Retired right-hander Ryan Pressly has been hired by the Twins, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. According to Declan Goff of SKOR North, Pressly will be working in player development with both major and minor leaguers.
Pressly, 37, just announced his retirement as a player a couple of days ago. It seems he doesn’t plan to sit by the fire smoking a pipe and reading the paper. He has quickly launched the next stage of his life with this gig with the Twins.
Presumably, Pressly has a lot of wisdom to pass on to younger players after the twists and turns of his baseball journey. He just wrapped up a professional career that lasted almost two decades. He was drafted by the Red Sox with an 11th-round pick back in 2007. He was never really a top prospect and was left unprotected in the 2012 Rule 5 draft, which is how the Twins were able to get him from the Sox.
That proved to be the springboard for him to establish himself as a major leaguer for 13 seasons. The Twins traded him to the Astros in 2018 but that doesn’t seem to have created any sour feelings between him and the organization, based on the fact that he is now rejoining the Twins in a new capacity.
Now he’ll pivot to helping other players who are in the earlier stages of their journeys. This is the second time in a week that the Twins have brought back one of their recently-retired players for a new role. Michael A. Taylor was hired as an outfield instructor a week ago.

Twins get recently retired players. Congrats to Pressly on that!
I saw a post on this a few days ago, and seeing that MLBTR reported it, I know it’s real! Thanks for clarifying.
I wish he was hired to pitch in the bullpen.
Good for him and for the Twins. I like to see former players involved in the game in these capacities.
I’ll handle the fireside sitting and pipe smoking.
same
Both things are still possible, compared to the grind of a 162 game season.
Must be rough grinding to make that life changing money to play a game.
Mercenary- considering a major league roster spot is one of the rarest skills on the planet – yeah, it is a grind to generate billions in entertainment income. This isnt a game.
That was a quick turnaround.
Pressley has a hunka burning love for the Twins and they have a great facility just on the end of lonely Street where when not instructing players, he can walk his hound dog, but don’t be cruel and give it chocolate if you see him, instead meet him for a clam bake at the jungle room!
Think he’ll be wearing his blue Suede cleats?
At 37, there is a chance that Pressly has never sat down to read a paper in his life. His first experience with news was likely AOL or Yahoo, not the newspaper.
Methinks you’re taking it a bit too seriously, old top.
Also I like how your gripe is the newspaper, not the even more anachronistic pipe smoking.
I too was thinking had Ryan been transported back to 1915 where both pipe smoking and newspaper reading were a bit more common.
“Vaping and doomscrolling” sounds less poetic, I guess.
My grandpa was smoking a pipe well into the 1990s.
Gotta have the slippers as well
As far as the pipe goes, it is more anachronistic, but there is not really a defined time for it to stop, unlike newspapers which gradually stopped from the mid 90s to the early 2000s for most people.
BTW, It wasn’t a gripe, it was just a comment. Maybe you are the one that shouldn’t take things so seriously.
Honey – I decided that it was more important to spend time with you and the kids, so I retired today.
Wife – Oh no you don’t…go get a job, mister.
Considering he made 37 million in his career, I’m pretty sure the wife wouldn’t have minded if he’d taken a break.. or are you implying that, regardless of the money, she’d rather have him out of the house working?
heh.
Pressly has left the Rocking Chair !!
Thank You Very Much !!
History would indicate the twins Player Development staff only meets once a week.
Who says he can’t work in player development AND smoke a pipe by the fireplace while reading the paper? And don’t forget the slippers and the robe.
I wouldn’t rule out his getting the itch and ending up on the mound again, as abysmal as the Twins bullpen looks.
“It seems he doesn’t plan to sit by the fire smoking a pipe and reading the paper”
that’s BEAUTIFUL, Darragh.
* weeping XOXO *
The first bit of guidance he should provide the Twins organization is, ‘you shouldn’t have traded me back in 2018, especially, for a big pile of nothing’.
Hes gonna get fat
Everyone deserves a nice comfy layer of velvet
Hes better than any rp on Twins roster right now and hes shuffling papers.
He don’t even enjoy his retirement at least take a year off from baseball
Enjoy your kids ,wife and family.
