Happy Thanksgiving to MLBTR’s readers in the United States, and for our non-American readers….uh, happy Thursday? Here are three things we’re keeping an eye on besides the turkey in the oven….
1. Blue Jays land Dylan Cease:
The reigning AL champs made the priciest free agent signing in team history yesterday, as reports indicated that Toronto inked Dylan Cease to a seven-year, $210MM contract. The contract will be finalized once Cease passes a physical, and while it’s just a matter of time before we get the official announcement, it’s possible things could be delayed a few days simply due to the Thanksgiving weekend. As it stands, the Jays seem to have already finished up their rotation shopping pretty early in the offseason, between the Cease signing and Shane Bieber’s surprising decision to exercise his player option to remain in Toronto through the 2026 campaign. With the starting pitching mix potentially settled already, the Blue Jays can now turn their attention to re-signing Bo Bichette or adding another big bat to their lineup. For the rest of the league, Cease’s decision removes a top-tier arm from the board, so pitching-needy teams will have to turn their attention to other starters in free agency or on the trade market.
2. Rockies re-introduce Warren Schaeffer:
After operating as Colorado’s interim manager for most of the 2025 season, Warren Schaeffer was named the club’s new full-time skipper. There hadn’t been much news about the Rockies’ managerial search because, in essence, one didn’t happen, as president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta explained at a press conference yesterday. DePodesta told the Denver Post’s Patrick Saunders and other reporters that he informally looked into some other candidates but “ultimately, I didn’t feel the need to interview anybody else,” as “I would say, even a week in….it became pretty clear to me that [Schaeffer] was a good direction to go.” This won’t exactly calm the fears of Rockies worried that the team is still going to be operating in an insular fashion, even though DePodestra is an entirely fresh face as the new head of the front office. Still, Schaeffer received praise for how he handled stepping into a rough situation last season, and his 36-86 record is obviously far more a reflection on Colorado’s dismal roster than on Schaeffer’s work in his first season as a big league manager.
3. The Anthony Rendon era nears an end in Anaheim:
Anthony Rendon’s MLB career may be officially over after 12 seasons, as the oft-injured third baseman is reportedly discussing a buyout plan with the Angels heading into the final year of his contract. Presumably the $38MM owed to Rendon in 2026 would instead be paid out in deferred fashion over several years, giving the Angels some more short-term spending ability. Rendon’s seven-year, $245MM deal signed in December 2019 will go down as a complete bust, as Rendon ended up playing in only 257 games over the life of the contract due to a wide variety of injuries, including a hip surgery that cost him the entire 2025 season.

“over the lift of the contract”?
Obviously they meant over the left of the contract. Read between the lines.
The loft-y expectations in life to lift the spirit are left to those who can read between the lanes.
Over the left of the contract makes even less sense
I was sensing a play on words, or rather, letters.
Thanks to all the phil in proof reeders today, as the staph enjoys the holiday
Try life
Did you mean read between the lenes?
Many commenters yesterday were saying Rendon stole the money. They will want to read it as “over the grift of the contract”.
I remember that off season, I liked Rendon more than Soto at the time.
SoCal and that money chewed Rendon up. That money stole Rendon.
Hard to handle success and fame, as a Mexican ballplayer in SoCal, expectations to be the hero to the Mexican people and his country, SoCal is as much a Mexican state as it is a state of the USA.
That failure will be difficult to live with.
If I were the Angels, I’d get that deal off the books in a lump sum and forgo the deferred money. It’s a drag having deferred payments to a guy who has been a drag for too long.
NoABS,
I think the Angels would prefer to drag it out. At least it will free up some money to sign players and help the team starting with the 2026 season
Anthony Rendon is just a guy who was quiet quitting at work. We’ve all been there. I’m not going to judge him.
Leave the judging to us who have played team sports… Rendon is a fraud who milked the system.
Absolutely
Does badminton count ?
So you’re saying he conspired with Doctors and Surgeons to make up these fake injuries?
Hey Rendon, how are you feeling today?
No. Anyone can comment not just you “Al Bundy ” types who comment on EVERYTHING
Former Red Sox Defends ‘Misunderstood’ Anthony Rendon Amid Buyout Report share.google/x75ZC9ttjKTJmkGpM
““Anthony Rendon is one of the most misunderstood players, maybe of all time,” Pillar claimed. “He’s very outspoken in his beliefs, but he’s not saying anything that some other players aren’t saying.”
…
“People forget that baseball, to a lot of us — yes, we do love it and we’re passionate about it. But at the end of the day, it is a job,” Pillar explained. “The joy for a lot of people, when you get to the major leagues, some of it is taken away from you. I felt it towards the end of my career.””
You’re saying it’s okay to quiet quit because “everyone does it,” but I completely disagree — not everyone does. I don’t. And a lot of people who take pride in their work don’t either. Being judged pushed me to outwork everyone around me, and that’s exactly how I earned respect in my career.
So when someone like Anthony Rendon is on a huge contract — getting paid franchise-cornerstone money — I expect more than quiet quitting or checking out. That kind of paycheck comes with responsibility, leadership, and effort, not disappearing when things get tough.
I’ve never quit anything in my life, and that’s why I’ve overachieved. Winners don’t quit — especially not when they’re being paid like stars.
Great post even though urnuts…
Jk jk, Happy Thanksgiving everybody!
Imagine being enough of a baby to type all that out. Lighten up man.
Are you saying I overachieved my limited of words in my post? I thought about quitting after one line and Rendon it in.
Don’t bother with raregokus; he has established his troll status here on this site long ago.
I have commented on this site under 25 times total lmao
Doing the Angels a favor. They don’t have his useless, nasty a** taking up a roster spot. And so they can spread that
38 mil over 10 years or whatever, has to be worst contract in MLB history.
And a lot of people who take pride in their work don’t either.
========================
There is an in-between slot, imo, where almost no one gives it a full 7 hours. My guess is that a lot of people come in, inherit a job that never took 7 hours to do, and figure out how to save a further few minutes, which they keep to themselves.
I don’t think I have ever worked a job where people didn’t go online, or spent 10 minutes chatting in the kitchen.
What’s “online”? We used to goof off calling Sportsline.
That’s your opinion as a stock investor, JoeBrady.
I tried to quiet quit farting, but it still stinks.
lmao. A byproduct of Thanksgiving!
Rendon or Chris Davis?
Davis didn’t flat out quit or check out mentally like Rendon did after he got his big money deal.
Yeah, at least Crush was clearly frustrated and disappointed in himself and his poor performance.
Rendon was just like “it’s just baseball fam, why so serious lol.”
Even with his previous comments about baseball and family while with the Nats, if someone offered you $35M, not for one year, but seven, guaranteed, would you say no?
To be fair we don’t know what constant injuries and pain did to his motivation. Yeah, maybe he just wanted the payday but being hurt definitely can sapp the motivation.
Ideally you stay sharp and try to work towards a comeback but at some point people can have enough and check out.
Sucks for the angels of course as they pay him a huge amount of money but it is not easy when you are constantly hurt.
Based on Rendons comments combined with rendon cashing out it’s clear to me what kind of person he is. Dude stole money, not only did he not play but he wasn’t even a good teammate and his comments of indifference just show him as a real turd. Dude is a loser, a rich loser but a loser. LAA getting that cancerous joke far and away from them can only be a positive.
Yeah,
Yeah, can’t stay motivated trying to honor a $245,000,000 contract. Poor guy.
With severe chronic pain in numerous areas i continue the full 7,8, what ever hours. At 75 there is no time to cheat. Or coast or be a light weight.
I’ve worked with fellas wanting me to slow down. They drain.
Strasburg and Bryant have to be in the conversation. At least the Angels got one good season out of Rendon.
As in… worse contract? Rendon, and it’s not close.
At least he returned positive WAR, though at $80mm per. Davis was negative.
Yeah, Strasburg was negative for more $ but it was a clearer case of a disabling injury. But as far as skills falling off a cliff, it should be restated as Rendon Davis or Bryant.
Davis tried but lost the skills required; Stras and Bryant have/had life-altering injuries. Those instances become “excusable” in the grand scheme of things. Rendon quitting on the team and the sport makes him guilty of being the “worst” contract ever.
Rendon had serious injuries too. If he hadn’t made the comments suggesting he wasn’t all that committed to baseball, we’d be putting him in the same category as others whose big contracts were busts due to injury, also including Prince Fielder and David Wright.
What were Rendon’s “serious” injuries? Hurt hand from slapping an A’s fan? Hurt booty from reading all the negative comments about his lazy @$$?? Hurt pride??? Carpal tunnel from overuse of his Xbox???? Rendon is a fraud who faked injuries to stay home.
Yeah yeah right. He got Doctors and Surgeons to agree on his master plan.
I ask again Anthony, what serious injuries did you sustain?
Two hip surgeries and a fractured tibia. I hear that hip surgeries are hard to come back from at full strength.
Or Kris Bryant.
Happy Thanksgiving MLBTR!
Happy Thanksgiving to everyone except that one guy.
@RotiniRick
And he knows who he is.
I can totally get behind the concept of “the right person was here all along”, but to not feel the need to interview anybody else in Colorado at all? Yikes…
Feels more like ‘there are so many more important problems here, this isnt broke so leave it be’.
What difference could it make with that minor league roster?
I wonder if that speaks more to the fact that no one else applied?
Plenty would want that job – you can only go up from the bottom
Happy Thanksgiving, MLBTR. God is good and gracious to us, thankful for his provision.
He’s extra good to Dylan Cease lol
Dan Quayle is extra, extra good then
They meant LIFE OF THE CONTRACT
Really cptwhite, you just figure that out??? Pretty sure everyone on here knew that before your insightful comment!!!
Happy Thanksgiving to all fans of the 29 best baseball teams in the world.
Can’t say whether or not Rendon gave up, but he didn’t do anything for Trouts legacy. Look at the stats of both players since 2019. Can’t say there doesn’t appear to be a clubhouse cancer there. Maybe Trout tried harder to fill 2 players shoes and hurt himself, but, there is a very comparable issue here.
The Rockies obviously know they are not going to be contending anytime soon. Schaeffer is just a place holder. Why spend the money on upgrading now when the team is going to suck.
Rendon should be embarrassed – As a fan of baseball, my buddies an I always had a running bet on when he would get “injured”. If he wasn’t interested in playing (using his past comments), he should have retired instead of screwing the Angels.
Happy Thanksgiving from Colorado. Let’s go Rockies! At least we have the AV’s, Nuggets and Broncos to be thankful for. Be safe everyone!
How much is it to become a member on this site?
Castellanos would be a great Halo. 😊
Out of curiosity, are you an Angels fan or a Phillies fan?
Phillies. Please Angels, please.
I figured you were a Phillies fan, but i wasn’t sure. Castellanos isn’t my cup of tea due to his defense and lack of plate discipline, but im sure many Angels fans would like to add his pop to the lineup.
His pop Jorge is Cuban.
I rather have Bregman
Happy Thanksgiving to MLBTR staff and to all very entertaining commentators.
Well… if everyone remembers the year he was a free agent everyone made a joke about the Angels out bidding themselves for Rendon. No other team offered him a contract because of comments he made beforehand about how he didn’t care about baseball. I don’t feel sorry for the Angels because he warned everyone before he just took the money and ran.
He made those comments after he signed with the Angels
MLB owners may force a 2027 work stoppage, a Reverse Rendon.
My Question on Rendon is with all the injuries(?) were there ever a time where he was actually in the clubhouse while rehabbing. I don’t ever remember a time where it was reported that he was still a member of the clubhouse, it sounded like he was just sitting at home collecting a check. Now that once the Rendon era is over, we will turn to the Bryant and Colorado contract being the next buy out that could come down the line by the end of this upcoming season..
I wonder if he’s golf buddies with the other bag of glass bust Jacoby Ellsbury.. granted Ellsbury wasn’t a quarter billion dollars he was a huge bust for the Yankees and his contract ended similarly with the Yankees wanting to work something out over that last turd year.
Yes, it’s time for retirement for Rendon…
Angels’ Anthony Rendon Injured Picking Up Thanksgiving Turkey, Out For 2026 Season
mlbonfax.com/post/angels-anthony-rendon-injured-pi…
…and yes, I know it’s a joke/fake.
I don’t feel sorry for Anthony Rendon AND Arte Moreno.
I would like answers from you guys…
A lot of you hate Rendon for the fact he got a very favorable contract.
Let’s remember you get that contract based on what you have already accomplished in your career.
A lot of you hate Rendon because of the remarks he’s made regarding Baseball being just a job and he made those remarks while being hurt and being paid millions.
Do you people think he conspired with doctors and surgeons to make up these injuries?
I’ve personally never heard or read an Angel team mate say Rendon is jaking it. Or anything similar to that.
I had some Ellsbury sauce with my turkey. I agree it’s not deliberate on his part but it doesn’t sit well with most fans. Wright, Pedroia, many others. Injuries generally ruin careers way too often. The willingness of teams to offer these long expensive contracts is never ending. Cost of doing business, I guess.
Also, happy Thanksgiving, MLBTR (except to Mercenary.Freddie.Freeman)
20 years ago Thanksgiving the Red Sox acquired Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell, and Guillermo Mota from the Marlins for Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez. That was the last big Thanksgiving move the Red Sox have made, and like the Curt Schilling trade 2 years prior led to a World Series Championship. It would be nice to see Breslow pull off a game changing move today but it seems very unlikely
