Giants chairman Greg Johnson discussed several topics in an interview with John Shea of the San Francisco Standard, including some talk about how the team plans to spend this winter. As usual with any upper-level executive, Johnson spoke in generalities about payroll rather than citing any specific figures, and downplayed the idea of any huge spending splashes. For instance, while Johnson cited “starting pitching help” as “probably No. 1 on the list” of offseason priorities, he said the Giants would “be very cautious about” signing a pitcher to a nine-figure contract.
As to whether or not the Giants would exceed the threshold of $200MM in spending, “it just depends on what’s out there. We may be over. We may be under,” Johnson said. “We’re going to look at each situation and make the decision and see how it fits into not only next year, but the longer-term plans.”
San Francisco has exceeded the Competitive Balance Tax line four times in their history. They paid the tax in each of the 2015-17 seasons, as a function of the rising costs associated with trying to keep their championship core from the early 10’s teams together. The club also narrowly exceeded the tax line in 2024, as a function of the Giants making a series of pricey acquisitions during the 2023-24 offseason.
In 2025, the Giants ducked back under the tax line, even after some more prominent moves — i.e. extending Matt Chapman, signing Willy Adames to a seven-year/$182MM free agent deal, and their June trade for Rafael Devers. Even with these salaries involved plus major commitments to Logan Webb, Jung Hoo Lee, and Robbie Ray, San Francisco’s books are relatively clean since almost all of the team’s money is tied into just these six players. Ray is also a free agent next winter, leaving more space open for longer-term commitments even though Johnson is wary of such contracts.
“We can go up [in spending], but I think the risk is having too many people on similar six-year-type deals that create less flexibility to the payroll,” Johnson said. “I think you can always do things on a shorter basis, but you’ve got to be careful about having too many of your players being late 30s at a high-payroll level. I think you have to balance that.”
San Francisco fans may not love hearing about ownership’s financial caution, yet pretty much any owner or front office executive would share Johnson’s concerns on overspending now on players who could soon be future albatrosses. This was, in fact, the very situation the Giants found themselves in during their previous highest-spending years, once some of the key players from their World Series teams started to decline.
There’s also the fact that the Giants are far enough under that $200MM line that there’s room for the team to spend rather substantially this winter while still remaining under the threshold. Cot’s Baseball Contracts estimates the Giants at roughly a $152.7MM payroll and a $182MM tax figure for 2026, while RosterResource’s estimates are a bit higher ($169.3MM payroll and a $192.4MM tax number).
Whichever estimate you prefer, Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey figures to have financial flexibility in pursuing more big-ticket targets this winter. Upgrading the pitching staff (not to mention the team’s other needs) likely won’t come cheap, and with just one winning record in their last nine seasons, the Giants figure to again be very active in trying to get back into contention.

Lowe or Torres at 2B?
Not Torres please.
And I didn’t realize that as bad a defender Torres is, Lowe is even worse. So please no on both.
Agreed. No on both. Maybe Arraez?
I still believe the Giants should give Casey Schmitt a shot at 2B in 2026. I think if they give him steady playing time he could be the answer. Absolutely a really strong defender and he made some really good progress on offense in 2025. Give him the kind of leash that Fitzgerald was given last year. Schmitt also has pretty good pop in his bat. Hell, Fitgerald had 10 RBI’s or so mid season before the experiment finally ended with demotion to AAA for good. Sure would save some money if Schmitt keeps improving. He’s also a great backup to Chapman and Adames if needed. My 2 cents.
I’m on board unless a huge upgrade is made like Bichette. Casey has upside that looks like it can develop with regular playing time.
I like him for backup. He played all the infield positions last season but his D is below average.
He is basically a replacement level player which makes him a good candidate for top bench spot.
Upgrade Giants!
I agree his defense is good, but his best asset is his arm. 2B is more about range which savant/statcast has Schmidt as below average. He could improve with more dedication to the position.
His sweet spot rate was 95 percentile which makes up for some defense issues.
If they add a quality arm to the middle of the rotation, add a couple high-leverage bullpen arms with closer experience, and a reliable fifth starter/swingman, then I’m happy with Schmitt at second. He showed a substantial leap in maturity of at bats, working the count instead of chasing at every breaking ball out of the zone. He started the year playing first base for the first time in the short side of the platoon, then he learned second base (his second new position of the season). Plus, he got hurt right as he seized everyday at bats and started hitting well a few weeks before the All Star break. It’s encouraging to go through all that after his past struggles in 2023-24 only to bounce back in August/September and show stretches of quality defense and more of that improved approach (and the occasional moonshot home run). For all these reasons, I have significantly more confidence and hope in his chances to stick at second base than I had in Tyler Fitzgerald a year ago. Schmitt’s power isn’t a mirage, and if he continues to be selective, he’ll put himself into good counts and force pitchers to give him something in the zone that he can crush 440 feet into the bleachers. Plus, his defense prowess will likely only shine even more now that he’s actually had some time to play second base.
If the Giants don’t start the year with a better, deeper rotation and a reinforced bullpen, then they’ll have to pick up the slack on offense and I can see the logic of investing in a proven second baseman. But given the current roster and the ability to lure quality pitching with a big check and the opportunity to pitch at Oracle Park, beefing up the pitching seems like the logical and most efficient way to improve the club. Plus, there aren’t a ton of clear upgrades out there. Spending $15M on a guy like Gleyber Torres or Jorge Polanco may not move the needle much (if at all) but it would be $15M less to spend on a setup/closer candidate and at least one quality source of rotation innings. So I’m all-in on giving Schmitt the keys to the keystone in 2026. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
Yeah and don’t forget that behind Schmitt is koss who did well himself. It really seems like shopping for a long term contract at 2b would do nothing but waste resources in a position with serviceable depth while l leaving holes in places without options, namely pitching and possibly the outfield
Also our last draft pick was a college level 2B, so yes go for the arms first.
I’d like to see them go outside the organization for 2B. Trying for Bichette, which would be problematic, or Brendan Donovan.
Schmitt just isn’t an MLB every day guy. Since he can play multiple positions a utility role is best. Schmitt has had 738 PAs, so it isn’t too soo to draw some conclusions. His only strength is when he does make contact. His launch angle is excellent. Trouble is that contact is too infrequent. Though he’s improved his chase rate, it’s still poor. In 2025 he was in the bottom 26 percentile for chase. His exit velo, hard hit, barrels, whiff, K, and BB percentiles are all average at best, but mostly below average.
Koss is a better fielder than Schmitt, and hit better in his first season than Schmitt did in his. If they can’t sign Bichette, and I doubt they can, since IMO the Jays will match any offer, or land Donovan in trade, then I’d prefer Koss to Schmitt at 2B.
I wouldn’t give up on Casey Schmitt just yet. He has 20+ homer potential over a full season.
Honestly 2b is the least important of the possible positions to spend on. Schmitt in his first that there was roughly league average while the rotation has pressing needs and right field needs an upgrade as well as possibly moving Ramos of you don’t think he can grow defensively and replacing him there. Also the back end of the bullpen is a hole since final and Rogers were moved, Rodriguez is out for the year and Walker may or may not return to form
2B is the only IF position that needs an upgrade. Posey has said he wants to build around pitching and defense, and 2B is an important position for defense. Schmitt had a -3 OAA there in 2025. A guy like Donovan can provide better defense (2 OAA) and, based on 2025, 18 more points of OPS+.
I think they’re going to let Matos get regular playing time in the OF in 2026. He had a 95 OPS+ this season at age 23. I think they need only one top SP. They can address that, 2B, and still have the resources for the pen and the 3rd OF position.
I’d rather see 2 SP and a better backup Catcher. In house options @ 2B or Donovan trade should carry them over until the new kid develops. Don’t waste time chasing Tucker. Use two of Gilbert, Encarnacion, Matos, or Luciano. Get quality starters !!!!
Good FA SPs are going to be expensive. Two seems like a stretch, unless they can trade for someone like Ryan or Lopez from the Twins. Barring a trade like that, I’d like to see them go with a FA pitcher like Suarez, plus Webb, Ray, and Roupp. Then fill the 5 spot with someone from the McDonald, Birdsong, Whisenhunt, Beck, and Teng group. I believe they can find a reliable #5 from that group. They need to see what these guys can do.
I’ve no problem staying in house for the OF. But the best upgrade they can make with the players available is 2B. They can improve both the team’s offense, and defense with a better 2B.
Last year I was sure there was enough young pitching, and thought the Verlander acquisition unnecessary. I learned the old saying true, never enough. They may need the whole amount of the 5 you listed just to fill the 5 slot for the season. Really hoping for 2 good starters. They should be able to swing one by FA and one via trade. The park does attract the arms, so take advantage. I’m onboard for Donovan, but there will be other teams who may match up better than SFG. Besides Bichette, a long shot, who else is an actual upgrade ?
the backup catcher position will hopefully be rodriguez who is a bat first catcher. When he was traded for posey mentioned that the guys they were targeting in the trades were guys that could slot into the big league club sooner rather than later and help now. I don’t think you are going to find a catcher on the market that is going to have better upside than they guy you already have
I think you’re right on that.
Available catching is bleak right now.
Hopefully our boy is ready !
Free agency this year will be tough, for the Giants and every team. There are no real superstars available, so everyone will be bidding against each other on risky players. A huge contract for Tucker, Cease, or Framber could turn ugly real quick.
I want the Giants to spend this off-season… but intelligently. Don’t give Kyle Tucker $400M. Don’t give Framber 7 years. Beyond that, hard to say exactly what they should do. Depends how the market shapes up.
If you made a team out of the best free agent at every position this year you’d have a darn good team.
Trade for Skubal sign him to 8 y 300 m
Got to think Boras is going to want to set a new free agent record and get Skubal more than the 324m Cole got 6 years ago.
Giants need quality SP & RP but don’t be suckered into overspending $$$/years on any of Boras’ clients. There are plenty of options without giving into Boras’ demands
Redwolves3:Not to mention Boras clients always getting 1 year player opt outs. FO’s need to stop with those type of contracts. And all the deferrals in contracts are a whole other issue. Don’t know yet what I think of deferrals.
mab51357, Opt-outs aren’t going away. The players like and want them. If a FO stops including opt-outs in deals they’ won’t be able to sign any top FAs.
Wheezer: As Johnson mentioned in this article. I don’t see them going anymore than 3-4 years on a FA pitcher. I think depending on how Ray looks early 2026 that they’ll probably add a couple years to keep him. He’s pretty happy as a Giant. Also hope they bring Tyler Rogers back.
Greene would be less expensive is younger and had more control. I would kick the tires with the reds and if they aren’t named bryce be open to discussions
Free agency and trades work best when used to supplement and augment a good drafting and development plan, not replace them.
Unfortunately that isn’t how it works with the Giants or a lot of other larger market teams. Considering you can’t tank and you get no compensation picks you are at a massive disadvantage when it comes to drafting. The Giants for multiple seasons have had near if not the least amount of draft picks in the league
My worry is the Giants biggest off season acquisition is Vitello. That’s not going to turn this team around.
Bieber would be a nice start. No QO attached. Merrill Kelly would be great too. On the trade front, Brendan Donovan makes a ton of sense. 2 years of arbitration left. By 2028 Kilen should be ready. And if Giants trade for Gray and Donovan plus all Gray’s salary the trade capital would be minimal. But Gray has to waive his No Trade.
How about trading Ray and a prospect for DeGrom?
I like Ray for one more year as a Giant.
I don’t have a problem trading for DeGrom if the price is right.
I’d hold on to Ray and see where the team is at the deadline.
Ray faded down the stretch. He still had a very nice year. I think if the Giants could trade Ray plus a prospect or two for DeGrom, it would give the Giants another ace plus save the Rangers 51mil over the next 2 seasons.
Ray fading down the stretch could have been from 2025 being his first full season back from TJS. As dominant as he was early last season, I’d hold on to him.
Got to hold onto him. So much else to do around him.
davemlaw: Can DeGrom be trusted healthwise? I do like Sonny Gray. I think he’s underrated. It’ll be an interesting off season.
That is the opposite of what is needed. Degrom is a health risk and Ray has been shown to be reliable. You are basically lessening your depth and innings
yep, a college coach with no MLB experience is the Giants big move this off season.
I like all those ideas except Merrill Kelly. He’ll be 37, and though he was having a nice season in AZ, didn’t do well in Texas, after the trade.
Substitute Zack Gallen.
There, all fixed.
Actually, my preference is neither. Gallen hasn’t been the same guy over the last 2-3 years that he was earlier in his career. I could be wrong though because he just turned 30.
Good enough for a #4 guy.
I could convinced on Gallen. Especially if Posey and Minasian like him.
This is just laughable. Giants ownership is a joke. This is not an ownership group commited to winning.
Quite the contrary,This is an ownership group that has fielded a team that has only finished with a winning record once since 2016
They had a chance to bring in a new president of baseball operations last year to fix this mess. They could have brought in an experienced executive from Cleveland, Tampa Bay or Milwaukee.
Instead they hired an ex MLB catcher. With no experience in running an organization.
Giants incompetent ownership also just signed off on this ex players recommendation to hire a college coach to lead this team next year.
In the NL West Giants have become irrelevant. So nobody cares. But I totally agree that hiring Posey was bad. They’re cooked
Padres fan calling another team irrelevant…
Talking to themselves and thumbs up to there multiple account madness.
Do the Padres still need a manager? I will agree that the Padres kicked our butt this year, but to say the Giants are irrelevant is incorrect. With all the talent the Padres have they didn’t really go very far at all.
lol ok
PadreJoe enters the fray. Ha ha. You are a new account machine ! You did avoid the 500 stat so props for that.
To summarize what I just read:
“While we definitely believe in numbers, our opinion of those numbers depends on the perspective we look at them. Therefore, we’ll be taking a closer look at the numbers to determine the best way to look at them. We take numbers seriously, as our fans expect us to do. We’re thankful for this opportunity to share this optimistic outlook with our fans.”
This is an interview! The last thing I want is to answer a lot of questions!

“We might do this or we might do the opposite of this”. Can’t wait for an AI to filter out the news that says nothing.
A I will be the worst mistake known to mankind. We are devolving as a species.
Uncertain times for sure. Tipping points everywhere you look.
The AI bubble and the crypto bubble will soon lay havoc to our economy. Fasten your chin straps and have your emergency parachute with you at all times.
What did you want Johnson to say? That they’re going to spend stupid money and go after certain specific guys? He’s the owner, not the PBO. His responsibility is financial issues. That’s what he addressed. What he said was it’s possible if needed they can exceed the tax threshold. And neither he nor Posey know which FAs they can land, or how much money that will take.
Posey won’t act hastily or impulsively to sign FA/trade. He will make calculated moves that best fit the Giants needs
Posey wants to win & do whatever it takes to make the Giants successful
He was real clear on that question, wasn’t he?
He has a future in politics.
As a Giants’ fan I’m encouraged. Johnson said the team should “be very cautious about” signing a pitcher to a nine-figure contract. Absolutely. Any GM/PBO/owner that isn’t cautious about a contract like that is a fool.
I like the fact that Johnson didn’t preclude the possibility of exceeding the tax threshold. That’s better than what some fans get with owners letting the fans know they want to absolutely avoid the tax, duck under, or reduce spending.
Not sure what fans expected him to say. John Middleton made the mistake years ago saying that the Phillies were going to spend stupid money. That backfired. And I liked the news that Posey appears to have financial flexibility in pursuing more big-ticket targets this winter.
JM I way better than A I, every day.
Thanks for being the voice of reason.
Yeah. Same. It’s been a fluid year when it comes to front office decisions.
I like what Johnson said about long term deals for players into their later 30’s.
With Chappy, Adames and Devers this team will be getting long in the tooth before you know it. Pitchers can age better than hitters so hoping SFG signs an arm to a long term deal.
Signing Ranger Suarez would solidify the rotation.
A reliever with high upside potential like Devon Williams would also be a smart move.
I am intrigued by Tatsuya Imai coming over form NPB. The Dodgers can’t sign ever Japanese pitcher, right ?
The Japanipulation of the Fodgers runs extremely deep my friend.
@oldgfan
Not all Japanese players go to the Dodgers.
Writers on this site seem to insist they do. Then posters just regurgitate it.
You’re right, just the high dollar ones.
Yeah, I love Ranger Suarez. Of the top pitching FAs He’s the one I hope Posey gets.
I like the idea of Devin Williams as well. I think he’d benefit a lot pitching at Oracle.
No agent listed on BR for Suarez ?
I think it’s Boras corp.
Yeah, it’s Boras.
Sucks, but if I’m SFG I still go after him and Valdez hard in hopes to land at least one LHSP. I do believe pitching is our best chance in FA, so go all in and get some.
That doesn’t bother me. I don’t get the hate for Boras, just because he’s able to maximize deals for his clients.
A number of Giants, both former and current. are Boras clients. Chapman, Lee, Snell, Rodon, and Manaea, are all Boras clients. Seems to me the Giants are able to deal with him.
He’s a formidable negotiator but any decision, whether to walk away or accept. is ultimately the players. If I was a player I’d probably hire Boras.
I just get impatient with his usual tactics to play the waiting game.
Nothing against him, just my impatience with the process.
Trades coming. Can’t buy everything they need.
Farhan still talking stats only ?
who?
I understand the point of view. He’s not saying he’s not going to spend; he’s saying he’s not going to channel Peter Seidler and hand out a bunch of 9-11 year deals.
A 3/54, a 4/80, a 5/125, and a 7/224 still comes out to $85M/yr AAV for 2026-2028.
That’s what it sounds like. The books are maxed out on the 5+ year deals. Need to try and keep them shorter for flexibility.
Boycott any Boras client if at all possible
“…yet pretty much any owner or front office executive would share Johnson’s concerns on overspending now on players who could soon be future albatrosses. This was, in fact, the very situation the Giants found themselves in during their previous taxpayor years, once some of the key players from their World Series teams started to decline.”
Could you cite specific examples?
After the Giants’ last championship in ’14, they took on 6 years of Johnny Cueto, 5 of Jeff Samardzija, extended Brandon Crawford, Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt. Posey, himself, while declining, was collecting increasing salaries each year until he retired.
They signed a 29 year-old ace in Cueto, got three solid years from Samardzija, and extended their core. I can’t criticize any of those moves outside of maybe overpaying their homegrown players, who they tended to overvalue.
Yeah, they were moves that made sense at the time. It was impossible to know those pitchers would basically be a wash. Ditto with Longoria and Melancon, whose contracts the Giants saddled themselves with shortly thereafter.
More recently, the Giants took a misstep with Soler and nearly did with Correa. Instead, that money was funneled into the Adames, Chapman, and Devers contracts, which will all be on the books for years to come. So as a Giants fan, I get the ownership’s wary sentiment.
Imagine the Giants without those three players, though? While Adames took most of the year to turn it around, he was still decent. Chapman has been an all star in San Fran, and as a Red Sox fan, I’ll never understand what the Sox did to Devers, but the Giants have a professional hitter for years to come.
Soler’s contract was at least not too long in years, and Correa was after years of handing out no long-term contracts. Clearly they need to get better at drafting again, but they also need to sign better talent, even if that means the latter half of contracts are sometimes sunk. That’s the nature of how MLB structures the arbitration years, essentially allowing teams to get the best years out of their players at the lowest cost.
I believe Farhan’s best move was offloading Soler’s contract less than a year into it. His worst move could have been signing Soler to start with. Lol
Giants’ fans seem lukewarm towards Kyle Tucker. I don’t understand that. I doubt they’ll be able to sign him because of the park, but he’ll be worth what he gets paid. He’ll only be 28 next season, and his baseball savant page is redder than Alabama. He would immediately become a major part of the core. And along with Devers, Adames, Chapman, Lee, and hopefully Eldridge and Matos, the Giants could become a top offense in MLB.
If Posey could land Tucker it would be epic.
I just can’t get my hopes up though.
Too much big bat drama in the past.
Agree. My point was that some fans are saying they don’t need, or want Tucker. I’m pessimistic that Posey can land him, but not wanting him makes no sense.
Suspect Buster does try to land at least one big FA. Would not surprise me if SFG was in early on Tucker, Bellinger, Bichette, Valdez, Suarez, or Imanaga.
Not to mention the top RH starters too.
My dream offseason would be signing Tucker, Ranger Suarez, Tyler Rogers, trading for Donovan, and either Ryan or Lopez from the Twins.
One side benefit to signing Tucker would be keeping him away from the Dodgers. The pen may need more than just Rogers, but there are other good candidates.
I think that team could expect at least a WC berth, and with luck, might challenge for the division. It’s definitely better on paper than SD or AZ.
Agreed.
What if it’s Bellinger, Valdez & HSK ?
I’m not crying with that haul either.
The good thing I’m finding is there are a few options, so chances are good they get something to improve.
Not sure Bellinger is suited to Oracle. IMO Yankee Stadium is the perfect park for him, which is a very different place from Oracle. I’m always skeptical of stats of how a guy hits in specific parks, because most are small samples, but Bellinger has played 48 games (43 starts) with a .723 OPS. That’s a far cry from his .912 OPS at Yankee Stadium.
HSK would be somewhat of a gamble with the major injury, and whether he’s fully back to where he was 2 seasons ago. But it’s probably one worth taking, if Donovan can’t be acquired. Donovan is a safer bet, but HSK won’t cost prospect capital.
I think Valdez is going to get a bigger contract than Suarez, but I wouldn’t be unhappy if it was him and not Suarez.
Don’t worry Bellinger won’t even be honestly thinking of coming to the giants. It will be a Yankees or the back to back champs Los Angeles Dodgers He might play them like Judge for the biggest contract he can get but it won’t be with the giants.
I just hope SFG realizes that the time is now to make the move into serious contention. The roster is close, but the window of prime Devers, Chapman, and Adames is not open for more than 3-4 years. It’s time to go big. I like the same trades, but hope they can pull off a big FA too.
Tucker or Bellinger
Bichette or Kim
Valdez or Suarez
At least one of those 6, and please no Sherzer. Two of those would be better, but may be unrealistic. I am prepared to be ok with Matos/Gilbert platoon in RF, if it means they opted for two TOR starters. Worked for LAD.
Agree with the first part. Again Bellinger is a no for me. The Giants aren’t going to get the Yankee Stadium version of Bellinger.
I doubt the Jays are going to let Bichette walk. And he probably wants to stay. They have a good shot at another WS appearance, and his best friend is there. For me it’s Donovan or Kim. I’d be more than happy with either Valdez or Suarez
I wonder what Tucker thinks about Oracle. Might be the biggest issue to signing him or not having a chance. There’s a lot of space for him to drive the ball to Triples Alley. And chicks like the triple. Lol
There’s probably stats out there but small sample size. Should be all about the money though with this being his best chance at a major contract. He’s gotta realize with him and a couple good starters SFG will be a playoff caliber team, if that floats his boat.
2010,2011,2012 The giants (San Francisco population 800,000) outspent the Los Angeles Dodgers (population 3,800,00) now the giants even have the whole Bay Area with the A’s moving to Sac/Las Vegas.
The Dodgers are now back to back champions and maybe more to come not counting that they have won the division title 12 of the last 13 years.
Why? Obviously Team ownership and putting in place a management together building a great team. The giants ownership and management need a wake up call to get off their duffs and start to figure it out.
The Giants have always had most of the Bay Area. There was a study done a few years ago based on the number of fans per area or zip code (I can’t remember which). There were 2 teams that did not have a majority of fans in any area; the A’s and White Sox. So even in Oakland, when the A’s were there, the Giants’ still had more fans than A’s.
That 800K population is only for SF County. The metro area includes Marin. the peninsula, and most of the East Bay. And the Giants have always had San Jose. LA is still much bigger but the SF metro area in in the range of 4.6M to 4.7M.
The Dodgers will not reign in the NLW in perpetuity. The Giants have already gotten off their duffs. Posey was aggressive re-signing Chapman, signing Adames, and acquiring Devers over the last season. That’s hardly sitting on their duffs. And expect Posey to be aggressive again this season.
