AL West Notes: Rangers, Reddick, Kendrys Morales

By edcreech | August 25, 2013 at 4:15pm CDT

On this date 17 years ago, A's outfielder Brian Lesher became the first Belgian to play in a MLB game contributing a RBI single off Andy Pettitte (who went on to win a career-high 21 games and finished second to Toronto's Pat Hentgen in the AL Cy Young voting that year) as Oakland beat the Yankees 6-4. Lesher would go on to play parts of five seasons with the A's, Mariners, and Blue Jays posting a slash line of .224/.275/.380 with nine home runs and 38 RBI's in 288 plate appearances (108 games). To this day, Lesher is the only Belgian ever to appear in a MLB contest. In other news and notes from the AL West:

  • Rangers Assistant GM Thad Levine told Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio (via Bowden on Twitter), if the club is going to make a trade before August 31st (players acquired after this date are ineligible for the post-season), it will be for a starting pitcher.
  • Levine adds (again from a Bowden tweet) the Rangers have been searching the waiver wire actively, but most of the quality players are being claimed before them.
  • A's outfielder Josh Reddick left today's game against the Orioles with discomfort in his right wrist and he thinks it's 50-50 as to whether he lands on the disabled list, reports the San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser. John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group tweets Daric Barton was pulled from Triple-A Sacramento's game after one at-bat and may join the A's to replace Reddick. Slusser isn't surprised Barton would get the call over outfielders Michael Taylor and Michael Choice because Barton was slated to join the team when rosters expand September 1st and he plays first base very well allowing Brandon Moss to move to the outfield (all Twitter links). The A's 40-man roster currently sits at 39, so Barton could be added without a corresponding move.
  • A reunion between Kendrys Morales and the Angels would not be shocking, if the pending free agent doesn't re-sign with the Mariners, tweets the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo. The Mariners acquired Morales, hitting .283/.339/.450 with 17 home runs in 522 plate appearances this year, from the Angels last December for left-hander Jason Vargas.
  • Earlier today, Angels manager Mike Scioscia denied reports he has philosophical differences with GM Jerry Dipoto.

A look back at the original reporting and analysis found on MLBTR this past week:

  • MLBTR was the first to report left-hander Mike Zagurski was signed by the A's to a minor league deal with a September 1 opt-out.
  • Steve Adams presented another Transaction Retrospection with a look back at the Mark Reynolds–David Hernandez trade.
  • Earlier this year, Tim Dierkes posted advice from front office executives to students hoping for a career in baseball operations. In a special follow-up for MLBTR, Ricky Benichak shares his experience working as a baseball operations intern for the Reds.
  • Charlie Wilmoth posited a later Trade Deadline would not have necessarily created more trade activity.
  • Steve asked MLBTR readers which player to clear waivers was the most surprising. More than 26% of you found it hard to believe Justin Morneau passed without a claim.
  • Jeff Todd asked MLBTR readers to rank the midseason moves made by teams in rebuilding mode. The Cubs' aggressive spending on international free agents was ranked the best (33%) while the Mariners, Mets, and Rockies standing pat at the Trade Deadline was viewed as the worst (55%).
  • Steve hosted the MLBTR live chat this week.

Minor Moves: Astros, Ryan Roberts, Doug Mathis

By edcreech | August 18, 2013 at 5:08pm CDT

Here are Sunday's minor moves from around MLB:

  • The Astros will sign first baseman Japhet Amador and outfielder Leonardo Heras from Diablos Rojos in the Mexican League, according to a team press release. The 26-year-old Amador, who is listed at 6'4" and 315 pounds, was hitting .368/.419/.693 with 36 home runs in 449 plate appearances. Heras, 23, was hitting .310/.398/.519. The amounts of their bonuses are unclear.
  • Ryan Roberts has cleared waivers and has accepted the Rays' outright assignment to Triple-A Durham, tweets the Tampa Bay Times' Joe Smith. Roberts was designated for assignment Thursday after hitting .247/.295/.377 with five home runs in 173 plate appearances for Tampa Bay.
  • The Pirates have acquired right-hander Doug Mathis from the Marlins for a player to be named later or cash, tweets Michael Sanserino of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Mathis, who has spent the entire season at Triple-A New Orleans, will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis. Mathis, who last appeared in a MLB game in 2010 with the Rangers, has posted a 3.85 ERA, 6.7 K/9, and 4.2 BB/9 over 114 2/3 innings with the Zephyrs covering 24 games (21 starts).

NL Notes: Mets, Manuel, Wilson, Choo, Abreu

By edcreech | August 18, 2013 at 4:45pm CDT

The Pirates' failure to sign Mark Appel with the eighth overall selection in the 2012 draft created a ripple effect where the Mets passed on free agent Michael Bourn and eventually gave playing time to rookie Juan Lagares, writes Joel Sherman of the New York Post. As compensation for not coming to terms with Appel, the Pirates were awarded the ninth overall pick in this past June's draft, knocking the Mets' choice (11th) out of the protected Top Ten. This was an important considersation for the Mets in deciding to not bid on Bourn, explains Sherman, who cites this as a pefect example of "sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make." Here's news from other NL teams who aren't neccessarily going to follow that old adage:

  • Ex-Phillies manager Charlie Manuel told Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio (via Bowden on Twitter) he wants to continue managing and is open to all opportunities, including the Nationals.
  • In that same interview (also from a Bowden tweet), Manuel says the Phillies' plan is to "reload," not "rebuild," needing regular players to fill holes, including adding a starter, and redoing the bullpen.
  • Speaking of the Phillies, little has changed with the radio silence regarding their agreement with Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki, who reported earlier this month the two sides have hit a snag in finalizing their six-year, $48MM deal.
  • Dodgers manager Don Mattingly told reporters, including Ken Gurnick of MLB.com, they will have a better idea at the end of today when Brian Wilson will be activated. GM Ned Colletti was a guest of Bowden and Duquette on MLB Network Radio and said the call should be made in "another day or two" (as quoted by Gurnick's colleague, Andrew Simon). Colletti also explained he signed Wilson because he only cost money, not prospects, and there's a familiarity with him from his days as the Giants' closer. "We think it's a very low-risk, high-reward situation," said Colletti. "He wanted to be here. He has a home in L.A. Rivalry and all that aside — we all know what that's all about — he wanted to restart his career and we're going to give him that opportunity here in the near future."
  • Four years and $60MM is the guess as to the asking price of Reds centerfielder Shin-Soo Choo in free agency this winter, tweets the Cincinnati Enquirer's John Fay. Choo placed fifth in MLBTR's most recent 2014 Free Agent Power Rankings.
  • The Pirates have scouted Cuban first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu in three recent international tournaments and will be on hand for his expected September showcase, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "We like him," GM Neal Huntington said. "It will be interesting to see where the bidding goes." That bidding could exceed $60MM.

Minor Moves: Jake Fox, Francisley Bueno

By edcreech | August 11, 2013 at 9:15pm CDT

Here are Sunday’s minor moves from around MLB:

  • The Diamondbacks have signed 1B/OF/C Jake Fox, Fox writes on Facebook. Fox has been assigned to Triple-A Reno. He had been playing for the independent Somerset Patriots, for whom hit .310/.387/.572 in 2013, with 25 home runs in 374 at bats. Fox played in the Pirates and Phillies systems in 2012, and last appeared in the Majors with the Orioles in 2011.
  • The Royals have announced, via Twitter, they have optioned left-hander Francisley Bueno to Triple-A Omaha. The 32-year-old was designated for assignment yesterday less than 24 hours after making his season debut with 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief against the Red Sox. Bueno has excelled at Triple-A this year posting a 2.93 ERA with 7.3 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 31 games (one start) covering 58 1/3 innings.

A look back at the original reporting and analysis found on MLBTR this past week:

  • Tim Dierkes revised MLBTR's 2014 Free Agent Power Rankings. Robinson Cano and Jacoby Ellsbury remain the top two in this edition, but Nelson Cruz dropped out in the wake of his 50-game Biogenesis suspension.
  • Steve Adams documented Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera will lose at least $1MM in salary this year and next because of his 50-game Biogenesis suspension while also putting the opportunity for a long-term contract at risk.
  • MLBTR was the first to learn the Giants decided to hold off pursuing a minor league contract with Ted Lilly, for the time being, after reviewing the left-hander's medical history.
  • MLBTR was the first to report Giants right-hander Yusmeiro Petit cleared waivers and accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A Fresno.
  • Tim asked MLBTR readers who will forego free agency this offseason by signing a contract extension. Once again, our readers are very prescient with 56% predicting Chase Utley and the Phillies would come to terms on a new pact. A mere 11 hours after the survey was published, news broke of the two sides reaching an agreement on a two-year, $27MM deal with three vesting options, which could increase the value of the extension to as much as $75MM.
  • Steve listed the notable August extensions from the previous three seasons.
  • Zach Links tracked the progress players with a 2014 vesting option are making toward exercising those options.
  • MLBTR is keeping track of the players who, based on published reports, have cleared waivers. This list can always be found in the sidebar under MLBTR Features.
  • Tim named the relievers who could become August trade candidates.
  • Zach revisited the White Sox's waiver claim acquisition of Alex Rios four years ago yesterday.
  • The MLBTR Reverse Standings page is now available offering readers a simple way of following the action, as teams vie for the for the best draft picks in 2014 by losing the most games in 2013. You can find the link under MLBTR Features in the right sidebar.
  • Zach asked MLBTR readers how the Diamondbacks will finish out their season. Nearly 75% of you see a winning season for Arizona, but not a trip to the playoffs.

Royals Acquire Jamey Carroll

By edcreech | August 11, 2013 at 4:35pm CDT

The Royals have acquired infielder Jamey Carroll from the Twins, tweets Phil Miller of the Star Tribune. Both teams have confirmed the trade and the Twins will receive a player to be named later or cash.  Carroll

"I'm excited to go to a team that's been playing really well," Carroll told reporters including Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioner Press (video link). "I hope I can go there and contribute in a positive way. It should be pretty exciting. It's exciting to go and be in this situation."

The Royals, 7.5 games behind the Tigers in the AL Central and 4.5 games out of the second AL Wild Card spot, have lost a pair of second basemen to injury this month. Chris Getz was placed on the disabled list August 1 with a left knee sprain and Miguel Tejada landed on the DL today after suffering a right calf strain last night. Carroll has split his time between second base and third base for the Twins this year while posting a slash line of .230/.284/.262 in 202 plate appearances. Royals manager Ned Yost says Carroll "is a very solid player" and will play mostly at second, but will see time at third, tweets Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star.

Carroll is in the final season of a two-year, $6.75MM contract he signed with the Twins in November 2011. The deal includes a 2014 mutual option worth $2MM. MLBTR's Zach Links detailed recently the 39-year-old needs 401 plate appearances for the option to vest, so he needs 199 more to reach that mark. If the option does vest, Carroll can decide to take the guaranteed $2MM and remain in Kansas City or accept a $250K buyout and test the open market this offseason.

  • Charlie Wilmoth examined the reasons why there weren't more sellers at the Trade Deadline this year.
  • Trades can still be made in August and Steve detailed the steps teams must follow in order to complete a swap this month.
  • Speaking of August trades, Zach Links listed the notable deals from this month one year ago.
  • Jeff, in a three-part series (I, II, III), examined the ramifications if MLB teams decide to take legal action against any player suspended in the Biogenesis debacle.
  • Zach confirmed the Pirates released veteran Brandon Inge.
  • MLBTR was the first to report Mets left-hander Tim Byrdak has a clause in his minor league deal where, if he is offered a Major League opportunity by another team, the Mets must either add him to their 25-man roster within 48 hours or allow him to sign with the interested club for no compensation. Earlier today, the Mets promoted Byrdak to Triple-A Las Vegas.
  • MLBTR was the first to learn Mark Lowe had a July 31 opt-out clause in his minor league contract with the Nationals.

By edcreech | August 4, 2013 at 4:25pm CDT

A-Rod, 12 Others To Be Suspended Monday

By edcreech | August 4, 2013 at 3:55pm CDT

Alex Rodriguez and 12 other players will be suspended for their involvement with Biogenesis, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. Earlier today, we learned Rodriguez is to be suspended through the 2014 season and Heyman names Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta, Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera, and Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli among the Major League players also expected to be suspended, as well as minor leaguers Fernando Martinez, Jordan Norberto, Fautino de los Santos, and Cesar Puello. Heyman adds there are also three players on the suspension list whose names have yet to become public.

Heyman writes Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, A's right-hander Bartolo Colon, and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal will not be suspended in connection with Biogenesis, as they have served 50-game penalties already.

All or almost all of the other 12 players are expected to accept 50-game suspensions, though there could be an additional holdout or two for appeal beyond Rodriguez, reports Heyman. All the players have the option to appeal, but it is believed close to all of them have made agreements for 50-game bans with MLB, Heyman adds. Players who appeal are eligible to keep playing until their case is heard.

Cruz told reporters, including MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan, "I haven't decided what I'm going to do about anything. It's not just about myself, it's also about the team." Today is the 112th game played by the Rangers, so Cruz would be eligible to return for the playoffs (assuming Texas reaches the post-season), if he serves a 50-game suspension beginning Monday. Sullivan surmises the Rangers will recall an outfielder from the minors adding Manny Ramirez is not an option and manager Ron Washington is reluctant to use Jurickson Profar in the outfield. Regardless of what the Rangers end up doing, assistant GM Thad Levine acknowledges, "At this stage of the season, that's a difficult bat to replace."
