Reds Promote Joel McKeithan To Hitting Coach

The Reds announced a number of changes to their coaching staff this afternoon. The biggest news is the promotion of Joel McKeithan from assistant hitting coach to the lead hitting coach position. Terry Bradshaw has been named assistant hitting coach; he’ll pair with Tim LaMonte, who has been named assistant hitting coach/integrated performance coach. McKeithan joins returning bench coach Freddie Benavides and pitching coach Derek Johnson as the top staffers for fifth-year skipper David Bell.

McKeithan, 31, first joined the Reds last offseason. A former Vanderbilt and North Carolina State infielder, he also spent some time working with minor leaguers in the Tigers organization. McKeithan was tabbed as assistant hitting coach under Alan Zinter last offseason, and he’ll take the reins after Zinter was let go at the end of the year. It’ll be McKeithan’s first crack in a lead hitting coach position.

Bradshaw, 54, had spent four-plus seasons as the top hitting instructor with the Royals. He was dismissed by Kansas City in May but brings a fair bit of experience working with big league hitters to help the younger McKeithan. LaMonte also steps onto the MLB staff, with the Reds joining a number of other teams in adding a third hitting instructor. He’s previously spent time with the Astros and Mets, working with New York’s minor leaguers this year.

Cincinnati also announced a few more minor hires. Former MLB outfielder Collin Cowgill has been brought on as first base coach. The 36-year-old suited up with five teams from 2011-16. A University of Kentucky product, he had some post-playing experience as a manager in the Seattle farm system. He replaces Delino DeShields, who was let go at the end of the season.

Matt Tracy, who made one MLB appearance with the 2015 Yankees, has been named bullpen coach to replace Lee Tunnell. Joe Singley joins the staff as bullpen catcher, while Kyle Arnsberg was promoted to coordinator of advance scouting.

Here are the day’s minor moves:

  • The Brewers announced the addition of outfielder Quintin Berry on a minor-league arrangement. And the team also re-signed right-hander Hiram Burgos to a minors deal, Chris Cotillo of SB Nation tweets. Berry, now 33, is chiefly known for late-season and postseason stints as pinch runner and defensive replacement, but he did earn a brief trip up to the majors last year with Milwaukee. The 30-year-old Burgos has still yet to play with another organization, though he has only received six total MLB outings with the Brewers, all of which came in 2013. He struggled to a 6.06 ERA in 62 1/3 total frames in the upper minors last year, but did still carry 9.2 K/9 against 2.9 BB/9.
  • Lefty Matt Tracy will join the Blue Jays on a minor-league pact, per Cotillo (via Twitter). Tracy, who came to the professional ranks as a 24th-round pick by the Yankees, has just one MLB appearance under his belt but will offer a swingman depth option. The 29-year-old spent last year with the Twins organization, working to a 4.71 ERA in 84 innings spread over three levels of the minors.

Here are the day’s minor moves from around the league, each coming courtesy of Baseball America’s Matt Eddy unless otherwise noted…

  • Right-hander Juan Gutierrez has been released from the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate, per the International League transactions page. The 32-year-old last appeared in the Majors with the 2014 Giants when he posted a 3.96 ERA and averaged 6.2 K/9 against 2.3 BB/9 in 63 2/3 innings of work. Gutierrez logged very similar numbers in 2015 between the Triple-A affiliates for the Giants, Phillies and Nationals, and he’s posted a 4.10 ERA with a 28-to-11 K/BB ratio through 26 1/3 minor league innings in the Nationals’ organization this season.
  • The Angels released right-hander David Carpenter from a minor league contract. The 30-year-old (31 in July) was a big piece of the Braves’ bullpen from 2013-14, pitching to a 2.63 ERA in 126 2/3 innings with 10.0 K/9 against 2.6 BB/9, but he battled injuries for much of the 2015 season between the Yankees and Nationals, ultimately finishing the season on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. Carpenter posted a 4.01 ERA in 24 1/3 innings last season and has struggled more greatly in 2016, yielding 13 runs on 17 hits and nine walks in 15 innings with the Halos’ Triple-A affiliate.
  • Left-hander Matt Tracy has agreed to a minor league deal with the Marlins. The 27-year-old Tracy made his MLB debut with the Yankees last season and pitched two innings. He has a lifetime 4.79 ERA in 107 innings at the Triple-A level but struggled to a 5.11 ERA in 24 2/3 frames with the Yankees’ Double-A affiliate in Trenton this season.
  • Left-hander Mike Strong has been released from the Twins’ Triple-A affiliate. Minnesota claimed Strong off waivers from the Brewers organization this past offseason and outrighted him to Triple-A late in Spring Training. After a nice season with Milwaukee’s Double-A affiliate in 2015, however, Strong has surrendered 17 runs on 22 hits and 13 walks with 10 strikeouts in 17 2/3 innings for Minnesota’s Double-A affiliate in Chattanooga.

Yankees Outright Matt Tracy

The Yankees have outrighted left-hander Matt Tracy off their 40-man roster, according to the club’s transactions page. With the move, the team’s 40-man roster stands at 38 players.

This marks the second time in 2015 that the Yankees have removed Tracy, 26, from their 40-man. Back in April, the Yankees designated Tracy for assignment and tried to get him through outright waivers, but he was claimed by the Marlins. Tracy, however, didn’t throw a pitch with the Marlins organization before being designated for assignment in Miami, and the Yankees wound up re-claiming him days later. It would seem then that the Yankees see plenty to like in Tracy but consider him a fringe option on the 40-man.

In 25 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season, Tracy has posted a 6.75 ERA, though he was substantially better in 2014. Last year, the former 24th-round pick worked to a combined 3.76 ERA with 5.3 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 150 2/3 innings between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton Wilkes/Barre.
