Angels Seek Starter, Relievers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 8, 2009 at 10:08am CDT

The Angels would love to add a front-of-the-rotation starter like Roy Halladay and they're looking hard for relief help, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times. Acquiring relievers may be easier than obtaining a top starter, because, as Torii Hunter says, "If they're shopping Roy Halladay, everybody and their momma is going to be after him."

Halladay's teammates, Scott Downs and Brandon League, have become Angels targets, along with Chad Qualls and Rafael Bentancourt. Of the four, Betancourt would presumably be easiest to pry away, as the Jays have yet to become sellers and the D'Backs already traded one late-inning reliever.

Morosi On Yankees, Qualls, Tigers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 3, 2009 at 9:19am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports has a few more rumors worth passing along:

  • The Yankees' bullpen has been performing well, but that's not stopping the team from keeping a close eye on D'Backs closer Chad Qualls.
  • If Brian Bruney doesn't start pitching more consistently, the Yankees may feel more pressure to acquire Qualls, who won't be a free agent until after next season and makes an affordable $2.5MM this year.
  • The Tigers are still looking for an outfield bat as Magglio Ordonez's hitting woes continue. The haircut may not have been the answer, as he has just two hits in his last 20 at bats.

Rockies Rumors: ‘Pen, Atkins, Torrealba

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | July 1, 2009 at 4:06pm CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies' search for a reliever and details on a couple trade chips:

  • The Rockies had interest in Joel Hanrahan before he was dealt to the Pirates.
  • They would love to reacquire LaTroy Hawkins, but he's not available now.
  • The D'Backs would part with Chad Qualls.
  • The Padres are expected to move Cla Meredith.
  • Garrett Atkins could be moved and the Red Sox seem to be a logical fit, but a history of failed deals between the two sides could slow talks. The Red Sox have scouted Atkins, but their interest level isn't known.
  • Yorvit Torrealba's future remains uncertain and he says he'd like to remain in Colorado, though he realizes he might be dealt.

Rosenthal On Tejada, Rockies, Mets

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 30, 2009 at 9:46am CDT

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports argues that the Cubs don't need to make a trade, they just need their hitters to start producing. Here are his most recent rumors:

  • Ed Wade says Miguel Tejada's impending free agency is part of the reason the Astros aren't asking him to move from shortstop to third base. Tejada would probably move, but Wade would rather not ask him to.
  • The Rockies are looking hard for relief help. They were interested in Joel Hanrahan earlier in the season, but he's much less appealing now.
  • LaTroy Hawkins, Chad Qualls and Takashi Saito are all more appealing than Hanrahan, but Rosenthal says they're "longshots."
  • The Rockies aren't that interested in Cla Meredith and Danys Baez.
  • One GM said the Royals are under pressure to win as many games as possible this year.
  • The D'Backs believe Doug Davis has more value as a trade chip because he projects as a Type B free agent. Check out the latest Elias rankings here.
  • One official believes the Mets are better off with Daniel Murphy than Nick Johnson.
  • When the Cardinals inquired on Matt Holliday they heard the A's aren't looking to move him and would require a strong offer to part with him.

Heyman On Pedro, Nats, Mets, Rangers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 19, 2009 at 12:33pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com says those closest to the Pedro Martinez situation expect him to sign soon. Heyman has many more rumors; here they are:

  • One GM thinks the Nationals are demanding too much in return for their players. He says they want "a dollar and a quarter for a dollar."
  • As Heyman points out, interim GM Mike Rizzo has an especially tough role, since his job isn't secure.
  • Heyman says the Nats will make an announcement on a full-time GM this season. Rizzo has a good shot at the position.
  • Rival GMs say Omar Minaya is now looking to boost the Mets' offense.
  • Adding a player who can handle first base and the outfield would allow the Mets to make room for Carlos Delgado when he returns later in the season. Mark DeRosa fits the bill, but the Indians are apparently asking for a lot in a potential deal.
  • The Rangers aren't likely to trade for Brad Penny, though they have considered him.
  • Huston Street's one of the relievers who appeals to the Rangers.
  • Texas can't add payroll, but can trade prospects.
  • Chad Qualls and Heath Bell would both command big returns in a trade.
  • Most contenders believe they need to add relievers, but the Red Sox are willing to trade one away.
  • Heyman says releasing Dontrelle Willis would be a drastic move.
  • The Reds, Braves and possibly the Cardinals are looking for right-handed hitting corner outfielders.

Morosi: D’Backs “Destined” To Be Sellers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 12, 2009 at 9:18am CDT

According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports the Diamondbacks are "destined to be deadline sellers," but his source says they've just had "preliminary trade discussions" so far. Now 26-35, the D'Backs are 14 games behind the Dodgers, and in last place in the NL West. Max Scherzer, Dan Haren and Justin Upton are likely untouchable, but "the vast majority" of the team's players could be available in the right deal:

  • The D'Backs may consider dealing Chad Qualls and even Stephen Drew, though they could only be obtained for a steep price.
  • Doug Davis could become available. He makes $8.75MM this year before becoming a free agent.
  • Felipe Lopez, who's making a reasonable $3.5MM this year, would likely appeal to some contenders.
  • Jon Garland, who makes $6.25MM this year and at least $2.5MM in 2010, could also be moved.

Rosenthal On Yankees, Angels, Glavine

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 12, 2009 at 8:58am CDT

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Yankees will eventually "target the best available late-inning relievers." Here are some names to watch and the rest of Rosenthal's rumors:

  • The Yankees have already expressed interest in Huston Street.
  • The Rockies, on an eight-game win streak, are just 4.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race and don't want to deal Street until closer to July 31st.
  • Chad Qualls and Jose Valverde could be options for the Yankees, but both have dealt with health issues and the Yankees would have to be certain they're healthy.
  • The Yankees could pursue Danys Baez.
  • Angels GM Tony Reagins says other teams are calling him regularly, but there's "nothing on the horizon."
  • The Angels could use help just about everywhere and they could deal from depth in the middle infield and behind the plate.
  • Brandon Wood has been playing some first base in Triple A.
  • Andy Sonnanstine and Jeff Niemann could be traded if the Rays don't start winning.
  • The White Sox may not receive good prospects in return if they deal Jermaine Dye, since "few clubs, if any" can afford to take on his $11.5MM salary and surrender top young players in the same deal.
  • Rosenthal hears that any grievance Tom Glavine files against the Braves would be out of principle; he would donate any money awarded to charity.
  • Gregor Blanco could play right field for the Braves if they deal Jeff Francoeur.
  • Rosenthal heard from one scout who was "decidedly unimpressed" with Doug Davis.

Heyman On Strasburg, D’Backs, Penny

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 8, 2009 at 12:33pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com anticipates some memorable negotiations between the Nationals, Scott Boras and Stephen Strasburg. Here's what Heyman heard about Strasburg along with the rest of his rumors:

  • Boras is still expected to demand $50MM for Strasburg.
  • Think that's a lot? Some think Strasburg would command $100MM as a free agent.
  • Executives generally guess he'll end up signing for more than $20MM, but not by much.
  • One NL exec said he expects the deal to reach $30MM.
  • Strasburg could always pitch in Japan or for an independent team if he doesn't sign, but Heyman imagines he'd much rather join a major league franchise immediately.
  • The Pirates could draft catcher Tony Sanchez with the fourth pick.
  • The D'Backs could deal Chad Qualls and Tony Pena at the deadline.
  • Boston seems "in a hurry" to deal Brad Penny.
  • One Red Sox person was not impressed by what he saw from Jeff Francoeur.
  • It's probably too early for the Rangers to release Vicente Padilla.

Odds & Ends: Qualls, Scheppers, Strasburg

By Tim Dierkes | May 6, 2009 at 12:28pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • D'Backs closer Chad Qualls has MLBTR bookmarked…nice!
  • In yesterday's post on Miguel Angel Sano, I linked to a three-minute video.  It turns out that clip was a snippet of a documentary called Live to Play, Play to Live.  A production company is following five players, including Sano, leading up to the July 2nd signing period.
  • Baseball America's J.J. Cooper writes about the independent league season debuts of Tanner Scheppers and Aaron Crow.  Scheppers is with the St. Paul Saints, who also employ Craig Brazell and Kerry Ligtenberg.
  • Keith Law discusses Stephen Strasburg in this ESPN video.  Law predicts Strasburg will sign for $18-20MM.  Strasburg's coach Tony Gwynn advises caution for the Nationals if they draft him, in talking to Edward Lewis of the Daily Aztec.
  • Former Yankees Dominican scouting director Ramon Valdivia filed a $3MM wrongful termination suit against the team, according to ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr.
  • SI's Jon Heyman looks back at the incredible 2005 draft class.
