We never got “The Opener” today… Where are the three things to watch for today?
The number of soft tissue injuries in baseball is crazy. As a former track athlete and coach, I watch for it – these guys sit in the dugout or stand in the field and do not stretch, then suddenly go all out running the bases or chasing a fly ball. This risk is compounded by increased emphasis on bulk/muscle. Not at all surprised by the huge # of pulled hammies, rib cages, calves, etc.
Guys aren’t stretching or at least limbering up on the on-deck circle, they are timing the pitcher. They aren’t doing it in the field during down time and between pitches. They aren’t doing it on the bench.
Probably can’t prevent Mountcastle breaking his foot running the bases but you can cut down the injuries by staying loose. Especially in cold weather.
