Minor Moves: Cards, Carpenter, Murphy, Clemens

By Mark Polishuk | August 2, 2015 at 6:55pm CDT

Here are today’s minor league transactions from around baseball, with the newest moves at the top of the post…

  • The Cardinals outrighted right-hander Marcus Hatley and first baseman Dan Johnson off the 40-man roster and sent them to Triple-A, according to the club’s official transactions page.  Both players were designated for assignment earlier in the week.
  • Braves right-hander David Carpenter has accepted his outright assignment to Triple-A, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.  Carpenter was designated for assignment last week and had the option of becoming a free agent, which he declined to stay in the Braves organization.  Carpenter has only appeared in four games for Atlanta this season, posting a 7.36 ERA over his 3 2/3 innings of work.
  • The Brewers released infielder Donnie Murphy, as per the Pacific Coast League’s transactions page.  Murphy signed a minor league contract with Milwaukee in February and had a .257/.352/.371 line over 162 PA at Triple-A Colorado Springs.  The 32-year-old Murphy has appeared in parts of nine Major League seasons with five different teams since 2004.
  • The Royals signed righty Paul Clemens to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com’s transactions page.  Clemens posted a 5.51 ERA over 98 innings with the Astros in 2013-14 and a 5.54 ERA over 26 innings in the Phillies’ minor league system this season.  He was released by the Phils in June.
  • Chris Capuano has accepted his outright assignment from the Yankees and reported to Triple-A, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo tweets.  The veteran southpaw had the option of becoming a free agent, though doing so would’ve forfeited the roughly $1.7MM still owed to him on his Yankees contract for the rest of the season.
  • Angels right-hander Jeremy McBryde has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A, the club’s communications department tweets.  McBryde was designated for assignment earlier in the week.  McBryde has a 4.07 ERA over 659 1/3 career minor league innings, though he’s struggled to a 5.63 ERA in 46 1/3 relief frames for the Halos’ Triple-A affiliate this season.
  • While McBryde’s case has been settled, over 20 players are still in DFA limbo.  Check out the MLB Trade Rumors DFA Tracker for a full accounting of the players still awaiting their next assignment.

Angels Designate Jeremy McBryde For Assignment

By Steve Adams | July 28, 2015 at 6:17pm CDT

The Angels have designated right-hander Jeremy McBryde for assignment, tweets Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times. Presumably, the move was made to clear space for the David DeJesus, whose acquisition has officially been announced by the Angels. (The Angels are also said to be in agreement on a trade to acquire David Murphy, though there’s been no team announcement regarding that move just yet.)

The 28-year-old McBryde signed a big league deal with the Angels over the winter despite never having pitched an inning in the Major Leagues. Though he entered the season with a strong track record at Triple-A, McBryde has struggled in 2015, posting a 5.63 ERA in 46 1/3 inning. McBryde is averaging a solid 8.5 K/9 against a less-spectacular 3.7 BB/9. His problems at the Triple-A level stem largely from a .362 batting average on balls in play that is significantly higher than his usual levels.

AL Notes: Victorino, McBryde, Twins

By Jeff Todd | March 3, 2015 at 8:52pm CDT

According to the current pre-season projected standings and playoff probabilities from Fangraphs, the National League may be expected to be rather top-heavy next season. But the American League appears wide open, with nine teams projected to have .500 records but none projected at more than 87 wins. (And that doesn’t include the Royals, Orioles, or White Sox, all of which rate as sub-.500 teams in the eyes of the model.)

Here are some notes from that tightly-bunched side of the game:

  • As today’s spring opener showed, Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino is in store for a busy run as he tries to convince the team — and the team tries to convince others — of his health and productivity, as Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. Victorino is back to hitting from both sides of the plate and is being presented as the club’s top option in right, but a trade certainly still appears to be a plausible option.
  • The increasing signing of career minor leaguers to major league deals in free agency is an interesting recent trend, as MLBTR’s Tim Dierkes explored last year. Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register takes a look at one of this year’s examples, Jeremy McBryde of the Angels. “For me, he was one of the most intriguing bullpen guys in the minor leagues,” said GM Jerry Dipoto said. “… All the boxes you’d have for a prospect, he seems to check off those boxes.” As Dipoto further explained, McBryde’s lack of big league service and 40-man time also means that he comes with three option years remaining.
  • Twins GM Terry Ryan says he is receptive to the idea of mentoring Torii Hunter in the ways of the front office, as MLB.com’s Spencer Fordin reports. “He’s thought about his career after his playing days, like most players should,” said Ryan. “He’s got a good baseball mind and I’m happy to hear he wants to be a GM. That’s good.”

Angels Sign Jeremy McBryde, Designate Roger Kieschnick

By Jeff Todd | November 7, 2014 at 6:23pm CDT

The Angels have signed righty Jeremy McBryde to a major league deal, the club announced on Twitter. He will make the MLB minimum salary, according to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com (via Twitter). In a corresponding move, outfielder Roger Kieschnick has been designated for assignment.

McBryde, 27, has yet to crack the big leagues after eight years of minor league action. He spent his first seven campaigns with the Padres before joining the Athletics last year, advancing to Triple-A for the first time. He was impressive at that level, tossing 65 innings of 2.22 ERA ball and posting 9.1 K/9 against 3.6 BB/9. As Angels director of communications Eric Kay points out on Twitter, McBryde was largely unhittable for right-handed batters last year, striking out 46 and walking just three of the 135 he faced.

Kieschnick, meanwhile, is a 27-year-old who slashed .260/.317/.461 last year at Triple-A for the Diamondbacks and owns a career .847 OPS at that level. The left-handed-swinging Kieschnick has 136 plate appearances over the last two years in the big leagues, but did not do much in that limited sample. The Halos claimed him exactly one month ago, but apparently found a better use for his 40-man spot in McBryde.
