Pirates Interested In Kyle Schwarber, Showed Interest In Josh Naylor

By Mark Polishuk | November 18, 2025 at 10:19am CDT

Pirates GM Ben Cherington said last week that he had “more [financial] flexibility than we’ve had in other offseasons I’ve been in Pittsburgh,” and subsequent reports indicated that Bucs ownership could approach the $40MM mark with their spending plans this winter.  This willingness to spend has translated to some early interest in two of the best hitters on the free agent market, as ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Pirates have interest in Kyle Schwarber, and also had interest in Josh Naylor before Naylor re-signed with the Mariners.

The exact nature of the Bucs’ talks with Naylor weren’t specified, yet Passan indicated that the Pirates were prepared to offer Naylor more than $78MM.  This would’ve been, by a wide margin, the priciest free agent deal in Pirates history.  Francisco Liriano’s three-year, $39MM deal from December 2014 remains the biggest guarantee the perennially low-spending Buccos have ever given to a free agent.

Naylor re-upped with the Mariners for five years and $92.5MM.  Beyond just the money, there was plenty of mutual interest between Naylor and the M’s in continuing their relationship, as evidenced by the fact that Naylor agreed to a new deal so soon after the free agent market opened.  Seattle looks well-positioned to keep contending throughout Naylor’s tenure, so it likely would’ve taken a drastic overpay from the Pirates to convince him to leave the Mariners for a Pittsburgh club that has struggled through seven straight losing seasons.

Along these same lines, Schwarber is expected to receive plenty of offers from big-market contenders, including his former team in Philadelphia.  MLB Trade Rumors projects Schwarber to receive a five-year, $135MM contract, even though he is entering his age-33 season and is essentially a DH-only player at this point in his career.  Schwarber’s huge power, consistent production, and reputation as a clubhouse leader will very likely outweigh concerns about his age, and the Phillies (like the Mariners with Naylor) are prioritizing bringing Schwarber back into the fold.

This being said, the fact that Schwarber and Naylor are even being mentioned in connection to the Pirates is eye-opening, and perhaps indicative of how uncharacteristically aggressive Pittsburgh may be in trying to upgrade its lineup.  While the Pirates have been rebuilding for the bulk of Cherington’s tenure, his last couple of offseasons have seen the GM spread out his limited spending capacity over multiple players, with the idea of addressing several needs rather than making one single big strike.  The tactic makes sense on paper, but it hasn’t really worked in practice, as the Bucs have remained under the .500 mark.

With this in mind, Pittsburgh might now be more open to adding one clear-cut star bat to its lineup, even if it means going outside the team’s usual financial comfort zone.  The very top of the free agent hitting market (i.e. Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette) is likely still out of the question for the Pirates.  But, if Schwarber and Naylor are on the radar, players like Cody Bellinger, Pete Alonso, Eugenio Suarez, Kazuma Okamoto, and any number of other available bats could now conceivably be within Pittsburgh’s spending range.

Bucs fans can be forgiven for taking a “we’ll believe it when we see it” stance on the Pirates’ pursuit of major free agents.  That said, Paul Skenes’ immediate impact as arguably baseball’s best pitcher has created more pressure on the team to return to contention while Skenes is still under team control.  Skenes and the Pirates’ collection of promising young arms was let down by a dismal offense in 2025, so adding hitting is the obvious top priority on the team’s offseason checklist.

The common theory going into the winter was that Pittsburgh was again going to trade from its stockpile of hurlers to obtain some much-needed hitting help.  Cherington had already flatly shot down any possibility of Skenes being dealt, but conceivably any of the less-experienced arms could be dealt for an equally promising young bat.  As for the Buccos’ more seasoned pitchers, the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon reported today that Johan Oviedo is drawing trade interest, and Mitch Keller has been mentioned in trade rumors for months.

Keller is also the Pirates’ second-highest paid player, so dealing the right-hander would free up more payroll room for further moves.  This could mean more exploration at the higher end of the free agent market, or the Pirates could conceivably take on some salary in a trade for a more expensive hitter.  Trading Keller for a similarly-priced hitter would be the smoothest way to accomplish this goal, though such an easy match isn’t obvious on the trade front.

The fact that the Pirates were looking at Naylor doesn’t necessarily mean that the team isn’t satisfied with incumbent first baseman Spencer Horwitz, as Horwitz could be moved to DH in the event that another first baseman was added.  It also could mean that Pittsburgh was more broadly looking at any available top bat, and figuring out the positional fit can come after the fact.

One position that probably won’t receive much attention is shortstop, as top prospect Konnor Griffin is expected to be in the majors at some point in 2026.  This could even be as early as Opening Day, as Passan writes that “the Pirates are strongly considering giving [Griffin]…the opportunity to win their big league shortstop job” in Spring Training.  It would be a bold promotion for a 19-year-old who has only one year of pro ball under his belt, and Griffin’s resume consists of 21 Double-A games and zero Triple-A games.

Nevertheless, Griffin is viewed as perhaps the best prospect in baseball, and he looked so impressive in 2025 that he already appears to be on the verge of his MLB debut.  Putting Griffin on the Opening Day roster and keeping him in the majors throughout 2026 could eventually earn the Pirates a bonus draft pick via the Prospect Promotion Incentive program, should Griffin win Rookie of the Year honors, or if he has a top-three finish in NL MVP voting during his pre-arbitration years.

And they were smart about paring him up with Russell Martin, who was a great pitch framer. As we move towards ABS, it’s going to put more pressure on pitchers to be accurate and able to hit their spots instead of relying upon framing.

Rays actually signed a homegrown superstar player that happened to not to be able to count to 18.

“Wander Franco’s contract with the Tampa Bay Rays is an 11-year deal for a guaranteed $182 million, which could increase to a total of $223 million with a club option and incentives.”

It didn’t work out for them for off the field reasons and they haven’t tried again.

I think an argument could be made that the Dodgers’ approach to roster building does more to threaten the long-term health of MLB than the Pirates.

it’s not the Pirates who are ruining baseball, it’s the large market franchises that are forking out multi million dollar contracts to most of their roster making it very difficult for small market teams to be financially competitive

And don’t forget the agents who ramp to the price. Idiotic to say the pirates are ruining baseball. The only thing they are ruining is the pirates franchise and the fan base.
It would be something to see the pirates get a big name hitter. And sure let the kid be the opening day shortstop. Times is slowly running out.

Agents get a percentage of the contract of the player. So the more the player makes the more the agent makes.

It reminds me of when the Nationals signed Jayson Werth, they over payed at the time but the deal brought some legitimacy to the franchise. I could see the Pirates over spending on a second tier bat but I doubt they will overspend to compensate for the fact they’re not a legitimate contender currently. My money would be on Suarez on a 5yr deal with opt outs with them gambling his numbers in Seattle are a fluke, and possibly a trade for someone like Duran.

Adding Suarez and Duran would help them tremendously though. The division is weak. The Cardinals are essentially rebuilding, the Reds are an incomplete team, the Cubs won’t spend to their capabilities…Milwaukee alone seems to be a complete team and even they are greatly limited financially.

I’d rather see them offer Skenes a ten year $300 million extension. It would cover 2030 to 2039.

      Also extend Konnor Griffen now.

Signing an aging Schwarber or Alonso is only justified if it gets you to the postseason.

I could see ten years and $450 to $500 million if he was a free agent, but he is not a free agent until 2030. He throws hard so the risk of injury is more than zero.

By 2030 he will probably get a billion dollar contract the way contracts been inflating. That’s why Boston figured extend Anthony now or it just gets more expensive later. Pittsburgh should trade him, they can’t keep him and his prospect haul would be significantly better than the White Sox got for Crochet.

Skenes extension would be 2 years. Guy likes to win and that can’t happen as much in Pittsburgh as it could elsewhere. 300m isn’t getting you 10 years of Skenes. He can just wait 4 years and get easily over 400. Pittsburgh doesn’t have the population income corporations and stadium capacity to spend 300m on a pitcher. Give that $ to KG.

Pirates will just be driving another team’s cost up by biddng on the top free agents. Pittsburgh is a terrific city, but given the Pirates competitiveness over the last decade (one season above .500, no playoff appearances), what top level free agent is going to want to sign there?

Plenty would love him for 3 years.

That’s the difference, and why i predict this deal gets done

-plus PNC Park RF is a perfect fit for him assuming he doesn’t want to be stuck at DH permanently

Buc’s to go after top end FA like Josh and Kyle S is the Wrong plan. With their good young pitching, they need resonable offensive players that can produce. Have consistent production 1-9. They need 2-3 more players that can produce mid ave/15-17hr/70+rbi’s and decent D. Then add 2-3 experienced BP arms-shorten the game; from the starter to the BP.

Best rendering I’ve read. Instead of going after solid young position players, they’re going to shoot for the moon with a guy like Schwarber, who likely enjoys playing on contending teams to begin with. It makes little sense either for him or the Pirates
As stated previously, you can’t tell me that there aren’t good, young players who if given the right money, would want to play behind Skenes, Keller, Bubba and company. And at the nicest ballpark in MLB. Turning around this franchise wouldn’t be that hard to do with such signings of 2-3 bats, but it has to start with a profit obsessed owner
Signing Schwarber alone or with the usual scrap would not be enough anyway

If you trade for them it doesn’t matter if they want to play behind Skenes Bubba or not. They have no say in the matter unless they have a contract with no trade clause which only the very best players have and are usually not old players. Unless they are trading for Witt Julio or something that player will be forced to come to Pittsburgh even if they hate to.

          Apples and oranges
Point is, on one hand you have an owner with plenty on money who can afford a guy like Schwarber. Or Bellinger. Or Suarez
          Or two of the three.
We agree that money makes PNC Park sound even more beautiful. I was referring to the nonsense that some spout which says “players don’t want to come here”
On the other hand, you have plenty of trade capital here as the Pirates are deep with pitchers
There’s no reason that this team can’t be greatly upgraded. And yet, with Nutting holding the purse strings, I expect them to go bargain basement again
          This talk is just that

Players don’t want to come here. You can bribe them by paying them the most $. They aren’t going to take a discount. Even if $ was equal you would go to a team more likely to win and every year.

I’m telling you most players are going to go wherever they make the most $. If that’s Pittsburgh they would love to go there. Now if the $ is the same or not significantly more they will go to wherever the chances of winning are higher. Skenes Etc are nothing compared to what a 300m payroll can do. And how long are Skenes etc going to be there? And if I sign here that means Skenes or Bubba won’t be signed because I am taking their $. 100 120 only buys you so much vs 300. Then you got location preference. Some guys are east coast some west coast. Places with lower taxes. Places with nicer weather. Most importantly places with better sponsorships. Greater the cities population greater the sponsorship. If things are the same Bednar would choose Pittsburgh or would had. Playing in playoffs means playoff $. Pittsburgh hasn’t won a series in 40 some years. Lil Ole me your 1 free agent is going to turn it around?

To sum it up. Players go wherever they can make the most $. Nothing beats that. Pham will love to come back because Pittsburgh is so desperate he will get the most $ here. Schwarber will get more somewhere else.

          So we are in agreement.

You’ve written a missive to repeat a great deal of what I have put forth, right down to the idea that one signing isn’t going to right the ship
One point of disagreement however. There are only so many teams. Only so many glamour locales.
Most players * come from* warm weather homes. There are few Bednars and Walkers, who grew up and played locally, and fewer McCutchen’s, who wish to make a home here. But someone has to play in Pittsburgh. Cleveland. Milwaukee. Sacramento. And others.
Being a professional means accepting this
Moreover, few teams have room for superstar depth in positions.
My overall point remains, if Nutting had some paradigm shift and decided to compete for better free agents—not the Soto’s of the world per se, but better—-they’d come.
But this rumor about Schwarber is simply window dressing for rubes who still believe in this carpetbagger of an owner
Me, I’m resigned to more pierogi races and bring your hamster to the ballpark nights.

The pressure is on the owner big time this offseason.

We see the fans with all the Sell The Team stuff , but also with having Skenes, the owner is surely facing pressure from other owners and mlb board members who know the value Skenes on a decent team would bring to the league

The Pirates (among a few others) are the reason that MLB welfare should not exist. They can make money without spending or really caring about winning or entertaining fans.
The Pirates have a great history, a great stadium, and a great fan base that really wants a winner. I like when they are competitive. I wish they would spend some money, they could fill that stadium easily with a team that competes.
Looking at my profile pick you can see that I have no love for teams like LAD or NYY. But I don’t think those teams should pay for other teams to exist. Sure they are in bigger markets, but that doesn’t mean they should supplement the rest of the league. That where you get the current A’s and Pirates ownership that love that MLB welfare above all.
All that said, I hope the Bucs spend some money and put out a team that makes Pitt want to come to the stadium.

They need two hitters, realistically, to allow their pitching to win them games.

      Ideal FA Targets:
      Kyle Schwarber (unlikely)
      Geno Suarez
      Jorge Polanco

      Trade Targets:
      Wilyer Abreu
      Jarren Duran
      Ryan Mountcastle
      Adolis Garcia
      Yandy Diaz
      Brandon Lowe

They need some combination of these lists to jumpstart the offense and show good faith to Skenes.

Mountcastle/Diaz/Garcia, especially Garcia, hard pass. RH power that isn’t legit, like Alonso, doesn’t do well in PNC. And Garcia can’t get on base. The Bucs already have guys that can’t get on base.

Polanco would be a good get, Abreu would cost too much, Brandon Lowe would have been a good get 3 years ago.

This honestly might be a good PR move not for what it says to fans but what it says to other free agents who may be leery to go to Pittsburgh. If they can signal to them that they are serious about contending next year, this may open them up to people like Cody Bellinger or Suarez. They mention that this in the article as a way of saying they may be looking at those guys but more so I think getting this news out might make these other agents actually give the Pirates a fair hearing.

The Pirates made an offer – if indeed they actually made an offer – that they knew would never be accepted or even seriously considered. Now, they can tell the few fans who actually still believe anything Cherington says that they were all in but just couldn’t match Seattle. The Pirates are interested in Schwarber? Well, who isn’t? Interested enough to compete for him! To pay the going rate? Of course not. We are going to see this year’s versions of Tommy Pham and Rowdy Tellez and Adam Frazier, and we won’t see them until the new year when all who are going to be signed have been signed and we have the leftovers who the Pirates hope will play well enough to fetch a prospect at the deadline.

Obviously I would be over the moon if they signed him but it just doesn’t seem realistic in the least. Naylor would have been somewhat possible but he already has a great relationship with the Mariners so they’d have a tough time. His contract is pretty fair.

I think there’s an outside chance they can get someone like Suarez who teams may be scared of due to his age and cold streaks. Something like 2 years 55M or so, or a one year opt out might have to do. I am interested in guys like Grisham, O’Hearn and Bader but will they revert back into being bench bats or stay a solid starter??

Didn’t Kyle just decline a QO of 22m? hes probably going to want more than 22m at this point even if the AAV is a little lower. I’m not a fan of Kyle and i’m not sure why, but certainly would be an over all upgrade.

Given the options mentioned in this post, Alonso would be a great target as he can still play 1b and not stuck to DH. And still leave the door open for Cutch to play. I doubt Alonzo would do anything less than 3y/90m.

With a bit of risk Okamoto would probably be the cheapest. and gives good positional flexibility but more unknowns.

I think either ONE would be a good fit but If they were to trade Keller they better make a serious run at another semi-proven non-bad bat.

I doubt they do any of that, Trade is about the only way they’ll add a better than average bat. Pirates got a reputation and agents probably don’t even tell players the Pirates are calling

If they move on from Cutch then theyre about half the way there to 28 mil AAV for Kyle .

Tell me Schwarber and Suarez are coming. Tell me a Bellinger is also coming. It’s nice to dream.

Schwarber’s HRs alone would net Pirates 20 more wins in all those 1-run losses.

Let alone his impact on extending the lineup which has some bats like Reynolds and Horwitz to put around him. And allow Cruz to bat like 7th where he belongs.

One bat can absolutely make a difference in MLB, what are you saying? That the Blue Jays are anywhere near as good without Vlad Jr. ?

Pirates rotation depth is filthy whether they trade Keller or not

Signing someone like Schwarber or Alonso alone solves 90% of their issues on offense.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the Pirates but there is little chance they sign Schwarber. But nice to hear they were in on Naylor!

They need to make smart, mid to upper tier signings, not reclamation projects or under performing veterans. If they can make 3 solid 12-17 million per year signings, they stand a decent chance of being very competitive in the division with the pitching staff they have.

Very Huntington like. I bet they go “way out of their comfort zone,” yet sign no one of consequence. The idea of them increasing the payroll by $40mil is laughable. I bet they spend $25 million, which includes trading Keller for cheaper talent, which will offset the majority of those dollars.

more than fair take but we do know that the pirates are semi-obligated to spend a certain amount and they have the best pitcher in baseball next couple years is the time to spend if they can. Just hope they don’t just spend to spend and get someone who can really help.

Schwarber will come to Pittsburgh when pigs fly.
The Phillies need him and he wants to stay.
And his contract will be long enough that the last couple of years will not be productive.
