Padres Re-Sign Kyle Hart

By Nick Deeds | November 17, 2025 at 12:43pm CDT

The Padres announced they’ve re-signed Kyle Hart to a one-year deal with a club option for the 2027 season. The Nello Gamberdino client is reportedly guaranteed $1.2MM. He’ll be paid $1MM in 2026 and is guaranteed a $200K buyout on the $2.5MM option. The option price would climb by $250K apiece if Hart reaches 16 and 20 starts next season; it’d jump another $500K at 24, 28 and 32 starts. The buyout price would climb by $100K each at 50, 55 and 60 appearances.

Hart, 33 next week, posted a 5.86 ERA in 43 innings of work for the Padres this past year while splitting time between the rotation and bullpen. The lefty inked a $1.5MM guarantee with San Diego back in February that came with a $5MM club option for the 2026 season that Padres opted to decline earlier this month. That wasn’t necessarily a shock given his lackluster performance; even during his time at Triple-A El Paso, Hart posted a middling 4.10 ERA in 63 2/3 innings of work with a strikeout rate of just 18.5%. 2025 marked his first work in the majors since his 2020 big league debut with the Red Sox, which lasted all of 11 innings.

During the interim, Hart had bounced between various minor league affiliates before heading overseas to pitch for the KBO’s NC Dinos. He made 26 starts for the Dinos in 2024 and pitched exceptionally, with a 2.69 ERA and a 28.8% strikeout rate across 157 innings of work. It was a strong enough season that Hart looked to return to the big leagues and see what he could do at the highest level, but things didn’t work out quite so well last year. Hart is hardly the first player to dominate overseas but struggle to replicate his production stateside, as even 2023 KBO MVP Erick Fedde struggled in the big leagues this past year after enjoying a strong return season with the White Sox and Cardinals in 2024.

Regardless of Hart’s struggles last year, however, it’s understandable that San Diego decided to re-up with the lefty for 2026. The Padres are a team in desperate need of volume when it comes to rotation-capable arms. Dylan Cease and Michael King have both departed the organization for free agency and, while Joe Musgrove is expected back next year from injury, it’s already known that Yu Darvish won’t pitch next year. Musgrove and Nick Pivetta are both quality veterans, but Randy Vasquez, JP Sears, and Matt Waldron are all questionable as quality regulars in a contending rotation. That’s true of Hart as well, of course, but having additional depth behind that group figures to be valuable in order to avoid a situation like the one San Diego faced in 2021 when a lack of pitching depth forced them to turn to displaced veterans like Jake Arrieta and Vince Velasquez as they narrowly missed the playoffs due to a late September collapse.

Signing Hart helps fill out the depth on a budget, but it won’t do much to solve the problem of San Diego needing additional impact in the rotation. The Padres have operated with some financial uncertainty in the years since Peter Seidler’s death, and the recent announcement that ownership intends to explore a sale of the franchise further clouds the club’s financial picture in the short-term. That’s not to say making a splash in free agency and adding a mid-rotation or better arm to the mix is completely out of the question; they did manage to find room in the budget to add Pivetta just last year, after all. That could lead to a creative solution like trying Mason Miller or Adrian Morejon in the rotation as the team’s best option if they hope to add an impact starter with a pursuit of someone at the top of the market like Cease or Framber Valdez seemingly unlikely.

Robert Murray of FanSided first reported the guarantee, option price/buyout, and maximum value of the escalators. The Associated Press had the specific escalator breakdown. Image courtesy of Patrick Gorski, Imagn Images.

Probably or not much more / incentives, buyout $$.

Depth is at a low point for filling innings during season (more so if an injury) so, might as well give him another low dollar shot as anyone else.

After an abysmal start last season on the big league club he was sent to AAA where he greatly improved over the summer months and velo on FB went up 3-4 mph. He’s not a big gamble at ~ $1M

Brew, I wish that was the case. In 13 relief appearances in the 2nd half Hart’s ERA was 5.93. The difference in velocity between his 6 starts and his 13 relief appearances was not because he greatly improved his velo, it was because he was in relief and didn’t have to hold anything back when only going 1-2 innings. Even at that it was about a half MPH on his sinker and 4-seam.

His velocity has gone up 3-4 MPH since he was in the majors in 2020.

I was talking about his role as a RP, in which his velo and K rate did indeed go up significantly. I seriously doubt that AJ sees him as a viable SP going forward. LH RP sometimes long relief, maybe a spot start call up out of AAA.

Aloha Gwynning, I forgot about May! You folks have a very good park for pitchers and May could be a good risk taking a flyer on. A lot of good talent on your team. BTW did you see that crazy rumor/trade by our 2 teams sending Tatis Jr to Wrigley and I think Horton/Shaw or something like that back to Petco. I couldn’t believe it, just had to laugh. Even if the team is eventually sold, Tatis is going no where. Mahalo!

We started going in late 90’s when it was fledgling and it’s been 10 -15 years since we have been and now it’s a lot more.

We liked Wilson Creek from the early years and also Palumbo and even Bailey (recently read they closed the restaurant). There was a little one (back then) on the right going out that made port that I can’t remember.

The last time we went Europa had just started and it was good. Would like to go back and see what they have created.

      Why? He’s inexpensive depth.

The Pads need arms however they can get ’em. Preller can’t afford to pass on a cheap flyer who already has a good relationship with the organization.

Hart has options so all a major league deal means is he is on the 40-man roster, not that he is guaranteed a spot on the active roster once the season begins. He is cheap depth and nothing more.

This is one of the biggest aspects of this deal that is being overlooked. He has one option remaining and is likely going to be in El Paso for most of the year and just coming up for spot starts or to cover bulk innings when there are injuries.

The way its been reported on makes people assume its a guaranteed 26 man roster spot, but we will probably see him for a similar number of innings this year as we did last year (~40)

I posted before the dollars came out and thought he had exhausted his options. Good call on that. As depth he is inexpensive. If you had to carry him on the major league roster or DFA him it didn’t look good fit the Padres making the kind of signings they will need to contend.

Nick Deeds, we know you try to inject your opinion into these articles, but it always ends up with you looking bad you when you do.

A 4.10 ERA in the PCL and in El Paso is anything but middling. PCL league average was a 5.83 ERA. The Chihuahua’s team average was a 5.68 ERA. Among the 43 pitchers with at least 10 starts Hart ranked 8th best in the PCL. Among the 54 pitchers with at least 60 IP, Hart was 9th in ERA. Any way you slice it, his ERA was not middling in El Paso.

You blew it. Again. Please just report the facts.

Just how bad were Arrieta and Velasquez as Padres; both went 0-3 in 4 starts, both barely managed over 12 innings, and both had ERA’s over 8.30 with Arrieta topping over 10.00. Better to get your depth pieces now than have to scrape for them later

A sign of things to come for Padre fans. The coping is going to make for awesome reading. It’s a good start right here.

Preller is just getting “warmed up.

He and pitching coach Ruben Neila must see some value in Kyle Hart and must see some things they can fix, adjustments they can make to help transform him into an effective MLB starter and/or reliever OR they would have just non tendered him.

Still waiting for a few “mystery pitchers” from “mystery teams”
to be landed by the Padres that catches MLB and the prognisticators by surprise.

I’m thinking the value is that he is a known warm body that will accept $1m.

With zero upside? Kinda cruel to say that about Hart. But then you’re a crack talent evaluator so we should all listen

lol at cruel. This is coming from a guy who is a cyber bully gang leader. My goodness. Was it the “warm body” that upset you ? You are such a little girl.

He had 12months to show upside and was a bust. Hence a contract 180k above the minimum. So no. Precious little upside, if any.

          Are you ok ?

Hart is a cheap solution for depth as long as he has options. Just yo-yo him to AAA when you need an extra reliever or spot starter. As long as you are not expecting him to be much better than a 5 ERA then he fits the bill.
