The Athletics have traded infielder Max Schuemann to the Yankees in exchange for minor league right-hander Luis Burgos, according to announcements from both teams. Schuemann, who was designated for assignment last week, will take the roster spot of outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez, whose previously reported DFA was announced as the corresponding move for this trade.
Schuemann was bumped off the roster after the A’s claimed Andy Ibáñez. The 28-year-old infielder delivered subpar offensive numbers over parts of the past two seasons with the club. Schuemann has a career 78 wRC+ across 672 big-league plate appearances. He did contribute on the base paths with 21 steals in 23 attempts. Schuemann was a consistent base stealer in the minors, including a 52-theft season across three levels in 2021.
Schuemann’s main intrigue during his time with the A’s was defensive versatility. While the majority of his starts came at shortstop, Schuemann saw time at second base, third base, and all three outfield spots. He ranked in the 95th percentile in Outs Above Average last season.
The swap will give New York a glove-first option to serve as infield depth. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. has dealt with his fair share of injuries. Shortstop Anthony Volpe is currently recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and isn’t expected to be ready by Opening Day.
The Athletics net a 20-year-old right-hander with minimal professional experience. The Yankees signed Burgos as an international free agent in 2024. The entirety of his brief pro career has been spent at the Dominican Summer League. Burgos has a 3.39 ERA across 79 2/3 innings with the DSL Bombers. The solid run prevention results have come with subpar strikeout numbers (8.0 K/9) and control concerns. Burgos has walked 4.7 batters per nine innings. The 20-year-old is likely headed to the lowest levels of the A’s minor league system for more seasoning.

No this is actually really smart because getting a guy who cant hit is going to fix everything
The Yankees were tops in the AL in runs scored, RBI and home runs. They’re returning pretty much the same lineup this season, so I don’t think the addition of Max is going to push the needle either way.
No worries he isn’t making the team anyway. He’s likely goin be released or sent down after Spring Training.
I’m guessing he has options, so a depth move.
Max “Arson” Schuemann
It could also mean the Yankees DFA Oswaldo. He’s coming off an injury and doesn’t really fit the roster anymore
@Ronk325
I don’t think they will choose that route yet. He’s also tradable rather than a DFA.
@Ronk – I think Vivas is the more likely DFA. He’s out of options and won’t make the team out of ST.
Really hope you’re wrong here – Oswaldo has so much upside and was really coming along nicely before injury – contact hitter with pop and frequently had hits in big spots so he’s not afraid of pressure – a solid utility man with decent speed and reliable glove at multiple positions – very good option off the bench or in a long term role if/when someone goes down with injury (Jazz can’t stay healthy, who knows what Volpe looks like off injury)
He was only first added to the 40 man when he was first called up in 2024, and he was not sent down again until 2025. So he should have two options left.
@ Gasu – That’s correct. Roster Resource now has him listed on Yankees with the two.
@Jim Carter You really think Grishham is going to hit 30+ homeruns again? The number is skewed because almost every other team basically got nothing from their Center Fielder. The Yankees offense is much worse then last year
So he hit 30+ HRs because other CFs didn’t?
And the offense is much worse why besides your predicted collapse for Grisham? Oh I imagine it’s because they’re so old, despite having only 3 guys on the 26 man (once Goldy is added) over the age of 31, and 1 of them is Judge who’s collapse is clearly imminent.
Grisham, who is probably the fifth or sixth best hitter in the Yankees lineup might not replicate his performance from last year so the lineup as a whole is “much worse.” Quite possibly the most idiotic comment I’ve ever seen on here
Right, that comment makes no sense.
It was a very bad comment….but I’ve definitely seen worse in the 5+ years I’ve been on here LOL
Yes Im quite aware theyre fielding the same roster as last year
@beg
it’s sad that you think he’s going to have that much effect on the yanks at all.
I dont, the post was sarcasm. Keep up guy
Hahahaha, I’m surprised the Red Sox didnt get to him first
I suppose if they got someone who could hit as well, you would be complaining about giving up too much for a player who will rarely play.
No, i dont think would complain if they got a SS or 3B that can hit. But if you want to make stuff up to feel better go nuts
lol NYY stink
If the shoe fits …
I like the guys whose OBP is higher than their SLG.
Got get ’em Schue…!
Can Jed now extend Nico in piwce? Then Seiya when by spring training 2027 extend PCA and Matthew Busch
Sir, this is a Wendy’s.
There’s a song that is somewhat related that that. Ahah…I don’t wanna assume you listen to Tech N9ne but if you’re interested in the reference he has a song called Colorado with several features on the track. They talk about the devil’s lettuce..
Terrible rapper, awesome social media clout-chaser. He’s a notch above the Island Boys.
I highly disagree. I’m not gonna start an argument here. No point to do that.
Agree to disagree!
It’s like Yankees fans have never heard of depth
Most fans are clueless
Dan
What is this depth thing you speak of? I’ve never heard of such a thing🤣
It’s the distance below the surface.
More of a Rachmaninoff guy myself…
It’s flip the baseball cards time….
“Hello Jerry.” “Hello Schuemann…”
hoping he becomes the best ever yankee shortstop from kalamazoo
Not a terrible depth move. Has MLB experience.
Max will be a forever Athletic for running out on the field after the last game at the Coliseum with an huge Athletics flag and waving it to a cheering crowd. Good luck in New York and beyond.
More of a Guy Caballero insurance piece – so did you drove or did you flew?
Have the Yankees found a RH catcher to platoon with Wells? So many scrubs so little time
Sadly no… they been trying for Jeffers for a while. Heim and Sanchez could be options
Versatile defender walk heavy approach. When given extended stretches would struggle. Perfectly decent bench player
Yanks need is a RH hitting catcher that can also play the corner outfield in a pinch. The Pirates have a young catcher from Bedford NY with no real opportunity and they are also in need of a LH batting catcher. How’s about a trade where Yankees send Escarra, Oswaldo Cabrera, and minor league arm for Henry Davis. Davis defense is questionable so there were talks about having him play some corner outfield because of his 70 arm. His swing also has holes in it resulting in a very high I rate but this is the dough not player if you give him 30% of catching duties and maybe utilize him in left field when needed can potentially help offensively as he has big time power.
Davis has been a miserable failure, for the most part. He’s barely been able to stay out of the minors, and most likely wouldn’t have on any other team. He did make some improvements last season, but the Pirates also started playing matchups with him so he wouldn’t look as bad, in the hopes someone might take the bait and trade for him.
Beyond that, why give up all that for a failed prospect, rather than keep THREE reasonably talented players they already have at C with loads of (so far) cheap team control, and an outfield without enough playing time for everyone on the roster already… by trading from limited infield depth? I really don’t understand the logic here.
This kid was overrated as a “sleeper” for various peripheral metrics when he came up, and Cashman likes seeing what he can get out of those guys before they disappear from the league.
It’s paid off plenty of times. It costs a million or three or a lottery ticket from the minors, and they get a chance to see if there was any real reason they were drooling over him when a different team drafted them.
Personally, I think this is a waste of time. Of the borderline-useful players that premiered around the same time whose name starts like the middle of a sneeze, I’d take Schneeman (Indians) over Schuemann, but he can pick it, so why not?
Still trying to decipher on why Cashman signs players, DFA’s them with such regularity?
Because that’s what all the teams do (Who do you think is cutting all the guys he picks up off waivers?) as they sort through the bottoms of their rosters. It’s just kind of the job of the GM.
Max “Really Small” Schuemann is a great-nephew of the old timey Phillies great Rick “Really Big” Schu. Not surprisingly they are very similar as baseball men except that Max is a little fast versatile defensive whiz with size 6 feet who can’t hit a lick while Rick is a lumbery slow moving corner infield type whose glove is made of concrete whose size 18 feet are stuck in cement but could hit that ball a country mile every now and again.
This is so when fans say he does nothing he can say that’s not true.
Yankees collecting some interesting bench pieces
Thrilling
At some point every & all utility player’s in the MLB will either be traded for or signed to by Cashman. He trades away a young prospect with good minor league numbers for a 29yr old utility player with a career batting average of .192. Someone please explain to me?
