Here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today:
1. Giants 40-man roster moves incoming:
The Giants signed right-handers Adrian Houser and Jason Foley to major league deals yesterday, and in doing so created in a logjam on their 40-man roster. San Francisco’s roster was already at capacity before those signings, so they’ll need to make a pair of corresponding moves in order to finalize those additions. Those transactions could be simply designating two other players for assignment, but it’s also possible that the Giants could look to work out a trade of some kind that clears 40-man roster space.
2. Market for lefties heating up:
While the bullpen market has been buzzing virtually the entire offseason, the market for specifically left-handed relief pitching had been a bit quieter until recently. As of early last week, Gregory Soto was most notable lefty to sign, but that dam has broken. Hoby Milner and Tyler Alexander signed late last week, and things picked up further yesterday with a trio of agreements: Caleb Thielbar returned to the Cubs after a strong rebound season, Drew Pomeranz signed with the Angels, and the Reds landed Caleb Ferguson. With that group off the board, the most notable lefties still on the market include Sean Newcomb, Taylor Rogers, Justin Wilson and Danny Coulombe.
3. Posting windows for Song, Murakami nearing their end:
When international players are posted for MLB teams, they’re given a limited window during which to sign. That window lasts 30 days for players coming over from the KBO, while NPB players have 45 days. Two such players are having their windows draw to a close in the next few days: KBO infielder Sung Mun Song, who will need to sign by December 21 at 4pm CT, and NPB slugger Munetaka Murakami, who will need to sign by December 22 at 4pm CT.
Murakami is by far the more well-known player, heralded for his youth and prodigious power despite concerns about his contact ability. He should land a healthy multi-year deal in free agency, though his camp has kept things very quiet to this point. Song hasn’t garnered as much fanfare but is coming off a pair of terrific seasons, wherein he combined to his .327/.397/.524 with a 10.5% walk rate and just a 14.3% strikeout rate.

So while I haven’t been shy the last couple of years with my want of Murakami for the Yanks, lately I’ve been convinced the less hyped and most likely cheaper Okamoto might be the better (perfect?) fit. Can play 1st-3rd very well and overall might be the better hitter if only with a bit less power. So let’s start getting these postings going, I want to see at least one Japanese player on the Yankees again. Matsui and Tanaka are two of my favorite all-time Yankees. Let’s do this!
Sal – Irabu isn’t included in your favorites list? ;O)
You guys mention those dudes like I don’t know every deal isn’t a guarantee. I’ve been a huge Japanese culture guy (SalZILLA lol) my entire life. I literally knew Matsui from a fun spot in a Godzilla movie before his move to the Yanks lol. I love Ohtani. I love littering my fantasy teams with Japanese and Korean players. Just always dig their drive and work ethic.
But yeah Matsui and Tanaka are the two I remember and cherish because their contributions far outpaced the couple of players that didn’t pan out. So I’m always open to bringing another player in from there.
And Feve, meant that more as a response to DJTfjbTDSlgb. I know yours was a playful dig.
Yoshida almost won my finals for me last season!
Sal – I’ve been the biggest supporter of Yoshida since Day One! When he’s fully healthy I expect him to rake like he did in Japan.
In general I love the Japanese culture too. Respect, honor, dignity, humility, politeness, class ….. the world needs more of that.
100% and we need their 7-11 and McDonald’s happy meals lol.
Fever-Irabu? Yikes! God rest his soul. Are your Red Sox trying to resign Bregman or no? Hearing you guys might want to sign Bichette? I don’t want Bregman or Bichette. Still hoping Bellinger comes back. 🙏
Cap – Oh wow, I totally forgot he passed away :O(
Sox won’t give Bregman what he is currently asking for, I don’t see him returning unless he lowers his demands to 3-4 years.
I can’t see the Sox signing Bo, in fact I can’t see him leaving Toronto.
Red Sox are one of only two teams (Rockies) who haven’t signed ANY free agents to an MLB contract yet. I’m sticking with Suarez on a 2-year deal.
Sounds like Imai is choosing between the Yankees or the Cubs. Hearing the Phillies are now out of the running. A battle between my two favorite teams here. 🙏 I win either way!
Read that, too, 99. Somehow I keep thinking it’ll be the Cubbies here though I think I picked him for like the Padres.
Sal- it’s definitely an interesting question where Imai ends up. You want King back? Hearing it’s the Yankees or the Red Sox. If Cubs lose out on Imai, they could try for the Kinger. But hearing he wants the east coast, where he’s from.
Yeah always liked King, definitely interested in a reunion. But I kinda wonder if we should focus the money on bats and pick up a cheaper SP option like a Bassitt.
Bassitt is definitely interesting, especially if he is cheaper than King. That’s something they should think about. Great call. Imai looks great. Hopefully we sign him.
@Salzilla
Yankees have no money, according to Hal. They’ll be the TB Rays in the near future.
Bridges were sold on less BS, York.
I thought I read on here Rodgers signed on with a team already?
Tyler signed with the Blue Jays but his brother hasn’t yet
That was Tyler Rogers, the twin brother.
Tyler Rodgers,Taylor Rodgers, Buck Rodgers,Kenny Rodgers,Ginger Rodgers etc etc .. I should’ve known better.
Yeah right here with Toronto mlbtraderumors.com/2025/12/blue-jays-designate-jus…
It’s a tale of 2 Rogers (brothers who were both FA’s), right.
“Roger, Over.
Over, Dunn.
Dunn, Roger.
Over, Roger.
Roger, Dunn.”
Coming to you from Rogers Centre!
The other Rogers, lefty
Toronto signed Taylor Rogers brother the Right handed pitching Tyler Rogers..
i’m still wondering how the twins throw with different arms
They aren’t conjoined twins
lol… okay
If they were conjoined they would have to throw with different arms
Conjoined twins should play in Minnesota. Also wondering if they would take up one or two roster spots?
Haha
wv – The same way the Hensel twins do?
There are LHPs that are on the trade market too, like Jojo Romero.
The Yankees really got to come away with Bellinger or Tucker in free agency. Signing Bichette for 6,7, or 8 years make zero sense. Yanks like Bellinger for 6 years. If Mets or Dodgers 7 or 8 years, he might be go there. Can’t go wrong with Tucker $380-390 million for 10 years, coming off injury in 2025. That would be a heist.
Can Murakami play a suitable 3B?
No, 1B maybe
Anyone who lands Murakami, could strike gold. Media has been mentioning his swing and miss rate being high. Ohtani had a higher rate in Japan! I would love for my Yankees to land he and Imai, put Rice behind the plate and use Wells as trade bait.
Why trade Wells who is a much better defensive catcher? This offense can carry his low bat average/obp. Why not try him at 3B (Murakami) until we clear Stanton off the books.
Hearing he can. I think Murakami would be better at lst base though. Remains to be seen.
