Eight Players Elect Free Agency

As the offseason nears, a number of players elect minor league free agency each week. These players are separate from six-year MLB free agents, who’ll reach the open market five days after the conclusion of the World Series. Eligible minor leaguers can begin electing free agency as soon as the regular season wraps up. These players were all outrighted off a team’s 40-man roster during the year and have the requisite service time and/or multiple career outrights necessary to reach free agency since they weren’t added back to teams’ rosters.

Electing free agency is the anticipated outcome for these players. There’ll surely be more to test the market in the coming weeks. We’ll offer periodic updates at MLBTR. These transactions are all reflected on the MiLB.com or MLB.com logs.

Marlins Outright Jeff Lindgren

September 20: Lindgren cleared waivers and was outrighted back to Triple-A Jacksonville, according to the MLB.com transaction tracker.

September 18: The Marlins announced that left-hander Ryan Weathers has been reinstated from the 60-day injured list. Right-hander Jeff Lindgren has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.

Weathers was putting together a nice season before landing on the IL. He tossed 71 innings over 13 starts, allowing 3.55 earned runs per nine. He combined a 22.5% strikeout rate with a 6.7% walk rate and 51.5% ground ball rate. Unfortunately, a finger strain put him on the shelf in June and he’s only now returning.

The Marlins are well out of contention at this point but the lefty can get a few more starts under his belt and hopefully go into the offseason healthy. He can still be retained for four seasons after this one and could become a key part of the Miami rotation going forward if he can carry his strong results into next year.

To open a spot for Weathers, the Marlins have bumped off Lindgren. He was just added to the roster last week and got to celebrate his 28th birthday yesterday while in the big leagues, but he didn’t get into a game during his brief time on the 40-man. He does have a sliver of major league experience, having made three appearances for the Fish last year.

The righty has spent the majority of this year on the farm, serving in a swing role at multiple levels. He has thrown 48 1/3 innings at Double-A with a 5.21 ERA as well as 27 1/3 Triple-A innings with a 7.90 ERA. The Marlins will put him on waivers in the coming days. Since he has been previously outrighted in his career, he would have the right to elect free agency if he were to pass through unclaimed.

Marlins Designate Jonathan Bermudez For Assignment

The Marlins announced a series of roster moves today, most notably designating lefty Jonathan Bermudez for assignment in order to clear roster space for righty Jeff Lindgren, whose contract has been selected from Triple-A Jacksonville. Miami also placed righty John McMillon on the 15-day injured list due to tightness in his right elbow. McMillon’s roster spot will be filled by righty Michael Petersen, whom the Fish claimed from the Dodgers earlier this week and who’ll now jump right onto the big league roster.

As Craig Mish of SportsGrid and the Miami Herald points out (on X), once either Lindgren or Petersen take the mound for the Marlins, the team will set a new major league record for most players used in a single season. They’re currently tied with the 2019 Mariners at 69 players. It’d be somewhat poetic if Petersen gets the distinction, as Miami announced he’ll wear No. 70 with the club.

Bermudez, 28, joined the Marlins on a minor league deal in April 2023. The former Astros draftee had been released by the Giants prior to that deal. He’s pitched 6 2/3 innings this season, his first career action at the MLB level, and allowed six runs on 11 hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts. He’s had a rough showing in Jacksonville, too, logging a 6.46 ERA in 24 2/3 frames.

Bermudez has worked more in the bullpen this season than in years past. He spent the 2023 campaign in the Double-A rotation for the Marlins, where he made 18 starts and posted a 4.58 ERA in 94 1/3 innings. Bermudez punched out 26.6% of his opponents there against a 9.5% walk rate. The former 23rd-round pick (2018) briefly snuck onto the back end of Baseball America’s top-30 Astros prospects back in 2022, but he’s taken some steps back since that point.

Lindgren, 27, pitched seven innings for the Marlins last year in his MLB debut but was eventually removed from the 40-man roster. He’s been hit hard in the upper minors this year, combining for 75 2/3 innings of 6.19 ERA ball between Double-A and Triple-A.

Since he’s been working out of the Jacksonville rotation, he’s stretched out for multiple innings of relief if needed. The Marlins’ pitching staff is in shambles following injuries to Jesus Luzardo, Eury Perez, Braxton Garrett, Max Meyer, Ryan Weathers, Calvin Faucher and Andrew Nardi, among others (plus trades of Trevor Rogers, Tanner Scott, A.J. Puk, Bryan Hoeing, JT Chargois and Huascar Brazoban). Lindgren can fill any role necessary down the stretch but will likely be removed from the 40-man once again at some point.

Marlins Outright Three To Triple-A

The Marlins outrighted outfielder Jonathan Davis, left-hander Enmanuel De Jesus, and right-hander Jeff Lindgren off their 40-man roster, according to the team’s official transactions page.  Davis and Lindgren can opt for free agency instead of the assignment to Triple-A because they’ve each been previously outrighted during their careers, while De Jesus is likely to wind up in minor league free agency.

Davis first had to be activated from the 60-day injured list before being outrighted, as he has been out of action since undergoing right meniscus surgery back in July.  Davis suffered the injury diving for a ball in center field, and it ended up costing him the remainder of his 2023 season.  The meniscus procedure had a recovery timeline of 3-6 months, so while Davis’ normal offseason routine will be delayed, he can hopefully be ready for Spring Training — whether in the Marlins’ camp, or with another club.

Miami acquired Davis in a trade with the Tigers last May, as the Fish were looking to shore up their center field depth with Jazz Chisholm Jr. recovering from turf toe.  Davis ended up playing in 34 games and making 104 plate appearances (the most of any of his six MLB seasons) before getting hurt.  After being part of five different organizations since August 2021, Davis may now find himself on the move once more, almost surely on another minor league deal.

Davis has a .198/.295/.276 slash line over 205 games and 464 PA at the big league level, appearing in each of the last six seasons.  Despite the lack of offense, Davis is a well-regarded baserunner who can play all three outfield positions, making him a useful depth option at either Triple-A or on a Major League bench.  The outright assignment is essentially an early non-tender for the Marlins, as Davis was eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter and projected to earn $800K for 2024.

De Jesus made his MLB debut this season, tossing 6 1/3 innings over two appearances and allowing eight earned runs.  That 11.57 ERA notwithstanding, De Jesus could finally call himself a big leaguer after a long minor league career that began in the Red Sox system in 2014.  De Jesus pitched with Boston until he spent the 2022 season with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, and he then caught on with the Marlins on a minors contract.

Working as both a starter and reliever over his career, De Jesus has a 4.01 ERA over 749 1/3 innings in the minors as a whole, and a 4.61 ERA in 191 1/3 frames at Triple-A.  The 26-year-old’s control has become an increasing issue over the last couple of years, hampering his success in the upper minors.

Lindgren was a 24th-round pick for the Marlins in the 2019 draft, and he also reached the majors for the first time in 2023, appearing in three games and delivering a 5.14 ERA over seven innings pitched.  The number of appearances didn’t quite outpace the number of outrights, as this is now the fourth time Miami has removed Lindgren from their 40-man roster in 2023.  As such, he could’ve opted into free agency on multiple occasions this season, but since he chose to remain with the Marlins on those previous occasions, he might well choose to stay once more.

Marlins Place Eury Perez On 15-Day Injured List, Select Jeff Lindgren

The Marlins have selected the contract of right-hander Jeff Lindgren, per a club announcement. In a corresponding move, right-hander Eury Perez has been placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to September 21) with left SI joint inflammation. The move to the IL brings an end to Perez’s regular season, at the very least. He’ll also be unavailable for the Wild Card series of a potential playoff run, though it’s not currently clear if he could return later in the postseason, should Miami make it that far.

Perez, 20, made his MLB debut for the Marlins earlier this year. He was considered one of the sport’s top pitching prospects at the time and made an immediate impression upon reaching the majors with a 1.34 ERA and 3.03 FIP in addition to a 29.2% strikeout rate across his first nine starts. Miami made the decision to option Perez to the minors in early July with the hope of managing his innings total in 2023 while also keeping him available for the stretch run and a potential postseason push.

Things didn’t go according to plan, however. In addition to Perez landing on the injured list for the final week of the season, the rookie’s results have been far less impressive since returning to the majors in early August. In his last 38 innings (eight starts), he’s posted just a 4.26 ERA and 4.71 FIP. That late-season downturn in performance culminated in a three-inning outing against the Mets this past Wednesday where Perez allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks while stirking out just two. Overall, Perez will finish his first regular season as a big leaguer with a 3.15 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 91 1/3 innings of work.

The news comes on the heels of today’s announcement that ace right-hander Sandy Alcantara won’t pitch again this year. The news combines for a devastating pair of blows to the Marlins rotation as they’re in the midst of a late-season playoff. The club sat just one game back of the Cubs for the final NL Wild Card spot entering play today, but will now have to lean on a rotation group headlined by left-handers Jesus Luzardo and Braxton Garrett. With veteran Johnny Cueto long since demoted to relief work, righty Edward Cabrera and potential depth options like David Smeltzer and Ryan Weathers will have to help carry the load in the absence of Perez and Alcantara going forward.

Lindgren is another such option. He’s spent the season riding the waiver wire with Miami, as this is the fourth time the Marlins have selected his contract this season. The right-hander’s stints with the big league club have been brief, but he’s posted a 5.14 ERA that’s only slightly below league average by measure of ERA+ (91) with a 4.69 FIP in his seven innings of work with the club. With a 4.88 ERA in a swing role at the Triple-A level this season, Lindgren could be a valuable source of innings for a rapidly thinning Marlins pitching staff over the season’s final stretch.

Marlins righty Jeff Lindgren went unclaimed on waivers and has been assigned outright to Triple-A Jacksonville, per the team’s transaction log at MLB.com. He’d been designated for assignment over the weekend.

Lindgren, 26, made his big league debut for Miami this season and has appeared in a total of three games, allowing a total of four runs on four hits and four walks with one strikeout. He’s started a dozen games for the Marlins’ Jacksonville affiliate in 2023, logging 61 1/3 innings and posting a 4.55 ERA with a sub-par 17.5% strikeout rate against an elevated 11.4% walk rate.

A 24th-round pick by Miami back in 2019, Lindgren posted steady numbers up throughout much of his minor league tenure, including a 3.56 ERA in 174 2/3 innings at the Double-A level. He’s been hit harder in 27 Triple-A starts since last year, however, logging a 4.94 ERA with shaky strikeout-to-walk numbers and a few too many home runs allowed (1.32 HR/9). He’s averaged just 90.4 mph on his heater in limited big league action.

Lindgren has already been outrighted two times earlier this season, so he’ll have the right to decline the assignment in favor of electing minor league free agency. However, he also had that right following the second outright and opted to remain with the Marlins. Assuming he once again chooses to stay — he’s listed as active on the Jumbo Shrimp roster right now — he’ll continue to serve as depth in the upper minors, be it in the rotation or the bullpen.

Marlins Select Robert Garcia, Designate Jeff Lindgren

The Marlins selected the contract of left-hander Robert Garcia, reports Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, with righty Jeff Lindgren designated for assignment in a corresponding move. They also optioned Eury Pérez and recalled Sean Reynolds, both of which were reported earlier today.

Garcia, 27, cracks a big league roster for the first time. Originally a Royals prospect, he came over to the Marlins in the minor league portion of the 2021 Rule 5 draft. He split last year between Double-A and Triple-A, posting a 3.75 ERA in 62 1/3 innings. He struck out 24.5% of batters faced while walking 11.5%. He’s spent all of this year in Triple-A, with his walk rate jumping to 13.3% but his strikeout rate ticking up to 34.2%. He has a 2.95 ERA through 36 2/3 innings this year.

Lindgren, 26, has thrice been added to the Marlins’ roster this year only to be quickly designated for assignment shortly thereafter. He’s tossed seven big league innings over three appearances with a 5.14 ERA. He’s spent more time in Triple-A, with a 4.55 ERA in 61 1/3 innings over 12 starts.

The Marlins will now have a week to trade him or pass him through waivers. Both of his previous DFAs resulted in him clearing waivers and being outrighted to the minors. Players with previous career outrights have the right to reject further assignments in favor of electing free agency. Lindgren could have therefore rejected his second outright but elected to stay in the organization. It’s possible that the same series of events plays out again in the coming days, though that remains to be seen.

Marlins Select Jeff Lindgren

The Marlins have selected the contract of right-hander Jeff Lindgren and optioned fellow righty George Soriano to Triple-A, as noted by Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. Lindgren takes the 40-man roster spot opened up by the club’s decision to designate veteran reliever Archie Bradley for assignment yesterday.  Miami’s 40-man is now at capacity.

Lindgren, 26, made his MLB debut with the Marlins earlier this season. The righty allowed four runs on four hits and three walks over five innings without recording a strikeout in a five-inning relief appearance back in April. Since then, he was designated for assignment, selected back onto the roster, and then designated for assignment again without making an additional appearance. While Lindgren had the option to test free agency after being outrighted for a second time, he opted to stick in the Marlins organization. In 61 1/3 innings at the Triple-A level this season, Lindgren has posted a 4.55 ERA. McPherson indicates that Lindgren will be a long man out of the bullpen for the Marlins going forward.

As for Soriano, the 24-year-old hurler sports an impressive 1.98 ERA over 13 2/3 innings since making his MLB debut with the Marlins back in April. After providing 3 2/3 scoreless innings of work against the Braves yesterday, Soriano heads back to Triple-A, though the righty hasn’t been able to replicate his success at the big league level in the minors this season. In 25 1/3 innings with the club’s affiliate in Jacksonville, Soriano has posted a 5.33 ERA. He’ll look to improve those results while waiting for his next big league opportunity.

Marlins Outright Jeff Lindgren

The Marlins have sent right-hander Jeff Lindgren outright to Triple-A Jacksonville after he went unclaimed on waivers, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald. It’s the second time this month in which the Fish ran Lindgren through waivers.

Lindgren, a 24th round pick in 2019, has one big league outing under his belt. That was a five-inning relief appearance at the start of this year. He allowed four runs with three walks and no strikeouts after being pressed into earlier than expected work following a injury to Johnny Cueto. That preceded his first DFA. He wound up starting two games for Jacksonville, throwing 10 2/3 frames of seven-run ball before being called back up over the weekend.

The Illinois State product’s second promotion didn’t result in any action. Miami designated him for assignment again on Monday as part of a revolving door at the back of the pitching staff. He could now head back to Triple-A, though he’d have the right to test free agency as a player who has twice cleared outright waivers in his career.

Marlins Select Sean Nolin

The Marlins have announced to reporters, including Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald, that they have selected the contract of left-hander Sean Nolin. Right-hander George Soriano was optioned to make room on the active roster while righty Jeff Lindgren was designated for assignment to open a spot on the 40-man.

Nolin, 33, is a journeyman to the extreme. A Blue Jays draft pick back in 2010, he then bounced around to the systems of the Athletics, Rockies, White Sox and Mariners, before expanding his range to independent ball and overseas. He spent the 2020 season with the Seibu Lions in Japan, returned to North America in 2021 for a stint with the Nationals and then went to the Kia Tigers in Korea last year. He posted a 2.47 ERA in 124 innings with the Tigers last year.

Nolin returned to North America this offseason, signing a minor league deal with the Twins in February. It was reported over the weekend that the Marlins had acquired him from the Twins and he’ll now join the big league club. He made one appearance in Triple-A, logging four innings on Wednesday. He’ll give a fresh arm to a pitching staff that has been taxed in a few ways of late. Injuries to Johnny Cueto and Trevor Rogers have dealt a few blows to the rotation. The club also had to play a doubleheader on Saturday, using nine different pitchers to get through that twin bill against the Guardians. Nolin has a career 5.74 ERA in 18 games, eight of those in the 2013-2015 period before getting 10 more with the Nats in 2021.

As for Lindgren, 26, this is the second time this year he has been selected to the roster and quickly designated for assignment, even though the season is just a few weeks old. Since he cleared waivers and was outrighted the first time, he’ll now have the right to reject a second outright and elect free agency if he clears waivers again. He got a five-inning emergency outing in his first stint but didn’t get into a game this time around. He posted a 4.21 ERA in the minors last year.
