Phillies Re-Sign Kyle Schwarber

By Darragh McDonald | December 9, 2025 at 7:05pm CDT

The Phillies are bringing him back. Slugger Kyle Schwarber has returned to the Phils on a five-year contract, the team announced. It’s reportedly a $150MM guarantee that pays the Excel Sports Management client an even $30MM per season. The Phils had multiple 40-man vacancies and didn’t need to make a corresponding move.

The deal is a testament to Schwarber’s elite talents as it sets new precedents in a few different ways. Schwarber is primarily a designated hitter, having played the outfield just 13 times combined over the past two years. He is also turning 33 years old in March.

Those are both qualities which tend to tamp down a player’s earning power. As shown in MLBTR’s Contract Tracker, the biggest guarantee for any free agent age-33 or older was Josh Donaldson’s $92MM deal with the Twins, which was signed when he was still a capable third baseman. Pure designated hitters also tend not to get paid. Per the Contract Tracker, Shohei Ohtani is the only free agent DH to get to nine figures. He was obviously a special case as a two-way player and superstar. J.D Martinez signed a five-year, $110MM deal with the Red Sox in 2018. He was still an outfielder at the time but did become more of a DH over the course of that pact.

Schwarber himself has proved to be a special case, as he just keeps getting better at the plate. He has always been a guy who strikes out and walks a lot, with notable power mixed in. From 2017 to 2021, he was generally good for about 30 home runs per year. He got to 38 in 2019, but that was the year with the juiced balls.

Over the past four years, Schwarber has never finished with fewer than 38 long balls. He’s reached 46 in three of those four. In 2025, he set a new personal best with 56. He has also erased his previous platoon issues. In 2024, he slashed .300/.407/.490 for a 152 wRC+ against lefties, compared to a .218/.342/.482 line and 124 wRC+ otherwise. In 2025, those lines were .252/.366/.598 and .232/.364/.541 for respective wRC+ numbers of 162 and 146.

On top of the statistics, Schwarber has received praise for his leadership and clubhouse presence during his time with the Phillies. They clearly wanted to bring him back but plenty of other teams were interested as well. The Mets, Pirates, Reds, Red Sox, Orioles and Giants were all connected to him in recent weeks. The Bucs even reportedly made an offer of four-years and $120MM, a very bold gesture for a club that has never signed a free agent for more than $39MM.

But amid all that interest from other clubs, it always seemed like the safe bet would be Schwarber returning to Philadelphia. He was clearly beloved in the city and in the clubhouse. The Phils have a number of other needs but they have been aggressive spenders in recent years and it seemed like they would likely top whatever deal Schwarber got elsewhere. They have done so and, as mentioned, set new benchmarks for free agent deals for a hitter this age or a designated hitter of any age. MLBTR predicted he could secure a five-year, $135MM deal. He got those five years but did a bit better than predicted in terms of the average annual value.

Per RosterResource, the deal brings the Phils up to a payroll of $270MM and a competitive balance tax figure of $289MM. At the end of 2025, those numbers were $291MM and $314MM. If they plan on getting to a similar spot in 2026, they have about $20MM left to play with.

They still have a few things on the to-do list. In addition to Schwarber, they also want to bring back catcher J.T. Realmuto, who also became a free agent at the end of the 2025 season. Remaking the outfield and adding to the pitching staff are also on the agenda. $20MM wouldn’t be a ton to do all of that, so perhaps they will be willing to raise the payroll again, though they could also try to accomplish a few things on the trade market.

For the other teams, it’s possible that this opens the offseason floodgates. The position player section of free agency has been slow moving so far. Early on, Trent Grisham and Gleyber Torres accepted qualifying offers. The Mariners and Josh Naylor quickly reunited. For the past three weeks, there have been no multi-year deals for free agent hitters.

Now that Schwarber is off the board, the clubs who fell short will be pivoting to other options. Some of those clubs won’t be players for Kyle Tucker or Bo Bichette but perhaps Cody Bellinger, Pete Alonso, Eugenio Suárez, Alex Bregman and others will see their markets heat up in the coming days and weeks.

Jeff Passan of ESPN first reported the five-year, $150MM agreement. Bob Nightengale of USA Today had the even salary breakdown. Photos courtesy of Jayne Kamin-Oncea, Imagn Images

Simm – I bet a very high percentage of people here had him returning to Philly in their picks.

Dombrowski gets it, when you’ve got a player with elite talent you don’t let him get away.

I get the sentiment from a fan of a *crap* owner team, but why take it out on a guy that, YOU, know, wants to win. The Pirates are not going to win. They are like Seattle, you have to trade for guys, to force them onto your team. They ain’t signing there. Polanco isn’t signing either, just like Naylor. Pit has to develop, trade and win before the FA come. Take a breath and pull that bad jue jue out of the aether so karma doesn’t come back at Paul’s arm.

Months ago, I wrote that Schwarber would sign a contract for $30 million a year for 4-5 years – and he would sign with the highest bidder. He did. That shouldn’t be misconstrued as team loyalty on Schwarber’s part. The bottom line is the Mets and Red Sox were too smart to sign him for 5 years, the Reds and Pirates couldn’t afford him, and the Orioles claimed they were also willing to sign him for the same amount – but only as a smoke screen to keep Orioles fans thinking the team was going to do everything it could to be competitive in 2026. The Phils signed him because they realize not many top players want to play in Philly – regardless of the money. They had money to burn, so they signed him – because of his popularity, and not because of his potential going forward.

As expected this team is gonna keep on overpaying aging players without winning a championship. This is gonna be a horrible deal in a couple of years. Get more athletic players (not that they don’t have them). Get rid of Castellanos and don’t clog your DH slot for 5 years with an aging slugger at 30M/year coming off a contract year boost in performance.

Schwarber wouldn’t have taken that as he knows that would have been all of the Pirates budget (legitimately, not just because Nutting is cheap) and he would never have returned to the playoffs. Pittsburgh’s WAY better off having missed on this. Sign a couple professional hitters for half Schwarber’s annual value and they’ll be fine. He’s only a 4 win player now, and will start to decline.

I agree they could sign Bregman or something crazy , but its highly doubtful they do anything like that.

very likely they just end up missing on every free agent and settle on trying to find a random taker for a 8.5 mil 1 year deal on someone worth half that

          Rinse Repeat.

I really thought that with the premise of trading away Keller’s 15 mil , that they could really open the books on Schwarber and offer 40mil or wtvr it would take to make a major league move.

But “raising payroll” is just a mirage. They won’t go near spending the 30 mil AAV amount total now, and will still dump Keller’s contract

Kyle Schwaber is only going to be good for 2 more years and is permanent DH

Pittsburgh only going to have Skenes for 2-3 more years, so was only team that made sense to go 4-5 years on Schwarber

This is like desperate to contend short term window with Skenes rostered , and they literally only signed Tommy Pham last offseason…

If Pirates wont spend right now on an impact bat, then theres no point in supporting them ever.

Ya and then theyll immediately dump Mitch Keller and save 15 mil ,
After saving 10 mil dumping KeBryan Hayes last trade deadline,
and dumping whatever few million Oviedo was going to make, even tho Pirates obviously couldve used Oviedo in their weak pen

So really you think theyre changing their ways,
but are only spending 5 million more, with offsetting moves— and opening new holes at
3B & SP & RP that will obviously get filled by schmucks internally

Not saying that they should/would, but Bellinger would cost roughly the same AAV for longer years. They could use him for 2-3 years of the contract and trade him off.

You are using Win% for a guy who has often inherited bad teams? Really?

Not a steal. This is $7.5m per WAR now, which is a little above market, and he’s 33 next year so will very likely end up being quite a bit more than that. This is a desperation move for a relatively old team, and absolutely the right one. They have to win next year.

So what’s the definition of “won’t take long” because the only time pitches had success against him in recent memory was the 2020 shortened season, and those numbers are largely meaningless.

I think Schwarber was everyone’s pipe dream even though it was always most likely Philly wasn’t gonna let him leave. So as much as it sucks to have that dream killed, it’s actually great that he’s the first major domino to fall. Gives Breslow the opportunity to get serious about other top bats without having to hold back while secretly hoping for Schwarbs.

I won’t be shocked now if Alonso signs later today.

Dirty – Schwarber was the one bat that really would have helped the lineup vs LHP. Really happy for him though.

Alonso’s splits aren’t great. 0.729 OPS vs LHP, 0.929 vs RHP. Schwarber had a 0.964 OPS vs LHP and a 0.904 vs RHP.

There’s still a lot of off-season left! I’m just not really… Believing in Breslow at this point. But let’s see what happens.

mania, You’ve got to be kidding. Do you really think Schwarber is HOF material? I doubt the voters in Cooperstown will. Think about it. The guy is a lifetime .231. hitter who averages more than 200 Ks a season. He was #5 in all of baseball last season for leaving runners on base. In 2024 he was statistically the worst defensive outfielder in baseball. He can’t run or throw, and will probably never play on a world championship team again. Oh, I forgot. He’s good in the clubhouse. From what I’ve been told by reliable sources, so were the hookers at the old Vet. Face it. Schwarber can hit a baseball far – and that’s all he can do. It takes a lot more to get into the Hall of Fame.

Except for the fact in 150 years of baseball history, that type of pedigree always loses their everyday job right about the age that he is now 32 and is out of baseball by 35 – 36.
Dave kingman’s the only guy who’s ever played that late with big power who couldn’t hit. And Dave Kingman was an absolute animal, dude was like 6’6 6’7 maybe any weighed like 210 2:15 solid muscle…. Dude was yoked….. Kyle schwarber on the other hand is in terrible shape. On his best day he’s 5’9, maybe maybe maybe is he 5’10 in his cleats. And he weighs no less than 275 280. And that’s probably when he’s been training. I used to know his ex-girlfriend and met him on several occasions they have him listed at 5:11 but that’s greatly exaggerated because he was the exact same height as me and I weigh 210 and that dude look like he ate two of me.

I know Philly fans get all upset because they love him. And I like the Phillies a lot Don’t get me wrong but this is a stupid deal. Facts in history just prove it. Guys with power who can’t hit do not keep jobs or everyday jobs shall I say much after the age of 32 which is what schwarber is or will be this season.

I bet my life savings he’s out of baseball before this contract’s even up. And I bet money that he will never have more than one season again with 500 at bats.

        Always?

Schwarber is my height. 5’11”. In cleats he was a touch taller than me the last time I saw him face-to-face in Clearwater in 2024. I appeared to outweigh him in photos my wife took at that time and I was at 235.

Go to spring training and then tell us how much you think Schwarber weighs.

Now that you have finished your factless rant, put up your $5 of life savings and let’s make both of those bets.

Overpayment for strictly a DH here who embodies the three true outcomes at the plate. Seems like Schwarbs had Philly where he wanted them, similar AAV from another team, the Pirates, but not sure if Giants or a few other teams that had interest would’ve gone to $30 mill a year for more than 3 years. Philly had to give Schwarbs the dough if they wanted him around to help them still compete to win a title in the next 2-3 years. If he hits at his career avg of .231 and doesn’t hit 40hr again in a season the next 5 years how is this contract gonna look? Do we think he will get to 500 career in a Philly uniform?

          Age 32 season

          Dunn – 41 HR, .800 OPS, 114 OPS+
          Kingman – 22 HR, .782 OPS, 123 OPS+
          Schwarber – 56 HR, .928 OPS, 150 OPS+

One of those things is not like the other two.

Schwarber was 36% better than Dunn at age 32. 27% better than Kingman. Use their age 30-32 seasons the gap between Schwarber and Dunn increases while Kingman’s is equal to to Schwarber in OPS+. The difference is Schwarber improved after 30 and Kingman fell off a cliff because of injuries.

Here are the guys most similar to Schwarber in power through their age 32 season. Rice, Cepeda, Jackson, Schmidt. None of them had an age 32 season with over 40 HR and they 4 averaged 116 HR over the next 5 years in their careers and that is with Cepeda’s career being largely over after 1970 due to a knee injury that he had already had 8 surgeries on by that point.

Martinez’s $110M in 2018 works out to be $144M adjusted for inflation. $150M isn’t that much of a stretch given his leadership role in the clubhouse. The $10M/year raise is probably the big story here.

Also, Schwarber now gets to re-up with Wawa for even more dough!

cheap, You said a mouthful. There are a lot of businesses in Philly that have a lot invested in Schwarber because of his advertising appeal. So, there’s probably a lot more to his signing than most people will ever know.

All I have to say is, when he only hits 35-40 Hrs next year we can’t all be up in arms. It’s a real possibility that there’s some regression. People need to be realistic. And be prepared for Bryce extension talks to start again.

Other than that, if they don’t announce a JT 2/34M I’d be surprised.

Good keep by the Phillies but it is a keep. So far the only two teams that have strengthened themselves so far are Blue Jays with Cease and the Dodgers with Diaz.

It will be interesting to see how Alonso and Tucker land knowing the current standard is 5 years at $30 per. Maybe 6 and $35 per are their ceiling? Question is who steps up.

I was hoping the Cubs would have signed him but at the same time. I’m glad he didn’t sign with the Reds. I really don’t want to see Cubs pitching give up 10 homeruns in a 4 game series at Wrigley Field in the middle of July with the wind blowing out all 4 games

I think I would have missed on Schwarber on this deal

    FG projects him for 2.9.WAR.

That’s just over $30 million in value. He’s barely worth the contract in year one.

Okay. This is fine… if they win a championship in the next 2-3 years. After that, the window will be closed, and given how bad this team is at drafting and developing their own talent the once the window closes it’ll stay closed for a decade.

Window is closed now I think…feels much like the aftermath of the phils run in 2007-2011(that team actually won a WS tho) ….and your on the money with a decade of struggles coming. It was pretty bleak starting in 2012…

    Lmao terrible deal
As I’ve said in other threads. In history nobody ever who has big power but can’t hit has ever had in everyday job much past the age of 32. And 9 times out of 10 they’ve been out of baseball by the time they are 35.
And let’s not forget schwarber is in terrible shape.
The only time a guy with power who couldn’t hit has ever played much past this point as an everyday player was Dave Kingman. And Dave Kingman was a monster made of muscle. Kingman was like 6ft 6 and weighed like 210 to 220 just yoked…. Kyle schwarber is like 5’9, 280…. Yeah yeah I know he’s listed at 5:11 but I guarantee you he’s not. I knew the dude, well let’s just say I met him a few times I knew his ex-girlfriend. And he’s listed at 220, and anybody who can see those damn well that dude doesn’t weigh a pound under 250 and it’s probably closer to a trip.

This is right about the time guys with his pedigree stop playing everyday and are out of the game within a couple years. What in the world makes anybody think that Kyle schwarber would be able to prove 150 years of baseball history incorrect??? Especially for a guy that makes John Kruk look like a gym-rat.

He is great with the Phillies. He may have a few good years left, possibly enough to get into and win a World Series. However, I doubt he will have five good years even as a DH, but it will have been worth it if he can get them to the post season for three of the five years.

Yeah, its a lot for a DH his age. Phillies hoping for Edgar/Papi mid 30’s production. He does seem like a guy who is a bit like Thome and will continue to rake. It’s not like he’ll lose his patience and good eye. When he hits them, he hits them far so he has a bit a leeway there with a slight loss of power as he ages.
You’re main issue is bat speed. If he keeps that in the ballpark of what he has been historically, he should age nicely.

I am glad this got done..This team has some pressing issues going forth. They need to find a power bat from the right side …Centerfield remains an ongoing issue… Even if they lose Ranger and start Painter, they still need another starter.Walker is not the guy and Nola has been less effective each of the last two years. Arms arms arms arms.. never have enough arms.

So now the interesting question…if he just averages 35 HR the next 4 years, he’ll enter the final year needing 20 HR or less to reach 500

His career WAR will probably be 32-35 max unless something wild happens, and a likely career average under .230

I love the guy…but is a .228 career hitter with 500 HR and maybe 34 WAR going into the Hall???

With Schwarber apparently resigning with the Phils, it will be interesting to see:

    1) How Harper handles a DH making more money than him for the next 5 seasons;
    2) How Schwarber handles the increased expectations the Phils, the fans, and the media are about to put on him;
    3) How the Phils will be able to address all their pitching and position needs in 2026 and beyond with $30 million less a year to play with;
    4) How Schwarber’s resigning will attract other top players to Philly or keep them away;
    5) How far the Phils will be willing to go over the salary cap in the next few years, especially if they don’t win a championship; and
    6) Will Schwarber’s new contract contain a no-trade clause.

    1

Also, 7) How Schwarber’s resigning will affect the other teams’ (especially Mets, Red Sox, Orioles, Pirates, and Reds) acquisition of free agents and trades; and
      8) How much the Phils will overspend this offseason to improve the team and become more competitive.

Remember – resigning Schwarber only leaves the Phils as good as they were at the end of 2025. The Phils may be without Wheeler or forced to play with a recently injured Wheeler in 2026, and may also be without any combination of Realmuto, Suarez, Bader, Kepler, and other experienced players who contributed to the Phils’ success in 2025. So, only resigning Schwarber doesn’t improve the Phils for 2026. The team still has to acquire better players at several positions to improve, and that will require either money or the loss of established players or valuable prospects.

1 – Harper has never indicated he wanted to be best paid player and he signed for less than others. So no change.
2 – How are they different?
3 – Phil’s payroll is $23 million less than last year after this signing and they have indicated they do not have a ceiling they have to stay under.
4 – What in the heck?
5 – They are already well over the CBt threshold and the 2nd threshold.

Do you remember the Phillies had the 2nd best record in MLB. Being as good as they were last season is still really good.

        leftfield,

        1) Harper began asking the Phils to rework his contract shortly after Trout was extended by the Angela and paid more than him. When you hear Harper has renewed that request in the near future, remember where you read about it. Schwarber’s contract is sure to cause friction between the two. Don’t forget – Harper is supposed to be the star of the team. As I’ve said many times here, Harper will never retire in a Phillies uniform. Schwarber’s contract may cause Harper to leave sooner than later.

        2) His new contract will increase Schwarber’s expectations by the Phils, fans, and media. They will expect more from him, and not less.

        3) The Phils’ projected 2026 expenditures, including salary, pre-arbitration and arbitration salary increases, is currently $256 million. That does not include salaries to be added. For example, Realmuto and Suarez’s possible salaries, if they resign, are not included, neither are the salaries of any new players that have not yet been signed. Wheeler’s $42 million counts toward the luxury tax if he pitches in 2026 or not. The current luxury tax threshold is $244 million. So, the Phils are already over it. In Sportrac’s analysis, Schwarber is down for a $18 million salary in 2026, not the $30 million he just signed for. So, expect the numbers to rise significantly before the season starts.

        4) Schwarber’s resigning may either entice other players, such as free agents or trade candidates, to join the Phils this season because they think the Phils, with Schwarber, could be a championship team, or Schwarber’s signing could dissuade other players from joining because they may not like the idea of playing with Schwarber – a $30 million a year DH, they may not feel the Phils, with Schwarber, are world series bound, or they may feel Schwarber’s hefty salary may deprive them of their share of the pie if they were to join the Phils.

        5) The Phils are already over the luxury tax threshold. If they were to add a big name player like Cody Bellinger or Ketel Marte without getting rid of similar amounts of salary, they would go over the threshold even more.

I like Shwarber and all….but this core peaked a bit shy of a championship…it isn’t going to happen. I think they bring Realmuto back also….I can imagine what this team will be like in three years…old Harper…old Shwarber…old Realmuto.. a team of dh’s

Im not certain the starting pitching is going to be as lockdown in the coming season either. Nola and Wheeler huge question marks, Suarez coming back?…Not sure with the outfield situation being what it is. Gonna have to invest something out there as we have seen what their ceiling is with middling outfielders..

Feels like we’re heading towards that 10 year drought between competitive teams in Philly….

The obvious winner in the Schwarber resigning is Schwarber who will now earn $30 million a year for the next 5 years to hit 4 or 5 times a game, take batting practice between innings while his teammates are busting their guts playing defense – and usually getting criticized for it the next day in the media, strike out 1.25 times a game, leave more runners on base than only 4 other major leaguers, slow down the Phils’ running game when he gets on base, hit .230, disappoint Phils’ management, fans, and media as he is unable to match his numbers from 2025 because opposing teams decide to not give him anything to hit, and oh yes, do commercials and be a great guy in the clubhouse. Opposing teams learned how to dramatically curtail Harper’s home run production by not giving him anything to hit and frustrating him at the plate. They’re about to do the same to Schwarber. MLB is about to also hurt Schwarber with its balls and strikes challenge which will increase his strikeouts and decrease his walks and batting average. Why? Because he watches a lot of 3-2 pitches and usually gets the call, although replay clearly shows his Ball-4s were usually Strike-3s.

The obvious loser in Schwarber’s resigning is the Philadelphia Phillies. Now cash-strapped for well into the foreseeable future, the Phils will not be able to afford the kind of players they have to acquire right now to plug the many holes in the team’s current lineup, and in coming years, they might not be able to hold on to stars like Sanchez, Luzardo, and Bohm whose salaries will significantly increase. What about Crawford, Miller, and Painter you ask? Sure, they may be able to help the team, but not immediately – and as they mature, the team’s core – Harper, Turner, Sosa, Nola, maybe Wheeler, possibly Realmuto, and oh yes – Schwarber, will continue to age. What about trades, you ask? Sure, the Phils may be able to make a few trades that will improve the team – but at what cost? For years, many have been urging the Phils to get rid of Bohm and acquire either Bregman or Arenado. The Phils could – and get less production for 3-times the amount of money. That’s smart.

It should be apparent that resigning Schwarber for much more than he is worth and for longer than he will be able to produce will hurt the Phils who did it more because of the guy’s popularity and association with the Phils’ business partners than because of his ability to lead the Phils to their next world series championship. If you’re still not convinced, ask yourself if the Phils are better off by resigning Schwarber or if they would have made their team stronger by not signing him and using the money to sign centerfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger, outfielder Kyle Tucker, or first baseman/DH Pete Alonso. Also ask yourself how many solid players the Phils will have to trade away to match the salary of a player like Ketel Marte.

The Philadelphia Phillies have just signed Kyle Schwarber to an exorbitant contract that will ultimately prove to be an albatross for the team and its fans. It’s not personal – it’s just business, but it’s the kind of business that window dressings like adding Don Mattingly to the bench, the boys in the TV booth, and the Philly news media will not be able to justify, rationalize, or improve any time soon.

Schwarber is a beast, always loved that guy. Reaching 500 homers for him would be amazing, very do-able if he stays healthy. 525 might be very reachable if he can manage a couple more 45+ seasons in 2026/27.

Pirates waited until the Phils offer was known and offered just a little less just so they can tell their fan base “we tried”. Seriously though there was no chance he’d have signed with Pittsburgh. The Pirates interest in him wasn’t to try and finally invest in winning, it’s to sign a side show attraction to draw some fans in. Trying to win would be to jump on trying to land guys like Cease and Bichette to go along with Schwarber.
