The Brewers and Royals officially announced the three-player trade (reported yesterday) that sent Isaac Collins and Nick Mears to Kansas City in exchange for Angel Zerpa. Brewers president of baseball operations Matt Arnold spoke to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the trade today, and revealed the interesting detail that the club was “open to” the idea of Zerpa moving from the bullpen back to rotation work.
“We have some scouts that think he can do it. He has done it in the past,” Arnold said. “This guy also has postseason experience, too, which we obviously value a lot. Having a guy with that kind of versatility and experience in big games is something we think will really help us.”
As we’ve seen teams move away from traditional pitching roles in recent years, there has been an increased willingness to explore turning relievers (sometimes even career relievers) into starting pitchers. If clubs no longer expressly need their starters to throw more than five innings or take more than two turns through an opposing lineup, stretching a reliever out to handle this increased workload is more of a realistic goal than stretching a reliever to handle seven-plus innings.
Zerpa began his pro career as a starting pitcher, and worked as a starter in three of his first four career games in the majors (in 2021-22). He started only three of his 15 appearances for the Royals in 2023, however, and hasn’t since started a game in anything outside of an opener capacity. Instead, K.C. used Zerpa as a southpaw bullpen weapon, and the hurler posted a 4.03 ERA, 20.8% strikeout rate, 8.0% walk rate, and a whopping 60.6% groundball rate over 118 1/3 innings in 2024-25.
Right-handed hitters were quite productive against Zerpa even as he mostly dominated lefty swingers, and he allowed a lot of hard contact along with his uninspiring strikeout and walk numbers. Zerpa is a hard thrower whose fastball averaged 96.2mph in 2025, but his standard four-seamer hasn’t been very effective over the last two years, while his 96.6mph sinker is his top pitch. The slider was thrown 44.6% of the time in 2025, with a slider used 31.9% of the time and the four-seamer 19.8% of the time. As Hogg noted, increased usage of a changeup might be necessary to help the 26-year-old Zerpa adjust back to starting pitching.
It isn’t the kind of arsenal that immediately stands out as a rotation candidate, and it might be that Zerpa just winds up as a reliever if the Brewers decide against the role change in Spring Training. That said, the fact that the Brewers in particular see starting potential in Zerpa is probably a plus in favor of the experiment working. Milwaukee’s ability to turn unheralded pitchers into capable or even elite starters or relievers has been perhaps the key element of the team’s success over the last decade, so nobody should rule out the possibility that the Brew Crew could help Zerpa unlock another level of performance no matter his role.
Arnold said the Brewers had “been trying to access [in a trade] for a long time,” as “I think that our group felt like this was a really strong arm to access with really, really good ingredients. We’re very excited to get him with our coaches who have done a great job tapping into arms like this for a number of years.”
Zerpa is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason, and is arb-controlled through the 2028 season. Because he has primarily operated as a non-closer, Zerpa’s first-year arbitration projection is only $1.2MM. This is a solid price tag even if the left-hander stays in the pen, but he can successfully move into the rotation, he’ll be even more of a bargain over Milwaukee’s period of team control.
One reason why Zerpa may remain in the Brewers’ pen is the club’s current rotation surplus. Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff, Quinn Priester, Chad Patrick, and Jacob Misiorowski line up as the projected starting five, and plenty of other starting candidates (i.e. Logan Henderson, Robert Gasser, Carlos Rodriguez, Tobias Myers) are depth options. The “you can never have too much pitching” mantra applies here since this group is likely to be naturally thinned out by injuries, plus Woodruff and Peralta are both set to become free agents next winter. As trade rumors persist about Peralta, it is even possible the Brewers could suddenly have a big hole atop their rotation this offseason.

it amazes me how many repeat commenters here can’t bother to give this site $3 a month. commenting on every article without contribution.
I prefer to contribute by dodging all the ads that cover the screen.
Hate to tell you, but the repeat commenting is actually what keeps this place afloat.
Weird comment dude?!🤔
Think Ashby gets 1st crack, hes getting paid and you can see the potential, but between Zerpa, Ashby, and Hall I feel confident they’ll get at least 1 solid LH starter this year.
If he moves to the rotation, it at least kind of makes sense to trade both Collins and Mears for him. But that is still a confounding trade to me from the Brewers perspective. Then again, the Brewers front office has won more division titles than I have, so maybe they know what they are doing.
As a Royals fan, I’d say this is a fleece. No clue how the Brewers parted with 5 years of Collins. His OBP was higher than Witt’s.
I have a sneaking suspicion the Brewers front office is aware of this obp stat.
I think the perception is Collins is a young stud but he’s 28 years old and finally had a shot in the pros. He made the most of it but hardly a lock to repeat last year’s numbers. Brewers cut money which was their ultimate goal while adding more clarity to their OF logjam. Zeros was an arm the Brewers really value and could be a valuable starter in the future with Freddy and Woody possibly leaving after the season. I like it for both teams.
CollinsCollins couldn’t hit a fastball in the last month of the season and the playoffs. He was clearly overmatched and in over his head.
Maybe he’s still got a couple years of good play left, but turning him and Mears into a 1st year arbitration, serviceable, lefty, major league pitcher…. That’s a win.
Collins, 28, and Mears, 29, both faded in September. The Brewers are thin on lefty starters and will either convert Zerpa to a starter or allow him to replace a lefty reliever who will return to starting. Collins needed to find a new home to allow the Brewers to give oft-injured OF Garrett Mitchell a final chance to nail down center field and allow Jackson Chourio to play left, where he is more comfortable. Another factor is that Zerpa has a minor league option but Mears doesn’t.
I think Collins is not much of an improvement over the outfielder stock currently on hand for the Royals. It would be nice if Jac could find his stroke and lock down right field. The flotsam and jetsam covering the other two spots are definitely uninspiring. Do you view them as significantly better than the 2025 version?
5yrs of control, but he’s a 29yr old corner OF only, fringe starter. Neither guy was a lock to make MKE opening day roster and Mears had no options left. I think this was a fair trade for both teams.
It just seems they overpaid, should’ve been perkins/mears not Collins/mears in my eyes….
Perkins is better than Collins.
Agree. Perkins in center field is beautiful defensively.
no he is not
Yeah..great how people just say a sentence and act like it’s True…. Freaking morons dude
Yeah well so is frelick and so is Mitchell…. Perkins is redundant…. At least Collins puts up an OPS over.700 …. And significantly over…. But just say what u want and it’s true right…. Obviously wrong…. Thank God Jesus is coming back to realign everyone and everything with the Truth cause it’s needed..
Wow
Perkins is a great guy as a fourth OF. But less than average as a starter. Defensive replacement, injury replacement, giving guys a day off without losing defense. Those are high value traits in the 4th OF. He’s one of those guys that is quietly valuable to any playoff team.
I guess it’s up to Murphy who starts now. So does this mean offers for Peralta are starting to come in where they’re looking for more starters? I thought maybe Hall would move up but he hasn’t been very healthy. I think the Brewers are very far from a finished product at this point , What say Brewers fans? From a Cub fan.
The Brewers’ likely overriding goal is to surround Jackson Chourio with as much young, elite talent as possible. Toward that end, they likely will pay attention to what the Orioles offer for Peralta. Baltimore is supplanting youth with veteran stars and would be interested in adding an all-star starting pitcher at Peralta’s bargain salary. Mayo, Cowser and Beavers could be in play as Matt Arnold stockpiles talent to supplement his own young studs who are a year or two away from MLB. The Brewers will be adding Jordan Montgomery to their active roster later this season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
Been seeing a ton of people talk about how the Brewers got had on this trade. Funny thing is alot of those people were making similar comments about the Priester deal.
mlbtraderumors.com/2025/04/brewers-to-acquire-quin…
Alot of Priester is garbage, wasted talent, Brewers got fleeced for a meh pitcher. Fast forward a few months and that garbage pitcher put up just shy of 3 bWAR
The Brewers scout/develop pitching as well as or better than any other org, and Arnold said he has been trying to “access” Zerpa for awhile. You’d think people would recognize that perhaps the Brewers see something they dont, or at least have been humbled enough to let some doubt creep in
Your Brewer panties are showing on every comment
He’s right. Here’s a typical comment after the Priester trade: “Huge overpay by Brewers for a failure of a pitcher.” That was the consensus at the time, Priester now looks like a solid rotation piece with years of team control.
How stupid of me to speak positively about the Brewers in a Brewers related article’s comment section.
Great point !
The A’s started a business model that allowed a small market team to be competitive year in and year out. The rays improved that model. Now the brewers have perfected it !
There run is more impressive than what the dodgers are doing !
I definitely agree that obviously the Brewers front office is literally and figuratively leagues and leagues far beyond me with their player evaluations…. And getting wins as efficiently at the ML level as they do…. Obviously they’re superb, it’s why I revere them…. Thinking back to when Russel “the muscle” was jacking bombs and how much better those teams could’ve been, the potential was there of course…. But to where they’ve came…. It’s been a steady climb (with several bumps of course) seemingly since they’ve opened Miller Park of course now American Family Field (at first I was so disappointed by that name change…. But what’s better than an American Family) The Crew are a fantastic Org I’m so blessed they’re in my Cheese Loving “home” state…. But they’ve ascended to where they have by not overpaying and it really feels they overpaid here…. Mears and his slider have value and that’s just a fact, u don’t throw a slider like that and not have value in the ML…. Collins is way “toolsier” than he gets the credit for, he’s in the what percentile, the 98th% for Chase rate and 90th% contact rate…. That’s not just a “tool” either, that’s ELITE…. He’s fast and has above average arm strength and even his bat speed is well above average in the 65th%…. Collins for Zerpa straight up maaayyyybe if they were desperate for lefty pen help…. But look at this teams construction…. Are they “desperate” for anything?…. That’s the point, they shouldn’t be because they haven’t stretched themselves thin by overpaying, they’ve been traditionally the ones reaping the surplus and I’m afraid even if Zerpa far exceeds “expectations”…. Even if he becomes a decent starter for the next few years for the crew, it’s going to be hard for him to come anywhere close with the WAR Collins will put up, especially considering Collins has two extra years of CHEAP control, add in mears…. Big overpay…. Apparently they wanted him and Arnold/Murph/Hook or whomever was really clamoring for him deserves to get the guy he wants and all right I’ll give them this one, it’s not that I think they’re wrong on Zerpa so to speak, it’s just flat out nobody seems to appreciate Collins other than his fantastic numbers and what’s real…. U have a team full of Issac Collins’s…. That team is going to win…. Cause oh he plays literally everywhere as well…. Also what’s frustrating is I’ll lay out all these points/facts and people just write out a sentence saying they disagree/that I’m wrong but don’t care to explain even perhaps one iota of “proof” how or why…. Why even make the comment then…. Obviously you are far more thought out and insightful and I appreciate that, God Bless!!
Long relief is the new SP. Why not go that route?
Dl hall has that spot😂😂
Weird trade, I thought Collins was really good last season. On the other hand, I didn’t think Zerpa was, yet the Brewers do a 2 for 1 trade . Guess I was wrong.
If you’re still thinking the Brewers got fleeced, you might check out this excellent analysis by Jack Stern: brewerfanatic.com/news-rumors/milwaukee-brewers/an…
Yes we’re all aware of what the Brewers lab might do. It’s just in this moment right now it seems to be an overpay. Even the nerd site BTV said so
Zerpa is three years younger than Mears and has a minor league option, which is valuable to the Brewers. And Collins is an old rookie who had a miserable September at the plate and in the field. The Brewers care about both of those players as contributors to their 2025 success, so they traded them to their favorite trading partner.
A lot of guys on the Brewers had miserable Septembers. Collins wasn’t an exception. If they would’ve gotten a better return maybe a mid level prospect in addition to zerpa then I wouldn’t have had an issue with. The ground ball king struggles against righties and since righties usually pull the ball they were pulling the ball in the direction of two GG. Whatever the Brewers lab might do comes down the line. Did you get enough value in return now is the problem I have
It doesn’t have to match up if the Brewers continue to turn seemingly mediocre pitchers such as Trevor Megill and Jared Koenig into valuable cogs. As far as replacing Collins, they just signed Akil Badoo to add outfield depth and offer a better upside than Collins. The roster is full, but they’re still looking for a backup catcher and inviting offers for Peralta.
I think badoo was signed due to having the option left. Can’t imagine he’s jumping lockridge or Perkins at the moment. And those two pitchers are not the same in the context that we just picked them off the scrap heap. Mears is actually the better comp and that we had to actually give up value to get him too.
Salary control is not to be underrated in MKE, it’s a big salary move for a guy, on the edge if being pretty good. His ERA isn’t bad, elite GB rate, in front of one of the best infield defenses in baseball, is no small thing either. They only gave up two guys that were actually nobody until coming to Milwaukee. Dealing from OF depth made sense.
I think McGill will be the big trade this off season for them, and they keep Freddy at $8M. He’s a steal at that price.
Let’s not ignore Mr grounder struggling against righties despite having the best left side of the INF in baseball last year(Garcia and witt) either tho.
The Brewers have had a good record of recognizing talent and maximizing it before they have to sell it off. So if they think Zerpa can start, I wouldn’t bet against it.
“This guy also has postseason experience, too, which we obviously value a lot”
How much could you really value his 4 IP in the 2024 post season?
Turn an inconsistent reliever into a starter. Makes sense I guess
Compare Corbin Burnes’ 2019 stats to his 2021 stats, when he won the NL Cy Young Award. That will give you an idea of what kind of impact pitching coach Chris Hook has been making on Brewers pitchers.
Corbin wasn’t a reliever in 2019. He was in 2018 tho but that was only ever supposed to be temporary
They knew they had an ace in Corbin long before 2019. Every team called them for him even when he was getting hammered left and right.
I’m aware. Kratz revealed they could’ve had degrom for woody and Corbin at the 18 deadline. We can pretty much guess the O’s wanted him for Machado too
Open competition in spring training between Ashby/Hall/Zerpa. Winner gets to open the season in the rotation with the other two in the bullpen. Of course that’s if any of them get it because unless Peralta is traded you would think the rotation would be:
Peralta
Misiorowski
Priester
Patrick
Myers
Henderson
No on Myers!
I’d like to see Gasser get his legs back under him after his rehab season last year, he’s going to be so much better than Myers.
You forgot about Woodruff
Yes i did. Brewers seem to have a full rotation even if Peralta is traded
I can understand wanting to think Milwaukee should have received more for what they gave up but I think we are past the point of questioning that organization with any move they make. As a Reds fan I have watched Milwaukee continue to win on the field and off the field even when the so called experts don’t see it.
You also need to keep in mind what quality relief pitching fetches on the market these days. Seattle had to give up one of their top prospects, Han Solo to get George Clooney’s Uncle for their bullpen. They needed a LH reliever so they gave Washington a potential stud behind the plate to get him. That’s a lot easier call to make when you have the best Catcher in the game.
Milwaukee did the same thing. OF is a position of strength for them so it was a lot easier for them to move Collins to get that bullpen piece to improve their club.
Relief pitching is more valuable than it’s ever been. You’re going to pay a premium to get a quality bullpen piece you can rely on instead of rolling the dice with a free agent you may DFA before August.
