Red Sox Have Shown Interest In Seranthony Domínguez

By Darragh McDonald | December 10, 2025 at 4:14pm CDT

The Red Sox are known to be looking for bullpen upgrades. According to Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo of MassLive, right-hander Seranthony Domínguez is one specific name they have checked in on, though the report suggests nothing is imminent.

Domínguez, 31, has been a leverage reliever in the big leagues for several years now. He has generally done a good job of missing bats and keeping the ball on the ground but has also shown some control problems.

Overall, Domínguez has 306 big league innings on his track record, having allowed 3.50 earned runs per nine. His 10.5% walk rate is a bit worse than par but his 45.1% ground ball rate is a few ticks better than average while his 27.9% strikeout rate is quite strong. He has racked up 40 saves and 78 holds along the way.

2025 was a fairly extreme season for him, a year in which he added a splitter and a curveball to his arsenal. It was split between the Orioles and Blue Jays, as he was amusingly traded in between games of a doubleheader between the two. He was on the Baltimore roster in the first game of the contest and then pitched against them as a Blue Jay in the second game. He finished the year having tossed 62 2/3 innings with a 3.16 ERA. His 13.8% walk rate was the highest of his career but his 30.3% strikeout rate was also better than normal for him.

Despite the lack of control, Domínguez held a key role in the Toronto bullpen through their playoff run, with mixed results. He did post a strong 3.18 ERA over 12 postseason appearances, but he walked 11 opponents and only struck out 10. He seemed to benefit from a .115 batting average on balls in play and 91.5% strand rate in that small sample of work under the bright lights.

For the Red Sox, their bullpen needs aren’t desperate. Their relief group had a collective 3.41 ERA in 2025, second only to the Padres. But even the best teams can find a way to make an addition and bump out their eighth-best arm.

At the beginning of the offseason, MLBTR predicted Domínguez could earn an $18MM deal over two years. The relief market has moved fast, with guys like Edwin Díaz, Devin Williams, Phil Maton, Kyle Finnegan, Emilio Pagán, Raisel Iglesias, Gregory Soto, Ryan Helsley and others off the board. That leaves Robert Suarez, Brad Keller, Pete Fairbanks, Tyler Rogers, Sean Newcomb and Domínguez as some of the better names still out there.

The Red Sox may not have huge payroll flexibility but they also have plenty of other balls in the air. They are looking for big lineup upgrades and may be able to trade controllable starting pitching. It’s also possible they could use their corner outfield surplus on the trade block. If they add a big bat at first base, then maybe Triston Casas is available as well. Amid all of that, adding to the bullpen probably isn’t the biggest priority but they also can’t wait forever with the way the market is moving.

Better stop showing interest and start signing Bregman before the Fenway Tea Party starts.

wbz – Trading for Marte is more important, Bregman doesn’t help improve upon last season’s team.

You are correct, signing bregman only hopefully replaces the numbers that he put up last year. You still need to replace the home runs, lost in the devers, trade. i don’t think biscette will do that, martens may.

The clock is ticking and we’re almost at the eleventh plus hour

Fever, would love Marte but they need a true power bat from the right side. Even with Papi, there was Manny and then Bogie and Pedie. Heard on FAN that Alonso was moving and once they said five years, I knew it was the O’s. Shocked he got that many years. Makes me think the Sox are signing no one significant and all moves will be by trade. Someone will give Bregman more years. Wondering on who that bat will be…

dewey – I’m more than ever convinced the Sox will sign Suarez and/or Bregman.

I still think Bo stays in Toronto.

I don’t see Murakami coming to Boston.

FPG – I dont see Bichette leaving Toronto. To me, its the wait on how far Suarez will fall, because I think he’s gonna be our signing.

That said, I can see the Sox signing any one of the three Japanese players. It grows the brand.

I dont see the Sox going to 37yo with Marte. Nor do they want to pay the prospect haul that Arizona will want

sad – I hope you’re right, I’ve been saying all offseason Suarez checks off all the boxes …. especially the one marked “Must be cheap”. They are probably hoping he’d accept 2 years, but they could agree to give him 3 years max. I’m sticking with my $60-$80M projection.

Everybody is expecting Bo to stay in Toronto.

How are they gonna sign Murakami or the other two guys if the Sox are unwilling to go more than 3 years? I don’t see that happening, they aren’t leaving Japan for just a 2-3 year contract. I think they’ll want 4 years minimum. Hell Yoshida got 5 years!

dewey – Thanks! Yep we’ve known that all along. So because of the dumb longterm contracts they’ve given in the past (Story, Sale, Price) they are gonna refuse to give them going forward? That means one of three things will happen:

          1) Massive overpays on short-term contracts
          2) Lottery ticket signings
          3) Coming off injury and/or bad performance signings

Maybe that’s why Breslow didn’t want any part of Bregman last offseason and hasn’t pulled the trigger yet this season? Not a chance Bregman will accept less than 4 years, let’s see who blinks first.

FPG – at the beginning of the off season I was pretty convinced that one of the japanese players were coming. Corner infielders, a good addition to the FSG brand and young enough. I’ve been less and less optimistic.
Now that I saw the article Dewey put out confirming what we all already knew, I dont think they’re coming at all.
Honestly, I would like Suarez because he’s from Venezuela, and maybe helps Abreu take the next step forward. But, not sure i see that either

Sad – I saw a fascinating post today.

Red Sox payroll increased by just $9M from 2018 to 2025.

Meanwhile over that same period their valuation increased from $2.8B to $4.8B

And they are crying poverty, LOLOLOL!!

Sad – It’s not just ownership being cheap, I’m really beginning to think the Joon article was true about Breslow. He is simply overmatched.

Quote from the VERY credible Ken Rosenthal: “The Red Sox have shown repeated interest in reacquiring catcher Kyle Teel, but the White Sox have no interest in trading him and have shut down every inquiry.”

How embarrassing is it that Breslow so quickly realized trading Teel was a HUGE mistake – and many of us here have been saying that since the trade!

Also, why didn’t Breslow properly shop around Devers and bring back what the team truly needed – at least one slugger to replace his power? Oh yeah, because Breslow’s little feelings were hurt and he wanted to show who was boss. He rushed the trade because of his own personal feelings, rather than doing what is best for the team. The team was winning, they were on a roll, Breslow just wanted to be on the West Coast when it went down to avoid the media crush and fan backlash.

How hilarious will it be if Raffy is healthy next year and blasts 40+ bombs while playing 140 games of solid defense at first base. And he’s getting paid LESS than Schwarber and Alonso.

And with all the talk defense at third, they’ll probably sign suarez 17 per × 3 for 1b and dh. Mayer to 3rd

Fever- Will Marte’s bat replacing Bregman make a big enough difference? It seems like we need another power bat to step up from last year’s offense. At this point, Bregman seems out of reach based on what Alonso got. Maybe you will get your wish and they will sign Suarez.

Uncle – Reports are coming in that teams aren’t hot for Breggy Beer Man because of his asking price. I think the injury and the poor performance after the first few weeks of the season decreased his value, but he’s still pushing for a contract similar to what he wanted last offseason.

If Abreu can stay healthy and Casas returns to pre-rib-injury form, they’d pick up at least 30 homeruns right there. And Roman should contribute at least 25 homers. But yeah, it would be nice to have Suarez coupled with Marte.

They could take a shot at Murakami, but he’s a big risk IMO if reports are true that he can’t hit high velo pitches.

Agree with wanting Marte, but I don’t think you’re giving giving him enough credit.

        2023-2025 Marte:
        89 HRs
        .519 SLG
        47.6% HardHit%

        2023-2025 Bregman:
        69 HRs
        .450 SLG
        40.5% HardHit%

Far more pop than Bregman in recent years.

Besides Devers, The Sox haven’t paid or bought a multi-year contract that would take a position player past the age of 34 since 2018 and Devers was homegrown. This is a team core philosophy. They’re not going to stray from it by paying Ketel Marte $100m+ and then also have to trade Major league players and prospects for Marte through age 37. Breslow may be PBO but he is only one voice that sits at the decision making round table headed by ownership that deals with decisions like “core philosophy” and this has been in place for almost the last decade.

At 27… Bichette for 6 or 7 years makes sense otherwise the only free agency contracts the Sox sign will be short term deals.

Road – If the Sox get desperate enough, like they did last year with Crochet, then they will pay up for Marte.

They WILL acquire a power hitter if Breggy walks, they KNOW if they don’t and nobody hits more than 25 homers they will get roasted for trading Raffy …. and that’s the last thing they want to see happen.

Another off season of lip service from the powers that be in the Red Sox front office. There will be at least 1 more year of lip service like this again during the ‘26 ‘27 off season. Besides Rafael Devers, The Red Sox haven’t paid or bought a multi-year contract that would take a “position” player past the age of 34 since 2018 and Devers was homegrown (Story has a club option for age 35 so if the club was to pick it up it be since 2022 instead of 2018). This is a team core philosophy. They’re not going to stray from it. Breslow may be PBO but he is only one voice that sits at the decision making round table headed by ownership that deals with decisions like “core philosophy” and this has been in place for almost the last decade. Breslow will have to bring any deal or trade for a player being payed and exceeding age 34yr to the table and make his case to get approval to get it done. I’m not saying it can’t be done but I don’t think he has all the pieces in place to get it pushed through yet. Because of this I think that leaves the 25yr Murakami left as the only real fit. Maybe Bichette but not if he wants more than 7yrs. Maybe Bregman if he wants to come back on a three year deal. Another dream.

I’m pretty sure that any team wanting Bichette for only 6 or 7 years would have to blow away the competition by 5-10 AAV per year.

Hard to imagine he doesn’t get 8+ given his age. And if he’s willing to take some deferrals, I’d be all for it.

Marte is fine player but I’m very suspicious about how he would hold up in Boston. Sensitive guy. Emotional guy. Needs days off guy. Helluva hitter when he plays. But I’ll take Bregman even though the stats may suggest otherwise. Give me the clubhouse leadership and the championship pedigree. The reviews from all of the young players last year were glowing along with everyone from coaches and management. I’m in the minority in wanting Casas to get one more shot at 1B as well and MM can cover 2B and slide to SS or 3B whenever needed.

They have several starters who won’t pitch deep into games, so building a bullpen beyond high leverage RPs and not paying big for a legit #2 via a trade could make sense if they also address infield defense and still add two bats,….one has to be right-handed,

Curious to see if Texas is interested in moving on from Seager while he still has value, and what their level of interest is in Duran.

        Yes, I think they will.

#1, I don’t think the Alonzo deal will work out well for the Orioles. Glad the Red Sox didn’t go there.

I’m not even sure if a guy who hit .197 recently is worth the contract he received?

Spending like drunken sailors at night doesn’t usually work out well when the sun comes up.

Just my two cents, but I trust what the Sox are doing. Look at all this excellent youth that has come up. That’s a great sign.

Plugging in the proper veterans without giving up 4 young guys for the number one arm in the league is also intelligent.

Give the off season a little time. Let the desperate Orioles overpay. Let the Phillies overpay for past performance.

Gary – I totally understand you don’t feel you can trust Sox management, but when Breslow said a righthanded slugger is needed he was actually telling the truth.

So it’s just like when the lights go on in the bar at 2AM …. you either fill the need with whatever is left, or you go without.

I don’t think this team can go without and expect to contend for a title. The only guys that may hit more than 20 are Roman, Abreu and Story. They need a 35+ homer guy, Casas would need to stay healthy to be that guy and that’s a huge question mark.

Think of the extra pressure on the pitching staff if the offense doesn’t come through.

I would say if they don’t get two additional good bats that would be bad.

No, Breslow was not lying when he said we need boppers.

Again, Alonzo’s off the board and Schwarber’s off the board. Does that mean the off season is over?

          No, it doesn’t.

But if this is the team on opening day, then I’ll be just as disappointed as you are and probably more so.

Very disappointed that Alonso is not coming to Boston. Of course I wanted Naylor to begin with ,but Alonso was my next choice. Baltimore is making a lot of noise,if they can secure a front of the rotation pitcher (Framber) they will be another tough team to deal with in the AL east. Power bats are getting light on the free agent market. Your guy Suarez and Bellinger both fill needs for the Sox. I like Bregman over Suarez ,but Suarez being cheaper and for less years, I think that’s the way the Sox are going to go. Marte is very interesting. I would still like them to acquire a #2 pitcher (Peralta, Ryan),even if it cost them one of the prize young hurlers. I know the Twins say they aren’t dealing him ,but things change. The AL east is shaping up to be extremely tough.

Yes my prediction of Suarez is looking better and better, even if the Sox bring back Bregman.

I don’t see Bellinger as a possibility at all.

Without question the O’s will land a solid SP, maybe Ranger Suarez too. Giolito is still out there, Pivetta is available ;O)

I’m starting to feel like Bregman made a mistake not opting in on the final 2 years of his contract. $40 million with deferred . With 2 good seasons he could have then signed a very nice deal in his age 34 season. A 2 or 3 year deal to make up for what he did not get . He is not going to get anywhere near his previous AAV. What do you think??

          cdc – hi !

You’re making me defend Bregman and Boras. LOL!

He did the right thing by opting out of the contract.

He used a 6-week hot streak at the start of the season to make the All-Star Team and finish the season with his highest OPS, SLG and BA since 2019. That’s what other teams will look at, not the fact he sucked after May 7th and missed a ton of games because of injury.

Chances are he will regress the next couple years, and/or miss a lot more games to injury, so waiting until Age 34 to try and get another longterm contract would be highly risky.

You can’t go by just AAV because that always depends on length of contract. Some teams will tack on a couple more years to lower the AAV, as the Padres did with Xander.

So you have to look at total contract NPV, and I believe he will get at least $130M this offseason. He will not do better than that by waiting 2 years.

Health is always a major concern. I don’t believe he will regress that much in the next couple years. Without the injuries he may even be able to maintain a 4+ war . Then at age 34 look for that 3 year deal ( like E. Suarez this year) to make up the $$$. If he did not opt out he would be assured of being in a place he wants to play in (Boston). If he wanted to play in Detroit he probably would have accepted last years offer from them. $175 m for 6 , I believe. I think the money he could have banked by opting in and then signing a contract 2 years from now will be very close . I could be wrong,it would not be the 1st time.

Seen a report the Sox are interested in Kyle Teel. Funny. Would love to know exactly what was going down in the room when those trade talks were going down. We’ve discussed this before. Chicago with 2 young ,top flight catching prospects. Losing out on his services is going to hurt. I would still make the trade, but, prospects at the catching position like him are rare.

Schwarber was going back to the Phillies, no matter what. So missing on Alonso — without knowing what moves remain to be made—warrants this kind of fury? I’ve lived in Philly, New York and Washington and have never seen such negativity and trashing of the home team and its management as exists here. “Breslow is garbage.” “Henry won’t ever spend money.” Oh really. We all just imagined them getting and extending Crochet last year, signing Bregman and Chapman (and locking Chapman up for 2026). Why can’t fans be disappointed without completely trashing the competence and integrity of the team’s management? Every team kicks the tires on many free agents. Most don’t have the resources of the Dodgers, Yankees and Mets—or even Blue Jays. Go back and see how much David Ortiz earned in his glory years. Were the Sox cheap back then? Not signing Betts was a disaster. Lowballing Lester also a mistake. But Breslow had nothing to do with either of those decisions. Until we see the roster that comes together at the start of spring training, I’m willing to give Breslow the benefit of the doubt. Those leading “the sky is falling” crowd only make it harder to get quality deals done.

I agree with what you’re saying, but there is also an understandable distrust in Sox ownership because of their behavior predating last year’s offseason. They straight up lied to the fan base (full throttle). This trickles down to Breslow as he is just seen as the errand boy for the billionaires. It also speaks to a larger rift societally speaking between the people who have endless money but choose to hoard rather than help the many. But looking objectively at the moves and extensions given in the last year, they are obviously building a winning team.

What good is getting Crochet if they’re not going to do what’s necessary and pair him with another top of the rotation arm or get the impact bats the lineup desperately needs?

Crochet pitched a gem in the first wild card game. Then Cora decides to play game 2 like a must win, pulls Bello early and backfires. Then the offense goes radio silent in game 3.

So another top of the rotation arm and some impact bats are desperately needed or they will have another disappointing season.

And how does people complaining make it harder to get deals done? I’m pretty sure comments here have no impact on Breslow’s ability to do his job.

Another off season of lip service from the powers that be in the Red Sox front office. They won’t sign any of the free agent starting pitchers that have the qualifying offer attached, they won’t $pend at the top of the market for the bat(s) that they so desperately need, but it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to watch them throw away more $$$ on posting fees for a player. There will be at least 1 more year of lip service like this again during the ‘26 ‘27 off season. The Red Sox true colors are shining brightly, you just need to put your shades on to tone it down so that you can really see what is happening inside Fenway and with those who occupy the seats around the decision making table.

I’m tired of the “interested in” or “have shown interest” when it comes to Red Sox news.

Henry needs to open up his purse & tell Bres to go get shyt done. The beating around the bush, dancing in circles & sifting through the dumpster is not getting things done!

Get a true #2 pitcher which will bump one of the 5-8 pitchers to the pen, 3B & 1B/DH (run producing bats). Get busy trading or spending but get a team fielded that can & will get us somewhere. Time to step up!!!
