Padres, Phillies Could Revisit Linebrink Talks
Ken Rosenthal was a guest on 610 WIP’s morning show and reiterated that Scott Linebrink was now probably available for a trade. While Rosenthal said a few days ago that Kevin Towers would like to find the Padres center fielder of the future, this morning he said that the Pods are interested in a left fielder that can hit a bit. In addition, he mentioned that the Phillies and Padres may revisit the Aaron Rowand/Linebrink talks of the early spring.
The Phillies outfield corps has several redundancies at this point. Pat Burrell provides power in left, but Michael Bourn, Shane Victorino and Aaron Rowand are all light-hitting center fielders. If the Padres are interested in a centerfielder for the future and would prefer to do it on the cheap, perhaps the Phillies are should be willing to part with Bourn or Victorino instead of Rowand.
At this point, with Matt Smith floundering, a big need for the Phillies is a left-handed reliever. But still, Linebrink would look awfully nice in red pinstripes.

Rowand Trade Coming?
In his latest Under The Knife article, Will Carroll writes:
"A rumor making the rounds is that the Phillies are holding Aaron Rowand out to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself as they try to deal him."
Rowand is, however, playing in today’s game against Kei Igawa and the Yankees. Prior to today, he sat out three straight games. To me it seems like the White Sox are probably the top suitor.
Lieber, Kim Rumors
Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has some trade rumor tidbits from around baseball this morning. To summarize:
- Renck does not think the Phils truly want to use Jon Lieber as a reliever, and mentions two scenarios floating around. Lieber could be paired with Aaron Rowand and sent to the White Sox, which I would think would require at least Mike MacDougal. Would be interesting to see Liebs back in Chicago if old pals KW and "Stand Pat" Gillick can work it out. Or, he could go to Milwaukee for Kevin Mench. Such a trade would have to push Claudio Vargas to the bullpen.
- Renck says the Rockies like Mark Hendrickson despite his mediocrity and their stable of starters. The Dodgers would like to include Hendrickson as part of a bigger deal for a slugger.
- Byung-Hyun Kim to Florida is a long shot unless the Rox eat most of his $2.5MM salary. The Rocky Mountain News reiterates that the interested parties are Florida, Oakland, and Texas. You can add the Pirates to that list as well. The Bucs could also trade for Armando Benitez.
- John Thomson seems likely to be released. The A’s have been rumored.
More On Rowand Rumors
Just a few tidbits regarding yesterday’s Sun-Times story that the White Sox may reacquire Aaron Rowand.
The Philadelphia Inquirer says that the White Sox have been scouting recent Phillies games, though Rowand did not play yesterday. Additionally, the Delco Times speculates that the availability of Rowand is directly related to the fine play of Greg Dobbs this spring. The waiver pickup could platoon with Jayson Werth in right field, with Shane Victorino moving to center.
In a related topic, Buster Olney said today that any Lieber/Rios talks are dead but that the Rangers might make sense for Lieber.
White Sox May Reacquire Rowand
Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that Sox GM Kenny Williams has been in talks with Pat Gillick regarding Aaron Rowand. This is not the first time such a possibility has surfaced. Southpaw Boone Logan may be among the relievers going to Philadelphia.
Even after the Freddy Garcia trade, a Philadelphia Inquirer article mentioned that Rowand remained a favorite of White Sox management. If they can’t trade for him, there’s a chance they sign him as a free agent after the season. Center field and left field are definitely holes for Chicago this season, but I don’t expect the Sox to rely on Erstad/Sweeney/Anderson/Podsednik all year long.
Given that a Rowand for Scott Linebrink trade was seriously under consideration, I wonder if the Sox would have to surrender a closing-worthy reliever like Mike MacDougal to seal the deal.
Does This Paper Have Editors?
Paul Hagen of the Philadelphia Daily News continues to run wild with misinformation regarding the Phillies’ offer of Aaron Rowand for Scott Linebrink. I’ve been watching this one from the start; it’s just strange. Hagen insists on belittling this particular Buster Olney rumor and Internet reporting in general; he already took a shot on February 1st.
Today, he leads with these unflattering remarks:
"Rumors are cheap and plentiful during the offseason. Anybody with a vivid imagination and access to a computer can launch a blind item that will circle the globe in seconds and circulate for weeks. At first glance, then, the Internet whisper that the Phillies had offered centerfielder Aaron Rowand to the Padres for righthanded setup reliever Scott Linebrink seemed far-fetched."
To which Olney responded today:
"To clarify, it was not an Internet rumor, ever. It was written, originally, as something that was discussed between the two teams."
When is Hagen going to print a correction? I think he owes Olney an apology, though Buster is handling it with class.
More On Rowand/Linebrink
Internet rumor, eh? If there’s one term I’d like to retire, it’s "Internet rumor." It discredits the many legitimate Internet-based sources and generalizes the entire medium. Many rumors broke via the Internet this year (blogs included). In fact, most of them came via the Internet, courtsey of Ken Rosenthal. I’ve seen a lot of garbage in print, but don’t refer to them all as "newspaper rumors."
In this case, Paul Hagen doubts the legitimacy of a Buster Olney rumor that first appeared in Olney’s blog on January 26th. Olney reported that the Padres and Phillies were kicking around an Aaron Rowand for a reliever trade.
Anyway, Hagen creates a newspaper rumor, speculating that the Phils might entertain trading Rowand because they think they can acquire an outfielder for Jon Lieber. He also speculates that the Phils would send both Lieber and Rowand to San Diego for Mike Cameron or Terrmel Sledge. Now that’s one that "appears to make little sense."

Linebrink/Rowand Trade On Hold
Buster Olney mentioned a possible trade of Aaron Rowand to the Padres for a reliever back on January 26th. Turns out the targeted reliever for the Phils was indeed Scott Linebrink. However, any such deal is on hold until springtime. Kevin Towers would like to see how Terrmel Sledge looks in left and how the loss of Linebrink would affect San Diego’s bullpen.
I say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I think a Sledge/Cruz platoon could outhit Rowand for a lesser cost. And is the difference in defense in left field that crucial? David Wells and Chris Young typically don’t go six innings; I’d rather retain one of the league’s better eighth-inning guys.
White Sox Keen On Rowand?
The Philadelphia Inquirer mentioned today that Aaron Rowand remains a favorite of White Sox management. According to the paper, the Sox are expected to try to sign him as a free agent after 2007. Of course, Kenny Williams and Pat Gillick seem to get along well these days, so a deal could be struck. On the other hand, Ryan Sweeney or Brian Anderson could be a solid center fielder by 2008 for the league minimum.
Two days ago, Buster Olney mentioned that the Padres were kicking around the idea of sending a reliever to Philly for Rowand.
