Lowe Unimpressed By Mets’ Offer

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 1, 2009 at 2:33pm CDT

Derek Lowe was "hardly overwhelmed" by the Mets’ three year $36MM offer, Mike Puma of the New York Post heard from a baseball source. Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe heard from a source of his own that Lowe’s "likely to continue shopping for a more desirable offer."

It’s uncertain who would make such an offer, since Massarotti writes that the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies are not currently interested in Lowe.

As a result, the Mets could end up in what Puma calls a "protracted stare down" with Scott Boras and his client.

Phillies Sign Gary Majewski

By Tim Dierkes | December 23, 2008 at 2:51pm CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Phillies signed reliever Gary Majewski to a minor league deal worth $650K.

Majewski is best known for being the subject of a grievance filed by the Reds against the Nationals regarding an undisclosed shoulder injury.  Majewski, 29 in February, has been hit hard in the Majors the past few years.

Four Teams Pursuing Redding

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 2:44pm CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies, Rangers, Mets, and Orioles have been the most aggressive suitors for free agent starter Tim Redding. Redding, 31 in February, posted a 4.95 ERA in 33 starts for the Nationals this year while earning $1MM.  They decided to non-tender him.

Other notes from Renck…the Rox have had productive talks with Glendon Rusch, and Ray King has drawn interest from the Phillies, Marlins, and Pirates.

Derrick Turnbow Derby

By Tim Dierkes | December 18, 2008 at 8:30am CDT

We learned yesterday from Dejan Kovacevic that five teams are in serious talks for free agent reliever Derrick Turnbow.  One large-market team (not the Pirates) made a Major League offer.

Jon Paul Morosi talked to Turnbow’s agent Damon Lapa, who said the Tigers called him this week to reaffirm their interest.  The Tigers have Turnbow’s medical records (he dealt with a slight labrum tear this year).  Lapa expects his client to sign somewhere by the end of the year.

According to Morosi, the Pirates, Marlins, Rays, Rangers, and Phillies have also shown interest in Turnbow.  The last three are new, while the Rockies and Giants have been linked to Turnbow in the past as well.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Teixeira, Markakis, Johnson

By Tim Dierkes | December 17, 2008 at 10:56pm CDT

We have a new column from Ken Rosenthal this evening.

  • Mark Teixeira is holding up many areas of the free agent market, as guys like Brian Fuentes and Milton Bradley know the Angels will be interested if Tex signs elsewhere.
  • Rosenthal believes the Yankees should continue to be aggressive and make a competitive bid for Teixeira.
  • The "poor working conditions and occasionally unruly crowd behavior" make it hard for the A’s to attract free agents.  Their move in 2012 should help.
  • Rosenthal believes Chase Utley’s seven year, $85MM deal could provide a framework for a Nick Markakis extension.
  • The A’s will wait for free agent bargains now that they’ve lost Rafael Furcal.
  • The Red Sox and Mets are the main suitors for Derek Lowe, with the Yankees less likely.
  • The Braves have been shopping Kelly Johnson for an outfielder.  Attempts to acquire Ryan Ludwick or Corey Hart did not work out.

  • Scott Erickson’s wife talks about his comeback bid.

  • Curt Schilling weighs in on Mark Teixeira’s options.
  • Dayton Moore still doesn’t sound willing to trade Zack Greinke.
  • Peter Schmuck and Craig Calcaterra discuss the Sidney Ponson case, which could have a significant impact on the game.

  • John Fay looks at options for a right-handed bat for the Reds.

Phillies Sign Raul Ibanez

By Cork Gaines | December 16, 2008 at 11:00am CDT

TUESDAY: The Phillies’ three-year, $31.5MM deal with Ibanez is official.

FRIDAY, 12:45pm: Geoff Baker offers commentary on the signing.  He says the Cubs cooled on Ibanez over defensive concerns while the Angels remained in a Mark Teixeira holding pattern.

7:56am: Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez to a three-year deal. Rosenthal says the contract is worth $30MM. The deal is pending a physical.

As a type A free agent, the Mariners will receive the Phillies’ first round pick next year (#28) and a supplemental pick between the first and second round.  With Ibanez now the everyday left fielder, Jayson Stark says the Phillies will cut ties with Pat Burrell.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Phillies Re-Sign Jamie Moyer

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 4:02pm CDT

4:02pm: Larry LaRue says Moyer’s two-year deal is worth $16MM.  Scott Lauber says there’s $13MM guaranteed.

3:25pm: Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com believes the Phillies are done with their winter shopping now that they’ve added Moyer, Raul Ibanez, Chan Ho Park, Ronny Paulino, and John Mayberry, Jr.

1:25pm: According to Howard Eskin of WIP 610 in Philadelphia, the Phillies re-signed Jamie Moyer to a two-year deal.  It’s since been verified by a press release from the Phillies; a conference is scheduled.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Hunsicker, Burrell

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • According to the Newberg Report mailing list and CBSSports.com, the Rangers re-signed pitcher Doug Mathis to a minor league deal.
  • Joe Nelson’s been popular since being non-tendered – he’s heard from "at least 12-14 teams."  Ruben Amaro Jr. said today the Phillies inquired on "20 or so" non-tendered players.
  • Adam Everett’s deal with the Tigers is official – $1MM plus incentives.
  • MLB.com’s Barry Bloom spoke to Padres owner John Moores.
  • Richard Justice doesn’t think Drayton McLane would ask Ed Wade to trade Roy Oswalt, but he could see Oswalt requesting a trade.
  • Dave Sheinin says nothing has happened with Mark Teixeira since the Winter Meetings ended, and it’s no coincidence that we haven’t heard much about offers from the Red Sox or Yankees.  Michael Silverman says Boston’s eventual offer to Tex will easily be a record for this ownership group.  He guesses eight years in the $145-175MM range, noting that the Red Sox do not like to have players signed beyond age 36.
  • Buster Olney says the Orioles and Nationals bidding on Tex is "nothing less than lunacy."
  • Gerry Hunsicker has signed an extension to stay with the Rays.
  • RotoAuthority takes a look at Jonathan Sanchez.
  • George King says Kenny Lofton attempted to dissuade C.C. Sabathia from signing with the Yankees.
  • Ken Davidoff says it seems that the Yankees will avoid Scott Boras this offseason.
  • Steve Serby did a Q&A with Omar Minaya, learning details of Minaya’s Winter Meetings dealings.
  • Pat Burrell says he never received a formal offer from the Phillies.  His replacement, Raul Ibanez, will receive three years and $31.5MM.

Phillies Sign Chan Ho Park

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 9:01am CDT

MONDAY: David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News says Park held a press conference in Korea today to announce his signing with the Phillies.  It’s a one-year, $2.5MM deal with up to $5MM in incentives, according to the Korea Times.  Park relishes the chance to start for the Phils.  He said the Giants, Diamondbacks, Royals, and Blue Jays also expressed interest.

With Park signing as a starter, where does that leave Jamie Moyer?  The Phillies still have one unsettled rotation spot, though this may reduce their urgency.

THURSDAY: Todd Zolecki says the Phillies "are working on hammering out a deal with pitcher Park, who would work in relief."

WEDNESDAY: According to Yahoo’s Tim Brown, the Phillies are close to signing Chan Ho Park.  He says the Phils may view him as a starter.  Park’s average fastball velocity jumped from 88.4mph in ’07 to 92.6mph in ’08, leading some to label him a sleeper.
