clients multiple teams vying for his clients. And theirs was that “mystery” team too that he never devulge the name of.
Also arbitration seem to always raised the bar too. It made annual salaries rise faster than it otherwise would have. It was Angel owner Gene Autry who warned other owners not to give in and let the players have arbitration when negotiating a new CBA as it make salaries skyrocket.
It’s just the way the market evolved. Big Steve entered the fray, the Dodgers were flush and ready to dominate everywhere. Yankees had to respond. The next tier down trying not to be left behind. It’s just how it all rolled out at the top. No ones fault. Just rich people trying to win.
It’s Scott Boras’ job to get the most money for his clients, not to “protect baseball”. If the owners didn’t want to pay the money, then they could have – radical thought here – not signed the contract!
As far as arbitration goes, it’s based on market rate. The owners signed the contracts that raised the market rate, so the arbitration awards keep pace with those contracts.
They have to get out of the Lee contract.
Why? It isn’t pushing them over the tax and only has two years after this if he doesn’t opt out. Really they need to move him to a corner
A corner would defeat the whole purpose of having him. He needs to lead off center field. Ok, maybe another half season to check him out, but he’s going to have to really produce this year.
it doesn’t at all. if you are willing to trade for kwan and put him in right then having lee there is kind of the same thing
More than one team is in on these “modestly priced pitchers” so teams better strike earlier rather than later. In the division alone, both ARI and SDP definitely doing more than browsing. This ain’t the Pirates and Marlins smokescreen.
Haven’t seen Jean Matrac on here. He’s always been on every conversation about the Giants. Hope to see him soon.
