Nationals Name Henry Blanco Bench Coach

The Nationals announced that Henry Blanco is now the club’s bench coach. Blanco was already on the staff as a catching and strategy coach. Also, Bob Henley has been added to the staff with the title of major league field coordinator.

The moves are domino effects of the club’s recent shakeup. On the weekend, they fired president of baseball operations Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez. Yesterday, bench coach Miguel Cairo was given the position of interim manager, which created a bench coach vacancy. In essence, the firing of Martinez has led to Cairo taking his seat, Blanco bumping up to Cairo’s spot and now Henley slotting in to even things out and presumably take up some of Blanco’s previous duties.

Blanco, 53, played in the majors from 1997 to 2013. He immediately pivoted to coaching once his playing days were done, joining the Diamondbacks staff in 2014. He then spent three seasons on the Cubs’ staff as quality assurance coach, winning a World Series ring in 2016. Going into 2018, he joined Washington’s staff as bullpen coach, winning another ring in 2019. He pivoted to catching and strategy coach ahead of the 2022 season.

Henley, 52, got a brief major league run as a player. He appeared in 41 games for the 1998 Expos, the franchise which would later become the Nationals. He joined Montreal’s minor league ranks as a coach back in 2003 and stayed with the organization when they relocated to Washington in 2005. He worked his way up to the big league staff for the 2014 season. He stayed on the staff through various managerial changes but his last season was 2021. He stayed in the org but was moved to a player development role for the 2022 season.

Nationals Make Two Coaching Changes

Nationals third base coach Bob Henley and first base coach Randy Knorr won’t be returning to the staff next season, as The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty reports that the club has reassigned the two coaches to player-development jobs.  These could be the only changes made to manager Davey Martinez’s staff, as the other five coaches have been asked to return in their current roles.

Henley was a 26th-round draft pick for the Expos in 1991, and apart from one game with the Pirates A-ball affiliate in 2002, he has spent his entire baseball career in the Expos/Nationals organization.  After working as a manager and field coordinator at the minor league level, Henley joined Washington’s coaching staff in 2013 and has worked as the third base coach for seven of the past eight seasons.

Knorr’s tenure with the club also dates back to the Nationals’ days in Montreal, as he played for the Expos in 2001 and then played three seasons for the team’s Triple-A affiliate before retiring from playing.  Knorr has worked as a minor league manager and worked in player development in between three separate stints on Washington’s big league coaching staff, working as a bullpen coach and bench coach in the past before his 2021 assignment as the first base coach.

Beyond their official titles, Knorr and Henley were also baserunning coaches, and Henley worked as an outfield coach.  It isn’t yet known if the replacements will take over those additional duties, or if the Nationals might expand their staff with a new position or two.

Of the other five members of the staff, Dougherty writes that hitting coach Kevin Long “becomes the biggest question mark” to be in D.C. in 2022, as Long “is open to returning again, though he will consider other opportunities.”  Long will likely require a multi-year contract to come back for his fifth season as the Nationals’ hitting coach.  His first deal with the team was a three-year contract (rather an unusually lengthy commitment for a coach), and he agreed to return on a one-year pact for 2021.

Padres Interview Bob Henley For Managerial Position

In their search for an Andy Green replacement, the Padres conducted an interview with Nationals third base coach Bob Henley, reports Jon Heyman of MLB Network (via Twitter). This is the first we’ve heard of interest in Henley, who has been the Nats’ third base coach since the start of the 2014 season. Notably, Henley has survived two managerial changes in that time, perhaps reflecting an ability to adapt to the differing leadership styles of Matt Williams, Dusty Baker and now Dave Martinez.

Henley is something of a franchise lifer for the National League champs. His only big league playing experience came with the 1998 Expos, with whom he got into 41 games. Solid MLB numbers notwithstanding, Henley was done as a player by age 30, when he took over as a rookie ball manager in Montreal’s farm system. Henley remained with the franchise upon its move to D.C. and accrued six more years of managerial experience at the lowest levels. Henley transitioned to front office work in 2010, taking over as minor-league field coordinator. After four years in the role, he got his first shot at a big league dugout as Williams’ third base coach, and he’s held that position ever since.

The Padres have cast a wide net in their search for a new manager. In addition to Henley, they’ve spoken with Braves third base coach Ron Washington, former Angels manager Brad Ausmus, Padres interim manager Rod Barajas, and Rangers field coordinator Jayce Tingler. It’s a varied group, as Washington and Ausmus have ample big league managerial experience, while Barajas had none until taking over the Pads’ dugout for the season’s final eight games in the wake of Green’s dismissal. Tingler joins Henley as having no MLB managerial experience, although both (as well as Barajas) have minor-league managing experience. Tingler and Henley have also held active roles in player development departments, which could be especially useful to a Padre club rife with young talent throughout the organization.
