As one of the few teams in baseball in true rebuild mode, the Cardinals are open to offers on most players on their roster, yet some of the Cards’ most-cited trade candidates may be a little more available than others. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch hears from sources on rival teams that the Cardinals don’t seem to be “actively seeking to trade” outfielder Lars Nootbaar. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Nootbaar won’t be dealt, of course, but there are also some obvious reasons why the Cardinals might want to wait until beyond this offseason to move the 28-year-old.
Injuries have been a subplot of Nootbaar’s career, and while he hit new career highs in games played (135) and plate appearances (583) in 2025, he underwent surgery in October on both of his heels. The surgery was meant to address Haglund’s deformities, which are bone spurs that develop on the heel bone near the base of the Achilles tendon. It seems likely that playing through this discomfort led to Nootbaar’s underwhelming numbers in 2025, and it isn’t yet known if the recovery from the procedure will allow Nootbaar to be ready for Opening Day.
Between the health question mark and Nootbaar’s 96 wRC+ (from 13 homers and a .234/.325/.361 slash line), St. Louis would probably be selling low if Nootbaar was traded this winter. As such, it makes sense that the Cardinals would hang onto Nootbaar for now and see if he’s able to bounce back in the first half of the 2026 season, so a trade deadline move might be more realistic.
Trading Sonny Gray to the Red Sox cleared $20MM off of the Cardinals’ payroll ledger for 2026, and the team would also save a lot of money if Nolan Arenado or Willson Contreras were traded. There isn’t any similar financial pressure involved with a potential Nootbaar trade, as he is projected to earn $5.7MM this winter in the second of three trips through the arbitration process. That extra year of control gives the Cards more flexibility in allowing Nootbaar to get fully healthy before more properly shopping him to any interested teams.
President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has been open about his team’s desire to add starting pitching, whether it’s younger arms or (likely on short-term deals) more experienced hurlers. The Gray trade brought Richard Fitts and prospect Brandon Clarke into the fold, and St. Louis is expected to seek out more pitchers in other trades or in free agency. Whether or not the Cards explore free agent pitchers will hinge on what they can land on the trade front, Goold writes, so it may be yet be a while before the Cardinals look too deeply at signings given how much interest they’re getting in their various trade chips.
Other teams’ trade endeavors could also delay matters. For instance, Goold notes that some teams interested in Brendan Donovan for their second base vacancy also have interest in the Rays’ Brandon Lowe or even the Diamondbacks’ Ketel Marte. If one of those players is dealt elsewhere, that eliminates one Donovan suitor, but also puts more pressure on other interested teams to up their offers to St. Louis in order to land a second baseman (though Donovan’s versatility also doesn’t limit his market just to keystone-needy teams).
Perhaps related to both the Cardinals’ pitching search and the Royals’ known interest in Donovan, Goold reports that the Cards “have had interest before in” Kansas City’s Noah Cameron. The 26-year-old southpaw is coming off an impressive debut season that saw Cameron finish fourth in AL Rookie of the Year voting after posting a 2.99 ERA over 138 1/3 innings.
Between Cameron’s ability and multiple remaining years of team control, it would take a whole lot to pry the left-hander away from the Royals. While K.C. president of baseball operations J.J. Picollo has discussed his team’s openness to trading from its pitching depth for much-needed outfield help, Cameron would likely be one of the last arms the Royals would prefer to move. That said, adding a real impact bat to the lineup might require an impact pitcher in return, and Donovan’s market has been so crowded that the Royals might make to make a special offer to break away from the pack.

Donovan and Jo Jo Romero for Noah Cameron and Jonathan India.
Why would we want India? We have a glut of middle infielders already and India isn’t anything special.
India hits great in Cards stadium, would be a solid piece for 1 year. It is a FA year for India. I bet he bounces back. Would not be bad for 1 year and a vet to help in clubhouse.
Sorry bud. Understand the desire to want your team to get better but the royals should have non tendered India. It’s going to take more to get Donavan than it did to get Gray.
That just means he hits well against the Cardinals and that’s not really a surprise when India probably has more ABs off Miles Mikolas than any pitcher he’s faced.
Also he’s the worst defender in the Majors
Pretty sure Cards are trying to cut salary by not taking on washed vets on expensive contracts…
Cardinals have no need for India.
Would love for the cards to land Cameron for Donavan. Definitely would not be a 1 for 1 trade, but I could see a trade coming together.
How about Donovan and relief pitcher Leahy for Cameron and royals prospect SP Drew Beam.
No chance Cardinals move Leahy, and especially not in a deal like that. They value him very highly and are having him start in 2026. It would be Cameron + for Donovan without the Cardinals adding.
You would get 6 years of Cameron. The Cardinals will add even if is Jo Jo Romero for 1 yr. KC could add Angel Zerpa LH Relief.
Ferrer just got Harry Ford, so JoJo probably has pretty good value in his own right. There is a bidding war for Donovan and I wouldn’t be surprised if another team is offering a centerpiece that’s even more attractive to the Cardinals than Cameron.
Ditto to Mack’s comment
Ferrer has 4 years compared to jojos 1. He’s also cheaper with a higher ceiling
Good call on team control. Ferrer could be a tweak or two away (slider? change?) from being a real weapon with his stuff, but right now Romero has had much better results.
lol Zerpa, who they should have DFA’d about 3 times this season? Cmon man
5 years.
Cameron has a 4.18 FIP, 4.10 xFIP, 4.08 xERA, and 4.33 SIERA
Cards need to rebuild the farm, so go and send Donovan to Seattle and nab a couple of the kids from that pipeline
Nootbar, Donovan, Gorman and Romero for Cameron, India and Isbel
Cards really don’t need Isbel. They already have that almost exact player in Victor Scott.
Are you high?
No to India and Isbel, yes to Shields, Arronde, or Wolters.
Wolters or Arronde I am ok with. Shields no way. Will be a #2 for sure. Possible #1. Arronde is a wild card. He needs to bulk up. He has the pitches, he is more advanced than Wolters. Strike thrower. Could be a starter or dangerous bullpen piece.
No way. That has the Cardinals giving up way too much. No chance at all to happen
That’s a whole lot of decent to good baseball players essentially for Noah Cameron. India is a negative contract. And there’s a lot of reason to think Cameron is a back of the rotation pitcher who had a lucky season in an extreme pitcher’s park last year.
I have been watching Cameron since High School days in St. Joe, MO. about 45 minutes from KC. You have no clue. Cameron is a stud 7 pitches, cool and collected while on the mound. He will be a good MLB pitcher. KC Royals have a top pitching program now. Cameron is no fluke.
PFSKC#7: Which organization do you scout for?
None. Played college ball at NW MO State. Love baseball and catch all MO talent. Try to get around to games and followed kids like Cameron, Kurdna, And Jensen since highschool.
Don’t get me wrong, donovan is a good player and is probably worth more than what his stats say. That being said, Stl shouldn’t be expecting that big of a prospect haul for him. There’s a good match between with what Stl can give up (Donovan, Burleson, Romero, and too a lesser extent Gorman). I’m just not sure I want to send Cameron back. I think I’d have to have Walker back in any trade for Cam.
Cards still believe in Walker theres a corner outfield spot with his name on it everyday for him next season.
at The K? 😂
Donnie, Noot, and Jojo for Noah Cameron?
What about Donovan, Romero, Burleson, and Walker for Cameron and some filler?
I hope you’re joking. If not, this is the probably the worst trade proposal I’ve seen recently. You have the Cardinals adding three pieces for no return value.
You really need to study the market for Donovan. It ain’t this.
@Cards — Donnie under control for two more years and a projected value of $12-15m/yr. He’s a very good player, but not a blockbuster.
Donnie in a move with Noot (three years of control and good upside, but brittle) and Jojo (1yr of control at $6m) as a legit setup man seems solid.
Cameron is a 4 WAR player with five years of control, but the Royals have a pitching surplus.
Donnie, Noot, and Jojo are Major League ready, controllable, and reasonably-priced for a win-now team that doesn’t like to spend money.
Donovan and crooks cather for the future and remero
I am curious Cards fans which of your teams Catchers do you think could be traded?
Most likely Pages or Pozo. Maybe Crooks, though he’ll probably be our starting catcher next year, assuming that Herrera won’t stick at catcher (again) and will likely be in left field. Unlikely the Cards will let Herrera be involved in a trade this year.
Bernal and Rodriguez are highly touted and significant pieces of the team’s rebuild, so maybe one of them, but I wouldn’t think the Cards would be too willing to move one of them, either.
I think Crooks. Pages is needed in case Herrera’s return to catching doesn’t go well and Pozo is needed as the first man up at AAA. They seem very high on Bernal and will need to give him a lot of AAA at-bats very soon, so it would be nice to get out ahead of that. Rodriguez isn’t going anywhere and will probably end up moving off catcher. Graysen Tarlow also kind on the peripheral of the conversation as well, probably seeing a lot of AA time this year if Bernal is promoted.
I’m pretty sure they’d trade any of them for the right price. Herrera seems the least likely to get moved after having a breakout season offensively (but again, if the price is right I don’t think they’d say no). If other teams were interested in Pozo they could have claimed or signed him with the Cardinals non-tendered him, so I don’t see him being trading either. Bernal has yet to reach the majors which means he has the most years of team control left, something I’d expect a rebuilding team to value highly. That leaves Pages and/or Crooks as the most likely to be traded in my opinion. Under the previous administration I’d have said the team would have preferred to keep Pages given they seem to like his defense and game planning. But with new management I’m not sure if that’s still true. My guess is that there preference now is simply who brings the highest return.
Noah Cameron worth more imo. There’s more options out there. Sign Bader and Yaz KC. Cags will improve and Rave is going to break out. Need Cameron if you trade bubic, but I think KC should hang onto him and either trade at deadline or extend.
Donovan for Matthews and Ullola?
Cardinals need and want pitching. Ullola is interesting.
I would hate to give up Ullola, and Matthews has shown pop in the bigs. But Donovan is pretty good and giving up 2 top 5’s for him is worth when the Astros need what he can bring so much. Plus we have others like Pecko, Brito, and stuff.
Going to keep those below average OF’s and trade the closer.
Poll….Who will have more wins…..The Cardinals or the Blues???
JJ would be making a huge mistake if he traded the local born kid Noah Cameron, especially for somebody who only has three years of control. where would they play Brendan Donovan ? we already are wasting $8 million on India.
I totally understand royal fans not wanting to trade the local kid Cameron. But, you guys have no idea how happy you will be after watching him play the first couple weeks. He is dale Murphy. He is Yadi. Some guys you just watch play and you don’t have to look at the stats to know he’s a baller. He’s that guy. If you pair him with another baller like Witt… holy crap. Trust me, Cameron isn’t enough.
You can play Donovan at 2B, 3B, LF, or RF.
Here is the fairest mock trade st Louie fans will see all day:
St Louis sends
Arenado
Contreras
Nootbar
Donovan
Romero
Yankees send
McMahon
Luis Gil
Jazz Chisholm
JC Escarra
There isn’t a team wanting Arenado unless his contract is paid down to league minimum.
As a cardinal fan, it would take Cameron, Hammond, and a beam type player for me to be ok with losing BD. It’s going to suck watching him play in a different uniform.
The Cardinals are in “Pirates mode”. The rebuild bs is another excuse to be cheap. Sell the team!
