The Braves announced this afternoon that infielder Ha-Seong Kim suffered a hand injury while in South Korea and underwent surgery to repair a torn tendon in his right middle finger. The procedure was performed today in Atlanta and the expected recovery time is 4 to 5 months, per the announcement. MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports that Kim suffered the injury after falling on ice.
It’s a brutal revelation for the Braves, who claimed Kim off waivers from the Rays back in September in hopes of luring him to Atlanta for the 2026 season as well. While he opted out of his player option for the 2026 campaign, he eventually re-signed with the Braves on a one-year, $20MM deal back in December. Bringing Kim back into the fold was one of their biggest splashes this winter, alongside the addition of Robert Suarez to the back of the bullpen. Kim also figured to address perhaps the biggest weakness of their entire roster; the team’s 54 wRC+ at shortstop last year was dead last in the majors, and their 0.4 fWAR at the position bested only the Guardians and Rockies. When healthy, Kim is a reliable three-to-four win player thanks to his roughly league average bat and phenomenal defense.
Unfortunately, “when healthy” is becoming an increasingly key phrase when discussing Kim’s career. He suffered a torn labrum in his right shoulder in August of 2024 that brought his time with the Padres to an abrupt end, leaving him sidelined for the stretch run and the Padres’ efforts to get past the eventual World Champion Dodgers in a hotly contested NLDS that San Diego ultimately lost in five. The Rays had enough faith in his talent to sign Kim to a two-year guarantee last winter, even knowing that he would miss the first few months of the season while rehabbing from surgery on his aforementioned torn labrum. That gamble did not pay off. Kim didn’t make his Rays debut until after the All-Star break last year as recovery from surgery took longer than expected, and and wound up heading back to the injured list multiple times due to back and calf injuries.
Kim seemed like a lock to pick up his 2026 player option when he was claimed off waivers by Atlanta, but a solid showing in 24 September games with the Braves convinced him to test the market. That proved to be a savvy decision, as the Braves ultimately brought him back on a higher salary than he would’ve made had he simply accepted his $16MM option. While the deal cost Atlanta an extra $4MM, it was easy to see why they’d be willing to make that bet on a player with Kim’s talent, particularly given their needs at shortstop and the thin market around the rest of the roster. Kim could certainly help to rejuvenate what was a sluggish offense last year by providing a massive upgrade over incumbent shortstop Nick Allen, who was traded to Houston earlier this winter.
They’ll now have to wait to feel that impact until near the end of the first half, at the earliest. The early end of Kim’s recovery timeline would put him back on the field in mid-May, but he well might need extra time to ramp up after missing all of Spring Training and spending much of last year on the injured list as well. In the meantime, the Braves have utility man Mauricio Dubon to turn to as their everyday shortstop. Dubon is miscast as an everyday regular but should be a decent enough fill-in option. Losing his versatile glove from the bench puts pressure on the rest of the roster, and an Atlanta offense that looked generally complete this morning could now clearly use another addition, even if that player is just a depth option.
Bringing someone like Isiah Kiner-Falefa into the fold would certainly help stabilize things, but after the Braves scaled their payroll up by nearly $50MM this winter (according to RosterResource) with the additions of Kim, Suarez, and Mike Yastrzemski it’s hard to say if there’s room in the budget for even that sort of mid-level signing. The market for shortstop help is exceedingly thin at this point, but perhaps a depth signing like Jorge Mateo could help fill out the roster until Kim returns. Of course, president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos is known for his creativity and could look to explore the trade market for help. Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner has been widely discussed in trade rumors this winter, particularly after the club’s recent signing of Alex Bregman, and has played shortstop well in the past. The Mets have a cadre of infield talent that’s been squeezed out by the Bo Bichette deal, but it’s unclear if the team would be willing to trade someone like Ronny Mauricio or Luisangel Acuna within the division.

Ouch
Yeah “ouch” A’s dodged a bullet as they reportedly offered Kim 44mil over 4 years whew 😅
july
If the A’s got him. He’d just miss about 1/8th of the contract instead of 1/2 of it
Ice is causing injuries everywhere now.
Hopefully it all melts soon forever
Because of course.
This guy keeps costing himself millions
He’s getting his millions without having to play.
How does one get on that train
Have Boras as your conductor. Choo-choo!
Be good at baseball…daddy.
He got a pretty big raise after not really playing last year lol
Find a way to void that deal JFC
how would you void a contract where it sounds like it was a random accident? it’s not like has doing extreme sports…
I think theres two stories to every injury away from baseball.
How the hell is this guy signed for $20m on a one year?
He actually fell on the ice while washing his car…
He should lose his pay just for washing his own car
why would he be washing his car in the ice
He wasn’t washing his car in the ice. Nobody is that dumb ..not even dumb ballplayers.
Contracts are guaranteed, fathead.
Uncle – If he got injured doing something like figure skating for instance, it’s usually a violation of his contract.
@fever — True. We’ll see if he was figure skating and if there’s video…should be entertaining since figure skaters wear such cute little outfits.
Charlie – Yeah if there’s video of him getting injured on a Triple Axel attempt, he’s screwed.
Uncle,
I didn’t want to see him in a tutu.
I guess you didn’t the site memo about insults
Man 3,
Are you referring to my comment about not wanting to see a man wearing a tutu?
I would sign Luis Rengifo. He can platoon at SS with Dubon. He’s versatile and can play other positions in the infield. One of these days, Rengifo will go 20-20 and bat. 300. I love the guy.
Another – I bet he’s referring to Charlie’s response to Fathead 🤣
Hmm. I didn’t realize contracts bring guaranteed was an insult.
Facts over feelings. :p
Another – I don’t think he realizes Fathead is Fathead’s handle. 😆
Plus, if you’re the third man, as the name implies, are you really the man?
Enquiring minds want to know.
I know a Fathead when I see one.
#saymyname
#sayhisname
@fathead
Have you heard of this new fangled concept called insurance? Braves still lose their SS but not 20 mill,
You don’t know if the Braves had insurance on that contract, BitchySally.
I doubt they do. You’d be more likely to see a policy on a long term deal..
Bivouac-
People assume that everyone has insurance. Just a couple of factors.
1-Teams don’t insure the complete salary. it is typically between 50-80%.
2-There are waiting periods like 90 or 180 days. If a player is injured, you might not start collecting until the 91st day.
3-I don’t know that insurance covers off-the-field injuries.
I’d love to know what the premiums cost.
4- I am whipping myself in penance for my transgression.
Why can’t we just get rid of winter everywhere-Signed a cold Minnesotan.
Tim Walz?
Bullwinkle, who predated Governor Walz, spoke of cruel winters up in Frostbite Falls.
Maybe he hurt it at the Quality Learing Center?
Move to SoCal
Braves injury curse started early this year
It really is unbelievable
Dubon to SS I guess? Maybe pick up a utility guy
Braves now “in on”the Donovan trade too.
Why would they trade for Donovan when they can just sign IKF to play until Kim comes back?
Because he’s IKF.
Rather have IKF and his superior defense and passable bat, than giving up from a thin farm to bring in a guy that doesn’t play ss (aside from 100 or so innings across his career)
….And so it begins
Well there goes 20 million down the drain. Maybe they can get Nick Allen back?
Don’t want him.
I am pretty sure Nicky Lopez is available? Man I truly feel for Braves fan and Kim . Nobody wants to get hurt but 4 to 5 months for a finger to heal? Sounds like a extremely long time ? Hopefully he can bounce back quickly
The Rockies already made the high dollar move to sign Nicky Lopez
Maricio is much better than Allen
Maricio is not on the Braves. Just have to wait til Mets release him in ST.
Mauricio Dubon is though.
Falling on ice is a bit more respectable than playing with drone I guess…
the f was atlanta thinking giving him $20 mil for 1 year?
Same things cubs were when they gave Bellinger 1 year 17.5 mill back when he was released by the Dodgers
You were hoping he could regain his league average offense with decent OBP skills but no power, give you excellent defense at ss, and provide you between 4-6 WAR
That’s just bad luck. Doesn’t mean bad process.
@MLBUmpire: chandler doesn’t understand logical thought process.
paying a .230 hitter who spent most of 2025 injured $20 mil for 1 year is atrocious
Imagine still thinking BA is a valid measure of a player’s worth on the field or just using one season of his performance when he only played a few months after returning from surgery.
Kim has averaged 3.1 WAR in his career. He has 2 seasons over 5 WAR. That caliber of player is worth more than $20 million AAV on a multiyear deal if they are not returning from an injury like Kim.
There is no such thing as a bad 1 year contract.
I like Kim as a player very much so but I’m with you chandl $20 million? But dodgers paying 126 million including tax penalty just seems like a shitload because it is a shitload?
It was AA’s fault. I told him that there was a good chance that Kim would slip on the ice and break his hand. Why o why don’t these GMs listen to me?
And this is why the Cardinals have been patient waiting for the 2B/infielder market to “develop.”
At least it happened in January and not March.
Foreign players should not be allowed to live in their own country during the off-season unsupervised..
Slider or the team can send him in bubble wrap!
You need to up the pay rate then. No chance a sane foreigner is living in America all year for only 20m. 9 months is already 9 months too long.
Get well soon, HSK!
I feel a big trade coming but not for an Ace pitcher
Most people don’t want a new Ace anyways for some reason (myself not included)…but there’s no replacement to trade for, they’ve already made their big acquisition in Dubon which has now become paramount. I wouldn’t mind IKF, he just had a good season with the Pirates.
“Most people don’t want a new Ace anyways.” Nope. Just don’t want one no matter the cost like you do. I—won’t speak for everybody— don’t want to see the Braves decimate the upper levels of the system by trading their top pitching prospects or go into the 3rd luxury tax level to trade for an “Ace.” I want the Braves to keep developing the excellent arms they’ve already got in the system. Keep Waldrep. Keep Ritchie. Keep Murphy. Keep Fuentes. Keep Caminiti. Keep the ace they already have—-Schwellenbach. IKF’s xwoba was .261 last season. Worse glove than Allen and a bat almost as bad. Pass. Might as well re-sign Luke Williams to back up Dubon for the 2 months Kim’s likely to miss. Neither of Williams or IKF can hit, but Williams will cost close to the minimum.
Braves absolutely need a stud starting pitcher NOW!!. Gotta know Acuña is good as gone in three years… probably re-setting under luxury tax again in ’28 unless we get a new CBA deal. We need to look at this like it’s a two year window and make it happen. We’re not winning anything relying on Elder and unproven arms accumulating innings.
Sale is a “stud.” Strider and Schwellenbach were “unproven arms” when they came up. Waldrep looked pretty good in his dozen starts. Every pitcher is an “unproven arm’ at one point in their career. The Braves have several “stud” starters and good bottom of the rotation depth at the ML and AAA level. They need the same thing every ML team needs from their pitching—-good health. I’m all for the Braves to improve when they can, but only at reasonable cost and w/as little damage to their future as possible. Luckily AA seems to operate w/the same mindset most of the time.
No one wants to accept the fact we need a legit starter. Sometimes we focus too much on the ‘what-ifs’ that may contribute in a few seasons which i get, but then we ignore the current season while we still have a window open for a world series.
And yes @Outfield Acuna is a good as gone, the Kyle Tucker signings was a unfortunate reminder….If Atlanta doesn’t do Atlanta things and let Acuna walk for nothing, this should be his last season. Can get a big haul for him next season. If they wait one more season they’ll get way less.
How much longer will Sale be a ‘stud’…this year… possibly next year we don’t know. Waldrep is unproven. Not sure I would still put Strider in stud territory with 100mph a memory.
Braveshomer…I’m with you on Acuña..he would bring a haul and we should trade him rather than let him go for a draft pick.
The Braves hold TWO $17M team options on Acuna for the 2027/28 seasons. Even if the Braves just keep him for the next 3 seasons of team control for the $51M he’ll be owed, they’ve got a top 10 player for 3 years at a price (much) less than half of Tucker or Bichette’s cost. He also won’t “walk for nothing.” They’ll offer him a QO and get a comp pick even if they don’t deal him. By your logic, the Mets and Dodgers should deal Bichette and Tucker now because they only have them for 3-4 years (and they really don’t because of the opt outs in their terrible contracts.)
Yes Outfield…just look at the Soto package the Nats got. I’ve always considered Soto on the same career trajectory as Acuna and Acuna is much better imo. 2 immediate starters and 2 high end prospects far outweighs any 1 QO comp draft pick.
Two more seasons with Acuña would be my long term strategy… we’re probably not contending in ’28 if we re-set under the tax anyway. Why would you let Acuña walk away for a comp pick when you could get a haul in a deal? Makes no sense.
@Nash — at that rate, give Nacho a chance to be a IF and get him some semi-regular ABs. Not sure how much more he has to prove in MiLB, but this could be his last shot on the club.
It would be interesting to see what Profar still can do at SS. Not suggesting, just interested.
RunDMC…hard no on either Nacho or Profar at SS.
Acuna’s history of knee injuries probably makes him worth less than Soto was at the time he was dealt by the Nats. Soto was also only 3 months shy of his 24th birthday when the Nats dealt him to the Padres. Acuna turned 28 this past December. I agree it’s a no brainer that what the Braves could get for Acuna in trade is better than a comp pick, but the possible trade return isn’t necessarily worth more than the next 3 years of high end value he brings to the Braves lineup if he’s kept. If you really believe what you keep saying about their WS window, why would you want them to deal the player who brings the most value to the roster? You want an “Ace” who’ll pitch 160-180 innings but not a consistent MVP candidate who’ll play almost every day (w/good health luck)? Braves shouldn’t consider dealing him until after the next 2 years—if then.
After two years is my suggestion…though every year you wait the potential haul gets less and less.
@RunDMC: I get what you’re saying about the money on Williams or Nacho, but haven’t the Braves already shown they don’t believe that Nacho’s a viable option at SS? They haven’t played him at the position in Atlanta or Gwinnett since his disastrous showing there in his ML debut in 2024. They’ve played him a bit at 2B when Albies was injured, but for the most part he’s been limited to 3B at both Gwinnett and Atlanta. They did get him a few starts at SS in the Arizona Fall League this past season, but imo they did so as a last measure of trying to show other teams he has value as a utility player. He doesn’t have Williams glove at the middle infield positions, but he’s not quite as horrific w/the bat as Williams. Yeah—I just damned him w/faint praise w/that comparison lol. I’m more interested in seeing what White could do at backing up SS than Nacho.
They already have 2 studs in Sale and Schwellenbach, albeit Schwelly is coming back from an arm injury. And Strider was one before his surgery. Who knows if he’ll get back to that level, though
IKF is a consummate pro and a leader on the field. He’s no star but he would provide good enough defense (though he doesn’t really have the arm for ss) and enough singles to keep rallies going. Could do much worse – don’t see Kim as being that much better. Then once Kim is back you move IKF to super-utility (or trade him to a contender if Braves are out of it).
I wouldn’t mind IKF back on the Pirates, except that it would be seen as a step backwards. (and they already have a similar player named Triolo).
Get Falefa
Sounds like a plan: Falafel for lunch yum
This little bandit has robbed several teams.
The Braves could flip this one in their favor.
How about this trade:
BOS:
Trevor Story (2 yrs / 25M)
Johan Oviedo (1 yrs / 1.5M)
Brandon Neely (A)
-for-
Sean Murphy (3 yrs. / 45M)
Reynaldo Lopez (2 yrs. / 22M)
Braves cut a few million off the payroll and add a pair of good prospects, get a legitimate SS and a respectable SP to replace Lopez.
Boston gets Murphy for a weak-side platoon with Narvaez and takes a risk on two years of Lopez. Lopez was very good in ’24. If he returns strong, he could be very good again. Boston offloads Story’s contract. Rafaella to SS keeps Duran in the OF and gets Yoshida’s bat in the lineup at DH.
Imo, “Boston offloads Story’s contract” and the Braves “get a legitimate SS” don’t belong in the same thought process.
Also don’t believe the Braves would add Story’s $25M salary to the $20M already spent on Kim to the SS position.
Hard no on Story…
It’s a creative idea, but Boston’s not going to move their incumbent shortstop when they already have a paucity of experienced infield options.
Ah, turn this into a Boston topic! All three of you love that.
Buck,
Obviously he forced them to sign the contract.
For 2025 Kim signed a deal with the Rays knowing he was injured at the time. The Braves traded for him knowing he was injured.
After he signed with the Braves this offseason, he slipped on the ice, Something anyone that lives where it snows in winter could have done. Just because you would be willing to fake an injury to get out of working, doesn’t mean Kim did.
What a waste. Have to keep this guy in a padded room at all times until it’s time to play baseball.
Wow
Freak accident unfortunately. Not sure how people are putting it on Kim. Get well soon, dude. Atlanta will figure it out.
As an Astros fan I’m excited Dubon will at least get a crack at a starting job, love that guy.
Really hoping he can be our long lost Omar Infante…he was one of my favorites.
Y’all can have Volpe. We’ll give him to you for a big bag of Life Savers mints. The green bag.
No we won’t lol.
Blue bag?
That must have hurt like heck when he did it.
No doubt.
The good part is he was able to ice it immediately.
You totally need to trade for Javy Baez 😉
Didn’t want him before they signed him, and that hasn’t changed. Awful use of money from AA.
@Howiedizzle — So what would you have done?
– sign another option (Kiner-Falefa, etc.)?
– overpay Bichette to play league-worse SS and hope he improves and/or his offense rights it?
– play recently-acquired Dubon full time at SS, where he’s been mostly mediocre in a full time role throughout his career?
– trade a lot for SS reinforcements (Nico)?
– another option?
They say they may not have the Payroll for IKF, but then suggest giving up player capital and paying an even higher amount to acquire Hoerner. Do they read what they are writing?
A or C. B is not an options since he is a Met now.
Because Nick Allen was the move?
I guess Dubon will be the regular SS til at least june
Lucky for him he signed already
The already slim margin of error for the Braves offense just got slimmer.
Walt Weiss was a SS. He can be a player manager. 😉
Wonder what kind of shape Raffy Belliard is in these days?!
It’s not like he was waxing his Hyundai.
Good job with the proper brand in your reference, I was going with a Kia joke but you beat me to it.
That’s why humans shouldn’t live in places with ice.
That explains why we have been actively working to reduce glaciation.
Chaim Bloom is on the phone ready to listen for offers for Donovan.
This guy makes so much money for doing nothing
At least he wasn’t playing guitar hero. Looking at you Joel Zumaya.
That colossal blunder of not resigning Dansby continues to rear it’s ugly head. Exactly what AA deserves.
Colossal blunder? No other team except CHC was willing to give him anywhere near that 177M.
Granted HSK is out until ~June, but they signed him to a 1/20M deal and they have the same career OPS+.
AA lost Acuña and won a WS. HSK is no Acuña.
@DMC: All true, and remember the awful catching options the Braves had in 21? Going through the Dodgers in the NLCS and winning that WS still gives me hope every season since then.
Wowwwww 2025 alll over again for the Atlanta BandAids
The Rays and their fans would like to offer Atlanta Taylor Walls’ ever decreasing bat and Kim-like glove for a bucket of balls or whatever you want to give us. Trust us. It’s a great deal.
The Braves can sign IKF or Mateo to hold down SS until break. IKF would be a solid add with the potential to cover for Albies if/when he’s hurt, and potentially be a trade piece.
I would put dubon at SS and bring in a utility guy over IKF and Mateo
IKF is the utility guy. He can play 3b, ss, and 2b. Him and Dubon can cover ss or 3b/2b with Albies and Riley injuries. Donovan is too much for a thin farm to get. If they give Ritchie or Waldrep (which stl would undoubtedly demand considering the Kim injury), I’ll consider skipping any subscription.
MLBUmpire..I’m with you…can probably get Mateo cheap… can’t hit much but good defensively. Think Nick Allen with better base stealing skills.
@outfieldfly? I think umpire is against getting Mateo or IKF.
Same O’L Braves
So more consistent winning?
For 0.3 WAR braves paid $20 million for one year. It made no sense even at the time. Would’ve been much better to trade for a player
Nice job ignoring the rest of his career plus the reality that the Rays signed him knowing he was coming off surgery and that the Braves traded for him knowing that.
Kim is a 3 WAR player on average including 2025 and he has multiple 5 WAR seasons in his career. Tell us was better than that on the trade or FA market.
I had him rostered in an NL only keeper league for $7. That’s about all he’s worth when he’s playing. He spends way too much time on the IL, with multiple leg injuries, a torn labrum and a bad back. Now this.
I’m just happy it happened prior to our draft
I am sure he appreciates your kind understanding!
This poor guy had such a high ceiling while with San Diego. Some people just cant handle the emotion and feeling of personal rejection in the non-loyal business of MLB
Phillies and Mets can breathe a sigh of relief.
I think he got hurt watching a girl in a movie doing unspeakable things.
20 mil down the drain. That’s a gut punch.
Nah, it’s still in the sink. Some of the contract was likely insured and Kim will be back by late May/early June. He’ll probably miss less than half the season. It’s an unfortunate accident, but the Braves can still get value from the deal.
Teams can only collect on insurance if the player is out the entire season. Kim will realistically be back May or June
Those big years in 2022 and 2023 are getting to be a distant memory. Who knows if Atlanta will ever get anything out of this guy.
Clown. The next Rendon. Collecting $20mil per year with every injury under the sun
Ha Ha! (Nelson Muntz voice)
If Rengifo starts out, you can trade him closer to the All-Star game. At one time the Yankees contacted the Angels about his availability. I bet you the Yankees sign Rengifo.
So sorry for HSK. Just starting to get healthy after that injury with the Padres in late 2024. Now this. Get well soon.
Dang. He’s good. He’ll never achieve his ability
Whatever happened to that starting pitcher the Braves were going to sign?
They aren’t Simon they blew their wad of cash on Kim. These MLB contracts are ridiculous. If you get hurt off the field they should be voided. If I get hurt off the job my employer won’t pay me. That is the majority of jobs.
Who would be fielding grounders on ice?
