Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias held a video conference with reporters (including Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com) on Friday to discuss both the team’s decisions at the non-tender deadline and several other topics, most notably the major one-for-one swap earlier this week that sent Grayson Rodriguez to the Angels in exchange for Taylor Ward.
The trade represented something of a long-term goal for the front office, as Elias said Ward is “somebody that we’ve been chasing for at least for a couple years, just because of the profile, the big right-handed power.” Adding Ward brought more balance to a Baltimore lineup that was pretty heavy in left-handed bats, and finally making the move to obtain him now was related to both the Orioles’ needs and broader market conditions. “I wasn’t confident where else somebody like him would come from on the free agent and trade market right now that has the sort of bat that we think he has and what he did last year,” Elias said.
With this perceived scarcity in mind, the Orioles were ultimately willing to move Rodriguez, which counted as a surprise on many levels. Injuries have kept G-Rod off a big league mound since July 31, 2024, yet it wasn’t long ago that the former top prospect was viewed as a building block of the Orioles’ rotation. Rodriguez also isn’t slated for free agency until after the 2029 season, whereas Ward is controlled through just the 2026 season.
Elias cited Ward as a potential qualifying offer candidate heading into free agency, “so that could change that equation a little bit” in terms of “the mismatch in the amount of potential team control.” But in general, the O’s were ultimately willing to take the risk of moving Rodriguez in order to pry Ward away from Los Angeles.
“It’s uncomfortable to make trades, usually. It’s hard to line up, and you’re going to give something up,” Elias said. “That is always going to be difficult and interesting….Grayson’s a great kid. We loved bringing him up in this organization and rearing him, and he’s got a bright future. And sometimes, trades are a part of baseball.”
Losing Rodriguez deepens Baltimore’s need for starting pitching, which Elias reiterated as a chief goal of the club’s offseason. Kyle Bradish, Trevor Rogers, Dean Kremer, Tyler Wells, and Cade Povich now line up as the projected starting five, with Brandon Young and Chayce McDermott in the minors as the top depth options. It’s a group that needed more experience and clear top-of-the-rotation upside even when Rodriguez was still in the fold, and Elias said again that his team is looking at many pitchers, “whether it’s top or front or top half of the rotation, all those buckets. We’re trying, and there are guys out there and we are in pursuit of every one of them.”
With both the rotation and bullpen as needs, a reunion with swingman Albert Suarez could help on two fronts, and Elias said the Orioles were interested in a reunion even after non-tendering the right-hander yesterday. “I don’t want to go into details about our decision-making as we approach these tender decisions, but we very much are fans of Albert and we’re very much hoping to continue talking to him, and made that clear to him and his group,” the PBO said.
Suarez is another pitcher looking to rebound from a lost 2025 season, as he tossed only 11 2/3 innings for the Orioles last year. A right rotator cuff sidelined Suarez for most of the year, and he was also hit by a flexor tendon strain in his right forearm near the end of the season. The flexor strain was said to be minor enough that surgery didn’t seem necessary, and Suarez was expected to resume a throwing program after a recovery period.
MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz projected that Suarez would receive a $900K salary in his first trip through the arbitration process, as Suarez’s earning potential was obviously dampened by his lack of time on the mound in 2025. Despite that modest salary and the Orioles’ remaining years of control, the team still opted to part ways with Suarez. It could be that the O’s think they can bring Suarez back at an even lower price tag, or the club may have some misgivings about Suarez’s health situation.
While Elias mentioned the Orioles’ wide-ranging search for pitching, he didn’t directly allude to the possibility of pivoting and now trading a bat for rotation help. This seemed like a logical avenue for Baltimore to explore heading into the offseason, and the tactic perhaps makes even more sense in the wake of both the Ward trade and the fact that the O’s tendered a contract to Ryan Mountcastle. Between Mountcastle’s projected $7.8MM arbitration salary, his disappointing 2025 numbers, and a first base picture that also includes Samuel Basallo and Coby Mayo, there was plenty of speculation that the Orioles would just part ways with Mountcastle entirely.
Instead, the O’s kept Mountcastle because “we think he’s a great hitter,” Elias stated, noting that Mountcastle’s production was impacted by a hamstring strain that kept him on the injured list for over two months. Elias isn’t concerned over any potential roster surplus, as he again pointed to the many injury concerns that helped sink the Orioles’ 2025 season.
“As we lived through last year, you have to worry about depth, too. This is something that will sort itself out. I think the main thing is we don’t want to discard a good hitter if we don’t have to, and we want to keep our talent, and these guys are all really promising bats,” Elias said.
Another bat or two might yet join the mix, as Elias said “we are definitely still pursuing upgrades to the lineup. But I think that Taylor’s presence really solidifies the outfield picture in a way that gives us more flexibility with hunting that next impact bat and where that person plays.” In terms of specific positions, Elias said the team would like to have more center field depth, even with Colton Cowser and the newly-acquired Leody Taveras currently lined up up the middle.

hoping for the best with Ward. but it is good to hear that MElias doesn’t sound like they are done. there is a LOT of work yet to do. better to get concrete news this early than be waiting until Feb or worse, March to sign the few players still available at that time.
Get to work Mike… leave no stone unturned. I hear Julio Urias was reinstated in Aug… lol.
I don’t get that one statement from Elias.
“I wasn’t confident where else somebody like him would come from on the free agent and trade market right now that has the sort of bat that we think he has and what he did last year,”
Pete Alonso
Kazuma Okamoto
Eugenio Suárez
Jorge Polanco
Alex Bregman (maybe not quite as much power, but still decent)
There seem to be a number of power right handed bats available.
Maybe he should have said there aren’t many options for decent power hitters who require little money or commitment.
Or he wanted an OF, which none of the guys you listed are.
He wanted a righty power bat. They have enough outfielders as is, so they didn’t have an outfield hole that needed to be filled, although there was obviously room for improvement.
The power bat could have come from elsewhere, and wouldn’t have necessitated giving up a decent trade asset. All it would have cost is money.
Except we didn’t have enough OFs, unless you believe going into 2026 with O’Neill slated for an everyday spot in the lineup was a good idea, even after he missed most of 2025 with injuries and was bad when he was available. With the addition of Ward, NOW we have enough OFs- Ward in LF, Cowser in CF, Beavers/O’Neill platoon in RF, and Taveras as the backup CF/defensive replacement.
Meanwhile, the non-1B IF already has a full slate of set everyday guys (Holliday at 2B, Gunnar at SS, and Westburg at 3B) and we have Mountcastle, Mayo, and Basallo as options for 1B.
My bad, I missed Westburg when I was looking down the roster.
All good, he’s always been kind of an under the radar guy, even after he was drafted in the first round and mashed his way through the minors.
I should also add that I am not really a fan of the Ward trade. He’s a fine piece, and he might actually be the best RHH OF that changes teams this offseason, but giving up Grayson for him did not feel good at all.
For me, it’s the one year of control that’s a problem. If they sign him to an extension in the near future, it could turn out to be a worthwhile move still. He’s represented by Wasserman and they’ve done a number of extensions for their clients over the years.
It will feel fine if/when Grayson gets hurt again.
Reading between the lines: There’s always feels like there’s more to this story, and folks are trying not to throw anyone under the bus, or screw up a guys career by putting some unnecessary stuff out there in public. It’s sad and unfortunate but a lot of great talented pitchers never quite make it to free agency intact.
Ward has also been consistent
To be fair, Elias also hinted at a potential QO for Ward if this season goes well
It’s about the position too. There’s an incredible logjam on the INF and DH. Adding a 1B/DH means all of Adley, Basallo, Mountcastle, Mayo would be impacted. The only relatively open areas is OF. So he’s probably talking about looking for RH power in the OF.
What is a given is naturally implied.
Don’t disagree with the sentiment of what you are saying but:
1. How many of those guys would sign a 1 year deal
2. Orioles have zero space for an infielder and more space for an outfielder
Bringing Mounty back is fine but they need to make a trade for Mayo. They’re the same player at this point. Mounty is at his best when he’s not selling out for power and uses the whole field. If he would make a simple adjustment of not swinging at all breaking balls low and away he would be significantly better. I’d be fine if they got rid of both Mounty and Mayo if they brought in Pete Alonso. Don’t hate the idea of adding Cody Bellinger either.
It really is a shame the self inflicted log jam they have created with Mounty, Mayo, Kjerstad. So much promise between those 3 and almost nothing to show for it. This is a huge year for not only them but the entire team.
I will be absolutely livid if we keep Mountcastle and trade Mayo.
You’re likely to be livid later this offseason. Team still needs pitching. Mountcastle doesn’t pull much of that in trade. Mayo might.
It would be incredibly stupid when we have tons of money available to spend in free agency, but it’s obviously a real possibility, so I am half expecting it as well.
Pretty good chance considering their rotation has two decent starters and they have a million bats. They backed themselves into a tricky situation.
Unless Mayo is part of a trade that brings us a very good starter…which may be the plan. It looks like Elias wants to have a surplus of players in order to do whatever is necessary to get a top half of the rotation starter
We could simply keep Mayo and use the huge amount of payroll space we have available right now to use on upgrades to just sign a quality SP in free agency.
It’s simply risk mitigation. We could try to
overpay a number of SPs but they could have their mind set on a certain team or area. What if we sign one of the top SPs, Alonso, and then trade Mayo in a package for Peralta or Lopez? Would that suffice?
Mountcastle, Alonso, and Basallo cannot coexist on the same roster unless Basallo and Mountcastle are used in a platoon or Basallo is used as a pure backup C, and I cannot imagine Elias committed like $8 million to Mountcastle next year just to use him as a short side platoon 1B/DH or that he intends to use Basallo as a pure backup C, so there will be no Alonso signing (which I am completely fine with).
And no, I still would not be happy about trading Mayo for a SP when we are still around $65-70 million under our 2025 OD payroll and have tons of other good prospects available to trade for pitching, but no clear 1B of the future if Mayo is dealt.
He was hitting MLB pitching pretty well over the last month or so of the season, if you were paying attention.
Shown he can’t hit? He’s had 263 career ABs and that is your conclusion? He was on a tear at the end of the season by the way.
400 mlb doesn’t prove a prospect can’t hit. There are literally thousands of examples and it’s much more common that rookie mlb take a few seasons to hit their stride
Exactly.
Perhaps trade Mountcastle, but Mayo has years of control and is a very promising player. You don’t just bring Mounty back and trade Mayo, as you say.
Mountcastle and Kjerstad for George Kirby
Mariners think we’re smoking crack rock and hang up the phone
Negative or zero trade value on both
Mountcastle is more likely the one who gets traded.
I’m with you on trading Mayo. Just so happens the Brewers have possible long term holes at 1B and 3B. They also happen a TOR starter available in Freddy Peralta. Sign one of Framber, Ranger, or King. I wouldn’t stop there I’d try to land Sonny Gray in a salary dump too.
Now let’s not be greedy. There is enough good pitching to go around.
Mayo reminds me a lot Austin Riley—who also struggled to get his footing through his age-22 season…
“The trade represented something of a long-term goal for the front office, as Elias said
So they acquired a guy with 1 yr left before free agency
It was along term goal in trying to acquire Ward… Got it?
The point, as I read it, was why now when his term is almost expired and what you paid for him quite possibly would have gotten him for you earlier.
This smells of obsession, not good baseball sense.
Along with jettisoning a frustrating talent who never was healthy in recent years.
We sold low on Grayson and bought high on Ward.
It’s hard to be happy with a move like that.
KF – Grayson could go lower. If he gets into game action and his velocity has dipped, again, or his stuff has been diminished by his shoulder, his stock would fall even lower. At least, at this juncture, he has the dream of upside intact and can land some sort of return. That may not be the case six months down the road if his return to the mound is suboptimal or delayed.
My point being his value can still go lower. Substantially so. Yes we bought high on Ward. And we sold Grayson below peak value – but not low, per se. Lower than mid-2024, sure. But he’s got a long way to go to be at a real low value point.
When he was the #1 pitching prospect in baseball he had insane value. We’ve held guys to zero like Kjerstad. So yes, this isn’t absolute zero but we sold near the bottom.
20-20 hindsight. Guys get hurt, or in the case of Kjerstad, get balls thrown at their head and get serial concussions, apparent brain damage.
You can’t trade the ones who will get hurt.
Trying to go back to the subpar years when all the Orioles wanted was home run hitters. Trumbo, Cruz, Davis, etc. Heaven forbid they trade for or sign a few pitchers.
Angels won that deal.
not if GRod is broken. no physical?!?! who signs papers for a trade w/o a physical?
What were they going to do with Ward for another year? Honestly. It’s salary relief and a lottery ticket for a doomed franchise.
Angels are not doomed
Angels are doomed because of Arte and the FO but if they keep making (supposedly) good trades like this one then they will get better
you can absolutely ask for a physical. just because it’s not required doesn’t mean it’s not wise. but what am I saying, it’s the Angels. wise is not part of their M.O.
Physicals aren’t required via trades…the teams are only allowed to look at the medical records. Physicals are for signings.
Also, if this is such a big concern of yours, why not questions the O’s about Ward’s Physical? Again, teams dont get Physicals for trades.
Arte Moreno, thats who.
Part of the trade was “as is” condition. Very few right handed hitters worth having in free agency this year. The initial move was solid. It’ll look horrible later if Elias fails to acquire the premium pitchers he needs while Rodriguez finally is available to pitch for his money. I have more faith in Elias achieving his goal than G Rod making the trade look bad for the Os
@macgromit. Probably looked at his medicals in September or October. I’m guessing he had a followup. Angels just looked at Baltimore’s.
“ who signs papers for a trade w/o a physical?”
Every team in baseball all the time. They exchange medical records on the players. Free agents get physicals not traded players.
Like what was said before. Physicals are not required for a trade to be consummated.
A team trying to shed payroll and not caring what it gets back in return
They saw the scans
Physicals are for free agent deals.
@cookmeister2. Check the interview on foul territory at 15:50. I think Frazier has been traded several times, and a free agent before he asked. Either way he had surgery in August and probably got checked recently. Im assuming that’s why he said it’s cleared and good to go.
And Frazier was wrong or misspoke apparently.
Why didn’t they just keep Ward and give him a contract. He’s been one of their best hitters for several years now. Yes, they need pitching but they’ve got the money to sign arms especially with the Rendon contract finally coming off the books next year.
We have enough of “Ward” types. Its easier to find a a OF than it is to get young controllable SP. with great stuff.
Good pitchers are a premium. He’s worth the risk. Besides Ward will be a FA after 2026 and The Angels can bring him back
Hopefully Maddux can get Dietmers to pitch as good in the rotation as he did as a reliever. He’s got great stuff.
A legitimate power hitter for a question mark.
He was a legitimate power hitter for a year (2025)…check out his stats the previous years, pay attention to his walk rate and strikeout rate. Also, he’s a trash defender. Solo HRs dont make up for the other stats.
That’s how I see it. Crazy that a team with zero positional depth would make these kinds of trades. When the injuries start piling up midseason, like they do every year, half their lineup is gonna be AAAA journeyman-types. You can’t make the postseason with a top-heavy roster and the folks in Anaheim just cannot seem to figure that out.
I think anyone getting a QO during the ‘26 ‘27 off season will accept, given it’s probably a lockout year. But I could see a 2yr extension for Ward
hope you’re right that Ward gets a 2 yr extension… that means he doesn’t have a Tyler O’Neill 2025 and was actually helpful to Baltimore in 2026.
Why will they take the QO for a season that they won’t get paid? Just to clear it so they can’t get another?
What’s his point about that QO? Is he hoping to offer Ward a QO and have him decline it to net a draft pick?
No I think he’s expecting Ward to accept what will probably be $23M at his age and then go get one more deal after the 2027 CBA.
And that all assumes he will play well enough to be worth the offer in the first place.
That whole trade feels like a vote of non-confidence in Grayson’s health going forward and a smart (in that context) decision to gain the best possible return.
This is one I think Elias got backwards.
As Angels fan. I hope the Rodriguez/Ward Trade works out for both teams. Having Rodriguez and moving Dietmers back into the rotation is a good start. We will have 3 solid starters.
Hopefully round it out with 2 decent ones and resign Kenley Jansen
They have 4 starting pitchers with Kikuchi and Soriano, plus Detmers and Rodriguez.
I forgot about Kikuchi
With so many teams looking for pitching I can’t help but think the O’s lost this trade.
Just a few trade ideas to consider:
Luis Robert Jr and cash for Rodriguez.
Brent Rooker, O’s include Mountcastle and ?
Byron Buxton(if he’s willing to waive his NT), O’s include Mountcastle and ?
The list goes on. Doesn’t sound like O’s shopped Rod around, to their detriment.
I think it was more about the Orioles wanting Ward and what they were willing to give up, than specifically just about Rodriguez. At least, that’s what it sounds like.
I’m sure they shopped him around, it’s just that his value is way down right now after missing so much time with various injuries, which I would argue made keeping him and hoping for some type of bounceback in 2026 the most obvious way to go.
I clearly don’t have access to his medical info though, so maybe there was something there that suggested taking whatever we could get for him now would be wise and the Angels were simply willing to look past that and roll the dice on his previous upside.
I personally never heard his name mentioned anywhere.
Elias runs a very tight ship and his moves almost never get “spoiled” before they actually happen.
In a vacuum, yes. But we’ve yet to see what the O’s will do to follow up. White Sox, Twins, and A’s will want young, controllable players for those players, not Mountcastle and prospects.
You’re actually writing that you don’t think the O’s shopped Rodriguez around? Really?
The flaw in those scenarios is that those teams will not accept Mountcastle in the return as they won’t want to pay him $8 million for next season
Love when fans think they can get high quality pieces for their own crap they don’t want. Twins, White Sox and As would not even return a phone with such nonsensical garbage.
I don’t think keeping mounty around while you have Mayo is the right play. Mayo definitely needs full time opportunities to play. And trading him but keeping mounty would be a bad move unless you are also bringing in another first base bat. I don’t think Mounty is a guy who should be starting for us in my opinion.
As a Blue Jays fan I was really hoping the O’s would non-tender Mountcastle because he absolutely kills the Jays everytime he plays them haha.
Ward only has 88 total plate appearances against the Jays but his .936 in Toronto suggests the O’s got another assassin for that battle
With Ward in the fold Elias can focus on pitching. Sign them all, Valdez, Cease, and Gallen. Also bring back Suarez and Eflin. Infield is set but i do like Urias as utility depth. Also will need a legit CF but can probably get away with Colser and Tavarez until the trade deadline. That will do it.
I’m guessing you were being tongue in cheek here, but we already have 3 solid guys set in stone for the rotation and several decent depth options behind them, plus a couple of promising young arms nearing MLB readiness, so there’s absolutely no way we’re signing 4 more SPs and a swingman.
Even signing 2 of the guys you listed is probably a longshot.
Yea, I just want to have a real rotation, one that competes every game. I dont really even like Cease or Valdez for what they will cost
Baltimore has been burned by these injury-accruing pitching prospects many times from over. From DL Hall, Hunter Harvey, Dylan Bundy. I think they wanted to cash out now, sensing that Rodriguez would betray them yet again.
Wonder if Baltimore would be interested in sonny gray and jojo remero. I mean if gray would waive his ntc. Maybe gray, 20 mil, romero for mayo and something else? Could benefit both teams.
Maybe $25M/Gray and Romero for something. Mayo at 23 should be a keeper for the O’s.
Not for nothing, It’s “GrayRod”, not G-Rod
He actually has said he prefers G-Rod
Only time will tell whether it was a bigger mistake to trade for power hitting (.439 career SLG!), right handed left fielder Taylor Ward, or to sign power hitting (.463 career SLG), right handed left fielder Tyler O’Neill to be the highest paid Oriole. For Elias’ sake, he’ll have to hope the answer is Ward, because they’ll still be paying O’Neill in 2027 and Ward will be gone. If the Orioles are lucky, Elias will be gone with him.
I guess anyone can win Executive of the Year now a days
The Orioles watched Spencer Torkelson practically getting squeezed off of the Tigers roster last winter and then watched him respond with a career year this past season. They are probably hoping for similar results from Mountcastle; looking over his shoulder and having to produce
Honestly, I like this trade. O’s get a few years of elite power guy and the park should unlock some more power. I’d expect he starts to hit a few more HRs than in Anaheim.
1 year
@Canuckleball
Darn it, I keep misreading the BR page. Yes, in 2027 he’s a FA. Thank you for correcting me.
no worries, happens to the best of us.
A few months.
@Baltimore_44
Is he getting traded soon?
He’ll be an Oriole for possibly 11 months. Less if this goes bad. You should’ve read though.
Completely disagree with your baseless comment that he’ll hit more HR’s here. His expected home runs had he played in Camden Yards are consistently lower than his actual.
baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/taylor-ward-6…
@Baltimore_44
If you look at the chart, he’s expected HRs at all the ballparks is lower than actual, except for the A’s minor league park.
The more I look at this trade the more I like it for Baltimore. They need a bat like this and they won’t miss who they gave up to bad. Gonna help them out quite a bit and won’t break the bank.
It was not worth giving up Rodriguez for. Sure, he’s a major health risk but he’s 26, has four more years of control and ace type upside. Not a good trade for the O’s.
I’d go after some of the Pirates pitchers with Mayo and Kjerstad/Cowser
Finally a sensible trade comment. A perfect matchup of teams. Skenes obviously off the table but any other pitcher likely an option.
Kjerstad and Cowser have wildly different trade values. Pretty much the whole Orioles offensive team talent took major setbacks in trade value.
The added harm for having a bad season in W-L.
Not sure on anyone’s value. I don’t have that trade simulator thing. What would a deal look like? I assume Bubba is off the table for the Pirates. So Keller, Herrington, Oviedo, Barco, etc.
I’d add KC and Cinncy to the list too – they have SP depth and need hitters.
Not many teams get a Top 30 pick for a QO. It’s a short list and most of those have no QOs in the roster.
