Twins Designate Trevor Richards For Assignment

The Twins announced their waiver claim of right-hander Michael Tonkin, which was previously reported. To open a 40-man spot, righty Trevor Richards has been designated for assignment. To take the active spot of Richards, the club has selected the contract of righty Caleb Boushley. To open a 40-man spot for Boushley, righty Joe Ryan has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Richards was the Twins’ lone deadline pickup a month ago, coming over from Toronto in exchange for minor league infielder Jay Harry. The right-hander had scoreless outings in seven of his ten appearances with Minnesota but also had three shakier outings, leading to a 4.15 ERA in 13 innings overall.

That may not seem particularly poor at first glance, but Richards walked a massive 18.6% of his opponents during his time with the Twins and even more incredibly uncorked seven wild pitches during those 13 frames. He also hit two batters. Overall, the lack of command he showed proved too alarming for the team to continue on with the right-hander.

Richards has had some big league success in the past, both as a starter (261 2/3 innings of 4.22 ERA ball in 2018-19) and a reliever (3.50 ERA, 31.1 K% in 64 1/3 innings in 2021). However, even though he’s shown a consistent ability to miss bats and regularly flummoxed lefties with a plus changeup, he’s struggled with command and been far too hittable against fellow righties.

Richards came to the Twins as a rental who’d been struggling with his former team, so the cost of acquisition to acquire him was quite low. Still, the Twins surely hoped for better results, particularly given their lack of other deadline additions. Instead, he’ll give way to Tonkin, who’s back for a second 2024 stint with the team that originally drafted him in the 30th round back in 2008. Richards will now hit waivers and presumably clear, as a team would need to be willing to pay the remaining $358K on his $2.15MM salary in order to place a claim.

As for the 30-year-old Boushley, this’ll be his second stint with the Twins this year as well. He pitched two innings and allowed two runs a few months back, but has spent the rest of the season in Triple-A, where he has a 4.97 ERA in 116 innings. That earned run average is skewed in part by a calamitous nine-run shellacking at the hands of the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate back on July 3, but Boushley has been struggling in general as of late. Even setting aside that nine-run bonanza, he’s been tagged for a 6.55 ERA in his past seven starts with the Saints.

Caleb Boushley Accepts Outright Assignment With Twins

Right-hander Caleb Boushley has cleared waivers after being designated for assignment a few days ago, with Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com among those to relay the transaction on X. The righty had the right to elect free agency but has accepted his outright and will report to Triple-A St. Paul.

Boushley, 30, signed a minor league deal with the Twins in the offseason. He was added to the club’s roster in May but mostly kept on optional assignment, only getting into one big league game. That brought his tally of big league appearances to two, as he also appeared in one game with the Brewers last year. He has a 6.23 earned run average in his 4 1/3 innings at the top level.

He’s made 16 Triple-A starts this year with a 4.68 ERA. His 20.8% strikeout rate is a bit below par but he’s limited his walks to a tiny rate of 4%. Dating back to the start of 2021, he has a 4.55 ERA in 463 1/3 minor league innings with a 19.4% strikeout rate and 7% walk rate.

He still has a full slate of options yet the other 29 clubs passed on the chance to claim him and bring him aboard as pitching depth. Since he was outrighted by the Brewers last year, he had the right to elect free agency but has chosen to stay in the Twins’ system.

Minnesota lost Anthony DeSclafani for the year to flexor tendon surgery but their rotation is currently pretty healthy apart from that. At the moment, it consists of Pablo López, Bailey Ober, Joe Ryan, Chris Paddack and Simeon Woods Richardson. Guys like David Festa and Louie Varland are on the 40-man and currently in Triple-A, with Boushley now providing more depth alongside them in a non-roster capacity.

Twins Designate Caleb Boushley For Assignment

The Twins announced this afternoon that they’ve designated right-hander Caleb Boushley for assignment. In addition, they’ve announced that infielder Diego Castillo’s contract has been selected and that he’ll be taking the place of infielder Jose Miranda on the active roster. Miranda has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a low back strain. The Castillo and Miranda moves were previously reported last night.

Boushley, 30, appeared in just one game for the Twins this year. He signed with the club on a minor league deal back in January but wasn’t selected to the roster until the beginning of May. Boushley struggled in his lone appearance in a Twins uniform, allowing two runs on three hits while recording both a strikeout and a walk in two innings of work. He’s spent the rest of the season to this point pitching as a starter at the Triple-A level, where he sports a 4.68 ERA across 16 starts. His 20.8% strikeout rate is solid and his 4% walk rate is incredible, but Boushley has had some trouble with the long ball this year, surrendering ten in his 84 2/3 innings of work this year.

A longtime Padres farmhand after being selected in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft, Boushley moved on to the Brewers prior to the 2022 season and spent two seasons with the club before finally making his big league debut in late September last year, just days before his 30th birthday. His lone major league appearance in a Brewers uniform went better than his outing with the Twins, as he struck out five batters while walking two and allowed just one run on a solo homer in 2 1/3 innings of work. With a relatively pedestrian 4.62 ERA in 87 appearances (82 starts) at the Triple-A level for his career, the journeyman has shown himself to be a serviceable multi-inning depth option for a club in need of pitching.

Minnesota will now have one week to either work out a trade involving Boushley or try and pass him through waivers. If Boushley clears waivers, the Twins will have the opportunity to assign him outright to the minor leagues, though Boushley could opt to reject that assignment in favor of free agency should he choose to do so after being outrighted previously by the Brewers last year.

Twins Outright Jay Jackson To Triple-A

TODAY: Jackson has been outrighted off the 40-man roster after clearing waivers.  Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press (via X) reports that Jackson will report to Triple-A, rather than exercising his right to free agency.

MAY 19: The Twins have designated right-hander Jay Jackson for assignment, per a club announcement. Right-hander Caleb Boushley was recalled in the corresponding move.

Jackson, 36, signed a $1.5MM guarantee with the Twins back in February but has struggled badly across 17 appearances with the Twins this season. In 22 1/3 innings of work, Jackson has posted a 6.75 ERA with a 4.49 FIP despite a solid 24% strikeout rate and a decent 8.3% walk rate. Much of the damage against Jackson has come via the long ball, as the veteran has already allowed a whopping four homers this season. While an unbelievably low 47.2% strand rate in conjunction with those solid strikeout and walk rates suggest Jackson may have been a victim of some bad luck (as demonstrated by his 3.49 SIERA and 3.74 xERA), those early season struggles were nonetheless enough for the Twins to make a change.

The 36-year-old’s professional career began all the way back in 2008, when he was a ninth-round pick by the Cubs. Jackson eventually made his big league debut as a member of the Padres but pitched just 34 2/3 innings in the majors between his 2015 debut and the 2021 season, instead having spent the majority of his career to that point pitching in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He posted excellent results during his time overseas with a 2.16 ERA and a 27.4% strikeout rate, and made his way back to the big leagues in 2021 as a member of the Giants. Jackson managed just 52 2/3 innings of work at the big league level from 2021-23, but posted solid results when on the mound with a 2.73 ERA and 4.07 FIP in 50 appearances.

Those strong previous results in conjunction with his solid peripherals in Minnesota could make Jackson and interesting target for teams in need of relief pitching, though it’s possible no team will want to assume the remainder of his contract with the Twins by claiming him off waivers. Should Jackson clear waivers, he’d have the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, although he would forfeit his guaranteed salary in doing so.

Replacing Jackson on the Twins’ active roster is Boushley, who will be returning to the majors after a single-game cup of coffee with the Brewers last season. Boushley’s lone MLB appearance went fairly well as he posted a 3.86 ERA while striking out five 2 1/3 innings of work, although he did surrender two walks and a home run during the outing. Boushley found himself outrighted off the 40-man roster in Milwaukee this past offseason and elected free agency before signing with the Twins on a minor league deal back in January. Boushley’s contract was selected by the Twins earlier this month, although he did not make it into an MLB game before being optioned back to the minors. The right-hander has pitched to a decent 4.54 ERA in eight starts at the Triple-A level and figures to offer the Twins a long relief option out of the bullpen going forward.

Twins Select Caleb Boushley

The Twins announced Wednesday that they’ve selected the contract of right-hander Caleb Boushley from Triple-A St. Paul. Southpaw Kody Funderburk was optioned to St. Paul in a corresponding move. Minnesota already had an open 40-man spot after designating righty Matt Bowman for assignment yesterday.

Boushley, 30, is a Wisconsin native and UW-La Crosse product who made his big league debut with his hometown Brewers last summer. He faced ten batters, whiffing half of them, but also walked a pair of hitters and gave up a solo homer in his 2 1/3-inning cup of coffee. He’ll now suit up for another Midwest club after signing a minor league deal with Minnesota in the offseason.

It’s been a nice start to the season for Boushley in the Twins’ Triple-A rotation. He’s started five games for the Saints and posted an even 4.00 ERA with a 27.5% strikeout rate against just a 3.7% walk rate in 27 frames. He’s averaged one homer per nine innings pitched and kept the ball on the ground at a solid 43.9% rate. In parts of five Triple-A seasons, the former 33rd-round pick (Padres, 2017) has logged a 4.56 ERA, 19.3% strikeout rate and 7.5% walk rate.

Though he’s been a starter in the minors this season (and for the majority of his career), Boushley will give the Twins a fresh arm in the bullpen for the time being. They used five relievers yesterday, including 30 pitches from the now-optioned Funderburk. Closer Jhoan Duran tossed 15 pitches and picked up a save in his first appearance of the season after being activated just yesterday from a month-long stint on the IL due to an oblique strain. Lefty Caleb Thielbar has also worked on consecutive days and might not be available today as a result (though he threw only two pitches en route to being credited with the victory last night). The Twins will send right-hander Bailey Ober to the mound against the White Sox today as they look to extend their MLB-best nine-game winning streak to a tenth game.

Twins Sign Caleb Boushley To Minor League Deal

The Twins have signed right-hander Caleb Boushley to a minor league deal, according to his transactions tracker at MLB.com. The righty has been assigned to Triple-A St. Paul for now but could perhaps receive an invite to major league Spring Training.

Boushley, 30, got to make his major league debut towards the end of the 2023 season. The Brewers selected his contract September 29, after they had already clinched the National League Central. He ended up pitching 2 1/3 innings in that day’s game, finishing a 10-inning contest against the Cubs. He struck out five and walked two, allowing one hit and one earned run. The Brewers won it on Carlos Santana’s walk-off double, video courtesy of MLB.com. Boushley was able to earn the win, leading to the obligatory post-game bath. He was outrighted off the club’s roster at the end of October and elected free agency.

Apart from that one memorable MLB outing, he spent the year in Triple-A. He tossed 135 2/3 innings over 26 starts and three relief appearances, allowing 5.11 earned runs per nine frames. He struck out 18.9% of opponents while walking 8.8%. That’s generally been the shape of his minor league production over the years, as he has struck out 20.7% of hitters on the farm over his professional career but only walked 6.6%.

The Twins’ rotation is in a weaker spot than it was last year, with Sonny Gray and Kenta Maeda having reached free agency. Chris Paddack has recovered from Tommy John surgery and could soften the blow a bit, but the group is a whole is still a notch below the 2023 squad. Paddack will join Pablo López, Bailey Ober and Joe Ryan in the front four. Louie Varland could perhaps be in the number five spot but he had significant home run issues in his debut. The roster also has Simeon Woods Richardson, Matt Canterino and Brent Headrick aboard as optionable depth pieces.

The club is seemingly working with diminished resources this offseason due to uncertainty around the broadcast revenue situation. They’ve had a fairly quiet offseason so far, not yet having done anything to try to compensate for the losses of Gray or Maeda. Boushley will give them a non-roster depth arm, joining guys like Randy Dobnak and A.J. Alexy.

Brewers Outright Caleb Boushley

The Brewers have assigned right-hander Caleb Boushley outright to Triple-A, per MLB.com’s transactions log. There had been no prior indication that Boushley had been placed on waivers. Boushley does not have the requisite service time to reject the assignment but figures to be eligible for minor league free agency in November unless added back to Milwaukee’s 40-man roster.

Boushley, who celebrated his 30th birthday earlier this month, was selected by San Diego in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft. He spent five seasons in the Padres’ minor league system, with a 4.25 ERA in 332 2/3 innings of work across five levels of the minor leagues. He was selected by the Brewers in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft in December of 2021, and pitched well as a starter at the Triple-A level during the 2022 season with a 3.25 ERA in 127 1/3 innings of work, albeit with a strikeout rate of just 17.5%.

Boushley saw his strikeout rate tick up to 18.9% across 135 2/3 innings of work with Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate this year, though unfortunately the increase in strikeouts was combined with significantly worse results on the mound. Across 29 appearances (26 starts), Boushley posted a 5.11 ERA, nearly two runs higher than his 2022 figure. That didn’t stop the Brewers from giving Boushley his first taste of big league action in 2023, however. The minor league journeyman made his MLB debut after six seasons in the minors in late September to decent results. In 2 1/3 innings of work, Boushley struck out five while walking two and allowing a home run, good for a 3.86 ERA.

Now, Boushley is poised to enter free agency for the first time in his career. As difficult as his 2023 campaign was, it’s certainly feasible that he could receive interest from clubs with a dearth of rotation arms as a possible minor league depth option, given his strong 2022 campaign. As for the Brewers, the club’s rotation depth is headlined by left-hander Robert Gasser, the club’s #5 prospect per MLB Pipeline. Gasser pitched well in 2023, with a 3.79 ERA in 135 1/3 Triple-A innings of work in his first full season with the Brewers since the club acquired him in the Josh Hader trade last summer.

Brewers Select Caleb Boushley, DFA Julio Teheran Amid Flurry Of Roster Moves

The Brewers have selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Caleb Boushley, the team announced. To make room on the roster, Julio Teheran has been designated for assignment. In addition, the team has swapped out one lefty for another, optioning Ethan Small and recalling Clayton Andrews in his place. Lastly, the Brewers also placed right-hander Trevor Megill on the restricted list.

Boushley will be making his MLB debut, just two days ahead of his 30th birthday. Selected by the Padres in the 33rd round of the 2017 draft, he played in the Padres system throughout the first five years of his professional career. He joined the Brewers organization ahead of the 2022 season and pitched well for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, starting 25 games and posting an ERA of 3.25. The righty hasn’t performed quite so well this year, pitching to a 5.11 ERA in 29 games (26 starts). Still, he has evidently done enough to earn a call to the show after seven years in the minor leagues. It seems unlikely the Brewers are considering Boushley for a spot on the postseason roster, and with the NL Central crown already locked up, they might just be giving the career minor leaguer a long-awaited cup of coffee with the big league squad.

As for Teheran, this marks an unceremonious end to his mini-comeback season. The two-time All-Star had not played a regular role for an MLB club since 2020. He spent most of the 2021 campaign on the injured list and then split his time in 2022 between the Atlantic League and the Mexican League.

The 32-year-old looked excellent through his first six appearances with Milwaukee, posting a 1.53 ERA and averaging nearly six innings per start. However, he struggled through his next four outings before landing on the injured list and missing the next eight weeks of the season. Teheran returned in mid-September as a long reliever, and while he looked capable, giving up just two earned runs in nine innings of work, it was far from a guarantee that the Brewers would find a spot for him on the postseason roster.

Small was recalled on Wednesday and threw a single scoreless inning against the Cardinals. It was a substantial improvement over his last big league appearance back in May, when he gave up five runs on nine hits in three innings of mop-up work against the Giants. Nonetheless, the Brewers have decided to replace him with Andrews, another 26-year-old lefty with limited major league experience. Andrews made his MLB debut in July and has thrown a grand total of 1 2/3 big league innings, giving up eight earned runs on eight hits. Both pitchers have much better numbers at Triple-A, although Andrews was especially dominant over the final two months of the minor league season, pitching to a 2.12 ERA in August and September.

The Brewers have three southpaws higher up on the depth chart (Hoby Milner, Wade Miley, and Andrew Chafin), so it’s unlikely they’re auditioning Andrews for a postseason role. More likely, they’re just taking stock of the various arms in the organization over the final days of the regular season.

Finally, while the restricted list can sound ominous, Megill is simply spending an extra day with his wife and newborn baby, having maxed out his three days on the paternity list. He is expected back tomorrow, Craig Counsell told reporters (including Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel).
